YANGON, 23 Dec - The annual general meeting of Myanmar Engineering Society was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, addressed by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present were the ministers, the deputy ministers, members of the panel of patrons of Myanmar Engineering Society, the chairman and executive committee members of the society, wellwishers, members of the society and guests.
The Secretary-1 said that engineers and architects play a crucial role in the efforts to enable Myanmar to keep abreast with other nations in terms of development. MES which has mobilized them as a national force, is making progress, and it can be regarded as a good sign for building the nation anew.
When the Tatmadaw government assumed the duties of State, Myanmar lagged behind in development for various reasons. In addition, there was a deteriorating situation due to anarchistic riots. The nation has been built into a modern and developed one with the strength of national forces including Myanmar engineers and architects. In order to further strengthen national solidarity, promote friendly relations among national races residing in the Union, ensure the thriving of business of national people and further uplift the dynamism of the Union Spirit, the government has built such infrastructures as the Union Highways, river-crossing bridges, ports of international standard and international airports, solely relying on Myanmar engineers and architects.
For the development of agriculture work, the basic economy of the nation, more than a hundred dams and reservoirs have been built without foreign technical assistance but only with Myanmar engineers, architects and skilled workers. The nation can be proud of it. In the same vein, it is found that they have systematically and skilfully constructed modern housing complexes, condominiums, five-star hotels, modern departmental stores, modern banks, golf courses of international standard, recreation parks and garden cities.
Furthermore, the government has given encouragement to industries with the aim of promoting the manufacturing of modern machinery as well as agricultural production; due to the strength of Myanmar engineers, industrial zones, factories and plants, mechanized fields and industry-based production work have emerged in so short a time. Scholars and technicians including Myanmar engineers and architects can now keep abreast with those from other nations in terms of quality, skill, innovation and ingenuity.
The sights of development of the Union today are living proof of their brilliant feats of engineering and architecture. A study of the current international situation shows that the momentum of advances in technology is great beyond measure. Every nation is exploiting technological advances for their national interests, and striving for the development of her peoples. Some big nations, having an upper hand in terms of economy and technology and exploiting that opportunity, are attempting to control the progress of developing nations for their liking.
Today, the Union of Myanmar, a developing nation, with the strength of national forces, is to double their efforts to enable itself to swim with the tide of international development by keeping national interests intact, to prevent itself from falling into the clutches of some big nations and to promote national development. Therefore, the State Peace and Development Council, mobilizing national forces sector wise, has given encouragement with a view to enabling them to be efficient and dynamic and strive for national interests with full vigour. The government has seen to it that forces concerning agriculture, industry, finance and forestry have emerged and contributed to development of national economy.
At the same time, scholars from education, health and social sectors as well as from the economic sector have been mobilized, and encouragement is being given with the aim of enabling them to contribute to the development of the nation and uplift of the standard of health, fitness and education standards of the entire nation.
As engineers and architects play a pivotal role in building the nation anew and striving for economic and social development, the government has given encouragement with the aim of mobilizing engineers and architects as a national force and forming Myanmar Engineering Society. It is found that due to the encouragement and assistance of the government and efforts of member engineers and architects of the society, Myanmar Engineering Society is standing as an active and dynamic association. Today, Myanmar Engineering Society has a membership of about 6,000. In accord with its objectives, the society has held paper-reading sessions and seminars and arranged for publishing magazines and publications with a view to disseminating technical know-how and sharing experiences with new generations.
Moreover, it is encouraging to see that the association has become a full-fledged member of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organization and is actively participating in its activities. It is also found that Myanmar Engineer Association is cooperating with governmental organizations, international organizations and others concerning trade, services and construction. In cooperation with Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs Association, it is opening diploma courses and providing employment opportunities for course graduates. As these activities have contributed greatly to improvement of standard of construction work and continuous emergence of new generations, more and more similar activities are to be carried out. The fields of engineering and architecture are wide and profound, and they are changing and improving with the passage of time; everybody needs to make continued efforts to be able to keep pace with international advances in engineering and architecture. Ways and means are to be sought to enhance the quality of individual members and the association.
Myanmar Engineer Association is made up of engineers and architects of departments and private enterprises, and seasoned persons need to share their rich experience with new generations. Upholding the tradition of striving for the development of the Union on self-reliance, they are to speed up their efforts to enable the Union of Myanmar to keep abreast with others in terms of development. The Secretary-1 expressed his wish, saying '"May the association, as a dynamic and efficient national force, be able to make continued efforts to enable the nation to keep pace with others in the international changing trend, to strive for development of the national economy and to contribute to improvement of living standard of all the people.
In conclusion, the Secretary-1 called on all to strive for the perpetuation and progress of Myanmar Engineering Society, to make efforts to enable the nation to keep abreast with other nations in terms of development with their collective strength, dynamic nationalistic spirit and skill and to uphold the fine tradition of promoting national economic development on self-reliance and exhorted seasoned engineers and architects to share their rich experience and knowledge with engineers and architects of new generation.
