(1) Secretary-1 attends merit sharing ceremony for two-storey building of monastic education school

YANGON, 3 Dec-A ceremony to share merits for the two-storey building of Padauk Shwewah monastic education school and the two-storey building of Padauk Shwewah Sarthintaik, Kyaukyedwin Ward, Mayangon Township, was held at the school this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Lashio Sayadaw Agga Maha Parrdita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Kavindacara, Sayadaw of Padauk Shwewah Sarthintaik Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pavara and members of the Sangha, the ministers, the deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, wellwishers Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Ltd U Aung Ko Win and wife Vice Chairperson Agga Maha Thiri Thudhammatheingi Thiri Thudhammatheingi Thiha Thudhammatheingi Daw Nan Than Htwe and family, lay disciples and invited guests.

The Lashio Sayadaw invested the congregation with the Five Precepts. Members of the Sangha recited the parittas.

The Secretary- I and party and wellwishers presented provisions to members of the Sangha. Then, U Aung Ko Win Daw Nan Than Htwe and family presented K 35 million for the expenses of two-storey buildings through the Secretary- 1

Afterwards, the Lashio Sayadaw delivered a sermon, and the Secretary-l and party and wellwishers shared merits gained. The Secretary- 1 performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony. Secretary-l and party and wellwishers offered 'soon' to members of the Sangha.

Secretary-l and party viewed the two-storey concrete building of Padauk Shwewah monastic education school. The building with six classrooms is 100 feet in length and 29 feet in width. The two-storey concrete building of Padauk Shwewah Sarthintaik is 70 feet in length and 30 feet in width. The buildings cost K 35 million.

Altogether 787 school boys and girls including 120 Shan, Pa-O, Rakhine, Kayin, Kayah and Palaung nationals are attending the school. Later, the Secretary-l inspected construction of a twostorey building for nuns of Dhammathaka Sarthintaik, Ward 5, Mayangon, gave, instructions to responsible persons and left the construction site.


(2) Nyaunghnapinkwin Vegetable, Poultry Farming Special Zone 1 in full swing on 1,380 acres

YANGON, 3 Dec -Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo today inspected cultivation and production of vegetables, poultry farming special zone and construction of Htaukkyant Kyain-Ngahsudaun g Road. Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and officials, the Secretary-2 arrived at the tax-free market in Hsatthadaw Sanpya Village on Yangon-Pyay Highway.

The market sells fresh vegetables produced by Nyaunghnapinkwin Vegetable and Poultry Farming special Zone 1 of Hmawby Township at. reasonable wholesale and retail prices, among other kitchen items. The vegetables of the farm are also on sale on Yangon-Bago Highway, at the corner of No 3 Highway, at wholesale and retail prices.

The Secretary-2 and party proceeded to the Vegetable Farm and Poultry Farming Special Zone 1 of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council in Nyaunghnapinkwin Village, Hmawby Township. Viewing the plantations of the farm from the tower, the Secretary-2 and party heard reports on cultivation of various vegetables presented by officials. Later at the vegetable farm supervision office, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than explained to the Secretary-2 the establishment of the special zone starting from 16 May this year, location, area and functions of the special zone divided into three smaller zones, transport from the special zone to Yangon and other places, reclamation of land and allocation of plots in the Special Zone 1, construction of access roads, water and power supply, farms of entrepreneurs and ministries cultivating various vegetables on 1,380 acres, sales of the farm's vegetables at the tax free markets in Yangon, Hsatthadaw Sanpya Village tax-free market, and at market place on Yangon-Bago Highway, at the corner of No 3 Highway, and arrangements being made for exporting them, and tasks. of the supervisory committee and subcommittees for the success of agriculture and livestock breeding work.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected land preparation and allotment of plots for Special Zone 1, preparations being made to establish agriculture farm's, and cultivation of vegetables. They next toured the OK Agriculture Centre working on 20 acres, and the farms of Myanma Agriculture Service and the Minis- try of Energy.

