(1) Secretary-1 inspects progress of construction work on Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 26 Nov- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township at 5 p.m. today. The Secretary-1 was welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge and officials. First, the Secretary-1 inspected the carving of the Image, construction of Gandhakuti Kyaungdawgyi, the southern stairways and the retaining walls and Myanmar artistic works. Officials conducted the Secretary-1 round the construction site. Then, the Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions to officials and left the hill at 5.40 p.m.
 


(2) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Museum on Narcotic Drugs

YANGON, 26 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected construction of the Museum on Narcotic Drugs at the corner of Hanthawady and Kyundaw Streets in Kamayut Township this evening. The Secretary-1, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the construction site of the Museum on Narcotic Drugs at 3.45 p.m.

They were welcomed by Chairman of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, committee members and departmental officials. In the briefing hall, Minister Col Tin Hlaing reported on progress of construction work, the growing of trees and flowering plants, and Chairman of Yuzana Construction Group U Htay Myint on work to be carried out. The Secretary-1 gave instructions on the work. Then, the Secretary-1 inspected progress of construction work and left instructions.
 


(3) Political Commissar of PRC Nanjing Military Command departs

YANGON, 26 Nov -The goodwill delegation led by Political Commissar of Nanjing Military Command General Fang Zuqi of the People's Liberation Army of China departed for home by air this afternoon.

The goodwill delegation members were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Director of Military Training Brig-Gen Aung Kyi, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong, Military Attaché Senior Colonel Xu Shulai and officials.

The delegation arrived Myanmar on 24 November. Accompanied by Deputy Chief (Air) of Armed Forces Training Col Ko Ko and Military Attach'  Senior Colonel Xu Shulai, the goodwill delegation members left Yangon for Mandalay by special Tatmadaw aircraft on 24 November.

They were welcomed at Mandalay International Airport by Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Nay Win, Consul-General Mr He F Hijing and senior military officers.

They proceeded to Mandalay Myanan Sankyaw Shwenandaw and Cultural Museum. Officials conducted them round, and General Fang Zuqi signed the distinguished visitors' book.

Then they trekked on Mandalay Hill and paid obeisance at Hsutaungpyi Pagoda. The visiting General and party offered flowers, water and cash. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint hosted dinner in honour of the visiting General and party on the lawns of Mandalay Nandwin Yangyi Aung Tatmadaw Guest House.

After dinner, the visiting General and Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint exchanged gifts. The visiting General also presented a bouquet to the cultural troupe who entertained them with songs and dances. Yesterday, the visiting General and party studied the ancient palace walls and moat near Mandalay Nanmyo Mingala Bridge and had souvenir photos taken. They later went to PyinOoLwin in a motorcade.

At PyinOoLwin Defence Services Academy, Commandant Brig-Gen Tin Oo and other officers explained to them the history of the DSA and courses with the help of video slides. The visiting General signed the visitors' book and exchanged gifts with the Commandant. Later, the visiting General and party toured the computer centre and English proficiency course of the DSA, viewed the fitness training of the cadets and went round the battalions of the cadets.

They proceeded to the Defence Services Technological Academy where they were welcomed by Rector Brig-Gen Win Myint and other officers. The Rector and other officers showed the guests the documentary on the institute with the help of video slides. The visiting General signed the visitors' book and went round the campus. They later visited PyinOoLwin Kandawgyi before going back to Mandalay. They left for Yangon from Mandalay by special Tatmadaw aircraft. They were seen off at Mandalay International Airport by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and senior military officers.


(4) Secretary-3 hosts luncheon in honour of PRC goodwill delegation

YANGON, 26 Nov-Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint hosted a luncheon in honour of Chinese goodwill delegation led by Political Commissar of Nanjing Military Command General Fang Zuqi of People's Liberation Army of China at the Oasis View Point Hotel near Yangon International Airport this morning. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the luncheon.
 
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Military Affairs and Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Military Appointment-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Judge Advocate-General Maj-Gen Thein Soe, senior military officers, Chinese Ambassador Mr Liang Dong and Military Attaché Senior Colonel Xu Shulai.
 


(5) PRC TV delegation concludes visit

YANGON, 26 Nov-The Chinese TV delegation led by Vice-Minister of General Bureau of Broadcasting, Motion Picture and Television of People's Republic of China Mr Li Shuwen left here for home by air this afternoon. The delegation was seen of at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Information and officials of the Chinese Embassy.

