(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to ThailandYANGON, 5 Dec-On the occasion of the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej which falls on 5 December 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King of Thailand and to His Excellency Mr Chuan Leekpai, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand.

YANGON 4 Dec- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing saw off Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander -in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and delegation who will pay an official visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic at the invitation of the President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR Mr Samane vignaket, at Yangon International Airport at 7 am today.
Also present at the airport to see off the delegation were Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, ministers, deputy ministers and senior officers and Charge d'Affaires ai of the Lao PDR Embassy Mr Khamsouay Keodalavong and staff.

(3) Yankin Education College Practising Middle School gets Multimedia teaching centre
YANGON, 4 Dec A ceremony to open three-storey building of Yankin Education College Practising Middle School and multimedia teaching centre was held at the school this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present were the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general of departments and boards, Principal of Yankin Education College, teachers, Headmistress of Practising Middle School, Chairman of School Board of Trustees and students. Headmistress of Practising Middle School Daw Yin Yin Nwe and Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Zaw Myint formally opened the three-storey building and multimedia teaching centres.
Secretary-l formally unveiled the stone plaque of the school and multimedia teaching centre. The Secretary-l and party inspected computer aided teaching room, agricultural room, electronic media (audio system), pre-primary room, computer aided instruction room, printed media, handicraft room, art studio, music room, school health room and language lab. He observed skill demonstration of the students.
Headmistress Daw Yin Yin Nwe and Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Zaw Myint reported on efforts for construction of new school building and multimedia teaching centre. Wellwishers presented K 26,830,000 for new building to the Secretary-l.
Chairman of School Board of Trustees Dr Zaw Myint and Daw Sanda Aung presented K 1,202,000 donated by 12 wellwishers for multimedia teaching centre, old student U Aung Ko Ko Khin K 2,408,500 donated by old students, U Moe Thaw Oo and
Daw Aye Aye Yi K 4,342,590 and Managing Director of Myanmar Tokiwa Corporation Mr Fumiyoshi Sakurai 240 dozens of Tokiwa brand pencils to Minister for Education U Than Aung.
Headmistress Daw Yin Yin Nwe handed over related documents to Director-General of Education Planning and Training Department U Bo Win.
The Secretary-l expressed thanks for harmonious efforts to open the new building and multimedia teaching centres. He said it was encouraging to see enthusiastic students who showed their intelligence with the use of modern teaching aids and skilled teachers for human resource development.
The Secretary-1 and party posed for photo together with teachers, members of the School Board of Trustees and students. The new building is 178 feet long and 30 feet wide and it consists of 15 class room.
Japanese language books for UFLYANGON, 4 Dec-Tokyo Foundation ( Japan) ant Publishers Association for Culture Exchange (PACE) of Japan presented books on Japanese language to the University of Foreign Languages Yangon) this morning.
Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony. Also present were ministers, deputy ministers, directors-general and chairmen of departments and organizations under the ministry Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tusmori and families of the embassy, the rector, professors, students of UFL, Chairman of PACE Mr Takao Watanabe, officials and guests. Mr Takao Watanabe explained the purpose of the donation. He then presented the books to Rector of UFL Dr Soe Win. The Secretary-l-and party viewed the Japanese language books displayed at the university.
(4) Secretary-2 attends 59th gold foil donation ceremony of Padindan Ayontaw Wut-Athin
YANGON 4 Dec-The 59th ceremony to donate gold foils and a set of Tipitaka to the Shwedagon Pagoda by Padindan Ayontaw Wut-Athin was held at Wut-Athin Dammayon this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo .
Also present on the occasion were Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Wut-Athin, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Mai Gen Khin Maung Than, officials , patrons, chairman, executives, members of the Wut-Athin and wellwishers.
First, the congregation received the Nine Precepts from Wut-Athin Ovadacariya Head of Bagaya Taik Swehlaing Pariyatti Sarthintaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Samvarabodhi.
Then, the Secretary-2 and party presented offertories to Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Wut-Athin. The Secretary-2, the Commander and officials accepted gold foils donated to the Shwedagon Pagoda by wellwishers. After the ceremony, officials of Wut- Athin and wellwishers proceeded to Shwedagon Pagoda and donated gold foil to the pagoda. Today's donations were 31 one-foot- square gold plates (93 ticals ) worth K 5.75 million . Padindan Ayontaw Wet- Athin has donated 379 gold foil in 59 ceremonies and Tipitaka treatises for three time to date.
Secretary-2 inspects Course on Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue BoatsYANGON 4 Dec-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo went to Thakayta Wharf of Myanma Five Star Line in Thakayta Township this evening and inspected the Course on Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats there.
Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line U Khin Maung Kyi explained matters related to course aids to Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy ministers and departmental officials.
Then, the Secretary-2 inspected the trainees who were doing the course. The officials also reported to the Secretary-2 and party the condition of giving lectures at Advanced Fire-fighting Training Course. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 viewed the training lessons and left instructions.
(5) Independence Day Flag Hoisting and Saluting Sub-committee meets
YANGON, 4 Dec - The Flag Hoisting and Saluting Sub-committee of the 53rd Anniversary Independence Day held a meeting at Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Office this afternoon with an address by Chairman of the Sub-committee member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.
Also present at the meeting were members of the sub-committee, chairmen of respective working groups, members of NGOs, officials and guests.
Speaking on the occasion, the commander said this is the first meeting of the sub-committee; the work committee and respective sub-committees have been formed and duties assigned to them. As the members of the respective subcommittees have gained experiences year after year, they should discharge their duties systematically; harmonious coordination among the different subcommittees should be made in carrying out their tasks. Based on the previous year's experiences, preparations should be made to hold this year's ceremony on a grander scale. He then invited suggestions from the participants. Chairman and Work Group, Military Parade Work Group, Reception and Accommodation Work Group, Held Work Group, Information Work Group and messing Work Group took part in the discussions. The commander gave suggestions.
Minister for PBANRDA inspects development affairs in NamhkamYANGON, 4 Dec-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung and officials inspected Shweli Suspension Bridge on Namhkam-Bhamo Road yesterday.
The minister and party met service personnel of Township Development Committee and discussed service personnel affairs, paving of road, construction of rural road and water supply. Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun and Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung inspected Myanma Economic Bank and Internal Revenue Department in Namhkam and Immigration and Population Department. The minister and party met Chairman of Namhkam Township Peace and Development Council Captain Tin Win and departmental officials and fulfilled the requirements. The minister and party arrived at Muse in the afternoon.
Animal vaccine production inspected
YANGON, 4 Dec - Chairman of Myanma Fish Breeding and Production Committee Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Chairman of Farming and Feedstuff and Medicine Production and Distribution Sub-committee Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun inspected production of chicken vaccine by Advanced Biological Co Ltd this afternoon.
The. managing director of the company explained manufacturing of medicines for hybridization and vaccines. The company is producing 13 kinds of vaccines. Accompanied by officials, the minister and-party inspected Moonlight chicken farm, feedstuff production, and fowl market.
Minister inspects construction of New Specialist Psychiatric Hospital
YANGON, 4 Dec-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Deputy Minister Prof Dr Kyaw Myint, inspected construction site of New Specialist Psychiatric Hospital in Dagon Myothit (East) Township this morning.
Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing of Asia World Ltd reported to the minister on progress of work. Then, Deputy Minister Prof Dr Kyaw Myint reported on lay-out plan of the hospital. Medical Superintendent Dr Toe Aung reported on settlement of staff and patients at the hospital. Then, the minister inspected Central Midwifery Training School in Toegyaunggale. Director-General of Medical Sciences Department Prof U Maung Maung Wint reported to the minister on training matters. The minister gave instructions and inspected livestock breeding and agricultural tasks in the compound of the school.
(6) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image packed with members of the Sangha, devotees
YANGON, 4 Dec-Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township was packed with members of the Sangha, devotees and members of wut associations today. Engineers and workers of Buildings Construction Project Special Group-2 of Public Works led by Deputy Superintending Engineer U Nyunt Maung San participated in construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi, southern and northern stairways and south-eastern retaining walls.
Stone sculptor U Taw Taw artist Sayagyi U Thaung Han and Myanmar handicraft technician U Ohn Tin supervised the carving of the Image and decoration work daily. U Ohn Tin and party carried out the decoration works of the Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi and two stairways.
Wut associations also recited religious verses from 7 am to 10 p.m. Lesu national races of Shan State (North) donated cash towards the funds of the Image. Patron of the Mindhamma Hill Board of Trustees U Shein Aung, Bo accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to them. Bookshops of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, News and Periodicals Enterprise and Sarpay Beikman sold various kinds of books, encyclopaedia year books (2000) and calendars for 2001.
Donations by the public have amounted to K 106,079,277 from 5 August to date. The fund-raising unit is being kept open on the hill from 7 am to 9 pm daily.