The Ministry of Energy has got the permit to cultivate and produce vegetables and establish poultry farms on 60 acres of the Special Zone 1. The Secretary-2 and party later inspected the farms of the Ministry of Home Affairs where Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung briefed them on cultivation of vegetables on 105 acres. Nyaunghnapinkwin Vegetable and Poultry Farming Special Zone under the supervision of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council extends 9,018 acres. The main special zone is divided into three smaller special zones, and the Special Zone 1 is 3,089 acres, on which vegetables have been grown on 1,380 acres.

The Special Zone 1 targets to cultivate vegetables fully on 1,380 acres this cold season. Arrangements are under way to fully establish the two other special zones. The Secretary-2 and party later inspected Htaukkyant-Kyain- Ngahsudaung Road being built by the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. At Kalihtaw Creek Bridge construction site, Deputy Minister for PBANRDA U Kyaw Tin reported on progress of work. After inspecting the construction work along the road, the Secretary-2 left instructions.


(3) Thayetkon BEPS No 1 gets new building

YANGON, 3 Dec-A ceremony to hand over a new building of Thayetkon Basic Education Primary School No I to the Ministry of Education was held at Thayetkon Village in Hmawby Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and L)development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, .deputy ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments, departmental officials of Yangon North District and Hmawby Township, Headmistress of Thayetkon BEPS No I Daw Aye Hlaing and staff, students, the school building donor and family, town elders and guests.

Township Education Officer U Ohn Tin and school building donor U Thein Myint formally opened the new school building. Afterwards, a ceremony to mark the opening of the new school building was held at the new building.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said that wellwishers are providing as much assistance as they can for the education promotion programmes of the State.

At a time when school boards of trustees, wellwishers and students are cooperating in striving for the development of the education sector, the donation of a new school building not only benefits one generation after another but contributes to the implementation of the education promotion programmes of the State. Donor U Thein Myint spoke of the purpose of donating the new school building. Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung explained matters related to implementation of the education promotion programmes.

Donor U Thein Myint and wife Daw Kyi Nyunt handed over documents pertaining to the new school building, to Deputy Director of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) U Tin Win.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted donations to the funds of the school. Then, the Secretary-2 spoke of progress of work. The secretary-2 called on all to maintain the school . The new school building, 54 feet long and 27 feet wide  is build of bricks and roof is made of sheets of corrugated iron.


(4) Ambassador U Tin Soe accredited to Ukraine

YANGON, 4 Dec-The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Tin Soe, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Russian Federation, concurrently as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of Ukraine.

Pre-conference of Myanmar War Veteran Organization (Mon State) held

YANGON, 3 Dec- The Pre-conference of Myanmar War Veteran Organization (Mon State) was held at the Mon State Hall in Mawlamyine this morning, attended by Patron of Mon State WVO Commander of South-East

Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung. Also present on the occasion were members of MWVO Central Organizing Committee Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Department Col Win Maung (Retd),

Committee of Mon State and District WVOs, departmental officials of Mon State, guests and town elders. Capt Soe Paing (Retd)(Navy) presided over the Pre-conference and Cmdr Aung Khin Kyaw (Retd) (Navy) and Lt-Col Aung Myaing (Retd) were co-chairmen. Daw Wah Wah Khaing and Daw Thida Aung Myint acted as master of ceremonies and joint master of ceremonies respectively. Altogether 442 delegates or 100 per cent attended the Pre-conference . Then, Pre-conference chairman Col. So Paing (Retd) give and opening address . Then, he gave the concluding remarks and the Pre-conference successfully ended with chanting the slogans in the afternoon . Then, the donation ceremony was held . Today 's donation K 1 million.


(5) National Workshop on Participatory Forest Management held

YANGON, 3 Dec-The National Workshop on Participatory Forest Management: Implications for Policy and Human Resource Development in the mountain areas in Myanmar jointly sponsored by the Forest Department and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) was held at Forest Research institute in Yezin Pyinmana, yesterday.

Present were Deputy Director-General of forest Department U Shwe Kyaw , Rector of the Institute of Forestry U Aung Than Advisers to the Ministry of Forestry, directors of FD, officials of Arid Zone Greening Department, heads of State and Division FDs commanding officers of local battalions, Regional Coordinator Mt Anupan Bhatia of ICIMOD, delegates' from India., Nepal and China 'representatives of National Commission for Environmental Affairs, MIRDA, UNDP, Local NGOs, and user groups of community-forestry, guests and participants from States and Divisions.  Deputy Director General of Forest Department U Shwe Kyaw- delivered an opening address. Regional Coordinator Mr Anupan Bhatia of IClMOD made introductory remarks.

