Yangon, 7 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended opening of multi-media teaching centres at No 1 Basic Education High School and No 2 BEHS in Kayan Township today.
Accompanied by member of the Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, the Chief of Staff (Air), deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments and officials, the Secretary-1 left Yangon for Kayan Township.
On arrival at the town at 9.30 am, the Secretary-1 and party attended the opening of the multi-media teaching centre and a new two-storey building at No 2 BEHS.
Headmistress of the school Daw Shu Kyi and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Nay Win formally opened the centre and the building.
The Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard. Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party then inspected the different sectors of the centre and skill demonstration of the students. At No 1 BEHS, Headmaster U Win Kyaw Moe and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees Dr Tun Latt Aung formally opened the centre. The Secretary-1 unveiled the signboard.
At the ceremony marking the opening of the teaching centres, Headmaster U Win Kyaw Moe, on behalf of the school heads, thanked members of the school boards of trustees and parent-teacher associations and donors for their efforts in opening the centres. U Nay Win also explained efforts being made to open the centres.
Wellwishers then made donations to the two schools.The Secretary-1 then presented teaching aids to the school heads. Headmistress Daw Shu Kyi handed over the related documents of the two-storey building which cost K 9.7 million, to Deputy Director-General of the No 3 Basic Education Department U Tin Win. Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-1, on behalf of the State, thanked the members of the school board of trustees, parents, the public and donors for their participation in opening the centres.
In Byamazo Hall in Kayan Township, the Secretary-1 met with local authorities, departmental personnel and members of USDA and other social organizations.
Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Soe reported to the Secretary-1 on sown acreage and produce of monsoon paddy, winter crops, beans and pulses and edible oil crops in the township and condition of roads, bridges, irrigation facilities, communication, education and health.
After giving suggestions, the Secretary-1 said as the nation is striving for development of agriculture as the base in ensuring national all-round progress, the township should try to maintain its current success in the agricultural sector. He said that as the transport sector plays a vital role for regional development and socio-economic uplift, serious attention must be paid to proper maintenance and paving of roads linking towns and villages. The roads, he said, must be checked constantly so that they could be repaired when minor damages occur, and this would save major repairs. The government is implementing education, health and social welfare projects all over the country on priority basis, and townships are dutybound to develop their own regions on self-reliance. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged all township authorities to work hard for socio-economic development of the people of their respective regions.
Later, the Secretary-1 and party paid respects to Presiding Sayadaw of Kayan Pali Tekkatho Kainggon Kyaungtaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kelasa, and made cash donations. They arrived back in here this evening.
(2) Artistes starring, performing in nation-building teleplays honoured
Yangon, 7 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of the film artistes, who starred in the nation-building teleplays and TV programmes with goodwill, at the Kandawgyi Karaweik Palace today.
Also present at the dinner were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, senior officers of the Ministry of Defence, deputy ministers, officials, chairmen and secretaries of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon and Myanmar Music Asiayon, and guests.
First, the Secretary-1 cordially greeted the film artistes and guests. In his address, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the dinner was held to honour the artistes who, with their artistic skill and talent, have worked in the interest of the nation, and promotion of the race, religion and language. The artistes who were honoured at the dinner by the government were those who performed with goodwill and with keen interest in the teleplays on MRTV and Myawady TV commemorating and honouring the government's nation-building tasks, national movement, and the Tatmadaw's national leadership role. The teleplays performed by the artistes were " Doh chan-hte-hma-dotphyint pyawsaya" in commemoration of the Independence Day; "Si-lon-chin-ei ayatha" in commemoration of the Union Day; "Yin-hnit thee-char", "Amyin", "Nway-htway-swa kyo-so-chin" and "Chinthe-saunt-thaw shwe-gu" in commemoration of the Armed Forces Day; "Thayar so-pyay nga-doh-myay" and "Moe-myay-theint-theint" in commemoration of the Sixth Anniversary of the Union Solidarity and Development Association; "Chay-yar-meihlaing" and "Thamudaya-kanchay-hma thanyawzin-hlaing" honouring the Defence (Navy); " Thway-si let-hset moetho-tet-myi" depicting border region development projects; "U-ma-kwe thaik-mapyet" portraying national unity, and series of "Thi-kya-say thetthay-hnyun" arranged by Myetkhinthit Thukhuma Lwinbyin.
The Secretary-1 noted that the noble goodwill and interest of the artistes who performed in those teleplays have brought about invaluable benefits for the nation. He lauded the teleplay artistes who included movie directors, script writers, photographers, actors and actresses, and supporting actors and actresses, musicians, vocalists, production assistants and those who planned for telecast of the teleplays. As the presentations of the artistes are the objective conditions of the nation, the endeavours of the national forces under the State's leadership and the standard of the tradition and culture and the national dignity, the artistes can be said the face of the nation.
