YANGON, 23 Dec-On the occasion of the birthday of His Majesty Akihito, Emperor of Japan, which falls on 23  December 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime  Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Majesty
Akihito, Emperor of Japan and  His Excellency Mr Yoshiro Mori, Prime Minister of Japan.

Senior General Than Shwe inspects Traditional Medicine and Medical Equipment Exhibition

YANGON, 22 Dec-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services  Senior General Than Shwe inspected Traditional Medicine and Medical Equipment Exhibition at Tatmadaw  Convention Centre on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this morning.

Accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of  Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Deputy Prime  Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Chief of Staff (Navy)
Rear-Admiral Kyi Min and officials at the  State Peace and Development Council Office, Senior General Than Shwe arrived at Traditional Medicine and  Medical Equipment Exhibition at Tatmadaw Convention Centre at 9.25 am today.

Then, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, Director-General of  Traditional Medicine Department Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun and officials conducted Senior General Than Shwe  and party round the exhibition. The Senior General and party inspected the stone inscription of Tetnwe Monastery  created in First Innwa period from ME 804 to ME 830 (1442-1468), booths on history of Myanmar traditional  medicine, modern traditional medicine, documents concerning the traditional medicine conferences and paper  reading sessions and accomplishments of Traditional Medicine Development Branch and displays at other booths.  Senior General Than Shwe said scientific research on the potency of the therapies of traditional medicine should  be conducted in
making them well-known to the public.

Traditional medical sciences of the neighbouring countries should be studied and bilateral traditional medical science  exchange programmes should be launched in promoting the indigenous medicine in Myanmar. Plans should be laid  down to grow more medicinal trees and plants of the rare species in order to conserve them. Arrangements should  be made in ensuring wider use and distribution of potent traditional medicines in all towns and villages. Efforts  should be made to set up modern libraries for
perpetuation of papers and books on Myanmar traditional medicine  and enabling medical practitioners to make easy references.

The Senior General and party then inspected the booths of the traditional medicine producers and distributors and  private raw material producers and distributors, the booth of the Ministry of
Agriculture and Irrigation displaying  medicinal trees and plants, medicines and equipment, the booth of the Ministry of Industry-1 displaying medicinal  trees and plants and traditional medicines produced by Myanma Pharmaceutical Industry and the Ministry of  Forestry booth displaying medicinal trees and plants, medicines and equipment. Senior General Than Shwe gave  necessary instructions to officials concerned and left the venue at 11.45 am.

(2) Tipitakas in Gon Shan dialect donated to Sayadaws

Yangon, 22 Dec - A ceremony to donate the Tipitakas, the three repositories of Buddhist Scriptures, in Gon Shan  dialect by State Ovadacariya Agga Maha Pandita Naga Hnakaung Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammasiri  was held at the pandal of Naga Hnakaung Kyaungtaik in Tachilek this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State  Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were Secretary Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru  Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Kumara, Sayadaws and members of the Sangha, the  commander, ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development  Council Office, senior military officers of Tachilek Station, heads of department, district and township authorities,  local national people and disciples. Secretary Sayadaw
Bhaddanta Kumara invested the congregation with the Five  Precepts.

On behalf of Naga Hnakaung Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammasiri, Bhaddanta Suddhamma explained  matters related to the Tipitakas in Gon Shan dialect.

Then, the Secretary-1 said that he has known from Sayadaws the fact that venerable monks learnt by rote the  Suttas, the Vinayas and the Abidhamma, the discourses of the Buddha; in 450 Buddhist Era, the fourth Buddhist  Synod was held, and the Buddhist's discourses were committed to palm leaves.
Nations from all corners of the  world had these Pitakas copied and rendered them into their respective dialects. Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh,  Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Kayin, PaO, Shan and Gon Shan also printed the Pitakas in respective dialects.  According to the dialects, there have been Myanmar
Pitakas, Kayin Pitakas, PaO Pitakas, Shan Pitakas and Gon  Shan Pitakas. In the earlier days, the Pitakas were copied by hand. Later, printing machines have emerged, and  books on the Pitakas have been printed. Although there were Pitakas books in many dialects, there was no Pitakas  book in Gon Shan
dialect. So, Naga Hnakaung Kyaung Sayadaw in Tachilek had moulds made and arranged for the emergence of Gon Shan Pitakas books.

