(1) Vice-Chairman of State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye meets Lao  Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence General Choummaly Sayasone

YANGON, 7 Dec - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Lao People's Democratic  Republic Gen. Choummaly Sayasone and Chief of Staff of Lao People's Army Maj-Gen Douangchay  Fiche paid a courtesy call on Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union  of Myanmar General Maung Aye, who was on a goodwill visit to Lao PDR, at Ho Ham Presidential  Palace at 2.20 p.m. on 4 December.

Present together with General Maung Aye were member of the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein,  Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Chief of Office of Strategic Studies Deputy Director of  Defence Services Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Myanmar Ambassador to Lao PDR U Sein Win  Aung, Military Attaché Col. Maung Cho, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council  Office Lt.-Col. Pe Nyein and departmental heads.

Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt.-Gen. Win Myint, who accompanied  General Maung Aye, called on MR Thongsing Thammavong, Standing Member of the Lao People's  Revolutionary Party Central Committee Politburo, in charge of Mass Organization, MR Bounden  Button-Von, Secretary of Lao People's Revolutionary Youth Central Committee, at LPRP  Headquarters at 2.30 p.m.

They cordially discussed further strengthening of relations between the two nations, cementing of love  and friendship between youths of the two nations, exchanging of study delegations and promotion of  mutual cooperation. The next morning, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and Myanmar  goodwill delegation arrived at That Lung Nee Temple in Vientiane where four bronze Buddha images  presented by Myanmar are being placed. They were welcomed by Vientiane Vice-Mayor and members  of the Pagoda Board of Trustees. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party paid  homage to Buddha images.

They then paid respects to members of the Sangha led by the Sangha Raja of Laos. Afterwards, they  paid obeisance to the ancient That Luang Stupa. General Maung Aye signed in the visitors' book and  donated cash to the pagoda. Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of  Laos Mr. Somsavat Lengsavat, Ambassador of Laos to Myanmar Mr. Ly Bounkham and Ambassador  of Myanmar to Laos U Sein Win Aung and wife, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and  party left Vientiane by air for Luang Prabang.
 
On arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport, they were welcomed by Governor of Luang Prabang  Province Mr. Chansi Phosikham and Madame and party. Together with Mr. Chansi Phosikham and  Madame, the Myanmar delegation visited Kuangsi Falls which is 30 kilometres from the city. They  studied environmental conservation at the Falls.

General Maung Aye and delegation then visited the National Museum in Luang Prabang. During their  visit to Xieng Thong Temple, they paid obeisance to Buddha images and presented offertories to the  monks.

Mr. Chansi Phosikham and Madame paid a courtesy called on General Maung Aye and Daw Mya Mya  San at Phouvao Hotel. Also present were Secretary-3 Lt.-Gen. Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo,  Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife Daw San Yon, Ambassador U Sein Win Aung and  wife Daw Htwe Yi and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet. General Maung  Aye and Governor of Luang Prabang Province Mr. Chansy Pho-sikham exchanged greetings. The  Governor of Luang Prabang Province and wife and General Maung Aye and wife also exchanged gifts.  General Maung Aye and wife attended " Baci "ceremony at the Phouvao Hotel. At night, General Maung  Aye and wife and party attended dinner given in their honour by the Governor and wife at the Phouvao  Hotel.

During and after the dinner, traditional cultural dances were presented. Then, General Maung Aye and  wife presented gifts to artistes. The Myanmar goodwill delegation spent the night in Luang Prabang.  General Maung Aye and wife and party, accompanied by Governor Chansy Phosikham and wife, visited  Wat Visun Temple at 8.40 am on 6 December. General Maung Aye and wife and party paid homage to  Mak Mo Pagoda and Wat Visun Buddha Image.

Afterwards, General Maung Aye and wife and the Secretary-3 and wife offered alms to Venerable  Kham-mankmani Vongso and members of the Sangha. Next, the General and wife and party paid  homage to ancient Buddha Images. The Myanmar goodwill delegation, together with the Governor and  wife, posed for photos. After that, the General and wife and party went to Thit Pheng Mani Phone  Silvershop, and observed the art of making silver articles. Later, the General and wife and party visited  Ban Phanom Handicraft Weaving Centre, and observed traditional articles of clothing. The General and  wife and party arrived at Luang Prabang International Airport at 10.20 am to leave for Vientiane. They  were seen off at the airport by the Governor of Luang Prabang Province and heads of department.

