YANGON, 29 Oct-Chair man of the State Peace and development Council Commander-in-Chief of  Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing attended the 11th Kathina  robes offering ceremony of the families of the Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence at Tatmadaw  Dhammayon on Arzani Road this-morning and offered Kathina robes and alms to the Sayadaws.

Present at the ceremony were the State Ovadacariya Sayadaws, Chairman of the State Sangha Maha  Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan  Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita and member Sayadaws, members of the Sangha, Vice-Chairman of the State  Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in- Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief  (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San, Secretary-l of the State Peace and
Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services  Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo's wife  Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint's wife Daw Khin Cho Oo, members of the State  Peace
and Development Council and their wives, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung  Khin, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, the ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attomey-General, the  Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the Yangon Mayor, senior  military officers, the deputy ministers, departmental heads, officers and other ranks of the Directorate of
Defence Services Intelligence and other intelligence units, and their families. The ceremony commenced  with three-time recitation of the gatha starting with namotassa.

On behalf of Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru  Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita; Vice-Chairman  Masoeyein Taikthit Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa invested the
congregation  headed by Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing with the Five Precepts.

Afterwards, the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas. Next, Chairman of the State  Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing offered  Kathina robes to the State Ovadacariya Maha Aungmyay Bonkyaw Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Agga Maha
Pandita Bhaddanta Nayaka, and robes and alms to Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka  Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Sayadaw  Bhaddanta Sobhita.

Later, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of  Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San,  Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and  Director of De-fence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe,  Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo's wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint's wife Daw Khin  Cho Oo and others presented robes and offertories to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha.

Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga
Maha Saddhammajotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered a sermon. The congregation led  by the Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing shared merits for the pious deeds done. The ceremony  ended with the three-time recitation of Buddha sasanam ciram tithatu. "Soon" was offered to the Sayadaws  and members of the Sangha.

Provisions offered to monasteries in Hline Township

YANGON, 29 Oct-Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers offered rice,  cooking oil, salt, medicine, gram and cash towards the funds of Panditayama, Yadana Theinga, Wayalet,  Thiri Mingala, Zeya Mingala and Maha Wuntha DhammaRekkhita monasteries in Hline Township this  morning.

At Panditayama Monastery in Ward 13 of Hline Township, departmental officials and well-wishers  attended the donation ceremony. Chairman of Hline Township Sangha Nayaka Commit tee Presiding  Nayaka of Panditayama Monastery Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Pandita administered the Five
Precepts. Officials then offered provisions to presiding Nayaka Sayadaws of the monasteries.

Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun, General Staff Officer (Grade-I) Cmdr Than Htaik and Officiating  Colonel Air Staff Lt-Col Tin Win presented rice donated by Tatmadaw families to the presiding Nayaka  Sayadaw.

Next, well-wishers donated offertories to respective presiding Nayaka Sayadaws and K 354,000 for the  funds of six monasteries to officials.

Similarly, Tatmadaw families and well-wishers donated provisions to Myitta Wadi Hinthada, Maygawun,  Aung Yadana Winyaw, Sasana Aye, Kyangin, Tettwin and Zeyawady monasteries in Hline Township this  morning.

(2)  Secretary-1 inspects progress in carving Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image

YANGON, 29 Oct- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township at 3 p.m today. The Secretary-1 was welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Adviser to the State Peace and
Development Council Office U Arnt Maung and officials.

The Secretary-1 paid homage to the Image. Then, the Secretary-1 inspected progress of work in carving
the Image and gave necessary instructions to officials. The Secretary-1 also inspected construction of Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi in which the Image will be kept, and the building of the southern retaining wall of  the hill. In the briefing hall, Minister U Aung Khin and officials of the Central Committee for All-round  Construction of the Hill and respective committees reported on progress of work and tasks to be carried  out. The Secretary-1 gave necessary instructions to officials and left the hill in the evening.


(3) Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions go on

YANGON, 29 Oct- The Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions continued for the fourth day at four designated venues today. The singing competition continued at the National Museum  on Pyay Road in Dagon Township, the dancing competition at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung  Street in Dagon Township, the song composing competition at Kanbawza Theatre of the Fine Arts  Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Bahan Township and the music competition at
Padomma  Theatre on Bagaya Road in Sangyoung Township.

