Appointment of Head of Delegation of European Commission agreed on
YANGON, 22 Dec-The government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of HE Mr Klauspeter Schmallenbach as Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Union of Myanmar in succession to His Excellency Mr Michel Caillouet.
Mr Schmallenbach was born in 1940. He studied law, economic and political science at the Universities of Cologne and Innsbruck in Germany and at the Institute of Political Science in Paris, France. He joined the Secretariat of the European Commission in Brussels in 1969. He served in the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs as an Administrator in charge of Monetary, Economic and Financial Questions on EC enlargement from
1969 to 1975. He was promoted Principal Administrator in charge of North/South Financial and Monetary Questions and relations with IMF, IBRD and UN. He was Charge d' Affaires ai and Deputy Head of Delegation of the CEC to Australia and New Zealand in 1981. Subsequently he served in the Directorate General for External Relations in the European Commission as Principal Administrator and Chairman of the EC Textiles Committee
from 1987 to 1993. In March 1994, he was appointed Ambassador/Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam with residence in Jakarta. Mr Klauspeter SCHMALLENBACH will be concurrently accredited as Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to the Union of Myanmar and will reside in Bangkok.

(4) Delegates to Traditional Medical Practitioners' Conference on tour
YANGON, 21 Dec-Delegates from the states and divisions who attended the Traditional Medical Practitioners' Conference visited the centre of Yangon in two groups this morning. Group No 1 of the delegates led by Director Dr Sein Win of Traditional Medicine Department, Ministry of Health visited the Shwedagon Pagoda at 10.30 am.
They presented cash donated towards the pagoda funds to Secretary of the Board of Trustees to Secretary U Win
Kyaing who presented certificates of honour to the donors. Then, they headed for Medical Research Department of
the Ministry on Ziwaka Street in Dagon Township where Director-General of the Department Professor Dr Paing
Soe extended greetings and explained procedures of the research to the delegates.The delegates viewed four laboratories related to the indigenous medicine. Afterwards, they arrived at medicine and medical equipment showrooms of the ministries and the entrepreneurs on Uwizara Road where officials explained production of medicine to them. The party also visited Yangon Indigenous Hospital on Ngahtatgyi Pagoda Road where they were welcomed and conducted around the hospital by Medical Superintendent Dr Thein
Kyaw and officials. Delegates U Soe Min (Myitkyina) of Kachin State and U Aung Min (Myeik) of Taninthayi Division donated K 5,000 each to Dr Thein Kyaw for the hospital. The delegates also visited Traditional Medicine Factory. Similarly, Group No 2 of the delegates led by Head of Yangon Division Indigenous Medicine Department U Paw Nyein visited Myanma Pharmaceutical Factory in Insein Township and Hlinethaya Industrial Zone this morning.

YANGON, 21 Dec - A ceremony to convey South-East Asia Anti-Tobacco Flame was held in the hall of the Institute of Nursing on Bogyoke Aung San Street in Lanmadaw Township this morning. Present were Director-General of the Department of Health Dr Wan Maung, Deputy Director-General Dr Soe Aung, directors and
officials, Head of Yangon Health Department Dr Tin Maung Win and officials, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and officials, district and township level departmental officials, heads of Township Health Department, members of social organizations and students
exceeding 1,500.Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein took the flame from the stage at 7 am and handed it over to leader of the anti-tobacco flame conveying team athlete Phone Myint Teza. The team conveyed the Anti-Tobacco Flame by car, flanked by athletes and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association. The anti-tobacco flame was conveyed along Bogyoke Aung San Street, Botahtaung Pagoda Road, Maha Bandoola Street, Maha Bandoola Bridge,
Shukhintha Road, Thanlyin Bridge and Kyaikkhauk Road.The anti-tobacco flame arrived at Thiha Dipa Sports Hall at 7.45 am. The anti-tobacco flame was welcomed by Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein, district and township level departmental officials, members of social organizations, students and band troupes totalling 2,500. Athlete Phone Myint Teza handed over the anti-tobacco flame to Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein, who conveyed and

