(1) Senior General Than Shwe urges Industry-2 Ministry officials to listen to consumers' suggestions, complaints to upgrade products

YANGON, 26 Dec - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence
Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected industrial projects being undertaken by the Ministry of Industry-2 in  Indagaw region and Ngamoeyeik Bridge Project in Dagon Myothit (East) Township today.

Accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of
Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Ministers, Deputy Prime Minister and officials, the Senior General arrived at the industrial project in Indagaw at 9 am and was welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye,
ministers, the Yangon Mayor, the Deputy Ministers for Industry-2, the Commander of No 77 Light Infantry Division and officials.

At the hall of Radiator Workshop, the Senior General and party heard a report on implementation of the Indagaw region industrial zone project on 375 acres near Indagaw village, Bago Township, Bago Division, the aims of the project, type of workshops included in the project, progress of work in building the workshops and arrival of machinery presented by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

Managing Director of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries U Soe Thein reported to the Senior General on the salient points about the workshops of MADEI being built in the region, Managing Director of  Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries U Than Tun on progress of work in setting up farm machinery
workshops and Managing Director of Myanma Industrial Construction Services U Ye Tun on progress of work in
implementing the project. In giving guidance, Senior General Than Shwe said as the Ministry of Industry-2 is the base organization of the nation's industries, it should play a leading role in developing the industrial sector. The ministry should lay down work plans based on its experiences gained throughout the years for progress of the
nation's entire industrial sector. Sector-wise plans should be made in laying down projects in establishing the industrial sector systematically and with firm objectives.

The projects should not be implemented at random based on just the prevailing situations, and the ministry needs proper plans and innovations and should work for uplift of the industrial sector with proper objectives. It is required to make efforts to manufacture durable, attractive and quality products from the ministry's factories and workshops. Suggestions and complaints of the consumers should always be considered in quality control of the products. After inspecting the map of the zone, the Senior General observed car parts, samples of the machines which are to be manufactured by the motor parts and farm machinery workshops displayed in the hall.

Senior General Than Shwe and party then inspected farm machinery including power-tillers, tyres, car parts, cars and 80-Hp tractors, progress in construction of the Radiator Workshop and arrival of machinery and assembling of a 10-ton container Hino truck. They also inspected progress in erection of a metal bearing plant and a disc wheel plant. At 11.15 am, they went to Ngamoeyeik Bridge Project in Dagon Myothit (East) Township.

At the briefing hall of the project, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Hla reported to the Senior General on points of the project, Acting Director Col Khin Maung Myint of Military Engineers and engineers on preliminary tasks for construction of Ngamoeyeik Bridge, drawing of the design, work implementation and progress of work with audio-visual aids.

The Senior General gave suggestions. Then, the Senior General and party inspected progress in building Ngamoeyeik Bridge and left there at 1 p.m. Ngamoeyeik Bridge is located 16 miles from Yangon on No 7 Highway linking No 2 Highway and No 3 Highway and No 1 Highway and No 4 Highway. The 660 feet long bridge will
have a 28-foot wide motor way and two walkways on either side each measuring four feet in width. It is designed to withstand up to 60-ton trucks.


(2) Minister meets Chinese guests

YANGON, 26 Dec- Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met General Manager of China Textile Machinery (Group) Industry Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China Mr Liu Ming Xiong and party at his office at 2 p.m. today. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thein Tun, Director-General U Tin Hlaing of Directorate of Industries, Director-General U San Kyi of Regional Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department, Managing Director U Oo Thein Maung of Myanma Textile Industries and officials.

Minister meets Thai Ambassador

YANGON, 26 Dec-Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin met Thai Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak who had completed his tour of duty in Myanmar at his office this morning. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana, Director-General Dr Myo Myint of Religious Affairs Department, Pro-Rector of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe and Head of Office U Maung Maung Myint.

Indian delegation calls on Deputy Minister

YANGON, 26 Dec- Four member delegation led by Additional Secretary Dr PD Shenoy of the Ministry of Home Affairs of India arrived here by air on 20 December afternoon. The Indian delegation was welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Director of People's Militia and Frontier Forces Brig-Gen Than Maung, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, officials, Minister Mr Ashok Tomar of the Indian Embassy and Military Attach' Col Shakit Gurung.

On 21 December morning, the Indian delegation, accompanied by Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran and Military Attach' Col Shakit Gurung, called on Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung.

Then, officials explained the endeavours of narcotic drugs eradication in Myanmar to the Indian delegation at MPF
Headquarters. In the evening, MPF Director-General Police Maj-Gen Soe Win hosted dinner in honour of the Indian de-legation at Arthawka Restaurant on the Pyay Road. This afternoon, the delegation visited the National Museum on Pyay Road. Officials conducted them round the museum.