Present on the occasions were Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Patron of the Organizing the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Chairman of the Work Committee for Organizing  members, officials of the Sub-committees, teachers and students of the basic education schools and people

At the National Theatre, altogether 13 competitors took part in the higher education level (women's) Maha  Gita contest and 14 in the higher education level (women's) old/modern song contest. Chairman of the  Panel of Judges U Min Naung and party supervised the competition. On 30 October, the amateur
level  (men's) Maha Gita contest and the basic education level (5-10 age group) boys' religious song contest will  be held at the same venue.

Dancing Competition At the National Theatre, a total of 16 schoolgirls of States and Divisions took part in  the basic education level (15-20 age group) (girls') dancing contest and 14 in the basic education level (5-10  age group) boys' dancing contest. Chairman of the Board of Judges U Sein Aung Min and
party supervised  the contests. On 30 October, the basic education level (15-20 age group) (girls') piano contest and the basic  education level (10-15 age group) (boys') piano contest will be held at the National Theatre. Song  Composing Competition At Kanbawza Theatre, 14 persons of States and
Divisions took part in the  professional level song composing contest. Chairman of the Board of Judges Bogale Tint Aung and party  supervised the contests. Contestants of the basic education level (5-10age group) and the basic education  level (15-20) will practise the song composing tomorrow.

Music Competition At Padomma Theatre, eight persons of States and Divisions took part in the professional level (men's) orchestra troupe contest. Before the afternoon programme, orchestras of schoolgirls of Dagon Basic Education High School No 3 and Sangyoung BEHS No 2 entertained audience  with variety songs. Then, six boys of States and Divisions took part in the basic education level (15-20 age  group) (boys') orchestra troupe competition. On 30 October, the amateur level (men's)
solo orchestra  competition and the higher education level (men's) solo orchestra competition will be held at the same  venue.


(4) Secretary-1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt view Mahothada Drama Competition

YANGON, 29 Oct-The Mahothada Drama Competition of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street in Dagon Township at 7 p.m today, attended by Patron of Organizing Committee for the Eighth Myanma
Traditional  Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin  Nyunt and wife Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe. Group-1 of Yangon Division (Yangon Chantha) Mahothada  drama troupe took part in the competition. Present also were Daw Khin Than Nwe, wife of
Secretary-2  Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Chairman of Leading Committee for the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing  Arts Competitions Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen  Khin Maung Than and wife, the wife of Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral
Maung Maung Khin,  ministers and their wives, members of the panel of patrons for the leading committee, members of the  leading committee, work committees and sub-committees and the public.

At 7 PM tomorrow, Mandalay  Division drama troupe will take part in the competition.


(5) Government fulfils requirements for growth of private industries

YANGON, 29 Oct-A seminar on production of parts of motor vehicles and others, which was attended by  industrialists from industrial zones of Upper Myanmar, was held under the sponsorship of Myanmar Industrial Development Committee at Kanaung Industrial Hall in Industrial Zone-1 in Mandalay
yesterday  and today.

Patron of Myanmar Industrial Development Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development
Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered a speech.

Also present were members of  Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint , North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win,  ministers, deputy ministers, the Mayor of Mandalay, senior military officers, officials of the State  Peace and Development Council Office and heads of department, officials of Mandalay and
Sagaing  Divisions, industrialists of Mandalay Industrial Zones-1 and 2, Meiktila, Myingyan, Monywa, Yenangyoung,  Pakokku and Ayethaya industrial zones and guests.

The Secretary-2 said the seminar was held with the aim of giving encouragement to innovation work for production of motor vehicle parts at industrial zones and development of industrial zones. He said that during his inspection tour of Mandalay Industrial Zone, Chairman of the State Peace and Development
Council Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance on development of private industries and the upgrading  of light industries to heavy ones. He said encouragement is being given to the growth of industries at  industrial zones in accord with the guidance of the Senior General, and industrial zone-wise coordination  meetings have been held. Matters related to production of motor vehicle parts are to be discussed  separately. Chairman of Central Industrial Development Committee General Maung Aye inspected  Ayethaya Industrial Zone in Taunggyi on 16 October and he said priorities for development of industries  were farm equipment, machine tools and import-substitute factories.

The Secretary-2 said production of motor vehicles parts as well as farm equipment was important and industrialists was had been to produce pumps, threshers, transplanting machines and harvesters. He spoke  of the need to do research work for development of production. In production of farm equipment,
necessary assistance for technology transfer, research work, supply of raw materials and installation of modern machines in industrial zones was provided, he added.