The workshop will focus on the high level of collaboration in the region and strengthening of current local efforts in community based forest management in the mountain areas of Myanmar. It will also highlight and seek solutions to the need for capacity buildings for the department staff and local communities in terms of formal education and training. The workshop continues tomorrow.


(6) Myanmar delegation arrives back

YANGON, 3 Dec- A Myanmar delegation led by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung arrived back here by air this morning after attending the Asian region peace and stability informal meeting of retired ministers of defence from 12 Asian nations in Tokyo, Japan.
The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon Inter national Airport by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Director-General U Soe Tint of Government's Office and officials and families of the delegation. Member of the delegation Lt-Co Sithu of the Ministry of Defence also arrived back on the same flight.

International Day of Disabled Persons observed

YANGON, 3 Dec-The International Day of Disabled Persons was observed at the International Business Centre this morning with an address by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, heads of department, members of the committee for observing the Day, officials of social organizations, resident representatives of UN agencies, principals and teachers of training schools under the ministry, trainees, wellwishers and guests. Daw San Yu Yu Ohn of IBC acted as master of ceremonies.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa said that today is designated as the International Day of Disabled Persons by UN with the aim of uplifting the dignity and moral of the disabled of the world.  The 48th UN General Assembly has designated 3 December as the International Day of Disabled Persons for the dignity of the disabled of the world.

In 1994, Myanmar began to observe the International Day of Disabled Persons annually. The Ministry of SWRR is implementing rehabilitation projects as a major work after laying down plans. This is to enable the disabled to take part in building a new modern developed nation.

The main objective of rehabilitation work is to enable the disabled to fit in well with others in society. The State is carrying out tasks of setting up training schools for all disabled,  visually handicapped, deaf, physically handicapped, mentally retarded, for merging them well with others in society. The Health Department is opening rehabilitation centres for the disabled. Ministry of Defence is caring the disabled by opening Defence Services Physical Rehabilitation Hospital. Myanmar Disabled Sports Federation is also nurturing many outstanding athletes who bring honour to the nation.

The disabled have a chance to have access to education at ordinary schools under the mixed education programme jointly implemented by Ministry of Education and Ministry of SWRR. The skill contests were held at respective training schools from 27 to 30 November to mark the Day. Prizes will be awarded to the outstanding trainees at this ceremony, he said. Afterwards, the minister presented an honorary prize to Dr Aye Ko of Maths Department, Yangon University. Later, the minister presented prizes to Maung Lin Htet Paing and Ma Shwe Zin Myat of the Training School for young disabled persons, Maung Tun Tun Naing and Cpl Tin Maung Lan of the disabled training school for adults. Member of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Vice Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented prizes to Maung Aung Naing Tun and Ma Kwe Nan of Khawegyan School for the Blind. Adviser to Education Group of MNWCWA Daw Khin Than Nwe to Maung Thet Oo and Maung Sein Hla Maung of Kyemyindine School for the Blind, Patron of Yangon Division MNWCWA Daw Marlar ,into Ma Kaung Ywe Aung and Maung Sit Zaw Naing, member of MNWCWA Daw Tin Aye to Ma Hnin Swe Yi and Ma Su May Win of Mandalay School for the Deaf and Vice-Chairperson Professor Dr Daw May May Yi of MNWCWA to Maung Saw Man Dae and Ma Shelly San of Mary Chapman School for Deaf and Dumb.

Afterwards, Chairman of Working Committee for Observing the Day Director-General of Social Welfare Department U Sit Myaing handed over cash donated by the Work Committee, to the principals of Training Schools under the ministry. Then, cash donations were made for the Day.  Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein and Brig-Gen Maung Nyo accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the wellwishers.

'The disabled children entertained the audience with Myanmar cultural songs and dances. The minister presented honorary prizes to them before the ceremony came to a close.