It is learnt that these Gon Shan Pitakas books will be donated to Kengtung region, Zinmai region and Hsithsaungpana region. As books on Gon Shan Pitakas will be donated, student monks who know Gon Shan  dialect can read religious literature and learn them by rote. Buddhist Sasana will flourish all the more in these  regions. The government provided assistance for the making of moulds to print the Pitakas in Gon Shan dialect.  According to the Ovada of the Sayadaws in Kengtung region, the Pitakas will be printed in Myanmar and Gon Shan.

Then, the Secretary-1 presented books on the Pitakas and offertories to the Sayadaws. Afterwards, the commander and the ministers offered alms to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Secretary Sayadaw  Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon, followed by the sharing of merits for the good deeds.

Border trade helps develop national economy, border towns and improve living standards of local people

Yangon, 22 Dec- Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected Tachilek region development tasks and met  departmental personnel yesterday and today.

Accompanied by ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development  Council Office and heads of department, the Secretary-1 left here for Tachilek by air yesterday afternoon.

On arrival at Tachilek in Shan State East, the Secretary-1 and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace  and Development Council Commander of Shan State East Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle  Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, officials, local authorities and members
of the Union Solidarity and  Development Association. At the Golden Triangle Hotel, the Secretary-1 met departmental personnel and discussed  regional development tasks.

He said political, economic and social changes have been effected in developing and modernizing the Union of  Myanmar. Due to ardent participation of the entire national people and efforts of the staff of the ministries,  favourable conditions for political stability and economic development have been created to a certain extent.  However, in a bid to apply pressure on Myanmar, some big nations are still disturbing the nation's economic  endeavours.

Myanmar an agro-based nation is striving to develop her economy based on agriculture. Efforts are being made in  various sectors in order to develop industrial production, import substitute goods
production, trade and tourism  industry; border trade also is an important sector.

As the government is giving systematic encouragement for mutual progress in border trade, the border trade as  well as the border towns are developing with greater momentum. Border trade not only helps promote national  economy but also assists in  developing border towns and living standards of local
people with high velocity; thus, it  is required to make efforts for flourishing of border trade in accord with the rules, collecting taxes and conducting  management tasks. Departmental staff in addition to discharging their duties should also make collective efforts for  successful implementation of the State's plans and objectives.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein and officials reported to the Secretary-1 on progress in implementing regional  development tasks and requirements, joined in by ministers and deputy ministers. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  gave suggestions. Accompanied by the commander, the Secretary-1 and party
visited Meiyan check point in  Tachilek Township on Tachilek-Kengtung Road this morning. Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan  explained functions of the check point. Director of Tachilek Office of Border Trade Department Lt-Col Saw Hla Tun  presented implementations of border trade in fiscal 2000-2001.

Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun reported to the Secretary-1 on collection of taxes.  Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein presented supplementary reports on border trade activities in Tachilek Township.  Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt looked into the requirements. The Secretary-1 and
party then inspected  construction of Meiyan Toll Gate on Tachilek-Kengtung Road in Tachilek.

The tasks is being undertaken by Hong Pang Company. At the briefing hall, the Secretary-1 heard a report on  progress in building Kengtung-Mongphyat-Tachilek Road presented by an official. The Secretary-1 and party  inspected progress in building the gate and control tower. They then inspected the chosen site to build Hsanhsai  Basic Education Middle School and a new hospital in the township.

Later, they inspected Friendship Bridge Project  to link Tachilek and Meisai in Thailand.

At Tachilek Airport Extension Project, the Secretary-1 heard a report on progress in implementing the project  presented by Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein and Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe. The Secretary-1  and party arrived back here this evening. Deputy Minister for Health Prof Dr Mya
Oo, who accompanied the  Secretary-1, inspected Tachilek Township People's Hospital.

(3) Government implementing water supply and land reclamation tasks for nation's long-term interest

YANGON, 22 Dec - Moemakha Sluice Gate in Twantay Township, Yangon Division, was commissioned into service  this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were members of the  Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and South-West  Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Ministers, deputy ministers, officials, local authorities, local people, members  of social organizations, teachers, students and farmers totalling over
20,000.

