(1) Senior General Than Shwe calls for setting up more farms in surrounding areas of Yangon Inspects agriculture projects, regional development tasks in Taikkyi, Htantabin Townships
YANGON, 27 Oct -Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected agriculture projects at Uto-Kya-in region in Taikkyi Township and development tasks at Aingkalaung Kyun region and Bawle Kyun region in Htantabin Township in Yangon Division today.At the recreation centre of the project, the Senior General heard a report on the location of the farms, livestock breeding and agricultural work being undertaken at the farms, reclamation of land to put up to 10,000 acres under paddy at Uto-Kya-in region, efforts for ensuring water supply for cultivation purpose, cultivation of edible crops including sesame and sunflower, the situation of fish breeding and regional development tasks and plans to upgrade education and transport sectors presented by Mayor U Ko Lay. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than also presented an additional report.
Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance, saying as Uto-Kya-in region is the main place supplying livestock products and agricultural produce to Yangon City, it is required to conduct fish and poultry farming in the area in addition to paddy cultivation. With regard to running farming business, more priority should be given to fulfilling the food needs of the people of Yangon than to gaining economic benefits and penetrating markets.
The building of rural development roads, the ensuring of water for crops and dissemination of agricultural techniques will lead to harmonious progress of the rural areas and uplift of the living standard of the people.
It is required for the Rice, Vegetable and Fruit Research Department of YCDC to carry out research on production of quality strains of high-yield early maturing paddy which is resistant to pest and weather. Efforts should be made to increase the yield of sesame and to extend cultivation of sunflower and corn.
A feasible study should be conducted at Bawle and Aingkalaung regions to set up new private farms. The setting up of more farms in the surrounding areas of the city will reduce production and transport cost and will ensure a direct distribution system, leading to bringing down food prices.
The Senior General and party then inspected thriving paddy fields, fish farms and land reclamation tasks of YCDC at Uto-Kya-in region.
At the Central Station (Uto), the Senior General and party inspected construction of the building for the Rice, Vegetable and Fruit Research Department of YCDC. Mayor U Ko Lay and officials explained salient points of the project. Later, they inspected the new Shwewahtun Hall at City Golf Course and Recreation Centre and fry breeding ponds and functions of the fish hatchery.
At the 25-ton rice mill of YCDC, they inspected rice milling and paddy dryers. The mill is located on the production road between Uto and Kya-in. Afterwards, they inspected Uto-Iwate- Tawlati-Yebawthaung-Kyokon-Myochaung-Hmawby Road in a motorcade. The road was built for progress of Thaikkyi and Htantabin Townships.
During his inspection of Thabyedan, Water-Pumping Station Project in Taikkyi Township in Yangon Division, the Senior General heard a report on points of the Thabyedan Water-Pumping Station Project, which will irrigate 5,000 acres, Yebawthaung Water-Pumping Station Project, which will irrigate 3,000 acres, and Kyokon Water-Pumping Station Project, which will irrigate 5,000 acres, presented by Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Director-General of Water Resources Utilization Department U Hla Myint Maung and officials.
After inspecting Bawle River Bridge (Yebawthaung) linking Aingkalaung Kyun region in Taikkyi Township and Bawle Kyun region in Htantabin Township, the Senior General and party observed the digging of feeder canals. The bridge was commissioned into service on 17 October. At the Kyokon Water-Yumping Station Project, Director-General of WRUD U Win Shwe briefed them on points of the project and plans to supply water for cultivation.
Senior General Than Shwe stressed the need to strive for early completion of the project. The Senior General and party then inspected Hline River Bridge (Myochaung) linking Htantabin and Hmawby Townships.
(2) Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions continues
YANGON, 27 Oct- The Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions continued for the second day at the four designated venues here today.

Secretary-l attends second day events of Performing Arts Competitions
YANGON, 27 Oct-Patron of Organizing the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the second day events of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions at the respective venues today. The Secretary- I and party watched men's individual contest of the professional level saingwaing competition . They also attended institutions of higher learning level men's religious song competition at the National Museum and girls' basic education level (age 5-10) competition at the National Theatre. The Secretary- I cordially greeted the participants of the dance competition.
Secretary-l views Mahothada Drama Competition
YANGON, 27 Oct- The Mahothada Drama Competition of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street in Dagon Township at 7 p.m. today, attended by Patron of Organizing Committee - for the Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Sagaing Division Mahothada drama troupe took part in the competition.