Before their departure for home, the delegation, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, visited Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge. They had a souvenir photo taken in front of the monument which was put up to mark the building of the Bridge of friendship between the two countries this morning. They proceeded to Maha Bandoola Bridge and then posed for a souvenir photo there.


(6) Rice donated to monasteries in Yankin, Tamway Townships

YANGON, 26 Nov- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and wellwishers offered rice to Kyaukkon Tawya Meidini, Kyaukkon Kyaunggyi, Maha Bodi, Mogoung and Dham-mikarama (Kyaikpi) monasteries in Yankin Township this morning. Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned and wellwishers attended the ceremony at Kyaukkon Tawya Meidini Monastery.

The congregation took the Five Precepts from Presiding Nayaka of the monastery Agga Maha Ganthavanaka Pandita Bhaddantannanabala. The Chief of Staff (Navy), the Chief of Staff (Air), the deputy minister for Labour and senior military officers donated provisions to presiding Nayaka Sayadaws of the monasteries.

Then, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe and Camp Commandant Brig-Gen Hla Aung Thein offered rice donated by Tatmadaw families to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of Kyaukkon Tawya Meidini Monastery. Wellwishers including Yangon City Development Committee, Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Commandant Brig-Gen Myo Myint of Defence Services Records Office and Dr Daw Thi Thi Aye and others donated provisions to Sayadaws and presented cash towards the funds of monasteries to the Chief of Staff (Navy), the Chief of Staff (Air) and the deputy minister.  Rice donated to monasteries in Yankin, Tamway Townships .

Similarly, families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and wellwishers offered rice to Mingala Thukha Pali, Hsuhtupan Pariyatti, Dhamma Thukha Pariyatti, Mingala Zeyon Pariyatti, MyoU Pariyatti, Sasana Zeya Mingala, Atulamanaung Pariyatti, Satubonmika Pariyatti and Aungmingala Pariyatti monasteries in Tamway Township this morning. The congregation took the Five Precepts from Presiding Nayaka of Mingala Thukha Pali Monastery member of Yangon Division Working Committee of the Sangha Agga Maha Pandita Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandavamsa. Then, rice of Tatmadaw families was offered to Sayadaws.


(7) Commander inspects regional development tasks in Htantabin Township

YANGON, 26 Nov - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, together with division-level departmental officials, met with departmental officials and local farmers at Htantabin Township, Yangon North District, this afternoon and inspected agricultural matters and regional development tasks.

The Commander arrived at Asugyi Agriculture Education Camp in Htantabin Township at 2 pm. The Commander said that in Tetthitkyun region, over 140 drains have been built. The harvesting of monsoon paddy has started. It is necessary to plough fields to cultivate summer paddy and cold season crops such as pulses and beans and oil crops. Departments concerned will provide machinery and fuel oil.

Chairman of Htantabin Township Peace and Development Council U Thaung Han reported on agricultural matters and regional development tasks. Division Agricultural Manager U San Maung reported on arrangements to cultivate summer paddy, pulses and beans and oil crops, departmental officials on the work done by departments concerned and local farmers on requirements for cultivation of monsoon paddy and cold season crops. Then, the Commander attended to their requirements.

Afterwards, the Commander inspected the digging of Tamalo Canal. The officials reported on progress of work. The Directorate of Water Resources and Improvement of River Systems is building Tamalo Canal to prevent landslides at Anyisu. The bottom of the canal is 100 feet wide and its depth 3.5 metre.

The building of the canal requires the digging of 38,346 sundrums, and to date, altogether 3,245 have been dug. By using heavy machinery, Yangon Division Irrigation Department will continue to extend the canal from 400 feet up to 500 feet  Commander inspects regional  in width, and up to 3,500 feet in length.

The Commander called for completion of construction work during the open season. Afterwards, the Commander inspected cultivation of Pedishwewa being undertaken by Yangon Command on 100 acres at Anyisu alluvial land.

In Htantabin Township, monsoon paddy has been cultivated on 86,273 acres of land, and 23,263 acres of paddy have been harvested. It is targeted to cultivate summer paddy on 59,326 acres of land, and to date, cultivation of summer paddy has been done on 13,717 acres. It is targeted to grow pulses and beans on 10,000 acres, and to day 1,425 acres have been placed under pulses and beans. It is targeted to put 4,200 acres of land under oil crops, and cultivation of oil crops has been done on 780 acres.

