(1) General Maung Aye calls on Indian Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee, goes on   Bodhgaya pilgrimage 

YANGON, 22 Nov - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye on  an official 1goodwill visit to New Delhi, India, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister of the Republic of  India Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee at the Office of the Indian Prime Minister at 7.30 p.m. on 20 November.

Also present together with General Maung Aye were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla,  Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Myanmar Ambassador to India U Tin Latt. Together with  Indian Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee were Minister for External Affairs Shri Jaswant Singh,  National Security Advisor Mr Brajesh Mishra, the Secretary and the Joint-Secretary of the Ministry of  External Affairs, the Ambassador of India to Myanmar, the Co-Secretary of the Indian Prime Minister's  Office. After the courtesy call, Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee hosted dinner in honour of  Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye and party. The official  goodwill Myanmar delegation led by General Maung Aye and wife, left Yangon by the special flight of  Myanma Airways on 14 November, and reached Patna in the State of Bihar, India, at 10.20 am local  time.

They were welcomed at Jaiprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna by Governor of Bihar Mr B  C Pandey, Chief Minister Mrs Rabri Devi, Chief Secretary Mr Mukuh Prasad, and other Indian officials,  and Ambassador of Myanmar to India U Tin Latt and wife.

Accompanied by the Ambassador of India to Myanmar, the Ambassador of Myanmar to India and wife,  Joint Secretary of the Ministry of External Affairs Mrs L K Ponappa, General Maung Aye and wife Daw  Mya Mya San, and members of the official goodwill Myanmar delegation left for Gaya by helicopters of  Indian Air Force.

They were greeted at Gaya Airport by the monks of the international Buddhist monastery, Gaya  Commissioner Mr A C Rangin, Police Deputy Inspector General Mr B C Verma, Military Attach of  Myanmar to India Col San Lin, and other officials. They proceeded in a motorcade to the Hotel  Bodhgaya Ashok where they would stay.
 
At 3 p.m. local time, they left the hotel for Gaya where they were welcomed by the Sayadaws and  members of the Sangha of Gaya Buddhist Monastery, and pilgrims from Myanmar. After paying  respects to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha, the General and party received the Five Precepts  from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Naninda. They offered alms to the Sayadaws, and Head of the International  Theravada Tekkatho Pariyatti Department Bhamo Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon,  followed by sharing of merits.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Naninda presented Dhamma gifts to General Maung Aye, who later showed  confetti. They next visited the International Buddhist Monastery on the precincts of Bodhgaya  Mahabodhi Temple, paid respects to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. General Maung Aye  and wife Daw Mya Mya San and party received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasila.  Secretary of the Trustees Committee for Mahabodhi Temple Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasila spoke of  the history of the pagoda and renovation work. General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San and  party presented religious books and gold foils for gilding to the Sayadaws.

After that Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung supplicated on religious matters. General Maung Aye  presented Rs 1.5 million donated by the State Peace and Development Council towards the fund for  Mahabodhi Temple to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasila who presented the certificate of honour. Next,  Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasila presented Dhamma gifts to General Maung Aye and party. The donation  ceremony concluded with sharing of merits. Afterwards, General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya  San and party paid obeisance to the Buddha Image at Mahabodhi Temple and gilded the image. After  paying obeisance at the sacred Bodhi Tree and offering water and thingan, they toured the compound  and viewed the significant edifices.

At 5.30 am on 15 November, they paid homage to Bodhgaya Mahabodi Temple and  offered fruits to the pagoda. On the upper terrace of the Temple, they paid obeisance to Buddha images.  The Myanmar goodwill delegation also visited the Bodhi Tree and the sacred gold throne. Sayadaw  Bhaddanta Panna sila presented Bo saplings to General Maung Aye. The General and party helicoptered  to Patna.

