(1) Secretary-1 attends ceremony to pay respects to Sayadaw Dr RevatadhammaYANGON, 20 Dec-A ceremony to pay respects to Agga Maha Pandita Sayadaw Bhaddanta Dr Revatadhamma residing in Buddha Vihara Kyaung in Birmingham, Britain, on his 70th birthday was held at Karaweik Palace this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present were member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee led by Chairman Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Koehsaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita, members of the Sangha of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University and the State Pariyatti Sasana University (Yangon) and invited Sayadaws, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for

commemoration of the Sayadaw's birthday for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image to the Secretary-1.In his supplication, the Secretary-1 expressed his pleasure to pay respects to members of the Sangha led by Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and Sayadaw Dr Revatadhamma. He said he learnt that the Sayadaw made efforts for propagation of Theravada Buddhism in Britain and opened Vipassana centres and taught the youths abroad
Dhamma to be polite. Treatises written in Hindu and English by the Sayadaw were published, he said.He said the Sayadaw is giving lecture on Abhidhamma at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University
and the government conferred Agga Maha Pandita Title on the Sayadaw for his efforts for propagation of the Sasana. The Secretary-1 presented the photo of the Shwedagon Pagoda and a documentary book on hoisting of Htidaw of the Shwedagon Pagoda. Under the patronage of U Win Sein, Dr Daw Mar Mar Lwin of Birmingham offered soon to the members of the Sangha.
Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of conference delegates of states and divisionsYANGON, 20 Dec- Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel in honour of delegates of states and divisions who attended Myanmar Traditional Medical Practitioners' Conference at 6.30 p.m. today.
The ministers, members of National Health Committee, the deputy ministers, officials, departmental heads, members of Traditional Medicine Council, members of the Central Committee for Traditional Medicine Inspection, Others Association, Myanmar Health Assistants Association and Myanmar Dental Surgeons
Association and guests attended it. During the dinner, Myanma cultural music troupe of Karaweik Palace presented variety songs to the audience.
(2) Secretary-2 visits Traditional Medical Exhibition
YANGON, 20 Dec- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo visited the Traditional
Medical Exhibition at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road this morning. Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Secretary-2 arrived at the exhibition at 9 am.He was welcomed there by ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy), deputy ministers, senior military officers, directors-general and officials of the exhibition. The Secretary-2, ministers, deputy ministers and officials went round the exhibition where various traditional medicine producers displayed and sold traditional drugs.
Boosting production of fish, meat and prawn coordinatedYANGON, 20 Dec-A coordination meeting on boosting production of fish, meat and prawn was held at the Fisheries Department this afternoon, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Also present were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, ministers, the deputy ministers, senior military officers, officials , members of the committee for production of fish, meat and prawn, officials of States and Divisions and guests.
The Secretary-2 said members of the committee for production of fish, meat and prawn, those in-charges, and chairmen and secretaries of the division supervisory committee are to discuss strong and weak points and requirements for success of extended production of fish and meat according to the project. He said the government has been making efforts for development of agriculture and is drafting project for development of industrial sector
that supports agriculture in accord with the economic objective development of agriculture as the base and all-round development of other sectors of the economy as well.Breeding of fish and prawn and poultry farming are being undertaken after formation of leading committee for
development of fish and meat sector and private entrepreneurs are allowed to undertake the breeding of fish and prawn and poultry farming with the government's assistance, he said. He said the three-year project for production of fish, meat and prawn is now under way and progress has been made.The Secretary-2 said among the livestock and breeding poultry farming is gaining success in a short time. He called for implementing the guidance by the Head of State in cooperation with regional authorities and providing assistance to those who are engaged in livestock on a manageable scale and farmers in rural areas. Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe reported on measures undertaken by the committee for production of fish, meat and prawn and future
tasks. Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein explained guidance of Senior General Than Shwe for development of fish and meat sector and reported on committee and sub-committees and arrangements.Chairman of Sub-committee for fish breeding Deputy Minister U Aung Thein reported on the three-year project. Next, Ministers Brig-Gen Pyi Sone reported on assistance of the ministry, Brig-Gen Lun Maung on condition of livestock and breeding and agriculture in Taninthayi Division. Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Deputy Minister
for Forestry Col Thaik Tun reported on measures undertaken in the respective sectors. A general round of discussions then followed. The Secretary-2 gave instructions on systematic supervision, making field trips to grassroots levels and fulfilling the requirements.