Secretary-2 said located near Panhlaing village on Panhlaing Creek, the Moemakha Sluice Gate comprising 37  valves will irrigate 40,000 acres in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions. Nyaungdonkyun was inundated during rainy  season due to the overflowing waters of the Ayeyawady River which flowed into Panhlaing and Moemakha  creeks through Toe River. Moemakha Sluice Gate will prevent the Nyaung-donkyun from flooding for a long time  during rainy season. Fresh water from Toe River will be
supplied to late monsoon paddy fields at Nyaungdonkyun  and Shwe-mayin regions through the gate.

The seven-valve Zeebyugon Sluice Gate in Twantay Township which was opened recently is irrigating nearly  7,500 acres. Together with the Moemakha Sluice Gate, it will divert the flood waters from Nyaungdonkyun.  Drainage canals are being dug and embankments and floodgates are being built in order to effectively use the  wetlands in Yangon Division; due to these efforts more land will be put under monsoon and summer paddy.

The new Moemakha Floodgate, and the existing Kungyangon, Zeebyugon, Kabin, Kamakalun, Tawkhayan,  Khalauktaya, Alathse, Kywegawchaung, Hmeinpale and Mashweou floodgates and the drainage canals will irrigate  nearly 200,000 acres of land in Yangon Division.

The Secretary-2 quoted the Head of State Senior General Than Shwe's guidance, which said, energetic efforts are  being made to promote agriculture, which is the basic sector of the State's economy, as food sufficiency is the  most important requirement in human life; as land and water are the basic needs in agriculture, irrigation facilities  are being built to fulfil that requirement; as the State is rendering necessary assistance to farmers in enabling them  to conduct business conveniently, the farmers should
also dutifully conduct their farming business.

Thus, the government is implementing water availability and land reclamation tasks for the nation's future interest. A  study of summer and monsoon paddy cultivation in Yangon Division shows that the number of acres of cultivated  lands is gradually increasing. In 1998-99, there were 1.135 million acres of monsoon paddy, 0.197 million acres of  summer paddy; in 1999-2000, there were over 1.162 million acres of monsoon paddy and over 0.25 acres of  summer paddy; this year, monsoon paddy was cultivated on
over 1.175 million acres of land; arrangements are  being made to cultivate summer paddy on up to 0.3 million acres of land.

It is encouraging to see that in Yangon Division, monsoon and summer paddy has been grown on the acres which  exceed the targets; in a way, it is the results of concerted efforts of the State and farmers. Unlike other states and  divisions, Yangon Division does not have much fallow and virgin land; therefore, it is difficult to extend sown  acreage; however, under the leadership of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, district and township  authorities, agricultural organizations and local
farmers have cooperated in growing crops without leaving any  patches of fallow and virgin land uncultivated; therefore, the sown acreage has increased.

As Moemakha Sluice-gate has been built, fields can now be prevented from being flooded. In the coming year,  paddy sown acreage will increase in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions. Fallow and virgin land has been turned  into cultivable land, and high technology and good strains are to be used.Moreover, agricultural and livestock  breeding zones are being set up in Yangon Division to enable the people to buy fresh meat, fish and vegetables at  reasonable prices. The demand of Yangon can be fulfilled with fishes and prawns sent from Twantay region and  from livestock breeding zones, and surpluses can be exported. In contributing to the economic development of the  State, Yangon Division,
like Ayeyawady Division, is in the vanguard.

Officials in Yangon Division are to cooperate with the farmers and working people in striving for the economic  development of the entire nation. At the same time, all are to keep a weather eye open on activities of  above-ground and underground destructionists designed to break up the Union and to impede development of the  nation. In conclusion, the Secretary-2 said that favourable conditions necessary for the development of the nation  have been achieved, and the nation has better prospects of making progress with momentum, and urged all the  national people to work the hardest and to maintain and safeguard sluice gates and dams.

Then, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said it is an auspicious day for Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions  when Moemakha Sluice Gate is opened in Twantay Township. The sluice gate will be also to supply water not only  to 10,000 acres of land in Shwemayin field in Twantay Township but also summer
paddy and double cropping in  the area. Due to water control of Thawuntaw, Takahle, Kywetalin and Hsibyugon sluice gates as well as  Moemakha sluice gate will be able to increase from over 20,000 acres of paddy cultivation to over 30,000. Due to  difficult cultivation of paddy at Shwemayin field, regional development tasks such as paddy plus fish projects and  fish ponds were carried out. At present, local farmers can turned one phase paddy cultivation into summer paddy  and double cropping. Their per
capita income will be increased and social living standard will be uplifted soon.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann said Ayeyawady Division is one of the most paddy cultivation  area in the country. A large area of vacant and virgin lands were remained in the division. Traditional entrepreneurs  participate in agricultural work in vacant, virgin and wetlands of the division. So far, 600,000 acres of land have  been reclaimed in Ayeyawady Division and 400,000 acres of land turned into agricultural land. Over 190,000 acres  of cultivable land have been in Nyaungdon Island among a lot of islands in the division.