National private industry would develop in cooperation with accelerated momentum of the State sector and  the private sector and the government would fulfil actual requirements for development of private industries. He said based on the guidance of the Head of State arrangements have been made for over
coming difficulties of private industries and some have been implemented practically. He also stressed the  importance of production of high quality parts of vehicles and farm equipment.

The government would welcome the innovations of private industrialists and provide assistance to them till  they gained achievement, he said. Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council  Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint said that there are about 8,000 private industries in Mandalay
Division;  Mandalay Sanpya Sethmu Myothit is the first industrial zone of its kind; Mann Star Jeep, assembled in  Mandalay, has earned popularity at industrial exhibitions. Motor vehicle manufacturers who are going to  take part in the seminar, are experienced persons interested in manufacturing motor
vehicles. The purpose  of holding the seminar is to encourage the growth of industries.

Next, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win explained matters related to establishment of Monywa Industrial Zone, the rendering of technical and monetary assistance and markets. Chairman of Myanmar Industrial Development Work Committee
Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin said that the seminar is held to encourage private industrialists  and to give impetus to import-substitute industries.

He expressed his belief that the seminar will cover the matters related to the number, designs and performance of motor vehicles manufactured by industries. At the seminar, the production process of motor vehicles of Htonbo Automobile Factory under the Ministry of Industry-2 has been shown, and
private industrialists will understand requirements.

Then, the seminar recessed. The Secretary-2 and party inspected consumer goods and parts of machinery  manufactured from Mandalay Industrial Zone and parts of motor vehicles by factories under the Ministry  of Industry-2. Then, they inspected motor vehicles, machines used for sinking artisan
wells, mowers,  cranes and fire engines assembled at Mandalay Industrial Zone-1, Ayethaya Industrial Zone and Pakokku  Industrial Zone. Adviser to the Ministry of Industry-2 Dr Kyaw Htin submitted a paper on the assessment  of the manufacturing of motor vehicles in Myanmar and in the world.

Industrial Zone  discussed matters pertaining to the manufacturing of parts of motor vehicles. General
Manager of No 1  Automobile Factory under the Ministry of Industry-2 U Hlaing Thein discussed manufacturing of heavy  vehicles, General Manager of No 1 Automobile Factory (Htonbo) U Kyaw Myo Win manufacturing of  light vehicles, Director of Directorate of Myanma Industrial Planning U Aung
Soe Win the inspection of  performance and quality of motor vehicles. Head of Mandalay Division Road Transport Administration  Department U Khin Maung Htwe dealt with inspection of motor vehicles and the issuing of licenses. The  seminar continued for the second day this morning.

The delegates of Mandalay Industrial Zone, Pakokku Industrial Zone, Ayethaya Industrial Zone and Monywa Industrial Zone presented requirements for the manufacturing of parts of motor vehicles and other vehicles. Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Nyi Hla Nge explained technical matters
to  be taken into account in manufacturing parts of motor vehicles and other vehicles, and Deputy Minister for  Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan arrangements to make it easy to import necessary machinery for the  manufacturing of motor vehicles and other vehicles.

Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin spoke of measures to be taken to fulfil requirements of industrialists. Commanders Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Maj-Gen Soe Win explained matters related to assistance to be provided for the growth of industries.

Then, the Secretary-2 expressed his belief that the results of the seminar will contribute to the systematic  manufacturing of parts of motor vehicles and other vehicles. Efforts are to be made to put the results of the  seminar into good use. The assembling work of motor vehicles is at its embryonic stage. All-out efforts are  to be made for the development of industries. At the same time, importance is to be attached to the  manufacturing of farming equipment. The government will provide assistance to
industrialists.


(6) Secretary-2 inspects livestock breeding work in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 29 Oct-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo accompanied
by officials inspected AA Strain Poultry Farm at Anisakhan village-tract in PyinOoLwin Township yesterday afternoon. Officials reported to Secretary-2 on the work of the farm. The farm distributes about  40,000 chicks every five days. Secretary-2 and party inspected Nadaungkya bridge extension
project on  Mandalay-PyinOoLwin Road on their way back to Mandalay in the evening and left necessary instructions  there.