On arrival at Hmaw-byhsan Hall of the Special Zone-1, he was welcomed by the members of the Supervisory
Committee.Divisional Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U San Maung reported to him on the plans for paving granite roads and installation of power cables, Divisional Director U Tin Maung Win of the Irrigation Department on progress of work in digging of canals to irrigate the fields of the Special Zone from the main right canal of
Ngamoeyeik Dam, Commissioner U Thein Swe of General Administration Department on land preparation work,
Divisional Staff Officer U Myint Soe of the Water Resources Utilization Department on sinking of tube-wells, and local entrepreneurs on the difficulties, requirements and progress of work in cultivation of vegetables and poultry farming.The Commander spoke of the need for completion of one-way access roads through the Special Zones-2 and 3 that are required for installation of electric power cables. He said national entrepreneurs will be able to implement their livestock farming tasks as soon as possible. It is also required for the Special Zone Supervisory Committee members to coordinate with the entrepreneurs and provide assistance to them. Entrepreneurs, he said, are also required to get adequate water supply for their farms by means of pumping underground water while the project is
under way to irrigate the fields from Ngamoeyeik Dam. He also urged the livestock breeders to start establishment of their farms. He then inspected the farms and progress of work. He then inspected the vegetable farms of Sein Enterprise where Managing Director U Sein Oo reported on the work. He also toured the tomato plantations of Marlar Myaing Agriculture Group and farms of Green Zone Agriculture Group and construction site of battery cage system poultry farms, and inspected land preparation work at the Agriculture and Livestock Breeding zone-3. (6) Work coordinated to build palm oil mills
YANGON, 21 Dec - The committee for ensuring the construction of oil mills held a meeting at the Office of the Prime Minister on Alanpya Pagoda Road in Dagon Township this afternoon. It was attended by Chairman of the Committee Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, members of the Committee and personnel of companies. Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung
said that arrangements have been made to grow oil palms on 500,000 acres of land in order to meet the demand of the nation. Some targeted acres of land have been placed under oil palms and some still remain uncultivated.Over 16,000 acres of oil palms are now ready for the production of palm oil, and therefore, oil mills are needed. At present, there are one oil mill at Pugawzun and another mill at Launglon. In some oil palm plantations, palm oil mills have been built with the use of local-made machinery, but they are not up to the standard. He added that so, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on building oil palm mills. No 03 Brand Oil Mill has been turned into an oil palm mill, which can produce 25 tons of crude palm oil and 10 tons of refined palm oil per day. The purpose of the meeting is to coordinate work for construction of palm oil mills. Secretary of the Committee Managing Director of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise U Myint Oo reported on machinery to be used in building palm oil mills,
expenditures and the production rate of palm oil. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung.
Manufacturing quality parts for locomotives stressedYANGON, 21 Dec Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin this afternoon gave suggestions on manufacturing parts for diesel locomotives and quality control related with the tasks for promotion of passenger and commodity transport at Insein Locomotive Shed of Myanma Railways.
He said this year, Myanma Railways has transported a greater volume of passengers and commodities than the previous year, and earned more in the first eight months. During 1999-2000, 38 locomotives are used for wagon trains to transport 3.39 million tons of commodities, and it is essential to continue to provide effective supervision not to cause delays of the freight trains and not to cause breakdowns of locomotives, and to carry loads to their full
capacity. He urged the officials and workers to strive for manufacturing light locomotives and quality parts locally.

YANGON, 21 Dec-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraph Brig-Gen Win Tin arrived at Shwemyintin Microwave Station, Ayeyawady western bank, Seikpyu Township, and inspected microwave antenna tower, staff housing, power supply and microwave room and gave instructions on 17 December morning. The minister attended the consecration ceremony of Bagan ancient pagoda No 854 on 19 December. At the auspicious time,
members of the Sangha consecrated the pagoda No 854. Then, Bagan Thabbinnyu-kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddantananinda administered the Five Precepts. Member of the Sangha recited the metta sutta.The minister supplicated on the renovation of the pagoda. Then, the minister and family presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. minister proceeded to NyaungU Post Office and inspected conditions of its income, receiving and sending telegrams and sending foreign express mails, and left instructions.
No-11 LID wins C-in-C's Hockey C'ship Trophy
YANGON, 21 Dec - The final match of the 2000 Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Hockey tourney was held at Pathein Station Hockey Pitch on 19 December. YANGON, 21 Dec - National Championship men and women's swimming and water polo contests will be held under the sponsorship of Myanmar Swimming Federation at the international-level swimming pool in Dagon Myothit North from 26 to 30 December. Swimming competitions will be held on 26 and 27 December and water polo matches from 28 to 30 December. Men's 1,500-metre and women's 800-metre swimming contests will be held at National Swimming Pool on 22 December.
(8) Drug traffickers get prison terms
YANGON, 21 Dec-The Kengtung District Court passed a sentence of prison terms on two drug traffickers on 6
September this year. The case was that acting on information, at Tapin check-point, Kengtung, on 9 August 2000, personnel of local intelligence unit and Kengtung Anti-drug Squad, searched a Toyota Hilux with a number plate 9Ka/3872 with Aik Tun at the wheel and Aik Hsa, a passenger, and seized 218,000 stimulant tablets and two packets of chemical powder weighing two kilos. Aik Tun, 33, son of U Thein Pe, of Pansai, and Aik Hsa, 24, son of U Aik Hsan, the same town, were filed under Section 15/19(A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Kengtung District Court sentenced Aik Tun to 3 years' imprisonment under Section 15 and 30 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) to serve separately and Aik Hsa to 31 years' imprisonment under Section 19(A)
of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.Two men jailed for drug trafficking
YANGON, 21 Dec-The Katha District Court handed down a sentence of 20 years' imprisonment each on two men for trafficking raw opium on 23 November this year. The case was that a combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Railways Police Force, acting on information, at 10 am on 29 January 2000, searched Maung Maung Than and Maung Maung Myint on board sleeping coach (B) of Mandalay-Myitkyina No 41 up train and seized 6.124 kilos of raw opium kept in their knapsack. The Intaw Police Station filed Maung Maung Than, 37, son of U Aik, of Mogaung Region, Aungban, and Maung Maung Myint, 39, son of U Kyaw Mya, of Ward 9, Kalaw, under Section 15/19 (A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Katha District Court heard the case and sentenced the two to 20 years in prison each under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
(9) 11 Meiktila NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 21 Dec-Eleven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Meiktila Township, Mandalay Division. Eleven members of Meiktila NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Meiktila Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 28 October 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
