(1) Pahtan-reciting ceremony held at Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 28 Dec - The Pahtan-reciting ceremony of pupils of basic education high schools, part of the  School  Family Day Celebration of the Ministry of Education for the 2000-2001 academic year, took place
at  North-west corner on the platform of the Shwedagon Pagoda this evening, attended by Chairman of  Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin
Nyunt.

Also present were ministers, deputy ministers, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Brig-Gen Hsan  Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general and chairmen of
departments and boards under the Ministry of Education, members of the pagoda board of trustees,  township education officers of Yangon Division, school heads and teachers. The pupils took designated
places at North-west corner on the platform of the pagoda at 4.30 p.m. The Secretary-1 and party also offered  flowers, lights and joss sticks.

According to the programme, the pupils offered 9,000 lights and 9,000 flowers to the pagoda and took the  Five Precepts. Then, they recited religious verses. The ceremony came to a close at 6.30 p.m. The aims of
the ceremony are to turn out good sons and daughters who are imbued with patriotism, Union Spirit and  strong moral character and are capable of preserving traditions, culture and national character and to  speed  up efforts for implementation of education promotion programmes by exhibiting achievements in the higher  and basic education sectors. Over 1,800 pupils of basic education high schools in 22 townships
took part in  the ceremony.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt receives Senior Adviser of LDP, Japan

YANGON, 28 Dec- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received  Senior Adviser Mr Tomomi Tsu Iwakura of Liberal Democratic Party, Japan and party at the Guest House of  Ministry of Defence at 8.30 am today. Also present at the call were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung,  Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and  Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumiri.

Glittering ceremony honours Lwin Moe, Tun Eindra Bo as best actor and actress for 1999

YANGON, 28 Dec- The prestigious Best Actor Award of Myanmar Motion Pictures for 1999 went to Lwin Moe for  his role in the film "Yin-hte-ka Hsaung-ya-thi" and the Best Actress Award to Tun Eindra
Bo for her role in the  film "Hnaung-ta-mye-mye".

The ceremony to present Myanmar Motion Pictures Awards for 1999 was held at the National Indoor  Stadium-1, Thuwunna, this evening with Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen
Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe in attendance. Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung made a  speech on the occasion and presented the awards to the outstanding film actors, actresses, and
technicians.

Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of  Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife,  ministers and their wives, deputy ministers, chairman of the Assessment Board for Promotion of Myanmar  Motion Pictures and members, members of Myanmar Motion Pictures Censor Board and Video Censor  Board, heads of department, executives of Myanmar Motion Pictures Asiayon, Myanmar Writers and  Journalists Association, Myanmar Thabin Asiayon, Myanmar Music Asiayon and Myanmar
Traditional Artists  and Artisans Asiayon, actors and actresses, film technicians and producers, guests and movie fans. Before  the ceremony, artistes entertained those present with songs, accompanied by Myanma

Some good scenes that helped them win the awards were shown. Minister Maj-Gen  Kyi Aung presented the Academy Awards and K 100,000 each, presented by eve Group of Hind Hind Khaing  Co Ltd, to the award winners.

The award winners then spoke words of thanks. After the ceremony, the  Secretary-1 and wife cordially greeted the award winners.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung delivered an address at the Myanmar Motion Picture Academy  Awards

YANGON, 28 Dec - Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung delivered an address at the Myanmar  Motion  Picture Academy Awards presentation ceremony for the year 1999 this evening.

The following is a translation of the address delivered by the minister at the ceremony:

May the Secretary-1  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers, heads of department, chairmen and executives of Myanmar Writers and  Journalists Association, Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon, Myanmar Thabin Asiayon and Myanmar Music  Asiayon, artistes, guests and the entire people of Myanmar be blessed with happiness and suspiciousness.

Due to the efforts of nation-builders including film artistes throughout history, the race, religion and  national  cultural heritage can be firmly preserved and vitalized. The academy awards presentation
ceremony was  held in remembrance and in honour of the dutiful artistes of the successive periods. The ceremony was also  held with the aim of bringing out new generation artistes who will produce nation-building movies of great  artistic value. The history of Myanmar movies started 80 years ago, before the World War II. As the Myanmar  movies began at a time when the entire people are rekindling with anti-colonialist spirit in launching the  national movement to free the nation from subjugation, they reflected the people's life based on the national  cause.