(3) South East Asian Anti-Tobacco Flame conveyed from Thanlyin to Dagon Myothit (South)

YANGON, 26 Dec- A ceremony to convey the South East Asian Anti- Tobacco Flame to Dagaon Myothit (South)
Township was held at Thihadipa Sports Ground in Thanlyin Township at 6.45 am today. Present were Director
(Public Health) Dr Htay Lwin of Health Department, Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein and officials, social associations, teachers, students and local people totalling over 2,500. First, District Chairman Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein took the flame from the stage in the sports ground at 6.55 am.

The Chairman carried the flame flanked by district level departmental officials and handed it over to Leader of the
Flame Conveyance Committee athlete Ko Phone Myint Teza who brought honour to the State. The Athlete group conveyed the flame flanked by members of Union Solidarity and Development Association to the gymnasium in Dagon Myothit (South) Township by car through Kyaikkhauk Pagoda Road, Thanlyin Bridge, Nawarat Road, Ayeyawun Road, Pyidaungsu Road of Thanlyin and Thakayta townships. The conveyance group handed over the
flame to Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Pyi. Flanked by members of District Peace and Development Council, Chairman Lt-Col Aung Pyi carried the flame to the gymnasium and planted it on the stage at 7.40 am. Officials, social associations and students welcomed the flame
waving miniature flags.

A ceremony to mark the conveyance of the SEAA Flame was held at the gymnasium of Dagon Myothit (South) Township this morning. District Chairman Lt-Col Aung Pyi extended greetings and Head of Yangon Division Health Department Dr Tin Maung Win explained matters related to the flame. Then, officials and guests viewed
the SEAA Flame Exhibition. The talks, extempore talk competition, quiz and prize presentation ceremony will be held while the flame stops over at the gymnasium. The exhibition opens from 9 am to 5 am daily up to 31 December.

Donations for construction of religious buildings in Lumbini Park

YANGON, 26 Dec-The 54th cash donation for construction of religious buildings in Lumbini Park in Nepal was held at Wizaya Mingala Dhammathabin, Kaba Aye, this afternoon. Present were State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayadaws led by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Ratha Guru Bhaddanta Panindabhivamsa, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Pro-rector of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe, officials and well-wishers.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panin-dabhivamsa. Director-General U Sann Lwin and officials presented offertories to the Sayadaws. The officials also accepted donations by including US $ 100,000 presented by Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Daw Khin Kyi. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panindabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. Donations received to date were K 67,922,306, US $ 419,497,
15,841 FECs, 34,815, German mark 6,201, Australian $ 3,831, Swiss Francs 2,025, Sterling Pound 336, Canadian $ 1,500, Hong Kong $ 70, 1,500 Indian Rupees, 28,500 Nepalese Rupees, Philippine Peso 100, Singapore $ 860, Malaysian Ringgits 42, 781 Bahts, 20 Yuans and 12,000 Indonesian Rupiahs.


(4) Commander inspects livestock breeding, construction tasks in Mandalay

YANGON, 26 Dec-Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win and departmental officials, arrived at Agriculture and Livestock Breeding Farm No 1 of Mandalay City Development Committee on 24 December afternoon.

The commander inspected fish ponds, digging of fish ponds and poultry farms. The mayor and officials reported on livestock breeding and tasks to be done. The commander gave instructions. A total of 28,000 fingerlings are being bred at 10 ponds of Yaydaguntaung Agriculture and Livestock Breeding Farm No 1 of MCDC. The committee sells fingerlings. Similarly, the committee undertakes 14 poultry farms and sells 5,400 eggs at tax-free markets daily.

After that, the commander and party inspected construction of the approach road of Nadaungkya Creek Bridge on Mandalay-PyinOoLwin Road, extended construction of the ring road, Myitnge-Htonbo short-cut road and Letkhokpin Creek Bridge. Officials reported on progress of work. Then, the commander and party proceeded to extended construction of Mandalay-Singaing section of Yangon-Mandalay Road. They inspected construction of the road and fulfilled the requirements.

Gifts presented to National Literary Award winner Dagon Taya

YANGON, 26 Dec- Chairman of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun-Twantay), Joint-Secretary U Myint Kywe (Maung Myint Kywe), Central Executive Committee members U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) and U Khin Swe (Shwe Sun Nyo) presented K 50,000 and gifts to Sayagyi U Htay Myaing (Dagon Taya) at 88, Karamet 3rd Lane, South Okkalapa Township, currently here
from Kalaw (Aungban) Township, who could not attend the ceremony to pay respects to doyen writers to mark the 1362 ME Sarsodaw Day. Sayagyi U Htay Myaing (Dagon Taya) spoke words of thanks. Members of National Literary Award Committee U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin), U Myint Kywe (Maung Myint Kywe) and Head of Administration Branch (In-charge) Daw Cho Cho Than (Cho Mya Nwe) and U Zaw Win presented cash award K 100,000 for the National Literary Award to Sayagyi U Htay Myaing.