They then proceeded to Bangalore on board the special Indian Air Force plane. On arrival at Bangalore  Airport, they were welcomed by Governor of Karnataka State Smt VS Rama Devi, Karnataka State  Prime Minister Shri SM Krishna, Joint Secretary of External Affairs Ministry Mrs LK Ponappa,  Bangalore Mayor Shri Rama Chandrappa and officials. The General and delegation then visited  Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Officials reported to the General and delegation on founding of the  company and manufacturing of various types of aircraft. They then went to Raj Bhavan, the Karnataka  State Guest House, and met Governor of Karnataka State Smt VS Rama Devi and officials.

Also present at the dinner together with the General and wife Daw Mya Mya San were  Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for  Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win, Minister U Aung Thaung, Minister  Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister U Khin Maung Thein, Minister U Win Aung and wife Daw San Yone,  Minister U Thaung, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Chief of OSS Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy  Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw, Myanmar Ambassador U Tin Latt and wife Daw Khin Swe Win.  Governor of Karnataka State Smt VS Rama Devi was accompanied by Speaker of the House of  Representatives of Karnataka State Mr MV Venkatappa, Minister of Home Affairs of Karnataka State  Mr Mallikarjuna M Kharge, Minister of Construction of Karnataka State Mr N Dharam Singh, Minister  of Industry of Karnataka State Mr RV Deshpande, Joint Secretary of External Affairs Ministry Mrs LK  Ponappa, Joint Chief Secretary of Karnataka State Mrs Teresa Bhattacharya and Ambassador Mr  Shyam Saran. The Myanmar goodwill delegation spent the night at Hotel Windsor Manor.

On 16 November, the General and delegation visited Indo-American Hybrid Seeds (India) Pvt Ltd.  They were welcomed by Chairman and Managing Director of the company Manmohan Attavar and  officials. The officials explained various crops cultivated by the company on commercial scale and its  functions with audio-visual aids. The General signed in the visitors' book and exchanged gifts with the  chairman. The Myanmar delegation then left Bangalore by air for New Delhi.

They were seen off at the airport by Governor of Karnataka State Smt VS Rama Devi, Minister of  Industry of Karnataka State Mr RV Deshpande and officials. On arrival at Air Force Station Palam in  New Delhi at 9.30 pm, the General and delegation were welcomed by Deputy Secretary of External  Affairs Ministry Mr Agit Panja, Secretary Mr Lalit Mansing, Head of the Protocol Department Mr  Manbir Singh and official and Myanmar Military Attache Col San Lin, Counsellor U Soe Hlaing and  wife, staff and families. The General and delegation spent the night at Maurya Sheraton Hotel.
  


(2) Ambassador U Khin Maung Lay presents credentials to Sri Lankan President

YANGON, 23 Nov-U Khin Maung Lay, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of  Myanmar to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, presented his Credentials to Her  Excellency Mrs Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic  of Sri Lanka, on 13 November 2000, in Colombo.

Yangon University and Kyonggi University of ROK sign MoU

YANGON, 22 Nov-Yangon University and Kyonggyi University of Republic of Korea have become sister  universities after an agreement was reached between the two sides. The contract signing ceremony was  held at International Business Centre this morning, attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung,  Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt, Ambassador of ROK Mr Chung Jung Gum, Chancellor Mr Chong Kuk  Son of Kyonggi University, directors-general, chairmen, deputy directors-general of departments under  the Ministry, rectors, pro-rectors, professors, heads of departments from universities and colleges in  Yangon and officials. After signing the MoU, Chancellor Mr Chong Kuk Son presented a printer and  five computers for Ministry of Education to Minister U Than Aung.  Then, Chancellor Mr Chong Kuk son  and Pro- rector Dr Pe Maung Than Than of Yangon University delivered speeches.


(3) Minister for PBANRDA meets UNDCP representative

YANGON, 22 Nov-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs  Col Thein Nyunt met UNDCP representative Mr Jean-Luc Lemahieu, whose resides in Yangon, at his  office at 1 p.m. today. They discussed matters related to progress of border areas and control of narcotic  drugs. Also present at the call were Deputy Director-General of Department for Progress of Border  Areas and National Races Lt.-Col Myint Swe and officials.