As the time coincided with the funeral of U Tun Shein, a representative of the Myanmar delegation which went  to England to demand independence, London Art U Ohn Maung taped the funeral and
presented the  documentary to the public. U Ohn Maung who has been honoured as the father of Myanmar Movies  introduced innovative methods and relied only on the available equipment in filming many
Myanmar movies  including "Metta en Thuya". Thus, it is required for new generation film artistes to cherish, preserve and relay  the fine heritage of Myanmar motion pictures filled with efforts to uplift the national cause and self-reliant  endeavours based on patriotism and nationalistic fervour.

If the history of Myanmar motion pictures, that has entered an age of nearly a century, is studied, it can be  observed that films vitalizing the national cause, patriotism and nationalistic fervour, clearly depicting
the  traditions and culture and Myanmar character, and tragedies, comedies, romance, adventure and religious  movies have been presented with artistic values. Many of the movies made during pre-WW II
period reflected  the nationalism, vitalising the nationalistic fervour and educating the people of the colonial era to preserve the  traditions and culture and national traits. For example, "Thakin-myo",
"Sasana-DA-yaka", "Buddha Yaza",  "Doh Bayin", "Ye Myanmar", "Myanma Thwe", "Sein Hlan Bo" and "Shwedoung-taung" were popular movies of  that time. After the World War II, films such as "Bama
Thit", "Sit Pyan", "Bama Thwe" and "Bogyoke" promoting  the spirit to regain independence appeared.

These films had revitalized patriotism and Myanmar strength. During a period of ten years after regaining  independence, films based on national political thoughts on national re-consolidation, national solidarity,  termination of internal strife and opposition of destructive elements emerged. They were "Ta-thwe-ta-mye",  "Lute-pyi-kyute-pyi", "Gaba-ma-kyay", "Bo San Phe", Shwe-wa-Mye", "Chain-tan-byi"
and  "Hnin-dway-wai-hma-phyint". These films had the great impact on people to have new outlook and thoughts  and the will to dutifully serve the nation. "Yadanbon" and "Tat-hte-ga Myat Ko Ko" should be
put on record as  films with brilliant artistic value in steering the People's spirit and moral conduct towards the correct trend.  Now, films directed with noble aims for flourishing of good thoughts and character will be presented here.  "Metta en Thuya" was shown with the aim of giving youth a lesson that drinking liquors could ruin their  senses and character. Based on the novel "Love! and Liquor" written by Sayagyi P Moe Hnin, the film is the  first movie to educate the public (See page 6) the dangers of
narcotics. The film was awarded the gold  medal by Thusaritayuwa Association of Yangon, formed to give education to youth to abstain from drinking.

The film "Thonhse-chauk Kaung" was shown with a view of ending the gambling clubs in Yangon which  were always crowded with foreigners fifty years ago. The film also won the gold medal award. The first
cartoon film "Kyet-taung-kwa" was screened with the works of eminent cartoonists U Ba Gyan and U Hein  Soon with the theme to encourage the youth's enthusiasm in taking adventures. This cartoon film drew large  crowds. It must be regarded as one of the successful achievements in Myanma motion picture industry. In  those years, actors such as Chit Shwe, Tin Ngwe, Tin Pe, Kyaw Swe, Shwe Ba, Tin Nyunt and Diving Tin Hla,  who were good at acting in fighting and wrestling became the well-liked stunt stars and were so popular  among the movie-goers. A character named U Shwe Yoe was created in "Tawmyaingsonka lwanaungphan"  that was filmed to satirize the foreigner colonialist bureaucrats. "Shwe Yoe" was the university graduate  cartoonist U Ba Galay, who was a past master of anti-colonialist! cartoons.

Though it was performed and presented years ago, the duet dance called "U Shwe Yoe and Daw Moe" is still  popular in various parts of the country. The lively duet dance is performed for the purpose of reminding  people of nationalism that gave birth to anti-colonialist spirit. Among the films produced in the  post-independence era, "Nga Ba" was screened by the British Burma Films with the theme to portray the life  of simple farmers of that age who had to work hard and humbly leading so poor and low life. This film was  brought out of the country and presented in Russia and China. "Bawa Thanthaya" by writer and director U  Thukha in 1956 boasted the peaks of the film in story and artistic creation, and made all the audiences  realize the phenomenon of vicissitudes in life. It was so talented and artistic that it bagged lots of Academy  awards. The film reflects the vicissitudes in life and aesthetically presents the unavoidable circumstances  such as crying and laughing, sadness and happiness, and unpredictable nature of life.

