Myanmar has always paid special attention to flourishing of its literature  Conference on Views and  Visions in the Literary Heritage of SEA opens

YANGON, 18 Dec- A ceremony to open the Conference on Views and Visions in the Literary Heritage of  Southeast Asia, organized by the Universities' Historical Research Department of the Ministry of  Education, was held at the  International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, attended by  Chairman  of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, the Chairman of Civil Service  Selection and Training  Board, deputy ministers, the director-general of the  State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads,  directors-general, deputy directors-general and rectors of departments and
universities under the Ministry of Education, members of Myanma Historical  Commission, diplomats of  foreign missions, resident representatives of UNDP  and UNESCO, resource persons from Australia, Bangladesh, China, France,  Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, US,  Britain  and Vietnam and researchers of the Universities' Historical Research  Department.

First, Chairman of the Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an  opening address.

He extended  a most cordial  welcome to all the participants to the Conference on Views and Visions in  the Literary Heritage of Southeast Asia. And went onto say " We are indeed honoured by the presence of so many distinguished and well  known scholars from the region as well as from other parts of the world. Our  Southeast Asia region is rich in culture and  civilization and our literary  traditions are a source of pride to our peoples. Unfortunately, the literary  heritage of the region remains rather isolated and unknown even among the peoples of the region. It is
our hope that the present Conference will serve  to heighten the awareness of treasure trove of literary  heritage that the
region is endowed with. As a nation with a rich history of literature, Myanmar is indeed proud to have the pleasure of hosting this Conference. Throughout our history, Myanmar has always paid special attention to the  flourishing of its literature. It is our belief that our literature has helped consolidate our national  character, our outlook as well as our  traditions, culture and customs.

We believe that our literary tradition, together with the other parts of our  cultural heritage, contributes to  the establishment of our identity. A review of the historical heritage of Myanmar literature will reveal that the written  words have had a long history in Myanmar, and throughout the centuries a rich  literary  tradition has been built up. It is a tradition of great diversity, embracing the literature of the court as well as the literature of the monastery and the village. There is the literature of the intellect as well  as the literature of the imagination and the literature of factual record.  Although times have changed and are changing still more, we fell that this  literary tradition is very much a part of our lives.

As such, the Government of the Union of Myanmar undertakes conscientious  steps for the flourishing of  literature in the country. Every year, in the Myanmar month of Nadaw, we celebrate Sarsoday Day, honouring our writers. The National Literary Awards are presented, and younger writers pay their respect  and reverence to their elders. This cherished tradition reflects the high  regard given to writers and to literary works in Myanmar. Whoever, there is much in our literary tradition that still needs to be studied and  interpreted. There is also a need to make others know and understand our  literary tradition. We have, in Southeast Asia, many shared values and traditions, and as we come closer together as a
regional entity, there is a need also to develop a greater sense of regional identity based on those  values and traditions. It must be admitted that there has not been much knowledge and  understanding among ourselves.

Many of the people in literary circles know more about English and European  authors than about their  own Southeast Asian counterparts. Perhaps that blame can be put on a colonial history which has divided us, but we need to go beyond that blame and try for a remedy. Translations would be a helpful to some of  the works of our contemporary writers have been translated and as a consequence they have won literary acclaim and received international literary awards. I am confident that through exchange of views and  discussions, ways and means will be found to further enhance the knowledge of  the literature of the region. The present Conference will not only provide a good forum for scholars from Southeast  Asia region to present the literary heritage of their countries but will also allow the scholars outside the  region to discuss the various aspects of the literary traditions of Southeast Asia.

These deliberations will surely bring about a better understanding of these  traditions as well as a  realization that while these traditions serve to shape our separate identities they also emphasize our
common humanity. In conclusion, may I wish the Conference every success and to those  distinguished  participants who have come from abroad, a most pleasant stay in Myanmar and an opportunity to enjoy some of our cultural traditions. Then, Director-General Daw Ni Ni Myint of Universities' Historical Research  Department extended greetings and the opening ceremony came to a close.