(3) Ministers on Inspection Tour
Minister inspects Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) Project
YANGON, 27 Oct-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with officials of Public Works and superintending engineers, arrived at Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) Project in Magway on yesterday morning. The minister and party inspected construction work on Magway bank. Superintending Engineer U Han Zaw reported on tasks to be undertaken and progress of piling work.
The minister gave instructions on work site safety, taking precautionary measures to avoid accidents and erecting warning signboards along the waterway. Then, the minister and party inspected construction work on the bank of Minebea.
Spanning the Ayeyawady River the bridge will link Magway and Minebea. Its total length is 8,989 feet. The main structure is 6,969 feet long, the approach structure on Magway bank 1,075 feet long and the approach structure on Minebea bank 945 feet long. The bridge will be built with reinforced concrete. It will have a 28-foot-wide motorway and two six-foot-wide pedestrian lanes, and can withstand 60-ton loads.
Minister inspects Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory
YANGON, 27 Oct- Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thong, accompanied by officials, met officials of Myanmar Pharmaceutical Factory of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries in West Gyogone Ward, Insein Township, this morning,.
At the briefing hall, Factory Manager U Zaw Win reported to the minister on production and distribution of medicine of the factory. Managing Director of MPI U Myint Oo presented a supplementary report. Minister U Aung Thaung gave necessary instructions to them. Then, Minister U Aung Thaung inspected scale model of the factory and gave suggestions on repair of the factory. The minister inspected production of pills, ointment and injection at the factory and gave instructions to officials.
Deputy Minister inspects Shwedaung Garment Factory, Thayet Cement PlantYANGON, 27 Oct-Deputy Minister for Industry-l Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, accompanied by officials, inspected the High Grade Garment and Finishing Factory in Shwedaung on 23 October afternoon. The deputy minister heard reports by the officials and attended to their needs.
Then, the deputy minister arrived at Thayet Cement Plant No I on 24 October. At the briefing hall, he gave instructions to the officials on tasks to be carried out for industrial development, exceeding the targets, improving quality of products, minimizing wastage, mobilizing skilled workers and upgrading of technology.
Afterwards, he inspected the work site of limestone production and left instructions on systematic use of machinery. On 25 October, the deputy minister inspected production work of Thayet Cement Plant No 1 and fulfilled the requirements.
Deputy Minister for Home Affairs tours Sagaing, Mandalay Divisions
YANGON, 27 Oct -Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, together with officials, toured Sagaing and Mandalay Divisions and inspected departmental work from 23 to 26 October.
The deputy minister and party visited police stations and district and township general administration departments in Ngazun, Mandalay Division, on 23 October, in Sagaing, ChaungU and Yesagyo on 24 October, in Myingyan on 25 October. and in Natogyi and Kyaukse on 26 October.
The deputy minister presented a computer to Yesagyo Township Union Solidarity and Development Association on 24 October. He also gave instructions to departmental employees, executives of USDA and officials of Township War Veterans Organization. He spoke of the need for ,police members to prevent danger of criminals and thieves in order to ensure that the people can live in a sense of security and that there are peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order in the community.
He also called on government employees to actively and honestly work for the regional development, to get rid of the bad habits left by the colonialists, to work for the welfare of the people, to participate in the tasks for the development of the nation in response to the goodwill of the State and to keep a weather eye on activities of destructive groups relying on external elements.
Courses of MPT conclude
YANGON, 27 Oct- SS Cable Construction and Maintenance -Course, PABX Course, Introduction to Data Communication Course, and Mobile Communication Course concluded at the Telecommunication and Postal Service Training School of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this morning, with an address by Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin said that when building a prosperous and developed nation in accord with the guidance of the Head of State, MPT plays a key role in obtaining the State's funds and it also serves the public with postal, telegraph and telephone services and to effectively carry out the work it depends on the quality of staff concerned. In order to improve the quality of the staff courses and refresher courses on communications are being conducted yearly under the arrangement of training programmes for 2000 2001 in accord with requirements.
In conclusion, the minister urged the trainees to serve the interests of the people all the more by combining theory and practice when' they assume their duties again.
Then, the minister and officials of MPT presented certificates and prizes to trainees and outstanding trainees.
Course No 1/2000 in Diplomatic Skills for Senior Officers concludes
YANGON, 27 Oct-The Course No 1/2000 in Diplomatic Skills for Senior Officers, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded at Shin Ditha Pamauk Hall of the ministry this morning.
Present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, retired Myanmar ambassadors, veteran diplomats, rectors and professors, departmental officials, instructors and trainees. - Minister U Win Aung gave a speech and presented certificates to trainees. Altogether 36 senior officers of the minister attended the eight-week course.