Ninth Buddha Pujaniya of Alodawpyay Pagoda 5-17 DecYANGON, 4 Dec- The Ninth Buddha Pujaniya of Alodawpyay Pagoda will be held on a grand scale in Bagan-NyaungU from 5 to 17 December. On 9 December evening ( 14th Waxing of Nadaw, 1362 ME), Alodawpyay Sayadaw will take part in the ceremony to take a vow at the pagoda. The ceremony to say prayers will be held on 10 December (Fullmoon Day of Nadaw, 1362 ME) morning. After the ceremonies, offertories will be donated to 1,000 members of the Sangha from monasteries in Kyaukpadaung and NyaungU townships.
(7) Minister receives Japanese guests
YANGON, 4 Dec-Minister for Education U Than Aung received Executive Managing Director Mr Teruo Masuda pand arty of Japan international Volunteer Association (JVA), a non-profit organization, at his office this afternoon.
They discussed construction of basic education primary school. Then, the minister received Chairman of Japan Book Publisher Association Mr Takao Watanabe and party, currently here to attend the Japanese Book Show at University of Foreign Languages (Yangon), to be sponsored by Ministry of Education. Tokyo Foundation (Japan) and Publisher Association for Culture Exchange (PACE) (Japan), at his office this afternoon. Also present at the calls were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt and officials of the Ministry of Education.
PRC tourism delegation concludes visit
YANGON, 4 Dec-Vice-Chairman of China National Tourism Administration Mr Sun Gang and members who arrived here under the arrangement to promote tourism services cooperation between Myanmar and China left for home this evening. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and departmental officials and Counsellor Mr Tang Ying and staff of the Chinese Embassy.

(8) Minister attends demonstration of power quality strategy
YANGON, 4 Dec- A ceremony to demonstrate the power quality strategy, sponsored by Libert Far East Pte Ltd and Aung Myanmar Technology Co Ltd, was held at Padamya Hall of Inya Lake Hotel this morning. Present were Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, departmental officials and guests.
Chairman of Aung Myanmar Technology Co Ltd U Kyaw Paing extended greetings. Mr Jim Harrison of Libert Far East Pte Ltd explained about power quality pyramid grounding, bonding, wiring and transient voltage surge suppression (TVSS) and Mr Roger Foo about data wave products with the use of video slides and answered the queries.
Management Committee for Excursion of Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 33 of UDNR meets
YANGON, 4 Dec-The Management Committee for Excursion of Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 33 of the University for development of National Races held a meeting at Pyithu Hluttaw Building this afternoon.
Chairman of the Management Committee member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than addressed the meeting.
Also present were Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence members of the Management Committee, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office directors-general, managing directors and officials of the departments and enterprises and guests. The Commander called on all to arrange the excursion of the trainees with full political essence and encouraged those present to contribute to the discussions . Secretary of the Management Committee Director-General of Civil Service Selection and Training Department U Myint Thein re ported on the tentative programme for the excursion and formation of working groups. Then, a general round of discussions followed. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the, Commander.
(9) 59.604 kilos of marijuana seized in Toungoo
YANGON, 4 Dec-A combined group comprising member of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Saw Pay Ta Yu (a) Saw Peter at 6th-Mile Village, Kyauktaing Village-tract, Toungoo Township, at 2 pm on 9 June.
The group nabbed RK Barmar (a) Tin Win, U Than Win, Ohn Thwin, U Saw Ba Aye, Byasa Muni and Ramma Sarlar with 59.6W kilos of marijuana.
In this regard, Toungoo Police Station No 1 field Saw Pay Ta Yu (a) Saw Peter, 40, son of U Mya Han of 6th-Mile Village, Kyauktaing Villagetract, Toungoo, RK Barmar (a) Tin Win, 38, son of U Ramma Legan Thadugan Village-tract, Phyu, U Than Win, 64, son of U Lwe Si of Kahse Village; Toungoo, Ohn Thwin, 36, son of U Nyi Pu of Mogaung Village-tract, Toungoo, U Saw Ba Aye, 57, son of U Pho Chan of Kyauktaing Village-tract, Byasa Muni, 45, son of U Ramma Lakhan and Ramma Sarlar, 24, son of U Maranthi under the Sections 15/19 (A)/ 21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Law On 1 November, Toungoo District Court sentenced Saw Pay Ta Yu (a) Saw Peter to 30 years' imprisonment under the Section 19 (A), RK Barmar (a) Tin Win, U Than Win, Ohn Thwin, Byasa Muni and Ramma Sarlar 25 years' each under the Section 19 (A), U Saw Ba Aye 25 years' under the Section 19 (A)/21 and 4 years under the Section 15.
24 members resign from Thabaung Township NLD of own accordYANGON, 4 Dec- Twenty-four members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Thabaung Township, Ayeyawady Division. Twenty-four members of Thabaung Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 November 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
