(2) Meat production and consumption improved in ten years Eighth Conference of Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association commences

YANGON, 23 Oct - The Eighth Conference of Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association was opened at the Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this afternoon with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Chairman of Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association Dr Pe Tin, executives and members and guests.

The Secretary-1 said that at a time when efforts are being made to build a modern and developed nation, the association of veterinary surgeons who are having a part in a task for development of the State, has emerged, and it is an encouraging sign for the future.

The activities of Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association, which has been formed since 1974, came to a stop after 1982. In the time of the present government, encouragement has been given to the emergence of a national force comprising veterinary surgeons on whom the State can rely. So Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association has emerged again. In accord with its objectives to disseminate and develop modern veterinary science and livestock breeding methods and to serve national interests, the association, as a united and active national force, is working for the interests of the State and the people. Today veterinary surgeons are not only attending to the needs of health of animals but also working for the control of animal diseases, elimination of some contagious diseases and prevention of spread of new kinds of diseases from abroad.

The association is taking measures to improve livestock breeding and production work, to breed good strains of animals, to preserve rare species of animals, to produce feedstuff and veterinary medicines of high quality, to produce meat, fish and dairy products, to inspect such products as meat, milk and eggs to make sure that these products are fit for human consumption, to inspect import and export of animals, products and feedstuff to make sure that they are free from diseases, to prevent outbreak of animal diseases and to conduct research on veterinary medicines and livestock breeding.

In view of public consumption, it is found that production work of the fish and meat sector of the State has been improving in the second five-year plan from 1996-97 to 2000-2001. After the second five-year plan, Meat production has increased from 7.6 percent to 13.4 percent, milk production from 1.3 percent to 8.3 percent and egg production from 6 percent to 16.3 percent. Ten years ago, the average annual food consumption per man was 2.6 viss of meat, 7.8 viss of milk and 20 eggs. Now, it is 4.6 viss of meat, 8.3 viss of milk and 37 eggs.

Animal resources such as cattle, goats, pigs, chickens and ducks have increased year after year. The improvement of production and human consumption of meat can be attributed to the government's encouragement to livestock breeding and production work, systematic management for dissemination of modern livestock breeding methods and efforts of veterinary surgeons who provide expert advice, services and technical assistance.

It is found that veterinary surgeons can effectively carry out technical work such as prevention of outbreak of animal diseases and inspection of meat and milk for human consumption. The National Medicine Law enacted by the State to ensure that the people can consume food and take medicines with trust, covers veterinary medicines. Food and drug administration committees have been set up at township, district and state/division levels, and veterinary surgeons are also on these committees, and duties have been assigned to them. It is found that veterinary surgeons are working for various ministries and governmental organizations to develop livestock breeding work, to control animal diseases and to contribute to public health care, and some are also engaged in distributing young animals, carrying out modern livestock breeding work and distributing and trading feedstuff and veterinary medicines.

Veterinary surgeons who are engaged in veterinary and husbandry tasks should strive to develop the veterinary and husbandry science and their skills. The government is conducting such courses as M.Sc., M.V.Sc. and M.Phil. and sending veterinary surgeons abroad to attend M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses in promoting their qualifications to meet the international standard and in producing brilliant veterinary surgeons.

It is believed that Myanmar veterinary surgeons who are imbued with international experiences and veterinary science can prevent spreading of animal cancer in Myanmar; animals in some countries are stricken with cancer which can also harm the human beings.

At present, the government is establishing farming zones, disbursing loans, rendering necessary assistance to produce quality animal strains, feedstuff and potent animal medicines and disseminating farming techniques among the people in promoting the livestock sector.

Beginning 15 October, USDA members and trainees who had completed farming courses are giving optical vaccine to chicken of the rural areas on a national scale. They are launching the project thrice a year; each time giving the drop to over 20 million chicks; thus 60 million chicks will be given the optical vaccine annually to prevent occurring of infectious diseases among the chicks. The project will not only develop the livestock sector but also the socio-economic life of the rural people. At a time when efforts are being made to promote the economic and social status of the people, the veterinary surgeons should uphold the conviction that their role is becoming more important and has reached the stage of realizing the national economic benefits. Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association had been founded for the unity of the veterinary surgeons; and members of the association should make efforts to enable the association to become a national force effectively benefiting the nation-building tasks. In accord with its aims, the association is leading and organizing the veterinary surgeons, distributing journals and leaflets on the science and holding research paper reading sessions and talks for the benefit of the veterinary surgeons.

All the association members should harmoniously strive for the association to always stand as a body serving the interest of the veterinary surgeons.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged the veterinary surgeons to strive from the respective sectors for the emergence of a peaceful, stable, modern and developed nation; to render assistance to the livestock breeders in order to promote the meat production sector, farm produce and farming techniques of the nation; to successfully implement the tasks relating to public health care aiming at uplifting the health and fitness of the entire national people; to strive to be able to stand as veterinary surgeons uplifting the dignity of the nation, the people and the association; to strive for promoting the national interest in accord with the motto "to build nation through farming and veterinary science". Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and Chairman of the association Dr Pe Tin formally opened the exhibition hailing the conference. The Secretary-1 and party then visited the booths of the exhibition.