Moreover, they are loved and admired by the public. The artistes have the ability to win the admiration of the public, to make the people's heart gentle and to organize the public in the interest of the nation. Thus, the government has acknowledged the artistes as the powerful force on which the nation can rely, organized the artistes of different professions to become systematic and united forces and rendered assistance to their artistic, social and economic life. Due to the assistance provided by the government and the support given by the people, the different levels of the Myanmar movie, video and music sectors are winning unprecedented progress.
At present, the artistes can live proudly and can create artistic works in a peace of mind. Understanding the goodwill and the provisions of the government, the artistes are taking part energetically in the State's nation-building endeavours. The artistes are participating in national ceremonies, the fun raising tasks and ceremonies honouring the Tatmadawmen and national festivals. He honoured the artistes who had participated in the plays commemorating the significant days such as the independence day, the Union Day, the Armed Forces Day and the USDA, depicting the border area development tasks, propagating the religion and vitalizing the nationalists fervour.
In conclusion, he said all artistes who were honoured by the government would stand as famous and outstanding ones among the people.

(3) Secretary-1 attends inauguration of Golden Hill Tower, highest housing complex in Yangon
Yangon, 7 Nov - The Golden Hill Tower, the highest, modern 20-storey housing complex built here by YKK Development Ltd of Singapore, was commissioned into service with a formal inauguration ceremony at the Tower on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Bahan Township this morning.
The inauguration was graced by the attendance of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, ministers, the Yangon Mayor, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, the Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar and embassy staff, Chairman Mr Tadahiro Yoshida of YKK Corporation, Japan, and executives, and special guests.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard of the Golden Hill Tower. Next, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori and Chairman of YKK Corporation Mr Tadahiro Yoshida formally opened it.
The ceremony continued at the Mingala Mandat of the Golden Hill Tower. In his speech, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said Myanma Port Authority and YKK Development Ltd, Singapore, signed BOT and land-lease contracts for building the Golden Hill Tower. At first, it was planned to build a 12-storey housing complex, but in keeping with the guidance of the Head of State, it was built to be a 20-storey complex. The modern housing complex, he said, is the highest in Yangon and will be added to the glory of the city as well as to the promotion of living standard.
Next, Chairman Mr Tadahiro Yoshida of YKK Corporation, Japan, spoke words of thanks. In commemoration of the inauguration of the Golden Hill Tower, Mr Tadahiro Yoshida donated US $ 10,000 to Myanmar Education Committee and another US$ 10,000 to the National Health Committee. Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee and the National Health Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt accepted the donations.
After the ceremony, the guests went round in the Tower. The two main structures of the Golden Hill Tower have altogether 212 apartments 51 apartments with one bedroom each, 102 apartments with two bedrooms each, 53 apartments with three bedrooms each, six apartments with four bedrooms each. The total lease area of the Tower is 44,000 square-meter, with enough parking space, swimming pool and tennis courts.
(4) National industrialists urged to bring innovative ideas into use in producing, assembling motor vehicles with government's support
Yangon, 7 Nov - The Coordination Meeting No 1/2000 on production of motor vehicles organized by Myanma Industrial Development Work Committee was held at the Ministry of Industry-2 on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning, with an address by Patron of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Also present at the meeting were members of MIDC ministers, Chairman of the Work Committee Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, and the Work Committee member deputy ministers, departmental heads and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments, chairmen and members of nine subcommittees, industrialists and delegates of the industrial zones in Mandalay, Taunggyi, Myingyan, Monywa and Pakokku.
In his address, Lt-Gen Tin O said the meeting was the continuation of the seminar on production of motor vehicles and parts in Upper Myanmar, which was held in Mandalay on 28 and 29 October.
The delegates of the industrial zones in Mandalay openly discussed production of motor vehicles and parts, and toured the industries of the Ministry of Industry-2 to study manufacture of motor vehicles. It has been agreed at the previous meeting that instead of each industrialist producing and assembling their own model motor vehicles, each industrial zone has to design and produce one single motor vehicle and that the Ministry of Industry-2 has to designate and approve the motor vehicle designs and parts. Production of motor vehicles by the national industrialists is just on the initial stage, and they have to use and assemble most of the imported parts, the Secretary-2 emphasized their need to make innovations based on the advice and approval of the experts of the Ministry of Industry-2.
He assured the private industrialists that the government would provide financial, technological and material support in keeping with the guidance of the Head of State, and that plans are under way for them to get markets. The present meeting, he said, was to discuss plans in which the government and the private industrialists would have to cooperate for development of the industrial sector. In endeavouring for development of import substitute industries, their products must have quality control, attractive designs and durability, and be available at reasonable prices. Arrangements must be made to launch pilot tests to produce motor vehicles in respective industrial zones.
Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Work Committee Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin said the number of vehicles to be manufactured by industrial zones were discussed at the seminar in Mandalay. Representatives of industrial zones had observed motor vehicle production factories under the Ministry of Industry-2, he said.
Actual requirements, arrangements for production of vehicles meeting set standard and providing assistance are to be discussed practically and efforts are to be made for production of vehicles and other parts based on assistance provided by the government, he added. Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi and Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung took part in the discussions.
Representatives from Mandalay, Myingyan, Monywa, Pakokku and Taunggyi industrial zones reported on arrangements for production of vehicles and requirements.
Managing Director of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries U Soe Thein, Chairman of Industrial Research and Development Sub-committee Managing Director of Myanma Shipyards U Percy Maung Maung reported on assistance programmes. Next, Patron of MIDC Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo took part in the discussions. Officials of the Ministry of Industry-2 and industrial zone representatives discussed arrangements for production of vehicles in detail.
Tatmadaw track and field events conclude
Yangon, 7 Nov - Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) track and field championship of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services at Aung San Stadium today. The track and field championship was opened in the morning with an address by Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services.
Yangon Command won the men's championship trophy and the Central Command, the women's trophy. Brig-Gen Maung Nyo presented the championship trophies to the winning teams. Senior military officers also presented prizes to the winners in the respective events. Also present on the occasion were Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Soe Thein, President of Myanmar Track and Field Federation Col Myint Tun, senior officers of the Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air), guests and sports fans.

Myanmar delegation arrives backYangon, 7 Nov- A 5-member delegation led by Member of Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung Thaung arrived back here by sir this evening after visiting Lao People's Democratic Republic from 3 to 7 November at the invitation of the Lao PDR Revolutionary Youth Union.
The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Ambassador of Laos Mr Ly Bounkham and staff, Deputy Minister for Industry-1 Brig-Gen Thein Tun, directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry and family members. The delegation members' USDA CEC members Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Secretary of Shan State (East) USDA Dr Sai Hsay Kaw and Secretary of Kachin State USDA U Rawan Jone' also arrived back on the same flight.
Preparations begin for running of sugar mills in Bago Division
Yangon, 7 Nov- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at the farm of Myanma Agriculture Service in Kadok, DaikU Township, yesterday. In the briefing hall, Managing Director U Tun Than of MAS and officials reported on production of paddy quality strains and conducting research.
The minister inspected Hmawby-2 paddy field and agricultural research. At Nyaungbintha field in Phyu, officials reported to the minister on cultivation of paddy, sugarcane and matpe. The minister gave instructions on boosting cultivation and production and meeting the targeted sugarcane sown acreage.
At No 8 Sugar Mill in Zeyawady, the minister met sugarcane growers. Also present on the occasion were Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye and officials and sugarcane growers.
The factory manager reported on purchasing sugarcane, operating the mill and plans for cultivation of sugarcane in coming year. Then, farmers reported on sugarcane cultivation, sales and assistance of the departments.
Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye gave instructions on paddy and various crops cultivation in Bago Division and efforts to be made for achieving success in production of paddy, pulses and beans, sugarcane and cotton which are four economic pillars of the State.
Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin explained construction of sugar mills, production of sugarcane and plans to be implemented in the sugarcane special zones. Next, the commander and the minister inspected preparations for running of the mill. Then, the commander and the minister proceeded to No 6 Sugar Mill in Yedashe and met local sugarcane growers. The factory manager reported on running of the mill, sugarcane purchasing, transportation and production. Sugarcane growers also reported on ploughing, availability of quality strain and sales of sugarcane.
The commander and the minister gave instructions on works. Then, the commander and the minister inspected production process of Yedashe Sugar Mill which has been running since 2 November and warehouses. In the evening, the minister inspected completion of the conduit, construction of the main embankment and the spillway of Swa Creek Dam Construction Project. Director of Construction-5 of Irrigation Department U Win Maung reported on digging of canals, embankment construction and tasks to be undertaken in the opened season. The minister then gave necessary instructions.
Access roads being built to link with plantations in Hmawby TownshipYangon, 7 Nov-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by officials concerned, inspected plantations of the ministry close to Kyakansu Village and earth work for paving Kyakansu-Ngahsudaung Road Section in Hmawby Township, this morning.
The minister inspected a wide range of vegetables and onions grown in the plantations, and construction of roads linking one plantation zone with another. Then, the minister inspected construction of a tower and preparations for construction of Ahthayu Creek Bridge. The minister and party then inspected newly-completed earth road section, and the section being constructed with heavy machinery between Kyakansu and Taguton Village, and gave instructions to officials on meeting the set standard, building of the drains, completion of work on schedule, and regular inspection of machinery. Afterwards, the minister inspected land reclamation at No3 Special Vegetable Zone and left necessary instructions.