In Myanma motion picture diamond jubilee era, "Waileihmway kywayleihmway" depicts just an ordinary  soldier's life-risking endeavours, nation-loving spirit, duty-consciousness, spirit of camaraderie and is also  complete with artistic talent. "Amimyayhma thargaungmyar" and "Myintmyat hnalontha" that highlight the  Tatmadawmen's conviction never reluctant to sacrifice their lives in the battles against the enemies
also win  audience appreciation. In fact, films reflect the lives of people and customs in respective age. They can also  be called as the landmarks in national history highlighting national requisites and objectives. I would like to  underscore the need for all to make films in keeping with the current, history and national requisites. As I  have stated above, new generation film-makers have to produce good Myanmar films with the aims of  promotion of Myanmar motion picture standard, producing artistic films, leaving good morals for the fans and  instilling correct ideology imitating the professional films in the past and emulating the professional senior  actors and actresses and directors.

In today's international arena, powerful nations are found to be employing various tactics to dominate their  power on earth. At the beginning of the 21st century and new millennium they have initiated the idea of  globalization designed to overpower many developing and beginning-to-develop nations. All must be vigilant  against their probable ulterior motive that they intend eclipse and diminish the economic
prosperity, social  progress, cultural heritage, national traits and cultural and literary standards of the developing and  beginning-to-develop nations. This is challenging national culture in the 21st century. Thus, the current  leadership is reminding the people of the importance of national awareness in response to the challenges.  The Traditional Cultural Performing Art Competitions are held every year for vitalization of national culture and  promotion of national cultural traits through genuine Myanmar cultural style.

I would like to emphatically urge all the artistes in the fields of literature, music, drama and motion picture to  strive as their inborn duty to prevent the national cultural traits from being eclipsed or infiltrated by alien  culture while safeguarding and promoting their own culture. As the artistes of the
successive eras have  shouldered this national duty successfully, new generations can witness today's Myanmar cultural standard  still having a strong tap-root and a firm bole resplendent with branches, leaves, buds, sprouts and fruits. Art  is able to attract the sight, hearing and emotion of the audiences, and must be in uniformity with the  circumstances in life. It is a sort of aesthetics emerging from human nature, people's opinion, and what they  see, hear, know and feel. As flowers and trees nourish themselves with the store of food from the earth,  water and natural fertilizers to produce fragrant flowers and nourishing fruits, human beings exploit the world  of humanity,! human nature, societies and emotions to
create artistic, talented works of art.

Art therefore must exist homogeneous with human nature, behaviour and culture, and must always be akin  to human history and national morale. So, in creating and producing artistic works for the people, artistes  need to pay first priority to the interests of the people, and their works need to be in conformity with the life  and character of the people. Moreover, they need to strive to enhance their artistic quality and to value their  profession. At a time when there is alien cultural infiltration, it is the duty of individual artistes and officials at  different levels to keep alive their own culture, arts and characteristics and to improve the standard of  Myanmar arts with their ability. It is found that with the advances in technology,
cinematography is also  improving. Before the golden jubilee of motion pictures, films were in the best position.

After the golden jubilee, as much as television and video plays have been become popular, the domain of  motion picture has been become narrower and narrower. After the end of the twentieth century, the forms
of  entertainment such as videos, Karaoke and television have reached up to rural areas, and gained popularity  among the public. Video films and Karaoke tapes have become popular among the people because of the  fact that they do not cost much investment and they do not need spacious areas and many peoples. As there  are differences in nature between films and videos and Karaoke, the public are still willing to watch Myanmar  films. It can be attributed to such advantages of Myanma cinematography as organization, presentation and  artistic quality. Another reason why the people like and accept Myanmar films, is that they love artistic  creators such as artistes and comedians.

Not only do the people enjoy the forms of entertainment such as videos and Karaoke, but they also  appreciate Myanmar films. Therefore, directors, artistes and film producers need to create Myanmar films
of  high standard and to try their utmost to improve the standard of Myanmar films. There have been  improvements in the artistic fields including the film field, and in different eras, there have also emerged
some things which should be noted because of economic grounds. Today, there are economic disputes  over copy right everywhere. This issue concerning copy right has cropped up because of unequal benefits
between artistes and businessmen. Everybody needs to take notice of the fact that extreme egotism, the desire to seek self-interests in an dishonest way and the desire to ride on the crest of popularity devalue and  taint the magnanimity, goodwill and sympathy of refined Myanmar people.