(5) Minister inspects Khabaung, Phyu Creek Multi-purpose Dam Projects

YANGON, 26 Dec- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by officials, arrived at Khabaung Multi-purpose Dam Project in Oktwin Township on 24 December morning. The minister inspected land preparation for the main dam. Director-General U Kyaw San Win of Irrigation Department and Director U Win Maung reported on arrangements for construction of the dam at the lower area of the junction of Khabaung and Parine Creeks, building of embankment, the conduit and the spillway.

The minister gave instructions on construction sites and discussed dam projects of Sittoung Valley Development Project on the map. On completion of Khabaung Multi-purpose Dam Project, not only water supply for cultivation tasks in Toungoo and Oktwin townships but also measures for flood prevention and production of hydel power will be developed.

At Oktwin Sugar Mill, the minister inspected production process of the mill and left instructions on work. After that, the minister and party arrived at Phyu Creek Multi-purpose Dam Project site on Phyu Creek. Officials of Irrigation Department reported on the conditions of the dam to the minister. The minister inspected land
preparation carried out with heavy machinery. On completion of Phyu Creek Multi-purpose Dam Project, extended cultivation and double cropping will be carried out and measures for flood revention and hydel power generation will be undertaken.

Minister inspects services of Road Transport, Myanma Railways

YANGON, 26 Dec-Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung accompanied by Managing Director Col Min Swe of Myanma Railways and officials arrived in Road Transport in Ayethaya Industrial Zone, Taunggyi where officials reported on services of the department to the Minister on 24 December morning.

Then the Minister inspected the tasks of the automobile workshop and the machinery and gave necessary instructions. In the afternoon, the Minister arrived at Nyaungshwe Station and inspection Coach and Locomotive maintenance Workshop and gave instructions on cleanliness of the station, smooth transport, maintenance of the
carriages and engines and abiding by the rules and regulations to the officials. The Minister inspected Kalaw-Thazi railroad section and gave instructions to the engineers.

Minister for Education inspects preparations for School Family Day Celebration

YANGON, 26 Dec - Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the 200-2001 academic year School Family Day Celebration Minister for Education U Than Aung inspected the preparations for the celebration at the Yangon University Diamond Jubilee Hall in Kamayut Township today.

He was accompanied by Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt and chair men of various subcommittees. After inspecting the preparations on the first floor, the second-floor, and the third-floor of the Diamond Jubilee Hall, he gave suggestions. The School Family Day Celebration is scheduled to be held at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in Kamayut Township from 29 December 2000 to 5 January 2001. Afterwards, the minister inspected the New
Century Resource Development Department and Ancient Myanmar Literature Department (Palm-leaf Manuscript, Literary Scroll and Stone Inscription) of the National Human Resource Development Department of the Ministry of Education to be opened in Botahtaung Townships.


(6) Minister inspects sites for bridges on Maei-Minbyin- Kyaukpyu Road

YANGON, 26 Dec-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials, arrived at the construction site of Kyaukkyipauk Bridge on 23 December morning.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Tin Tun reported on preparation for construction of the bridge and the target. The minister gave necessary instructions and inspected the worksite.

The minister then proceeded to the site chosen for construction of Londawpauk Bridge on Maei-Kyaukpyu Road. Assistance Engineer U Myint Oo reported on preparations for construction of approach and main bridge. The minister inspected the worksite. After that, the minister arrived at the site chosen for building Minkyaung Creek Bridge. Senior Engineer U Tin Soe and officials welcomed the minister and reported on tasks for construction of
the bridge.

Kyaukpyu District Senior Engineer U Kyi Soe reported on availability of fresh water to be used in construction of Kyaukpyu-Minbyin-Kyaukkyipa section and bridge's. The minister then inspected construction site of Minkyaung Creek Bridge.

Minister inspects departmental work in Myeik

YANGON, 26 Dec- Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe accompanied by Director General U Win Maung of Department of Civil Aviation, Managing Director U Thein Htay of Myanma Port Authority and officials arrived at Myeik Airport this morning.

At the briefing hall, Deputy Commander of Coastal Region Command Brig-Gen Tin Latt, General Staff Officers and Officer In-charge Lt- Col Hla Htay of Myeik Airport Extension Project reported to the minister on earth work, laying rocks on the runway, availability of materials and machinery. The minister gave instructions on timely completion and meeting set standard and maximum application of machinery and he inspected renovation work of
the airport. Afterwards, the minister inspected Seik Nge jetty and gave necessary instructions. The minister and party left Myeik for Yangon at 9 am.