Minister meets Vice-President of Australian Interplast

YANGON, 22 Nov-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met a delegation led by Vice-President Mr  David Inglis of Australian Interplast, Australia at his office on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Street in Dagon  Township this afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers Professor Dr Mya Oo and  Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, and officials from the ministry.
 


(4) Information Minister meets PRC TV delegation

YANGON, 22 Nov-Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Chinese delegation led by Deputy  Minister of General Bureau of Broadcasting, Motion Picture and Television, China Mr Li Shuwen at the  meeting hall of Sarpay Beikman Building on Pyay Road at 3.30 p.m. today. National Legal Training Seminar opens

YANGON, 22 Nov - An opening ceremony of the National Legal Training Seminar co-sponsored by the  Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and the United Nations Drug Control Programme  (UNDCP) was held at the Hotel Equatorial yesterday. It was attended by departmental heads of the  Ministry of Defence, the Supreme Court, the Attorney-General's Office, Myanmar Police Force and  Customs Department. Joint Secretary of the CCDAC Police Col Kham Aung and Coordinator of  UNDCP Mr Gerassimos Fourlanos made speeches. Altogether 35 officers of the Ministry of Defence,  the Supreme Court, the Attorney-General's Office, Myanmar Police Force and Customs Department  are attending the three-day seminar.


(5) Claim & Loss Prevention Seminar held

YANGON, 22 Nov-Seminar on Marine Cargo Claim & Loss Prevention co-sponsored by Myanma  Insurance of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue and Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Company,  Japan was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road, this morning, with an address by Deputy  Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun.

Also present on the occasion were Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung,  Managing Director of Myanma Insurance Col Thein Lwin and departmental heads, officials of Yasuda  Fire & Marine Insurance Company and guests. Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen  Than Tun said that the Seminar being held today will be useful and beneficial for not only to the staff of  Myanma Insurance but also to the staff of Government Organizations and others which are dealing with  marine cargo business.

The importance of marine cargo insurance cannot beaver emphasized since the main bulk of goods,  more than 80 per cent in world's trade are transported by seas and rivers, he added. Because of this  fact, export-oriented economies have to rely heavily on maritime transport, and marine cargo insurance  which safeguards the loss and damage of goods automatically plays a leading role, he noted. Marine  Cargo insurance consists of 35 per cent of the insurance business written by Myanma Insurance and it  also plays a crucial role in the growth of Myanma Insurance, he stressed. In view of this, he personally  urged the participants to take active part in the seminar not only to attend but to discuss and raise  questions whenever and wherever it is necessary and appropriate.

The participants should also apply the knowledge gained in the seminar to the daily work so that they  would get maximum benefit out of this Seminar, he reiterated. He said his opening words would not be  complete without extending thanks to the Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Company of Japan, which  sponsored this Seminar, and its Yangon Branch Office which oversees everything to make this Seminar  possible. He then announced the Seminar on Marine Cargo Claim & Loss Prevention officially open.  Yangon Branch Office in-charge of Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co Mr Marsashi Sawada made an  introductory speech, followed by a general round of discussions. The first session ended this afternoon  and the second session continues tomorrow.


(6) Minister inspects construction of Mone Creek multi-purpose dam and Salin dam projects
 
YANGON, 22 Nov-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by Chairman  of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, Managing Director of  Myanma Agri-culture Service U Tun Than, Managing Director of Myanma Cotton and Sericulture  Enterprise Dr Thein Htay,Director-General of Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Shwe,  Director-General of Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win and members of Magway Division  Supervisory Committee for Agriculture, arrived at construction site of Tanyaung Pumped Water Project  in Salin Township, Magway Division, on 20 November afternoon.

The director-general of Water Resources Utilization Department and officials reported to the minister on  Pumped Water Projects in Magway Division, completion of pumped water project in Tanyaung region  and future programme and Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen  Thein Zaw on flow of water of Ayeya-wady River, irrigated areas of Tanyaung Pumped Water Project  and sample of paddy and cotton for double and mixed cropping.