The Myanmar goodwill delegation arrived back at Vientiane by special aircraft. The General and wife  and party went to the residence of Myanmar Ambassador to Lao PDR at 12.20 p.m. They were  welcomed by Myanmar Ambassador to Lao PDR U Sein Win Aung and wife, Military Attaché Col.  Maung Cho, the staff of the embassy and office of the military attaches office. The staff paid respects to  the General and wife in accord with the Buddhist traditions. In meeting with the staff of the embassy and  office of the military attach and families, the General urged them to live up to diplomatic codes of  conduct, to keep track of development of the nation and to strive to further strengthen ties of friendship  between the two nations.

The General also elaborated on the achieving of favourable conditions as a result of cooperation  between the government and the people, reclamation of fallow and virgin lands in a bid to boost  production of crops, installation of modern pedagogic aids to upgrade the education system up to  international level in accord with the changing patterns of the world and the need to keep pace with  scientific development and high technology.

General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San presented gifts to the staff of the embassy and the  military attachés office. Afterwards, General Maung Aye and wife, and party had lunch together with the  families of the staff of the embassy and the military attachés office. The next proceeded to the Ho Kham  Presidential Residence. The agreement-signing ceremony between the Government of the Union of  Myanmar and the Lao People's Democratic Republic took place at the Ho Kham Presidential Palace at  2.15 p.m.

Present on the occasion were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General  Maung Aye, Secretary-3 Lt.-Gen. Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein,  ministers, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies Deputy Director of Defence Services  Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, the Myanmar Ambassador to Laos and departmental heads from  Myanmar side and President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR Mr. Samane Vignaket, Deputy  Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Somsavat Lengsavad, ministers and high-ranking  officials from Lao side. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone of Myanmar and Minister of  Commerce and Tourism Mr. Phouni Thibphavone signed the Protocol between the Government of the  Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Government of the Union of Myanmar on Border Trade  between the two countries and exchanged the documents.

President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR Mr. Samane Vignaket and wife called on  Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya  Mya San at the Ho Kham Presidential Pa-lace at 2.30 p.m. and bid farewell. Accompanied by Deputy  Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Somsavat Lengsavad and Ambassador of Laos to  Myanmar Mr. Ly Bounkham, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party arrived at  Wattay International Airport, Vientiane, at 2.55 p.m. local time for departure.

They were seen off at the airport by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr.  Somsavat Lengsavad and ministers, high-ranking officials, Ambassador of Laos to Myanmar Mr. Ly  Bounkham, Ambassador of Myanmar to Laos U Sein Win Aung, Military Attaché Col. Maung Cho, staff  of the embassy and the military attachés office. They left Vientiane by special flight and arrived back in  Yangon in the evening.

On 4 December, the ministers accompanying General Maung Aye on the official goodwill visit to Laos  called on their counterparts and had discussions. Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt  Tin and Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone called on Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Mr. Siane  Saphangthong. Discussions focused on providing of assistance in building dams and reservoirs,  establishment of forest plantations and distribution of strains of crops. Minister for Transport Maj-Gen  Hla Myint Swe called on Minister of Communication, Transport, Post and Construction Mr. Phao  Bounnaphonh.

They discussed construction of jetties and ports along Mekong River on Lao-Myanmar border, opening  of toll gates, waterway safety, extending Vientiane-Tachilek-Kengtung-Mandalay flight, and introducing  Mandalay-Luang Prabang flight. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen. Pyi Sone called on Minister of Trade  and Tourism Mr. Phoumy Thip-phavone. Cordial discussions covered opening of border trade gates,  exchange of visits of the chambers of commerce for investment, opening of Myanmar Department Store  in Vientiane, and greater cooperation in tourism industry, among others. Minister for Religious Affairs U  Aung Khin called on Acting Chairman of the Lao Front for National Construction Mr. Siho Bannavong.

They cordially discussed tasks for flourishing of Theravada Buddhism. Minister for Home Affairs Col. Tin  Hlaing called on Minister of Home Affairs Mr Asang Laoly. They exchanged views on strengthening of  friendly relations and development of the peoples residing near the border areas, combating narcotic  drugs and bilateral cooperation.


(2) Secretary-2 inspects Thanmyanthu Dental Clinics in Pazundaung, Pabedan

YANGON, 7 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt.-Gen. Tin Oo this  afternoon inspected the dental clinics run by Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise in Pazundaung and  Pabedan Townships.

He arrived at the Dental Clinic on Bogyoke Aung San Street in Pazundaung Township at 2 p.m. and was  welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Forestry Col. Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Health Professor  Dr Mya Oo, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen. Maung Nyo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen.  Mya Thein Han and officials.

He inspected the services of the Dental Clinic. U Soe Tint, officer in charge of the Dental Clinic,  explained the tasks, the aims of opening the clinic with the arrangements of Thanmyanthu Economic  Enterprise, treatment, and plans to open such dental clinics in states and divisions.

Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo also explained the arrangements and plans to provide dental care  at reasonable treatment fees in both the government and private sectors. Director of Resettlements  Brig-Gen. Aung Thein spoke of opening of Thanmyanthu Dental Clinic.

The Secretary-2 gave suggestions on the plans and services. He proceeded to Than-myanthu Dental  Clinic on Shwebontha Street, Pabedan Township, and inspected its services. Thanmyanthu Dental  Clinics with experienced dental surgeons and modern equipment are opened to provide dental care to  the public at reasonable treatment fees. The clinics are aimed at enabling dental surgeons and dentists to  use modern equipment and practise modern dental surgical methods. More of such clinics are scheduled  to be opened in various places.

Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise intends to use the profit from the clinic in community welfare services,  and introduce mobile dental clinic to provide treatment at small towns and villages. Six such clinics have  been opened in Yangon and Mandalay. Arrangements are under way to open more in states and  divisions.


(3)  Minister meets Chinese Buddhist mission

YANGON, 7 Nov-Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin met the Buddhist mission of the People's  Republic of China led by Mr Daw Shuren at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon. Also  present at the call were Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko,  Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, Pro-Rector (Admin) of International  Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe and officials of departments under the Ministry.  The mission visited the University and the Tooth Relic Pagoda this morning.

Health Minister receives French guest

YANGON, 7 Dec-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received Chairman of Association Medicle  Franco Asiatic Professor Alan Patel at his office on Pyidaungzu Yeiktha Road, Dagon Township, this  afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and  officials.

Deputy Minister for I&P meets Ambassador of Bangladesh

YANGON, 7 Dec-Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung met Ambassador of  Bangladesh to Myanmar Mr Ahmed Rahim at his office at 10 am today. Also present at the call were  Director-General of the Immigration and National Registration Department Col Maung Htay, Deputy  Director-General U Zaw Tun and officials.


(4) Executives of Myanmar-Japan Goodwill Association

YANGON, Dec 7-A ceremony to elect executives of Myanmar-Japan Friendship Association was held at  the Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel at 4.30 p.m. today, with an address by Acting President of the  Association Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing. Col Tin Hlaing as President, Dr Daw Khin Win  Shwe, Dr Daw May May Yee, Dr Daw Mya Mya Win and Dr U Khin Shwe as Vice-Presidents, U Ye  Htut as general secretary and executives totalling 31 were elected. Then, the ceremony came to an end.

Vice-President of UMFCCI leaves for PRC

YANGON, 7 Dec-Vice-President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and  Industry U Htein Win and Executives Dr Maung Maung Lay and U Myint Soe left here for the People's  Republic of China by air this morning to attend the Meeting of Establishing a Joint Committee of  Chambers of Commerce of Economic Quadrangle to be held in Kunming, PRC. They were seen off at  Yangon International Airport by the executives of the federation and officials.


(5) Minister inspects factories of Industry-2

YANGON, 7 Dec- Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, accompanied by Deputy Minister Lt-Col  Khin Maung Kyaw and officials, arrived at Agricultural Equipment Factory No 1 (Sinde) of Myanma  Agricultural Machinery Industries in Padaung Township on 5 December afternoon. The minister and  party inspected agricultural equipment of the factory, production of the agricultural equipment and vehicle  equipment at the factory. The next morning, the minister and party also inspected various kinds of pumps  invented by Agricultural Equipment Factory No 1 (Sinde).

Factory Manager U Kyaw Kyaw explained facts about the production, sales and capacity of pumps to  the minister who gave instructions. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and party went to Machine and  Machine Tool Factory No 1 (Nyaungchaydauk) at 10.30 am. Factory Manager U Pe Than Hlaing  explained the import of machinery from People's Republic of China, installation of machinery and running  of the factory.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin inspected testing of machinery and arrangements for production of  motor and agricultural equipment at the workshop, installation of machinery at the Copper Rod Casting  & Rolling workshop, production of copper cable in Vertical Enameling workshop, construction of  power Cable Production workshop and production of PVC cables in Power Cable Production  workshop. The minister gave instructions to officials.

University of Culture welcomes freshers with French music troupe

YANGON, 7 Dec - A fresher-welcoming ceremony for the 2000-2001 academic year of the University of  Culture (Yangon) was held at the town hall in Dagon Myothit (South) Township at 10 am today. Rector  of the university U Tin Soe, Pro-Rectors Daw Khin Hla Htay and U Myat Thura extended greetings to  the fresher. The rector, the pro-rectors, professors and department heads presented gifts to the students  who won the best library study award, gold, silver and bronze medals and special prizes at the Eighth  Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions and medals at boat races and staff who  won good public service awards. The special guests at the ceremony were members of ARS Antiqua de  Paris, a vi-siting music troupe from France. The French music troupe performed song and dance  programmes after the prize distribution ceremony. Also present on the occasion were professors,  associate professors,  department heads, the registrar grade-1, lecturers, assistant lecturers, the faculty  and students.