Then, Secretary-2 and party proceeded to poultry farm of Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise in Patheingyi Township where they inspected poultry farming. At the briefing hall, Manager U  Than Win of the farm reported to the Secretary-2 on keeping of RIR Lohnanr and other strains,
condition  of incubators and distribution of the chicks. Managing Director U Khin Aye gave a supplementary report  on sale of eggs and chicken meat. Then, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung  Thein elaborated on systematic breeding of RIR hens at the farm and the
Secretary-2 gave necessary  instructions.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected fish breeding farm No 3 of Mandalay Division Fisheries Department  in Amarapura Township this afternoon. Acting Division Staff Officer of Mandalay Division Fisheries  Department reported to the Secretary-2 on location of fish breeding ponds, fish breeding work and  distribution of fish fry for breeding. Then, Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein explained releasing of 90  million fish fry into the rivers such as Ayeyawady and Chindwin to increase the number
of fish in the  rivers.

The Secretary-2 gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, they inspected fish strains, which are being distributed, and fish breeding ponds. Later, the Secretary-2 and party proceeded to Mandalay International  Airport, left Mandalay for Yangon by Tatmadaw aircraft and arrived back here this afternoon. Deputy  Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and officials inspected Myanmar Police Force  Training Centre in PyinOoLwin this morning.


(7) Myanmar delegation leaves for ROK

YANGON, 29 Oct- At the invitation of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Commerce Mr Han Duck Soo, a Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone left here for the Republic of Korea by air this evening. The Myanmar delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for  Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister for
Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Ambassador of ROK Mr Chung Jung-Gum, departmental officials and families. The delegation includes Director-General U Nyunt Aye of Directorate of Trade and General Secretary of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Pyone Maung Maung.

Delegates arrive to attend ASEAN Ministerial Meeting

YANGON, 29 Oct-Deputy Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports of Cambodia Mr Nou Muth, delegates of Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Lao PDR, the Philippines and Vietnam and the ASEAN Secretariat arrived here by air to attend the Third ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Youth hosted
by Myanmar for the first time from 30 October to 2 November. The delegates were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by officials of the Reception and Accommodation Sub-committee for the Meeting.


(8) Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin arrives back

YANGON, 29 Oct-A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, who attended the 22nd ASEAN Ministers of Agriculture and Forestry Conference held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on 26-27 October, arrived back here yesterday evening. They were welcomed back by
Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U  Ohn Myint, Ambassador of Cambodia to Myanmar Mr Nim Chan Tara and staff from the embassy and  officials at the airport. Acting Director-General U Tin Htut Oo of Agriculture Planning Department and  officials, who attended the Preliminary Meeting of the Senior Officers held on 23 October also arrived  back on the same flight with the Minister.


(9) Commander attends opening of Golden Triangle Friendship Trade Fair '2000

YANGON, 29 Oct-Under the supervision of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council and with the assistance of the Ministry of Commerce, the opening ceremony of the Golden Triangle Friendship Trade Fair '2000 sponsored by Regina International Co Ltd was held at the Regina Shan Yoma
Department Store in Tachilek on 27 October morning.

Over 9,000 people including Chairman of Shan State  (East) Peace and Development Council Commander of Triangle Region Command Maj-Gen Thein Sein,  Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Brig-Gen Than Aung of Mongphyat Station and  senior military officers, Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand Minister of Health Mr Korn Thaparangsri and  delegates, Chairman Mr Xia Li Huang of Chamber of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and  delegates, Chairman Mr Sommai Phetcharoen of Federation of Chamber of
Commerce of the Lao  People's Democratic Republic and delegates, chairmen of Tachilek and Kengtung District Peace and  Development Councils, departmental officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association,  Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Maternal and Child Welfare
Association, Red Cross and  Auxiliary Fire Brigades, entrepreneurs from Myanmar, China, Laos and Thailand, guests and local people  attended the occasion.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein extended greetings and Chairman Ms Lxana of Regina International Co Ltd explained matters related to the trade fair. Then, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Mr Xia Li Huang of China, Mr Sommai Phetcharoen of Laos and Deputy Prime Minister Mr Korn Thaparangsri of Thailand extended greetings and formally opened the trade fair.

Commander Maj-Gen Thein Sein pressed  the button to open the signboard of the trade fair. Students and members of local cultural troupes  entertained the attendance with dances and songs. Afterwards, the Commander and delegates looked  around the trade fair. The trade fair will be held up to 5 November.


(10) 38 Dedaye Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 29 Oct-Thirty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Dedaye Township, Ayeyawady Division. Thirty-eight members of Dedaye Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division,  of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Dedaye Township
Multiparty Democracy  General Election Sub-committee and the party concerned on 22 September 2000 as they no longer wished  to participate in party politics of NLD.