The minister gave instructions to them. Then, the minister and party inspected completed canals and  canals under construction to irrigate 15,000 acres and the related buildings. The minister and party then  arrived at construction site of Mone Creek multi-purpose dam project near Sedoktara Township in  Minbu District in the evening. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Brig-Gen Thein Zaw inspected  construction works of Mone Creek multi-purpose dam project, portal of out-let pipe, earth work, site  chosen for construction of hydel electric power station, digging of diversion tunnel, construction of the  spillway and the main dam on 21 November morning. The minister gave suggestions. Mone Creek  multi purpose dam will irrigate 108,000 acres for croup's cultivation and production of hydelelectric  power.

The minister and party also inspected construction of Salin dam project . Salin dam will irrigate 33,000  acre for crops cultivation.
The minister and party inspected construction of spillway, out- let pipe, control tower and main dam.

The minister and party them arrived at Umin Koepauk pumped water project in Chauk Township and  inspected construction work of the project in the evening. The minister gave instruction to officials.

Myanmar War Veteran Organization (Bago Division) holds Pre-conference

YANGON, 22 Nov-The Pre-conference of Myanmar War Veteran Organization (Bago Division) was held  at Thiri Oktha Hall of Oktha Myothit in Bago this morning, attended by Patron of Bago Division War  Veteran Organization Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye.

Also present were Secretary of Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veteran Organization  Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, members Vice-Adjutant-General  Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, delegates and guests.

The conference was chaired by members of Panel of Chairmen were Lt.-Col Tin Myint (Retd) Lt-Col  Myo Tint (Retd) abd Captain Khin Maung (Retd) and Daw Moe Thuza Kyaw and Daw Aye Thin  Khaing acted masters of ceremonies.

Hlegu Township to put 36,400 acres under summer paddy

YANGON, 22 Nov Ñ Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon  Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung  Than coordinated with officials on agriculture and regional development in Hlegu Township, Yangon  North District, this afternoon. On arrival at Hlegu Township Peace and Development Council Office, the  commander was welcomed by Commander of Indaing Station Col Hsan Aung, Chairman of Yangon  North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and officials. At his meeting with  officials, the commander said as it is the monsoon paddy harvesting season, preparations should be  made to cultivate summer paddy and winter crops on the harvested fields.

Officials should make coordinated efforts to grow summer paddy and cold season crops as projected in  the township, which is included in the irrigated area of Ngamoeyeik Dam. They should also  systematically record the up-to-date area of land put under rubber, which is an industrial crop. Rural  roads should be built for progress of the township; assistance will be provided to upgrade the earth  roads into gravel ones. Township level officials should make harmonious efforts for the development of  the township. Officials reported to the commander on agriculture , regional development undertakings  and tasks sector wise.  The commander gave suggestions.

Altogether 334 delegates attended the conference. Chairman Lt-Col Tin Myint (Retd) delivered an  opening address. Members of Bago Division War Veteran Organization Organizing Committee Major  Thein Win (Retd), Captain Bo Shwe (Retd) and Captain Kyaw Naing (Retd) submitted report of Bago  Division War Veteran Association. Captain Tun Myint (Retd) took part in national politics sector,  Captain Thein Tin (Retd) in defence and security, Major Min Min Oo (Retd) in economic sector,  Captain Tin Oo Lay (Retd) in social affairs and welfare sector and Captain Than Swe (Retd) in  community welfare sector. The conference approved seven future tasks and put two on record.

Chairman Lt-Col Tin Myint (Retd) delivered an closing address and the conference ended with the  chanting of slogans. Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veteran Organization presented K  one million for Bago Division Veteran Organization, Bago Division Peace and Development Council K  200,000, Bago District Peace and Development Council K 200,000, Toungoo District Peace and  Development Council K 200,000, Bago Division Fisheries Department K 100,000, Bago Division  Development Committee K 100,000, Bago Division Myanma Petroleum and Products Enterprise K  50,000, Bago Division Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading K 50,000, Bago Division Road Transport  Administration Department K 50,000 and Bago Division Immigration and National Registration  Department K 50,000.