Therefore, as for the interests concerning copy right, all need to seek ways and means with a sense of  sympathy and magnanimity and in unity without letting the pristine nature of arts be tainted. The list of artistes  who won Myanma Motion Picture Academy Awards for 1999 will soon be announced. Before, the list is  announced, I am going to give a brief account of Myanmar Motion Picture Academy Awards. Myanmar Motion  Picture Academy Award Selection and Scrutiny Board already presented 228 academy awards. Among them,  there are 30 best film awards, 29 best director awards, 29 best actor awards, 40 best actress awards, 25  best supporting actor awards, 28 best supporting actress awards, 33 best cameramen awards, five best film  music awards, two best film sound awards, three best film script awards, one film editing award and three  special awards.

In 1998, there were 15 Myanmar films. The films which were already shown in 1999 were  Hnaung-ta-mye-mye, Aphe-nay-ya, Ma-chit-phu-de-achit-yu, Yee-laik-ya-aung, Oasis-lo-achit-myo,  Yin-hte-ga-hsaung-ya-thi, Myu-hnin-doe-hta-wa-ra-wai, Chit-laik-tok-one-two-three,  Than-yaw-zin-yin-sun-dan, Atwe, Be-ga-la-de-achit-le, Achit-ein-ga-lay, Aaung-dan-hnit-tu-tho-yauk-kya-mya,  Hnaung-hton-phwe-
myit-ta, Hna-lon-tha-hlyo-whet-khan, Chit-hnin-wai-wai, Aphyu-yaung-atta,  Hna-yauk-ta-ein-mat and Chit-an-na-wa. Academy awards for 1999 are given after objectively and fairly  scrutinizing these films.

In conclusion, I would like to urge families of Myanmar films to cooperate in striving  to improve the standard of Myanmar films, to produce Myanmar films of high artistic quality, to strive for the  perpetuation and flourishing of Myanma cultural heritage and national character and to cooperate with the  government, the Tatmadaw and the people in building the nation into a peaceful, modern and developed  one and developing human resources.

(2) Wellwishers present donations to public welfare tasks of Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise

YANGON, 28 Dec - Wellwishers presented cash donations towards public welfare tasks undertaken by Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise this afternoon at the City Hall, attended by Secretary-2 of the State
Peace  and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Minister receives Thai Ambassador

YANGON, 28 Dec- Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin received Ambassador of Thailand to  Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak .who had completed his tour of duty at his office at 2 p.m.
today.

Minister for Home Affairs meets Chinese Ambassador

YANGON, 28 Dec- Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met Ambassador of China to Myanmar Mr Liang  Dong at his office at the corner of Saya San Road and Industry-1 Road at 1 p.m. today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win of  Myanmar Police Force and Head of Office U Thet Tun.

(4) Minister for Transport inspects projects to improve waterways

YANGON, 28 Dec-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected waterway improvement services in  Htantabin Township, Yangon Division, yesterday.

Together with Deputy Minister U Pe Than, and officials of the Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems and the Irrigation Department. the Minister inspected digging of Katwe-kwe  (Htamalo) Canal.

He inspected dredging work to have required depth of the canal and work done by the Directorate of Water  Resources and Improvement of River Systems and the Irrigation Department.

Afterwards, the Minister and party inspected feasible conditions to improve Pakun Creek to become a waterway joining Ayeyawady River with Yangon River. At Pakun Village, the Minister and party held
discussions on the plans to be carried out for expansion of the existing waterway and maintenance of embankments. The Minister gave instructions on prompt implementation of the project.

Inter-School band competition opens

YANGON, 28 Dec- The first inter-school band playing competition was opened at the People's Square on Pyay Road this morning.

The opening ceremony was attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers Brig- Gen Soe  Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, directors-general, chairmen and officials of the departments and
boards of the  ministry and the competing school bands. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung delivered the opening  address.

In the "B" level competition today, Mawlamyine Basic Education High School No 8 band and Pathein all schools combined band of No 1 Basic Education Department, Monywa all school combined band and
Mandalay BEHS 4 band of No 2 Basic Education Department,, Hlinethaya BEHS 2 band of No 3 Basic Education Department, and Yankin Education College Practising Middle School of the Education
Planning  and Training Department took part. The "A" level competition continues on 30 December.