Ministry of Cooperatives holds Kahtina robe offering ceremonyYANGON, 27 Oct- The 18th Kahtina robe offering ceremony of Ministry of Cooperatives and cooperative syndicate and cooperative associations was held at the Dhammayon of the ministry on Gyatawya Street in Bahan Township this morning.
Present were Aungthawady Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sundra and members of the Sangha, the directors-general, the managing directors, chairmen of cooperatives associations, principals of cooperatives colleges, departmental officials, members of Board of Directors of cooperatives associations, staff families and guests.
Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San and party received the Nine Precepts from Sayadaw U Dhamica.Minister U Aung San and departmental officials 'presented Kahtina robes to members of the sangha. Then, members of the, sangha recited parittas. Minister U Aung San and party shared the merits. The minister and party offered soon to members of the sangha.
New school building handed over to Insein BEPS No 15
YANGON, 27 Oct-A ceremony to hand over and open a new school building to Basic Education Primary School No 15 Insein Township, was held at the building yesterday morning.
It was attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, directors-general and chairmen of departments, board and commissions, Deputy Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon) U Tin Win and departmental heads, donor Managing Director U Zaw Tun of Suntac International Trading Co Ltd and officials.
At first, Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Maung Maung Myint Aye explained the purpose of the donation. Then, Managing Director U Zaw Tun handed over the documents related to the building to Deputy Director-General U Tin Win.
Afterwards, Minister U Than Aung presented teaching aids to Principal of the School Daw Aye Thein. The principal and Managing Director U Zaw Tun formally opened the new building. Later, Minister U Than Aung and guests inspected the building.
The Suntac International Trading Co Ltd spent K 3,961,340 for the building and Taw Win Co also contributed desks and chairs worth K 493,500.
Ministry of Hotels and Tourism holds communal Kathina ceremonyYANGON, 27 Oct-The Ministry of Hotels and Tourism held the eighth communal Kathina ceremony at the Dhammayon of the ministry on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.
Present were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chair man's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and wife, officials and staff.
Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Maha Aungmye Bonsan Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Pannindabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.
Then, ministers, the deputy minister and officials donated Kathina robes and provisions to Sayadaws.
Myanmar delegation arrives back from PRC
YANGON, 27 Oct-The four-member Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe arrived back here by air yesterday evening after attending High Grade Meeting on Human Settlement in Asia and Pacific Region held in Hangzhou from 19 to 23 October. The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Managing Director of Public Works U Nay Soe Naing, Director General of Department of Human
Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw, departmental heads and officials of Ministry of Construction and family members. The members of the delegation-Director (Civil)'of Civil and Regional Planning Division of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Win Myint, Chairman of Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs' Association U Khin Shwe and CEC member U Than Myint also arrived back on the same flight.
Deputy Minister inspects banks, departments of Ministry of Finance and Revenue in Kayan, Thongwa, Thanlyin
YANGON, 27 Oct- Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, accompanied by officials, arrived at Kayan yesterday.
At Byamaso Hall of the township, the deputy minister met officials of Myanma Economic Bank, Internal Revenue Department and Myanma Small Loans Enterprise. In Thongwa, the deputy minister inspected Myanma Economic Bank and Internal Revenue Department. He also inspected departments under the ministry in Thanlyin and met service personnel there.
(5) Third Myanma Tourism Exhibition-held in Bangkok. Thailand
YANGON, 27 Oct-Third Myanma Tourism Exhibition sponsored by Ministry of Hotels and Tourism was opened at Baiyoke Sky Hotel in Bangkok on 16 October. At the opening ceremony Chairman of Thai Tourism Authority Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Dr Adisai Bodharamik made a speech. Myanmar Ambassador to Thailand U Hla Maung elaborated on matters relating to tourist destinations in Myanmar and Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Ministry of Hotels and Tourism extended greetings.
Also present were entrepreneurs of tourism industry in Thailand, hoteliers, business men, researchers of universities, journalists and exhibitors from Myanmar. At the exhibition 30 travels and tours companies, three airways and Directorate of Hotels and Tourism of Myanmar participated. Before the opening of the exhibition, Myanmar delegation led by Director-General U Khin Maung Latt held a press conference on tourism promotion of Myanmar. It was attended by correspondents from newspapers, magazines and news agencies in Thailand.
(6) Commander attends prize presentation ceremony of Body Building and Physical Culture Contest of Shan State (North)
YANGON, 27 Oct-The opening and prize presentation ceremony of Body Building and Physical Culture Contest of Shan State (North) was held at Lashio Town Hall in Lashio on 25 October evening.