A total of 11 sluice gates were built in Nyaungdon Island. As a result of the sluice gates, about 60,000 acres of  cultivable land were increased in the island. Moemakha Sluice Gate will be able to supply water to about 30,000  acres of land in Nyaungdon Island. Construction Group-6 of Irrigation Department made efforts for construction of  the sluice gate in a short time. Local people are to maintain the sluices gates built at a cost of large sum of money  by the State. Then, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said the government is make efforts for  availability of water for cultivation by various ways.

Not only dams, embankments and diversion weirs but also sluice gates were built. Moemakha Sluice Gate is biggest  one among all sluice gates. Local people mast maintain the slice gate which will support for development of local  agricultural sector. Ministers Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Col Thein Nyunt and Deputy Minister Col Thaik Tun  extended greetings. Executive of Twantay Township USDA U Mya Thaung spoke words of thanks.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin presented bonus for employees of Construction Group-6 to officials and formally  unveiled the stone plaque of the sluice gate. Director of Construction Group-6 U Khin Maung Yu formally opened the  sluice gate. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party posed for
documentary photo together with officials of  Construction Group-6 and local people.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the sluice gate and cordially met local people. Moemakha Sluice Gate  was built at the junction of Kaboe River and Panhlaing Creek at Panhlaing Village, Twantay Township. There are 37  doors, 6 feet x 12 feet size, at the sluice gate. The canal is 3,000 feet long, 250 feet wide and 22 feet deep.

Construction of the sluice gate started on 1 November 99 and completed on 15 December 2000. The sluice gate  was built at a cost of K 352 million and will be able to supply water to over 40,000 acres of land. The 18 feet wide  door of the sluice gate for water craft was also built at a cost of over K 51 million.

Secretary-2 meets fish breeders in Twantay Township

YANGON, 22 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with fish breeders  from Shwemayin region in Twantay Township, Yangon Division, this afternoon.

Together with member of the Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, the deputy minister for forestry,  officials and departments concerned, the Secretary-2 met with departmental officials engaged in fish breeding at  Shwemayin Fish Breeding Camp of Yangon Command in Twantay Township.

Chairman of Twantay Township Peace and Development Council U Aung Kyaw reported on the area of the  township, the condition of fish breeding industry in the township and agriculture work. Yangon Division  Superintending Engineer of Public Works U Soe Nyunt reported on the condition of building a motor road linking No 5  Highway in Hlaingthaya Industrial Zone with Dalla and Twantay.

Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein gave an additional  report on the condition of Dalla-Twantay Motor Road. Head of Yangon Division Fishery Department U Khin Maung  Win reported that there are 27,000 acres of fish ponds in Yangon Division
and 21,924 acres of fish ponds in  Twantay Township; the area of fish breeding has been divided into six regions; Shwemayin region is a large one  taking up 7,888 acres; fishes have been sent from Twantay Township to Yangon City. The officials of battalions  and units, departments and entrepreneurs who have got the land permits for breeding fish reported on progress of  work.

Maj Thet Hlaing in charge of Shwemayin Fish Breeding Camp of Yangon Command reported that Yangon Command  bred fish on 63.8 acres of land in 1988-89; now fishes have been bred on up to 1,000 acres of land; fishes are  being put on the market not only in the nation but also abroad. The officials of battalions and units, departments and  entrepreneurs engaged in fish breeding industry reported on progress of work in digging fish ponds, transport,  loans, installation of telephone lines and feedstuff for fish.

Assistant Director of Yangon South District Irrigation Department U Ye Myint Soe explained matters related to the  sending of fish to Yangon in time and arrangements for building drains and proper flow of water. Minister for  Livestock Breeding and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein explained matters pertaining to loans. Commander  Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than spoke about arrangements to breed fish in all the possible regions in Twantay Township,  measures taken for cultivation of summer paddy at
Shewmayinkyun and assistance to be provided.