(5) Commander inspects special vegetable production and poultry farming zone of Yangon Division

YANGON, 28 Dec - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace  and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than
inspected the  special vegetable production and poultry farming zone of Yangon Division at Nyaunghnabin Village in  Hmawby Township, Yangon North District, this afternoon.

On arrival at Hmaw-byhsan Hall in the special zone in the afternoon, the commander was welcomed by members of the special zone supervisory committee. In meeting with the members of the special zone supervisory committee and national entrepreneurs, the commander said that vegetable production and poultry farming zones are being established according to the guidance of the leaders of the State; in the special zone-1, roads and drains have been built; in the special zone-2, roads and drains are being
constructed; agricultural water has been channelled into the special zone-1 through Ngamoeyeik right irrigation canal; national entrepreneurs need to take measures for the digging of artisan wells and installation of electric motors on the allotted plots of land; the special zone-1 takes up 3,089 acres of land, but cultivable land is 2,555 acres of land; national entrepreneurs who have got plots of land need to establish plantations by the end of January; Myanma Agriculture Service i! s also disseminating
knowledge  on agriculture and pest control; breeders, on their part, also need to carry out livestock breeding work with  might and main.

Division Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U San Maung reported on arrangements for the growing of  vegetables and the raising of livestock in the special zone-1, Deputy Director of Yangon Division Irrigation  Department U Myo Lwin on construction of roads and drains in the special zones and the channelling of  water into the special zone-1 through Ngamoeyeik right irrigation canal, Division Commissioner of Yangon  Division General Administration Department U Thein Swe on the laying of
laterite on streets in the special  zone-1 and availability of laterite, Yangon Division Engineer of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Zaw Win  on installation of power lines in the special zone-1, Director of Yangon Division Development Affairs  Committee U Soe Tint on reclamation of land in the special zone-3 and progress of work in building streets,  and the national entrepreneurs on their requirements. The commander inspected plantations established by  Malar Myaing Enterprise in the special zone-1.Managing Director U Htay Hlaing reported on the condition of  the plantations. The commander attended to requirements. Then, the commander inspected the agricultural  and livestock breeding work in the special zone-1. In the special zone-1, over 1,600 acres of land have been  placed under vegetables to date.

Yangon Division CCI holds Eighth Annual General Meeting

YANGON, 28 Dec- The Eighth Annual General Meeting of Yangon Division Chamber of Commerce and  Industry was held at the meeting hall of the division CCI this morning, attended by President of the
Union of  Myanmar Federation of  Chamber of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, Vice-President U Htain Win, Secretary-General U
Zaw Min  Win and executives, officials, the chairman of Yangon Division CCI, CEC members and members.

President of the division CCI U Than Oo delivered a speech and President U Win Myint extended greetings.  Then, the CEC report and the financial report were read out and approved. The ceremony
came to an end  with the concluding remarks by U Than Oo.

(6) Annual meeting of MFPTMA held

YANGON, 28 Dec- The Myanmar Forest Products and Timber Merchants Association held its seventh annual  general meeting at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road at 5 p.m. today.

It was attended by Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, officials of the ministry, President of  the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and
CEC members,  Chairman of MFPTMA U Aung Lwin and CEC members, executives and members and guests. Chairman U  Aung Lwin presided over the meeting. Then, Managing Director of Myanma Timber
Enterprise U Win Tun  read out the message sent by Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone. The report and financial statement of the  executive committee were read out by Secretary U Kyaw Lwin and approved.

MHMF successfully scales Mt Victoria

YANGON, 28 Dec- Vice-Chairman of Myanmar Hiking and Mountaineering Federation Maj Htaing Khan Mon  and 103 members led by Chairman of the Federation Rector of the Institute of Dental
Medicine Dr Paing Soe  started climbing 10,500-ft Mt Victoria in Kanpetlet Township, Mindat District, Chin State, on 19 December and  reached its peak on 21 December morning. The group came back here
on 22 December.