Minister for Rail Transportation inspects Central Institute for Transportation and Communications
Yangon, 7 Nov-Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung together with responsible officials inspected the railroads between Toekyaunggalay and Pyinmana Stations and gave instructions on maintenance work on 4 November. Member of Central Committee for Union Solidarity and Development Association U Pan Aung also met with the secretary and members of USDA at Kyaukdaga Station and urged them to strive for regional development and to abide by the rules and regulations and laws, and instructed the workers to discharge assigned duties properly. On 5 November, Minister U Pan Aung and wife Daw Nyunt Nyunt Lwin together with the staff and families of Myanma Railways (Division-11) offered"soon", Kathina robes and offertories to the members of the Sangha of Shwe Thalyaung Kyaung in Wundwin Township, Meikhtila District. Then the Minister inspected landscaping on the precincts of the Shwe Thalyaung Pagoda and gave necessary instructions. The Minister and party met with Principal U Win Aung, head of departments, lectures, tutors and staff at the Central Institute for Transportation and Communications in Meikhtila yesterday morning. He inspected the teaching aids and gave instructions.
Cyberenglish Course No 2 concludes
Yangon, 7 Nov-A ceremony to conclude Cyberenglish Course.e No 2 and open Course- No 3 co-sponsored by Human Resources Development Department of institute of Education and Myanmar New Zealand Education Centre was held at the meeting hall of Institute of Education this morning. It was attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt, director rectors, professors, heads of departments, students and parents.
President Professor U Han Tin of Human Resources Development Department of Institute of Education Yangon made a speech and presented prizes to 16 outstanding students of Course No 2. Then, the professor and academic coordinator Daw Khin Aye Lwin presented completion certificates to the student.Course No 2 was opened on 7 August and 334 students attended it.
(6) Work Committee Chairman meets officials
Yangon, 7 Nov - The Chairman of the Work Committee for Organizing the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions met members of the sub-committees and team managers in Bayintnaung Hall of No 1 Transit Centre this evening. Chairman of the Work Committee Commander of No 3 Military Region Col Win Maung gave a speech. Sub-committee members and managers of the state/division teams then took part in the discussions.
(7) Ministry of Mines reviews work in second four months
Yangon, 7 Nov-The second four-monthly work review meeting and the coordination meeting to exceed the third four-monthly targets were held at the Ministry of Mines yesterday. Present were Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister U Myint Thein, the managing directors and directors-general of enterprises and departments and officials. The minister spoke on the occasion. The deputy minister, the managing directors and directors-general of enterprises and departments, managers and advisers reported on work, production, innovations, achievements and requirement. The minister took part in the discussions. The first session of the meeting ended in the evening. The second day session was held this afternoon. Officials concerned reported on work done. The minister spoke on exploration of mineral deposits, minimizing wastage and loss of materials and exceeding the targets.
(8) Policies on development for financial and monetary matters opens
Yangon, 7 Nov- A seminar on the policies on development for financial and monetary matters in market economic system, sponsored by Central Bank of Myanmar and Japan Centre for International Finance-JCIF, was held at the Traders Hotel this morning. Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun gave an opening speech and Vice-Chairman of JICF Mr Rei Masunaga gave a speech. Also present on the occasion were Governor of CBM U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, officials, guests and trainees. Mr Rei Masunaga of JICF and party will discuss monetary policy, control of of foreign exchange and stocks and shares exchange from 7 to 9 November.
(9) Training on Current Trend in Drug Abuse Management opened
Yangon, 7 Nov-A ceremony to open Training on Current Trend in Drug Abuse Management organized by Prevention and Treatment of Drug Addiction Project of Health Department was held at the meeting hall of Drug Addict Treatment and Research Department of Psychiatrist Hospital this morning. It was attended by Deputy Director-General (Public Health) Dr Soe Aung of Health Department, Ministry of Health, Director (International Relations) Police Col Sit Aye of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control, Medical Superintendent Dr Toe Aung of Psychiatrist Hospital in Yangon, Project Manager Dr Ba Thaung of Drug Addict Treatment and Research Department, Professor Dr Sao Sai Lone of Psychiatry Department, departmental officials and trainees. Deputy Director-General Dr Soe Aung and Police Col Sit Aye made speeches. A total of 40 psychiatrists are attending the training course that will last till 9 November.
(10) 54 Labutta Township NLD members resign of own accord
Yangon, 7 Nov-Fifty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division. Fifty-four members of Labutta Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Labutta Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