(7) Mindhamma Hill crowded with monks, devotees

YANGON, 22 Nov- Members of the Sangha and Buddhist devotees were crowded Mindhamma Hill in  Insein Township today, where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept for public obeisance.  Engineers and physical and mental workers of special construction group-2 of Public Works were  carrying out construction of northern and southern stairways and south-eastern retaining walls and  all-round construction work of the hill. Sculptors led by U Taw Taw are carving the Image. Myanmar  architect U Ohn Tin and party are also doing decoration work. Wut associations recited religious verses  from 7 am to 10 p.m. Bookshops of the Religious Affairs Department, News and Periodicals Enterprise  and Sarpay Beikman were selling books on religion, knowledge and literature and calendars. Donations  to the fund of the Image amounted to over K 101 million.

Gold foils donated to Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 22 Nov- ceremony to offer gold foils donated by Cetanathabaya Wut Association,  Kyimyindine Township, to Shwedagon Pagoda was held at Cetanathabaya Tazaung on the pagoda  platform this morning. It was attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command  Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

Also present were Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Ovadacariya of the  Pagoda Board of Trustees Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Aungmyaybonsan Sayadaw Bhaddanta  Panindabhivamsa and members of the Sangha, members of Leading Committee for All-round Perpetual  Renovation of the Pagoda and members of Work Committee, guests, members of the Pagoda Board of  Trustees and well-wishers. Head of Yangon Division Religious Affairs Department U San Thin Hlaing  acted as the master of ceremonies.

Then, Sayadaw Bhaddanta Panindabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts, and members of the  Sangha recited the parittas. Offertories were presented to the members of the Sangha.    Afterwards, Chairman of the Wut Association U Than Lwin explained the purpose of the donation. The  donations were 54 ticals of gold foils three ticals each by well-wishers .The commander accepted the  donations. Later, a sermon was delivered, followed by sharing of merits gained.

YANGON, 22 Nov-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen  Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and party left here for Singapore by air this morning to  attend ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by  Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for  Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and departmental heads.

Member of CSSTB leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 22 Nov- Member of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Aung Myint and Deputy  Director- General  of Civil Service Selection and Training Department U Hla Kyi left here by air for  Thailand this morning to attend the Informal Meeting and 10th ASEAN Conference on Civil Service  Matters to be held from 23 to 24 November in Bangkok, Thailand. They were seen off at Yangon  International Airport by Chairman of CSSTB Dr Than Nyunt and officials.

PRC TV delegation arrives 

YANGON, 22 Nov-An eight-member Chinese delegation led by Deputy Minister of General Bureau of  Broadcasting, Motion Picture and Television, China Mr Li Shuwen arrived here at 12.45 p.m. today.  They were welcomed at the airport by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein,  Ambassador of China to Myanmar Mr Liang Dong and embassy staff, Director-General of Myanma  Radio and Television U Khin Maung Htay, Managing Director of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise U  Bo Kyi, Deputy Director-General of Myanma Radio and Television Lt-Col Thein Aung and officials.  This afternoon, the delegation, accompanied by Lt-Col Thein Aung, arrived at Nursery Market Festival  at Myaepadaethakyun where General Manager (Administration) of Myanma Agriculture Service U Myo  Nyunt and officials welcomed them and conducted them round the festival.

YANGON, 22 Nov- Deputy Minister for Industry 1 Brig- Gen Thein Tun met Chairman of Tomiya  Garment Co Ltd  Mr Kasuyakida and party from Tokyo at the meeting hall of the ministry this  morning.  Also presented the call were Managing Director of Myanma Textile Industries U Thein Maung  and officials.


(9) 14 members resign from Myittha Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 22 Nov-Fourteen members resigned of their own accord from the National League for  Democracy of Myittha Township, Mandalay Division. Fourteen members of Myittha Township NLD,  Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myittha Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 July 2000 as  they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