(3) Plans under way to develop resort facilities at Ngapali, Kanthaya and Ngwesaung beaches
YANGON, 20 Dec - Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint
inspected extension of beach resorts in Rakhine State and Ayeyawady Division and regional development
undertakings from 18 December to today. Accompanied by Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National
Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, senior officials of the Ministry of Defence, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and the respective departments and national entrepreneurs, the Secretary-3 left here by air for Thandwe in Rakhine State on 18
December morning.On arrival at Thandwe Airport, the Secretary-3 and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, senior military officers, Chairman of Thandwe District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Than, officials and members of Union Solidarity and Development Association. At
Thandwe Airport Hall, the Secretary-3 met departmental personnel and entrepreneurs and explained in detail the State's economic development endeavours and plans to further develop Ngapali beach resort. Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe explained plans to render assistance to national entrepreneurs in enabling them to make investments in building resorts at Ngapali and Kanthaya beach resorts.The Secretary-3, the commander and officials gave replies to queries raised by national entrepreneurs. During inspection of Ngapali beach from the airport to Ngapali Golf Course, the Secretary-3 gave instructions to officials. Together with the commander, the Secretary-3 and party inspected Thandwe-Gwa Road.
At Hsatthwachaung Bridge Project, the Secretary-3 and party heard a report on progress in building the bridge, future programmes and requirements. Deputy Minister U Tint Swe also gave a upplementary report. After urging officials to strive to complete the project in time, to ensure occupational safety, to minimize wastage and to work in
harmony, the Secretary-3 inspected the project.In the afternoon, the Secretary-3 and party inspected extension of facilities at Kanthaya beach resort. The next morning, the commander briefed the Secretary-3 and party and entrepreneurs on location and area of the beach resort and plans to provide assistance to entrepreneurs wishing to run resort business. The Secretary-3 gave suggestions.
In Gwa Township, the Secretary-3 and party observed the Gwa beach to find places which can be developed into resorts. The Secretary-3 and party then inspected the Rakhine State section of Yekyi-Ngathaingchaung-Gwa motorway which is being built by Public Works. At the border between Rakhine State and Ayeyawady Division, the Secretary-3 and party were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of
Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, senior military officers and departmental personnel. Accompanied by the commander and officials, the Secretary-3 and party inspected the Ayeyawady Division section of Yekyi-Ngathaingchaung-Gwa motorway.On their way from South-West Command Headquarters to Ngwesaung bear resort in Pathein Township, they inspected progress in upgrading Pathein-Ngwesaung Road and the Ngwesaung Basic Education High School. The Secretary-3 and party then attended a meeting to coordinate progress of the beach resort held at Ngwesaung Beach Resort Hotel. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint explained in detail plans to extend facilities at the resort and to upgrade Pathein-Ngwesaung Road.
Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann briefed the meeting on provision of assistance for development of the beach resort. Director of Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited Col Myint Aung reported to the Secretary-3 on progress in installation of clean water system at the beach, company-wise accomplishments in building resort facilities and arrival of necessary assistance and Manager of Asia World Company U Myat Cho Win on conditions of roads in the region and generation and distribution of power, joined in by other national entrepreneurs.
After coordinating the requirements, the Secretary-3 gave the concluding remarks. This morning, the Secretary-3 and party observed development undertakings along the beach. Afterwards, entrepreneurs who conducting business operations at the beach, presented computers and teaching aids to Ngwesaung Village BEHS. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint delivered an address at the ceremony. Chairman of Dagon International Co Ltd U Win Aung, on behalf of the entrepreneurs, presented four computers and five sets of teaching aids to the Headmaster U Lay Swe. The Secretary-3 and party arrived back here in the evening.