Then, the Secretary-2 said that Twantay Township has the largest acres of fish ponds in the entire nation.  Agricultural work, as well as livestock breeding, is successful in the township. The  Secretary-2 also spoke of the  purpose of his visit to the region and assistance to be provided. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 inspected fish ponds  of Yangon Command. The Secretary-2 and party also observed the fish ponds of U Saw Aye Ko. The Secretary-2  and party left there for Yangon by helicopter at 4.45 p.m.

Myanmar Industries Association holds Seventh Annual Meeting

YANGON, 22 Dec- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the Seventh  Annual Meeting of Myanmar Industries Association at the Traders Hotels at 3.45 p.m. today.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office  Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung  Kyaw, President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of
Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and CEC  members, President of Myanmar Industries Association U Htein Win and CEC members and guests. President of  Myanmar Industries Association U Htein Win gave an opening address. Then, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone extended  greetings. General Secretary of
MIA U Zaw Min Win presented the CEC report, the financial report and rules and  regulations of the association and sought the approval of those present at the meeting.

Vice-President-2 U Tun Aye took part in the discussions. Then, the old CEC and EC members resigned. Then, Joint  General Secretary of UMFCCI U Pyone Maung Maung announced lists of new CEC and EC members of MIA for  2000-2001 fiscal year. Afterwards, 26 well-wishers presented K 1,575,000 to MIA.
Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone,  Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and President of UMFCCI U Win Myint accepted the donations and presented  certificates of honour to the donors. Next, President U Htein Win of MIA gave the concluding remarks. After the  meeting, the Secretary-2 and ministers viewed personal and household goods and cosmetics displayed by  companies.

(4) Tipitaka treatise translated to local language conveyed in Tachilek

YANGON, 23 Dec- A ceremony to convey Tipitaka treatise translated into local language donated by member of the  Central Working Committee of the Sangha Tachilek Naga Hnakaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta  Dhammasiri was held at the platform of Tachilek Shwedagon Pagoda on 14 December morning.

Present were Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dhammasiri and members of the Sangha, Commander of Regional Control  Command (Mongphyat) Brig-Gen Than Aung, Chairman of Tachilek District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col  Thet Naing Win, officials, traditional cultural dance troupes, social associations and local people.

At 8 am, over 3,000 local people participated in the conveyance of the Tipitaka treatise on a grand scale from the  platform of the pagoda to Naga Hnakaung Kyaungtaik through Bogyoke Aung San Road, the Goodwill Bridge and  Triangle Roundabout. The merit-sharing ceremony for the donations was held at the Kyaungtaik. From 14 to 21  December nights, Sayadaws gave lectures to the congregation.

Mindhamma Hill packed with monks, devotees

YANGON, 22 Dec - Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept was  crowded with monks and devotees today. Wellwishers are making donations to the fund of the Image. The  donations received from 5 August to date amounted to over K 115,286,634. Engineers and workers are carrying  out all-round construction work of Mindhamma Hill. Stone sculptor U Taw Taw and sons are carving the Image  daily. Book shops of the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Information are selling religious books,  encyclopaedia and calendars.

YANGON, 22 Dec- Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone met Managing Director Mr Nguyen Cong Kien and party  of Win Forest Products Corporation, Socialist  Republic of Vietnam at his office this afternoon. Also present were  Director-General U Nyunt Aye of Directorate of Trade, Managing Director U Min Hla Aung of Myanma Agricultural  Produce Trading and officials.

YANGON, 22 Dec-An educative drama on anti-AIDS " Khu-khan-ah Ma-kya-zay-lo-ba " to mark World AIDS Day,  organized by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar Red Cross Society, was presented at  MMCWA, at the corner of Thanthuma Road and Parami Road, South
Okkalapa Township, this morning. It was  attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and CEC  members, honorary patrons, President of MRCS Dr Kyaw Win and officials, health officers of States and Divisions,  members of MMCWA and guests. President Dr Kyaw Win made an opening speech. Then, the drama was  presented. Afterwards, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented the flower basket and cash to those who participated in  the drama through Ma Moh Moh Lwin of Kyimyindine Township Red Cross Society and President Dr Kyaw Win.