(7) Minister inspects construction of bridges in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 3 Dec-Minister or Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials inspected road sections of Yangon-Nyaungdon-Bo Myat Tun Bridge,  Kyaunggon Kangalay, Kazan-Takway and Nyaungdon-Yaykyi-Athoke yesterday. The minister gave instruction on road repair, use of machinery and supervision by officials concerned. The minister inspected Kangalay-Athoke-Yaykyi-Ngathainggyaung road, a section of Pathein-Monywa Road. He also inspected Ywale Yoegyi Bridge near Ngathainggyoung on Pathein-Monywa Road. The bridge will be open soon.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Myint of Special Bridge Construction Group-13 reported on preparations for the opening ceremony. The two-lane reinforced concrete Ywale Yoegyi Bridge will be 300 feet long and 18 feet high and its clearance will be 50 feet. The minister inspected construction of Bear-in Bridge. The two bridges are main links on Gwa-Ngathainggyaung Road. The minister also inspected Ngathainggyaung-Yaykyi-Kyonpyaw-Danubyu-Sekkawt Road section.

Vice-Chairman of CNTA visits Pagodas in Bago

YANGON 3 Dec-Vice-Chairman of China National Tourism Administration Mr Sun Gang and party together with officials of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism visited Shwemawdaw Pagoda and Shwethalyaung Buddha Image in Bago this morning

They also visited the site of rebuilding Kanbawzathadi Palace. - In the afternoon, they left Bago and arrived back here.

Thai Exhibition 2000 concludes

YANGON 3 Dec- Under the economic cooperation programmes of Myanmar and Thailand Thai' Exhibition 2000 sponsored by the Thai Department of Export Promotion with be permission of the Ministry of Commerce, concluded at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre this evening.

The exhibition was held from 30 November to 3 December At the exhibition, 144 companies opened l 66 booths and sold auto parts chemicals things for children construction materials, cosmetics, electrical appliances textile and domestic appliances The exhibition was the third of its kind.


(8) Eminent Writer Saw Mon Nyin honoured

YANGON, 3 Dec- The Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs' Association honoured writer Saw Mon Nyin (Daw Yin Yin) who received SEA Write Award in Bangkok, Thailand, at the office of the association in Dagon Township this morning.

Present were Chairperson of the association Daw Sein Sein, Vice-Chairperson Daw Thet Yi, Secretary Daw Nu Nu Yi, executives and members. Chairperson Daw Sein, Sein extended greetings. Then. Secretary Daw Nu Nu Yi read out the biography of the writer. Afterwards, writer- Saw Mon Nyin recounted her experience on the prize presentation for SEA Write Award. Next, Chairperson Daw Sein Sein, Vice-Chairperson Daw Thet Yi and number's, presented gifts to writer Saw Mon Nyin. Later, Adviser to the association Professor Daw Khin Aye Win gave the lecture one prevention of Violence Against Women.

Market ship on Ygn-Mdy route

YANGON, 3 Dec-The Inland Water Transport runs Mya Thida market ship on Yangon-Mandalay waterway to enable local people along the route to buy the products of lower and upper Myanmar at reasonable prices under the supervision of the Ministry of Transport and guidance given by the Head of State. Mya Thida left Yangon on 17 November. It stopped over in Maubin, Danubyu, Zalon, Minhla, Shwekyin, Myanaung, Kyeethe, Pyay and Kamma and sold goods there.

Before departure on 17 November Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint inspected the market ship and spoke words of encouragement to the shopkeepers. On 23 November evening, local authorities, departmental personnel and local people of Kyeethe Village went shopping on board the Mya Thida.

On 25 November evening, Mya Thida docked in Pyay. Managing Director U Tun Aung Myint of IWT and party inspected the ship and attended to the requirements of the shops. On 25 November, officials of Kamma Township and local people warmly welcomed two market ships Mya Thida (going upstream) and Mya Sanda (going downstream) which docked at the jetty in Kamma of Magway Division. Sales of goods amounted to K 50,000 in Maubin, K 45,000 in Danubyu, K 250,000 in Zalun, K 50,000 in-Hinthada, K 90,000 in Shwekyin, K 100,000 in Myanaung, K 370,000 in Kyeethe, K 120,000 in Pyay and K 235,500 in Kamma.


(9) 27 members resign from Ngazun Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 3 Dec-Twenty-seven members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Mandalay Division. Twenty-seven members of Ngazun Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 24 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