(4) Paper-reading session held at Myanmar Traditional Medical Practitioners Conference
YANGON, 20 Dec-The paper-reading session of the Myanmar Traditional Medical Practitioners' Conference was held in Pyidaungsu Hall in Kyaikkasan Grounds today. Present on the occasion were Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Director-General of Traditional Medicine Department Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun, Director-General of Medical Science Department Professor Dr Maung Maung Wint, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, officials of the Ministry of Health, rectors, physicians of the Traditional Medicine Council, delegates to
the conference and paper compilers. Sayagyi U Nyan Tun of the Tradtional Medicine Council presided over the session, and members of the Traditional Medicine Council Sayagyi U Nyan Lwin and Sayagyi U Mya Win were members of the board of chairmen.Sagaing Division Traditional Medicine Department Officer U Kyaw Thein Htay acted as the master of ceremonies. U Han Nyein (Mawriya Myanmar) of Monywa, U Aye Liya of Waingmaw, U Kan Win of Ayadaw, U Thiri Phone Htut of Yangon, U Thaung Hla of Medical Research Department, Myat Myat Ohn Khin of Traditional Medicine Department and Maung Maung Wint of New Yangon General Hospital, and U Aung Swe Oo of Nyaungdon, U
Tha Aung of Myitkyina, U Ba Thi of Sagaing, U Hla Tin of Waingmaw, U Phone Aung of Yangon, U Kyaw Myint of Yangon, and U Win Swe and U Kyaw Myint of Loikaw presented papers, and the session broke for lunch.In the afternoon session, U Bo Gyi (Yoke Pyo) of Shwebo, U Soe Moe Tun of Mandalay, U Kyaw Sein of Mogok, U John La Rein of Myitkyina, U Zaw Yaw Hset of Waingmaw, U Tang Kei of Taunggyi, U Sein Hlaing of Mandalay, and U Win Maung and U Mya Win of Yangon presented papers. The contents of the papers covered a wide range of potent Myanmar traditional drugs, uses of herbal plants and treatments. The papers presented by U Tha Aung of Myitkyina, U Ba Thi of Sagaing and U Hla Tin of Waingmaw control and treatment of malaria that can be of a great help in the national malaria control project, and the affordable traditional medical methods to fight against the disease. The paper by U Phone Aung of Yangon examined the causes of AIDS, some traditional
drugs to fight it and proper practices to control the disease and prevent its infection. The paper compilers responded to the questions raised by the delegates and observers to the conference.
Conference on Views and Visions in the Literary Heritage of SEA endsYANGON, 20 Dec-The Conference on Views and Visions in the Literary Heritage of SEA continued for the third and final day at International Business Centre on Pyay Road today. Present on the occasion were researchers of Universities' Historical Research Department, professors, associate professors and lectures of History and Myanmarsar Departments of universities and colleges, officials, members of Myanmar Historical Commission, resource persons of Australia, Bangladesh, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, America, Britain and Vietnam and observers. Adviser Dr Withaga Sachorithanarugse presided over the morning session.
Professor (Retd) Dr V Balambal of India, Associate Professor Daw Aye Aye Ngon of Monywa University, Myanmar, Lecture Dr Dagmar Hellmann Rajanayagam of Ke-bangsaan University, Malaysia and Research Officer Daw Win of UHRD, Myanmar presented papers at the session. The afternoon session was presided over by member of Myanma Historical Commission U Thet Tun. Professor Koh Tai Ann of Singapore, Dr Dorothy Guyot of
America and Dr Sunait Chutintaranoud of Thailand presented papers. The conference came to a close with the concluding remarks by Deputy Director-General of UHRD U Thein Hlaing. Over 120 papers were presented at the conference which was attended by over 800 resource persons at home and abroad.
(5) Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation inspects Mingaladon Garden
YANGON, 20 Dec-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected tissue culture and flower
plantations in Mingaladon Garden this morning. The minister inspected tissue culture at the laboratory and Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than and agriculturists reported on the work. The minister and party inspected displays on trees grown by bonsai method, rare local orchids, Myanmar flowers at the flower show to be held soon and souvenirs shop . The minister gave instructions on improvement of tissue culture of orchids, export and arrangement for sale.Minister for Industry-1 attends concluding ceremony of Typing Course No-6, inspects machine parts exhibition
YANGON, 20 Dec - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung today attended the concluding ceremony of the Typing Course NoÊ6 sponsored by the ministry and later inspected the machine parts exhibition. The minister made a speech at the concluding ceremony of the Typing Course No-6 in the training hall of the ministry. He also presented prizes to the outstanding trainees in the six-week course.
He later attended the machine parts exhibition where the parts manufactured by the industries and workshops of the ministry were on display. After hearing reports on production of parts presented by departmental heads and officials, the minister spoke of the need for the six industries and 22 workshops of the ministry to produce more parts and gave suggestions on presenting handsome awards to the personnel and workers who strove for producing parts. Factories and industries of the Ministry of Industry-1 could exceed the production targets during the project tenure from the fiscal 1996-97 to 2000-2001. In addition, production of machine parts promotes the capacity of machines and reduces the expenditure of hard currency.
(6) Minister for Energy inspects oil-wells in Mandalay and Magway
YANGON, 20 Dec-Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi accompanied by officials arrived at Nawarat oil test-well No 2 in Myingyan, Mandalay Division, on 18 December. Chief Engineer (Drilling) U Kyaw Myaing reported on work done, Director (Exploration) of Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise U San Lwin on geophysics of delta region and prospects of the well to the minister who gave instructions and inspected the drilling of test-well No 2.