Traditional Medical Exhibition crowded with visitors

YANGON, 28 Dec- The Traditional Medical Exhibition sponsored by Department of Traditional Medicine of the  Ministry of Health continued at Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township today.  The Department of Traditional Medicine, Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar), the Ministry of  Forestry, Ministry of Industry-1 and Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation have opened
booths at the exhibition.  Similarly, U Ohn Sein Embrocation booth, Weikza Myetlon Medical House booth, Htet Linn Medical House  booth, Aungtaman Medical House booth, Aye Nyein Thida Traditional
Medicine booth, Lubyandaw Padamya  Medicine House booth and Pyithu Thetsaunt Traditional Medicine booth of Hinthada have also been opened  there. The exhibition was packed with visitors who observed the
production of traditional medicines with the  use of modern technique and bought the medicines. The Exhibition continues up to 30 December, and  admission is free.

(7) Consumer Market Index and Inflation Rate Statistics Course opened

YANGON, 28 Dec- An opening ceremony of the Consumer Market Index and Inflation Rate Statistics Course  sponsored by the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development was held at the
training hall of  the Central Statistical Organization on Strand Road Yesterday.

It was attended by the directors-general of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development,  guests and trainees. CSO Director-General Dr Sein Tin made a speech.

Altogether 56 trainees, 46 from the Planning Department and 10 from CSO, attended it.

Sarpay Beikman Public Library opens on weekends

YANGON, 28 Dec- The public library on the first floor of Sarpay Beikman Building at 529-531, Merchant Street,  will also be open to public on weekends beginning 30 December. In the past the library
opened only during  office hours on weekdays.

It will open from noon to 4 p.m. at weekends, but will remain closed on gazetted holidays.

Shwebontha three storey ordination hall of Eindawya Dagon Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Dagon Township, blessed

YANGON, 28 Dec- A ceremony to bless Shwebontha three-storey ordination hall of Eindawya Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Dagon Township, in conjunction with reordination of Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of the
Sarthintaik member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Gunananda was held at the Sarthintaik at noon today.

Present on the occasion were Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Magway Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara and members of  the Sangha, wellwishers and guests. The Magway Sayadaw administered the Five Precepts. Then members  of the Sangha recited the parittas. Afterwards, wellwishers presented offertories to members of
the Sangha.  The Magway Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained.

A ceremony to bless the Shwebontha three-storey ordination hall was held at 7.30 am, and it was presided over by Sayadaw of Ayezedikyaung in San-gyoung Township Ovadacariya of Pitakathakissa Association
Bhaddanta Ariya. Next, Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Gunananda was reordained with the sponsorship of wellwishers of the ordination hall Dr Moe Tin-Dr Ei Ei Tin and family.  Later, offertories
were  presented to newly reordained Sayadaw and members of the Sangha.

Hopong Township USDA members tour Yangon

YANGON, 28 Dec- An excursion group comprising 112 USDA members of Menel Hill Region in Hopong  Township, Shan State (South), accompanied by officials of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue,
went  sight-seeing downtown Yangon this morning.

The USDA members first arrived at the Defence Services Historical Museum on Shwedagon Pagoda Road,  where they were conducted round by officials. Then, the USDA members visited the National
Museum on  Pyay Road and proceeded to USDA Headquarters on University Avenue, where they were welcomed by Head  of the Headquarters Daw Aye Myint and officials. Head of the Headquarters Daw Aye Myint reported on the  lay-out of the building of the Headquarters and conducted them round it. They later visited Myanmar Radio  and Television of the Ministry of Information on Pyay Road.

(8) 255 drug-related cases exposed in November

YANGON, 28 Dec- The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department exposed 255  drug-related cases in November 2000. Seizures made by them were 36.3714 kilos of opium in 24
cases,  7.1419 kilos of heroin in 80 cases, 0.013 kilo of opium oil in one case, 15.0992 kilos of low-grade opium in  12 cases, 40.8977 kilos of marijuana in 41 cases, 25.48 litre of phensedyl in four cases, 214,312
stimulant  tablets in 46 cases, 5.559 kilos of ephedrine in one case, one case of stimulant powder, 4856.092 litres of  chemical liquid in one case, 37 cases for failure to register and seven other cases. Action was taken against  369 persons' 288 men and 81 women-in connection with 255 drug-related cases in November.

(9) 24 NLD members of Nyaungbee Village-tract, Kyunsu Township resign of own accord

YANGON, 28 Dec- Twenty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Nyaungbee  Village-tract in Kyunsu Township, Taninthayi Division.

Twenty-four members of Nyaungbee Village-tract NLD, Kyunsu Township, Taninthayi Division, of their own  accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyunsu Township Multiparty Democracy
General  Election Sub-Commission and the party concerned on 7 September 2000 as they no longer wished to  participate in party politics of NLD.
