(3) Thailand Exhibition 2000 commences

YANGON, 30 Nov - The Thailand Exhibition 2000, organized by the Department of Export Promotion under the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand with the permission of the Ministry of Commerce of Myanmar, was opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Centre on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this morning. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the opening ceremony.

Also present were ministers, the Chief of Staff (Navy), the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, Deputy Minister of Commerce of Thailand Mr Phaithoon Kaeothong and party, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned, ambassadors and military attaches of foreign embassies and guests. Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone delivered an address. He said: It gives me a great pleasure to get the privilege of stating a few words on the occasion of the Opening Ceremony of Thailand Trade Exhibition 2000.

As I understand this exhibition is organized by the Department of Export Promotion of the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand in collaboration with the Board of Trade, Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon. This is also the third Thai products exhibition in Myanmar. It is universally accepted that trade fairs and trade exhibitions are the places which bring the buyers and the sellers face to face. They can negotiate the quality, quantity, price, delivery terms, payment mechanism and sign the contracts during the exhibition days or at a later date. It is therefore generally accepted that single country exhibition like this, or participation in the international trade fairs are the effective ways of export marketing.

We heartily welcome this kind of trade exhibition not only from Thailand but also from other countries as well. Recently Myanmar exhibitors from 29 companies have participated in Golden Triangle Friendship Trade Fair 2000 held in Tachileik, the border town opposite of Meisai District of Thailand. In that Trade Fair, Thailand, Laos and China also participated. The Trade Fair was organized by Regina International Co Ltd of Thailand and supported by the Export Promotion Department, Ministry of Commerce of Thailand. We have hosted in the past few years quite a number of trade fairs, single country trade exhibitions and specialized exhibitions on construction materials, packaging and small scale machineries from India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, People's Republic of China and Singapore. Myanmar has also participated in the international trade fairs occasionally and organize Myanmar's Trade Fairs in Yangon inviting exhibitors from abroad. The relations between Myanmar and Thailand have been characterized by close friendship, mutual goodwill and co-operation in every possible areas throughout the years since we have established diplomatic relations in August 1948. Our two countries have a common denominator in the long histories of cultural development under Buddhist influences. On the strength of this affinity, our two nations have been cultivating, genuinely, friendly ties of co-operation in all sectors. Knowing that Myanmar is the country with large stores of natural resources and 18 million active labour force, the total volume of foreign direct investment up to now has exceeded 7.3 billion US dollars. Thailand is the third largest investor in Myanmar.

We deeply appreciate and thank you very much for your kind interest to do business with us. As I understand, about one hundred and fifty Thai companies are participating in this exhibition, displaying quite a wide range of products including construction materials, textiles, chemicals, pharmaceutical products, electrical products, rubber products, cosmetics, food items amongst others. Thailand Trade Exhibition 2000, in my view, will serve as a symbol of growing economic and trade co-operation between our two neighbouring countries, Myanmar visitors to the exhibition will get the opportunity to know more about the Thai products and it will certainly contribute to increase bilateral trade between Myanmar and Thailand.

Then, Deputy Minister of Commerce Mr Phaithoon Kaeothong said: This is the third consecutive year the Thailand Exhibition has been organized in Yangon and it has proven to be a major event and an excellent model of trade cooperation between Thailand and Myanmar. This year, the Department of Export Promotion, Ministry of Commerce of Thailand as the fair organizer, would like to present you with a variety of Thai quality products from over 140 Thai companies ranging from food products, household products, cosmetics, children's' products, electrical products, construction materials, auto parts and accessories, furniture, etc. The highlight of the Thailand Exhibition this year is the " Fashion Bazaar", an area specifically for displaying clothing, textile, leather goods and footwear. The successful arrangement of this show has been achieved through mutual operation built up between the Thai and Mayhems public and private sectors. I, therefore, would like to express my sincere appreciation to all concerned parties, for their efforts and commitment to the success of this event. On this very auspicious occasion, It gives me great pleasure in officially declaring the Thailand Exhibition 2000 open and wish you all much success in your business endeavors. Afterwards, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and Deputy Minister Phaithoon Kaeothong formally opened the exhibition.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party toured the exhibition. On display at 144 booths of the exhibition are auto-parts chemicals, articles for children, construction materials, cosmetics, electrical appliances, fishing equipment, foodstuff, furniture, kitchen utensils, leather ware, machinery and plastic ware. The exhibition will be kept open from 9.30 am to 6 p.m. till 3 December.