Shrimp fry and model breeding station handed over to Fisheries Dept

YANGON, 26 Dec-A ceremony to hand over the shrimp fry and model breeding station built at Yaychanpyin 2 in Sittway with the assistance of the Thai government to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries was held at the Fisheries Department in Ahlon Township today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister 1U Aung Thein and officials Ambassador of! Thailand to Myanmar Mr Pansak Chalarak extended greetings. Director-General of Fisheries Department U Than Tun and Senior Fisheries Adviser Mr Niwes Ruang Panit of Thailand signed and exchanged the documents. Deputy Minister U Aung Thein spoke words of thanks.


(7) Myanmar Women's Art Exhibition opens

YANGON, 26 Dec-A ceremony to open Myanmar Women's Art Exhibition was held at Lawkanat Gallery on Pansodan Street this morning.

It was attended by Brig-Gen Khin Aung Myint and Brig-Gen Aung Kyi of Ministry of Defence, Chairman of Library, Museum and Exhibition Supervisory Committee Director-General I U Chit Naing of Information and Public Relations Department, Ministry of Information and committee members, members of panel of patrons of Myanmar Traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon, women artists and guests. First, Director-General U Chit Naing presented the permit to artist Daw Nwe Nwe Yi. Brig-Gen Khin Aung Myint formally opened the exhibition. Then, guests viewed the exhibition. At the exhibition, 160 paintings and carvings of 16 artists are on
display. It will be opened to public from 9 am to 5 p.m. till 31 December.

ASEAN Write Award Winner Writer Saw Mon Nyin, calendar models honoured

YANGON, 26 Dec-The Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs honoured Writer Saw Mon Nyin, ASEAN Write Award Winner, those who posed for calendar covers for the Year 2001 and those who gave talks on World AIDS Day.

The ceremony was held at Bogyoke Aung San Hall of Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road here, this morning, with an address by Chairman of MNCWA Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

Also present on the occasion were members of MNCWA, Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Professor Daw May May Yi, working committee member Daw Khin Win Shwe, Adviser to working committee education board Daw Khin Than Nwe and officials, Yangon Division NWCWA member Daw Marlar Tint Writer Saw Mon Nyin, film stars and guests.

Chairman of MNCWA Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa presented a gift and the certificate of honor to Writer Saw Mon Nyin who won ASEAN Write Award.

Then, MNCWA member Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented gifts and certificates to those who posed for calendar cover photos for the Year 2001 and Actress Academy Htet Htet Moe Oo and Actor Academy Ye Aung who gave talks on World AIDS Day and Adviser to working committee education board Daw Khin Than Nwe to Actress May Thinza Oo and Actor Yi Wai Yan. Advisor to working committee information board Daw Khin Khin Lay
presented anthology of articles by Man Khin Khin to film stars. ASEAN Literary Award Winner Writer Saw Mon Nyin expressed thanks and the ceremony came to a close.


(8) MOC Chairman inspects camps of athletes for SEA Games

YANGON, 26 Dec-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint inspected the camps of athletes for track and field, volleyball, taekwando and weightlifting events and messing hall in the compound of Aung San Stadium this morning. The athletes are under-going training to participate in the
XXI SEA Games to be held in Malaysia in September 2001. The minister attended the closing ceremony of boxing course for instructors conducted by International Olympic Solidarity Programme at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna and spoke on the occasion. The minister presented certificates to the trainees.

Advanced Division Under-25 Soccer Tournament continues

YANGON, 26 Dec-The First Myanmar Olympic Committee Chairman's Trophy Advanced Division Under-25 Soccer Tournament continued at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 3 p.m. today. Electric Power beat Royal FC 3-2 in the first match. Moe Kyaw Oo of Electric Power won man of the match. In the second match, Defence beat Tatmadaw (Army) 5-0. San Maung of Defence won man of the match. YCDC will play against Defence in the first semi-final match on 29 December evening.


(9) Two men get imprisonment for drug trafficking

YANGON, 26 Dec-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched Soe Naing (a) Tun Naing, 33, son of U Sein Tun, of Daukyat Village, Bilin Township, at Kayinlay Seik Village, Thaton Township on 19 August and arrested him together with 695 WY
brand stimulant tablets. Further information led to arrest of Kyi Aung, 44, son of U Maung Shwe, of Awingyi Village, Shwe-yaungpya Village-tract, Bilin Township, who was involved in the case. Action was taken against the two under Section 15/19 (A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Theinseik Police Station. Soe Naing (a) Tun Naing was sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and Kyi Aung to 15 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/21 by Thaton District Court on 1 December.

25 Myinmu NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 26 Dec-Twenty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myinmu Township,
Sagaing Division. Twenty-five members of Myinmu Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myinmu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics
of NLD.