(6) Delegates of Traditional Medical Practitioners' Conference visit Yangon downtown

YANGON, 21 Dec-Two groups of delegates from States and Divisions who attended the Traditional Medical  Practitioners' Conference visited Yangon downtown this morning. The excursion group-1 visited Myanma  Pharmaceutical Factory in Insein Township, Hlinethaya Industrial City, Max soft drinks
factory, Panhlaing Golf  Course, FMI City and Aungzeya Bridge in Hlinethaya. The excursion group-2 also visited Shwedagon Pagoda,  Medical Research Department, Traditional Medicine Exhibition, Yangon Traditional Medicine Hospital and Traditional  Medicine Factory.

Neuro-surgical equipment donated to MGH

YANGON, 21 Dec-Neuro- surgical Specialist Dr F Gray Gieseke and wife Daw Kath, mother Daw Khin Ma Gyi (  Writer Padamya Khin ) and family donated neuro- surgical equipment worth US$ 12,750 to Neuro-surgical  Department of Mandalay General Hospital on Theinbyu Road this afternoon.  Daw Khin Ma Gyi ( Writer Padamya Khin  ) explained the purpose of donation, and Prof Dr Myint Thein of Neuro-surgical Department of  MGH expressed  thanks.  Then, Daw Khin Ma Gyi presented the equipment to Deputy Director- General Dr U Hla Pe.

(7) Myanmar Traditional Apparel Show opens

YANGON, 22 Dec- A ceremony to open the Myanmar Traditional Apparel Show, co-organized by Cultural
Institute  Department, Archaeology Department, Fine Arts Department and University of Culture, was held at the National  Museum on Pyay Road this morning. Present were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's  Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister  for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office  Brig-Gen Lun Maung, officials of foreign
missions and officials.

First, Minister for Culture U Win Sein gave an opening address and formally opened the show. Then, the ministers  and guests viewed the show. Afterwards, the demonstrations of Myanmar traditional apparel show were  presented on costumes of national races, dresses of Bagan, Inwa, Nyaungyan, Konbaung, Amarapura and  Yadanabon periods, dresses of ladies of university in pre-war and post-war periods and from 1965 to date, and  demonstration of Myanma traditional novitiation ceremony.

The show will remain open from 9 am to 5 p.m. daily from 22 December 2000 to 21 January 2001. Admission fee is K  10 for adult, K 5 for child and 2 FECs for foreigner. On Saturdays and Sundays, demonstration of the Myanmar  Traditional Apparel Show will be presented. Dr Khin Maung Nyunt, Tanpawady U Win Maung, U Sein Aung Min,  Myamalar Silk Garment House, Saw Mon Nyin, Daw Kyi Lay The, Daw Khin Myo Nwe, Daw Kyawt Hmu Aung,  Forever Group Co Ltd, Reve Lyon make-up,
Daw Tin Moe Lwin and group, Daw Nu Nu Swe and Academy Nanda  Hlaing contributed to the show.

(8)  Minister for Information inspects Sarpay Beikmen and Naing-ngan Gonyi Publishing House

YANGON, 22 Dec-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung arrived at Sarpay Beikman of Printing and Publishing  Enterprise at the corner of Merchant Street and 37th Street this morning. He was welcomed there by  Director-General U Chit Naing of Information and Public Relations Department, Managing
Director Col Myint Thein of  Printing and Publishing Enterprise, Central Executive Committee Member of Myanmar Writers and Journalists  Association U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin), Secretary Director U Hla Tun (Hla Tun-Twantay) of News and  Periodicals Enterprise, Joint Secretary U Myint Kywe (Maung
Myint Kywe) and CEC members, Chief Editor U Maung  Hlaing (Maung Swe Nge) of Sarpay Beikmen, Chief Editor Lt-Col Ohn Maung (Retd) (Myinmu Maung Naing Moe) and  editors of Naing-ngan Gonyi magazine and officials. First, the minister inspected round Sarpay Beikman. Then, he  inspected
preparatory work for Naing-ngan Gonyi Publishing House there. Chief Editor Lt-Col Ohn Maung (Retd) conducted the minister around the House. Afterwards, he inspected the public library, reference books section,  meeting hall and office of MWJA (Central) and book shop. He gave necessary instructions and
left there at 11.30  p.m.

(9)  10 Aungmyethasan Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 22 Dec-Ten members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Aungmyethasan Township,  Mandalay Division. Ten members of Aungmyethasan Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Aungmyethasan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 30 October 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party  politics of NLD.