The Minister and party arrived at Htaukshabin-Kanni oil field in the afternoon and inspected oil well No 211 which produces 90 barrels of crude oil per day. At the briefing hall, General Manager U Myat San reported on production of petroleum and natural gas to the minister who gave necessary instructions and presented K 100,000
to the employees.On 19 December, the Minister together with Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw arrived at North-West Ohntwe test-well No 1 of Exspan Myanmar Co Ltd in Magway Division where they were welcomed by the officials. At the briefing hall, Project Manager Mr Pudjo Suwarno of Exspan Myanmar Co Ltd extended greetings to the Minister and party. Chief Engineer U Sein Thaung reported on drilling the test-well and Geologist U Aung Myo Thaik on prospects to the Minister who gave instructions and inspected the test-well.
Commander attends Shwethingan offering to Maha Wizaya Pagoda
YANGON, 20 Dec-A ceremony to present cash for the sixth Shwethingan offering to Maha Wizaya Pagoda was held at Dhamma Retkhita Dhammayon of the Pagoda this morning, attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than. Also present on the occasion were members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council,
chairmen of District/Township Peace and Development Councils, chairman of Maha Wizaya Pagoda Board of Trustees and members, well-wishers and guests. Chairman of the Pagoda Board of Trustees U Phone Kyaw reported on offering Shwethingan to Maha Wizaya Pagoda.Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than accepted donations K 10.2 million donated by Yangon Division All Private Bus Lines Control Committee and cash donated by well-wishers, and presented certificates of honour to well-wishers. Then, Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, Member Police Col Tin Win and officials accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to wellwishers.
Next, a sermon was delivered by Presiding Sayadaw of the Pagoda Chairman of Dagon Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Bhaddanta Revata, followed by sharing of merits gained. The donations for the Shwethingan offering amounted to K 17.3 million.
(7) Two-lane Ywaleyoegyi Bridge opens
YANGON, 20 Dec-The two-lane Ywaleyoegyi Bridge, an important facility on Pathein-Monywa Highway near
Ngthaing chanung, was commissioned into service this morning.Present were Minister for Construction Maj- Gen Saw Tun, Deputy commander of South-West Command Brig- Gen Tint Swe, Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Myint Thein, officials and local people.
Minister Maj- Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Commander Brig- Gen Tint Swe on behalf of Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, and Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Myint Thein made speeches.
Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Myint Thein and Deputy Commander Brig- Gen Tint Swe formally opened the bridge. The minister and party then inspected the bridge.
Located on Pathein- Monywa Highway near Ngathagchaung, the bridge is 300 feet long and 28 feet wide. Two 3-foot wide pedestrian lanes wee paved on its either side. The two-lane motorway bridge is supported with reinforced concrete piers. Its upper structure is erected with steel frames. It can bear up to 60 tons.

(8) Supreme Court presents stipends to personnel's children
YANGON, 20 Dec-A ceremony to present prizes and stipends to the children of the staff from the Supreme Court and the courts in Yangon Division was held at the meeting hall of supreme Court justices at Supreme Court this morning. It was attended by Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Deputy Chief Justice U Than Oo, Supreme Court Justices U Khin Myint, Dr Tin Aung Aye, U Myint Thein, U Chit Lwin and U Tun Shin, the director-general of Supreme
Court, directors, deputy directors, the head of office, division/district level justices and prize winners. The Chief Justice delivered an opening speech and presented prizes to the winners who got distinctions in the matriculation examination 1999-2000. The Deputy Chief Justice presented prizes to the outstanding children in primary, middle and high school levels. Chairman of Central Staff Welfare Committee Supreme Court Justice U Khin Myint presented stipends to the students.Mindhamma Hill teeming with devotees
YANGON, 20 Dec-The Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept, was teeming with members of the Sangha, nuns and devotees from various places today. The generous donations by the public have amounted to over one hundred million kyats. Staff of Building Project Special Group-
2 of Public Works continued to construct Gandakuti yaungdawgyi, northern and southern stairways and retaining walls at the Hill. Stone sculptor U Taw Taw and sons were making finishing touches of the Image from 7 am to evening. Myanmar handicraft technician U Ohn Tin and group were also making decoration work of Gandakuti
Kyaungdaw and two stairways. Members of the Work Inspection Committee of All-round Construction of the Hill inspected progress of the decoration work. Donations for the project up to date have amounted to K 114,626,129.
(9) Academy Awards to be presented
YANGON, 20 Dec-It was been announced that ceremony to present Myanma Motion Picture Academy Awards will be held at Thuwunna Indoor Stadium-1 in Thingangyun Township, at 5 p.m. on 28 December ( Thursday).
10 TadaU NLD members resign of own accord
Yangon, 20 Dec-Ten members resigned from the National League for Democracy of TadaU Township, Mandalay Division. Ten members of TadaU Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to TadaU Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 17 November 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