Present-were Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, patron of Shan State (North) Committee for Women's Affairs Daw Khin Saw Hnin, wife of the Commander, Secretary of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Lt.-Col Win Han, staff officers, commanding officers, chairmen of Lashio District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of Shan State (North) Committee for Women's Affairs, members of traditional culture troupe, competitors and guests.
Chairman of Shan State (North) Committee for Women's Affairs U Sein Oak formally opened the competitions.
Naing Win Oo and Ma Nang Thandar Hlaing won the first prizes in the bodybuilding event and physical culture event respectively. After the competitions, the commander and wife presented prizes to winners.
(7) Commander inspects construction of bridge and road
YANGON, 27 Oct -Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt.-Col Thein Hlaing and departmental officials, inspected Shweli River Bridge (Ngaoh) Project on 25 October morning.
Senior Engineer of Public Works U Win Kyi reported on the design of the bridge and arrangements for construction work. Then, the commander inspected piling work on the banks of Bhamo and Mandalay and the laying of stones between Mile Posts No 70 and 70/7 on Tagaung-Ngaoh Section The commander and party then went to Phonggon Village, Tagaung Villagetract, Thabeikkyin Township, and inspected cultivation of paddy on the four-acre fields of farmer U Maung Waing and cultivation of long-staple cotton on the 35-acre fields of farmer U Khin Maung Nyo.
Afterwards, the commander inspected cultivation of Pesinngon on the 103 acres of reclaimed land at Magyigon region and the growing of teak trees on both sides of Thabeikkyin-Tagaung Road. Later, the commander and party inspected construction work for extension of Mandalay-Mogok Road in Thabeikkyin Township.
(8) C-in C of Defence Services' Shield Tatmadaw Cycling Tournament ends
YANGON, 27 Oct- The prize presentation ceremony for the Seventh Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services' Shield Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Cycling Tournament was held at Thuwunna Sports Ground this morning.
On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Commander of Mingaladon Air Base Brig-Gen Thein Myint gave an opening address.
In the final matches, Kyaw Myo Hlaing of Eastern Command was first, Win Hlaing of Yangon Command second and Sai Myat of Yangon Command third in the 4,000-metre individual event; Yangon Command was first, South-West Command second and No 11 LID third in the 4,000-metre team event, and Kyaw Thu Aung of No 11 LID was first, Maung Maung Nay Yu of Yangon Command second and Than Htay Oo of the Commander-in-Chief (Navy)'s Office third in the 1 0-km individual event.
Kyaw Myo Hlaing of Eastern Command won the best cyclist award. After the matches, officials presented prizes to the winners. On behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Commander of Mingaladon Air Base Brig-Gen Thein Myint presented championship shield to Yangon Command team.
(9) 19,925 stimulant tablets seized in Taunggyi
YANGON, 2 7 Oct-At 1.15 p.m. on 16 February 2000, members of local intelligence unit, Taunggyi Special Anti-drug Squad and local Myanmar Police Force members, acting on information, searched the house at Nya/538 on Yadana 4th lane in Nyaungphyu Sakhan Ward in Taunggyi Township, They nabbed Aik Nwe, Hsai Lin, Sai Han Tun-and Aung Min Oo with 19,925 WY brand stimulant tablets in the knapsack.
Taunggyi No 2 Police Station filed Aik Nwe (a) Naung Kham (a) Kyaw Myint Htoo, 29, son of U Walm of NyalS38 on Yadana 4th lane in Nyaungphyu Sakhan Ward, Hsai Lin, 43, son of U Kanda of 15, Mingala Street, Kantha Ward, Sai Han Tun, 34, son of U Sai Mya Ohn of 124, Thiri Mingala Street, Yayegwin Ward and Aung Min Oo (a) Aung Lin Oo, 30, son of U Ba Thein of Nya/1309, Hninsi Street, Nyaungphyu Sakhan Ward of Taunggyi Township
Under the Sections 15/ 19 (A)/ 21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. On I September 2000, Taunggyi District Court sentenced Aik Nwe . (a) Naungkharn (a) Kyaw Myint Htoo and Aung Min Oo (a) Aung Lin Oo to 5 years' imprisonment each under the Section 15 and 20 years' each under the Sections 19 (A)/ 21 to serve separately; Hsai Lin and Sai Han Tun to 20 years' each under the Sections 19 (A)/21.
(10) 7 Shwedaung Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 27 Oct-Seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Shwedaung Township, Bago Division. Seven members of Shwedaung Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwedaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 26 September 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