(6) Deputy Minister on inspection in Kachin State

YANGON, 7 Dec-Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, together with officials,  met with members of Kachin State Union Solidarity and Development Association and Kachin State  War Veteran Association at the Town Hall in Myitkyina on 4 December.

In the evening, the deputy minister met with departmental heads of forces and departments under the  ministry, staff and their families at the office of Myitkyina Township Peace and Development Council.  The minister gave instructions on departmental work and agriculture and livestock breeding work.  The deputy minister inspected No 2 Police Station in the township. The deputy minister yesterday met  with departmental officials at Gubar Guest House, Machambaw Township, Putao District, and gave  instructions and inspected plantations of departments under the ministry. Then, the deputy minister  inspected Putao Police Station and left instructions.

Deputy Minister for Education attends prize-presenting ceremony

YANGON, 7 Dec-A ceremony to present prizes to the winners of Yangon Division Third Basic Education  Schools Fife and Drum Band Contest was held at Salin Sports Ground in Kyimyindine Township this  morning, attended by Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung.

Also present on the occasion were directors- general, chairmen, Deputy Director-General of No 3 Basic  Education Department (Yangon) U Tin Win and departmental officials, township education officers,  principals, teachers and students.

The participating troupes took designated positions on the ground and the Deputy Minister presented  first prize to No 1 BEHS Hmawby troupe, second to No 2 BEHS Latha troupe and third to No 2  BEHS Sangyoung troupe in A division, and first to No 2 BEHS Hlinethaya troupe, second to No 4  BEHS Ahlon troupe and third to No 2 BEHS Kamayut troupe in B division. Director-General of  Education Planning and Training Department U Bo Win, Director-General of No 1 Basic Education  Department U Tin Nyo and Chairman of Myanmar Education Research Bureau U Myint Han presented  special prizes to the winners of A and B Divisions. Deputy Director-General U Tin Win presented best  maestro awards to No 1 BEHS Hmawby troupe and No 2 BEHS Kamayut troupe leaders and presents  to the members of Scrutinizing Committee.


(7) Prizes presented to winners of Inter-Ministry Taekwondo Tournament

YANGON, 7 Dec-The final matches and prize presentation ceremony of Year 2000 Third Inter-Ministry  Yuzana Cup Taekwondo Tournament were held at Aung San Gymnasium this afternoon. It was  attended by Chairman of Myanma Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint,  Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik, Patron of Myanmar  Women Sports Federation Daw Khin Thein Yee, Chairman U Htay Myint and executives, invited guests  and enthusiasts. After the final matches, Director-General U Thaung Htaik, the patron and officials  presented awards to the winners. The minister presented Yuzana Championship Cup to the Ministry of  Defence team.


(8) National Seed Committee (NSC) meets

YANGON, 7 Dec -The first meeting of National Seed Committee (NSC) of Ministry of Agriculture and  Irrigation was held at Myanma Agriculture Service on Kanbe Street in Yankin Township this morning.  Present were Chairman of National Seed Committee (NSC) Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Secretary of NSC  Managing Director of U Tun Than and committee members, sub-committee members, Vice-Chairman of  Academy for Agriculture, Forestry, Livestock and Fisheries Dr Myint Thein and members, officials of  Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, researchers, technician of Ministry of National Planning and  Economic Development, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science and Technology. Deputy  Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung made a speech. Then, Joint-Secretary of NSC General Manager (Seed  Division) of MAS Dr Min Aung explained the function of NSC. Those present took part in the  discussions. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by Chairman Brig-Gen Khin Maung.


(9) Man sentenced to 30 years' imprisonment

YANGON, 7 Nov-The Yangon East District Court handed down a sentence of 30 years in prison on an  illicit drug trafficker on 20 October this year. The case was that a combined team comprising personnel  of local intelligence unit and Yangon Division Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, on 14 May 1999,  searched the house of Aung Khaing Zaw, No 985, Duya Street, Ward 49, Dagon Myothit (North)  Township, and seized 1.63 kilos of marijuana. The Dagon Myothit (North) Township Police Station filed  Aung Khaing Zaw, 30, son of U Sein Maung, under Section 15/19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and  Psychotropic Substances Law. (See page 2) The Yangon East District Court heard the case and  sentenced him to 25 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and five years' imprisonment under  Section 15 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law separately.

25 members resign from Labutta Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 7 Dec-Twenty-five members resigned of their own accord from the National League for  Democracy of Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division. Twenty-five members of Labutta Township  NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Labutta  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19  March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