Commander attends third round of Myanmar London Golf Tour

YANGON, 26 Nov- Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein, President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, officials and spectators attended the third round of the Sixth Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001, organized by MGF and Professional Golfers' Association and mainly sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, at Kengtung Golden Triangle Golf Club this morning.

After the third round, former Myanmar selected golfer Win Aung was leading the professional division with 221 strokes, followed by Myint Thaung (222) and Win Naing Tun and Myint Shwe were 223. In the amateur division, Zaw Zaw Latt put his position in the first place with 216 strokes, Nanda Kyaw (225) and Aik Htaung (231). Tiger Beer, Yangon Airways, Canon, Star Cola and Wilson jointly sponsor the tour aimed at turning out outstanding players. The tour is being organized by Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd. The final round of the tour continues tomorrow.

Minister inspects communication services in Mandalay

YANGON, 25 Nov-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, accompanied by responsible officials, arrived at Datang Exchange installed at Pyigyidagon Township in Mandalay on 23 November. The in-charge of the exchange reported to him on installation of telephone equipment and lines with the help of charts.

The minister inspected the exchange, the control room and power supply. He gave necessary instructions to the officials and presented a basket of fruits to the Chinese technicians who are discharging duties there. He also inspected construction of building for the staff. Then, the Minister inspected the GSM radio station in Pyigyidagon Township where the in-charge of the station reported on completion of the tower and installation of machinery with the help of charts. The Minister inspected the station and gave necessary instructions. He also inspected the Pyigyidagon Post Office.

On 24 November, the Minister attended the opening ceremony of Postmaster Course attended by 56 postmasters from Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions and delivered a speech. As postmasters are playing a prominent role for development of communication, they are to observe rules of conduct, avoid misdeeds, discharge duties fully, and give right supervision to the staff.

Commander, Minister visit Orbis Flying Hospital in Mandalay

YANGON, 26 Nov-Orbis Flying Hospital landed at Mandalay International Airport yesterday. Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and officials visited it. The commander and the minister received the staff of Orbis International and fulfilled their requirements. Eye operation and technology exchange programmes between Myanmar medical scientists and the staff of Orbis will be carried out and training will be given to under- and post-graduate trainees from 25 November to 16 December. On 25 November, the minister inspected People's Hospital in Sagaing Township and gave instructions on health care service, cost-sharing programme and welfare for service personnel.

Market Festival of Singapore Association of Myanmar opens

YANGON, 26 Nov-An opening ceremony of the Market Festival of Singapore Association of Myanmar (SAM) was held on the lawns of Inya Lake Hotel this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Ambassador of Singapore Mr Simon De Cruz, Chairman of SAM Mr Frankie Chew and officials. Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Ambassador Mr Simon De Cruz and Mr Frankie Chew formally opened the market festival. Profits gained from yearly festivals and forty per cent of the donations collected from wellwishers will be presented to MMCWA and the rest to schools under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.

Malaysian Rural Development Minister concludes visit

YANGON, 26 Nov-Minister for Rural Development of Malaysia Dato Azmi Khalid and wife Yang Berbehgia Datin Yasmin Abdullah and party, visiting here at the invitation of Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, left here for home by air this morning. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister Col Thein Nyunt and wife Daw Kyin Khaing, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Malaysian Ambassador Dato' Mohammad Bin Noh, Director-General of Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department Col Than Swe and officials.

Delegation leaves  for PRC

YANGON, 26 Nov- A Myanmar industrial delegation led by Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Kyaw Win left here by air for the People's Republic of China today to study industries in China. They were seen off at the Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun, managing directors and families of the delegation members.
 
First non -stop Pathana recitation begins at Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon)

YANGON, 26 Nov-The first non-stop Pathana recitation of Waradahta Datuzediya Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon) built on Dhammapala Hill in Mayangon Township was held at the Tazaung in the precincts of the Pagoda this morning. Present were Ovadacariya Sayadaws led by member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Presiding Sayadaw of Kalaywa Tawya Sarthintaik Dwipitakadhara Dwipitaka Kovida Agga Maha Ganthavanaka Pandita Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Jagarabhivamsa, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, guests and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees. The chairman of the Pagoda Board of Trustees supplicated on holding of the first non-stop Pathana recitation. The congregation received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Jagarabhivamsa. The Sayadaw delivered an Ovadakatha. Members of the Sangha then started recitation of Pathana.


(9) 20 Ngaphe Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 24 Nov-Twenty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngaphe Township, Magway  Division. Twenty  members of Ngaphe  Township NLD, Magway  Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-Commission and the party concerned on 1 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
