(1) Monks, devotees and tourists throng Mindhamma HillYANGON, 22 Oct - Members of the Sangha, Buddhist devotees and tourists crowded Mindhamma Hill, where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image will be kept for public obeisance, on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township today. Engineers and physical and intellectual workers of the Public Works are building Gandakutitaik, the retaining wall to the south of Mindhamma Hill and the northern stairways. At Mindhamma Hill, the News and Periodicals Enterprise under the Ministry of Information and Sarpay Beikman have opened bookshops. Wut associations recited religious verses from 7 am to 10 p.m. Donations received for the fund of the Image totaled K 83,867,408.
(2) Secretary-1 inspects development projects in Mon State, attends opening ceremonies of multimedia teaching centres
YANGON, 22 Oct - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected development projects in Mon State on 20 and 21 October. Accompanied by the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council and departmental heads, the Secretary-1 left Yangon by Tatmadaw flight on 20 October and arrived in Mawlamyine, Mon State at 2 p.m.
The Secretary-1 and party attended the inauguration ceremony of Mawlamyine Traditional Medicine Hospital. They proceeded to the Thanlwin Bridge (Mawla-myine) Project on Mawla-myine side and inspected the scale model of the bridge in the project briefing hall. Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials of Public Works reported to the Secretary-1 on the salient points about the project, the conditions of the axis for construction of approach road on each bank, construction of the approach bridge structures, progress of work and future plans.
Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on the condition of waterway in Thanlwin River and Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than on the plans to build approach railroads, Mawlamyine Railway Station, locomotive shed and supporting stations. The Secretary-1 gave suggestions on construction of the bridge in accord with modern technology as targeted, and later inspected the axis for the bridge and construction of the approach road on Mawlamyine side.
Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine) is being built with pre-stressed concrete piers and steel beams, and a 14-foot-wide railroad with one 28-foot-wide motor road and five-foot-wide pedestrian lane on each side. The 10,580-foot-long bridge will have the safety waterway 328 feet wide and 46 feet high, and can withstand 60-ton loads.
Next, the Secretary-1 and party visited Mudon Win Sein Tawya Kyaung and paid obeisance to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kesara. The Secretary-1 donated K100,000 for construction of 600-foot-long reclining Buddha image, and accepted other cash donations .
After presenting offertories to the Sayadaw, the Secretary-1 and party inspected construction of a 600-foot-long reclining Buddha image on the precincts of Win Sein Tawya Kyaung. They stopped for the night in Mawlamyine.
Accompanied by Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, the Secretary-1 and party left Mawlamyine for Mudon yesterday morning. They attended the ceremony to offer seinphudaw (sacred diamond bud), Hngetmyatnadaw (sacred vane), Shwehtidaws (sacred gold umbrella), and shwekyar thingandaw (lotus gold robe) to historic Kangyi Pagoda in Mudon.
They later attended the opening ceremonies of the multi-media teaching centres at Mudon Basic Education High School No-1 and Mudon BEHS 2 respectively. The Secretary-1 made speeches at the opening ceremonies.
Also present at the opening ceremonies together with the Secretary-1 and party were departmental personnel, wellwishers, the Director-General of No-1 Basic Education Department and officials, the Township Education Officer, members of the School Boards of Trustees and PTAs, school heads, teachers and pupils.
The opening ceremony of multi-media teaching centres at Mudon BEHS 2 was held at the school at 9.35 a.m. Headmaster U Ohn Thaw and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees Dr Soe Myint Win formally opened them. Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard.
The Secretary-1 and party inspected computer application and e-mail, computer aided instruction, printed media (reading corner), electronic media (video system) language lab, domestic science and handicraft rooms and arts studio and observed skill demonstration of the students. The Secretary-1 and party had photo taken together with members of the School Board of Trustees, PTA, well wishers, the headmaster, teachers and students.
A multimedia teaching centre was opened at No 1 Basic Education High School in Mudon. Headmistress Daw Khin Lay and member of the School Board of Trustees U Maung Maung Thet formally opened the centre. The Secretary-1 formally unveiled the stone plaque of the centre. The Secretary-1 and party inspected computer application and e-mail, computer aided instruction, electronic media (video system) language lab, visual presenter, wall-display media, arts studio, domestic science and handicraft rooms, printed media (reading corner) and music room.
A ceremony to open multimedia teaching centres of No No 1 and No 2 Basic Education High Schools was also held at No 1 BEHS in Mudon. Township Education Officer U Saw Kwal Htoo said two multimedia teaching centres had been opened at No 1 and No 2 BEHSs due to close supervision of State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils and active participation of members of the School Board of Trustees and PTA, town elders and well-wishers.
Next, the Secretary-1 presented videotapes for the schools to Headmistress Daw Khin Lay. The Secretary-1 said it was an auspicious day for both Mon State and Mudon Township. Seinphudaw, Htidaw and Hngetmyatnadaw of Hsandaw-shin Kangyi Pagoda were hoisted in the morning and Shwethingan was also offered to the pagoda.
In conclusion, the Secretary-1 said that the government and the people are to cooperate in striving for the development of human resources who will lead the nation in future and emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation in the not-too-distant future.
After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party, together with members of the school board of trustees and the parent-teacher association, the well wishers, the headmaster and staff and students, posed for photos. Then, the Secretary-1 presented prizes to Ma Su Su Hlaing of No 1 Basic Education High School of Mudon who passed the matriculation examination with five distinctions, and tenth standard student Maung Win Hsan Aung who won six gold medals at the swimming contest of the disabled held in Malaysia.
Next, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Mudon People's Hospital. The Secretary-1 and party inspected the hospital. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to Chaungzon in Mon State.
The Secretary-1 met with district and township authorities, departmental officials and members of USDA and social organizations in Kyunthaya Hall, Chaungzon.
The Secretary-1 said that Bilugyun region in Chaungzon Township, Mon State, is famous in the nation for the development of cottage industries. In Bilugyun region, cottage industries have thrived and developed to such an extent that the quality of products of cottage industries from Bilugyun has reached the international standard.
In conclusion, the Secretary-1 called on departmental officials to strive for regional development and improvement of living standard of local people.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party viewed products of cottage industries such as wooden ball-point pens, pipes, walking sticks, rubber ware, plastic ware, slates and slate pencils. The Secretary-1 and party went to Sasana Beikman in Chaungzon, and paid homage to Sayadaws led by Taungbaw Laykyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vannobasa.
Then, they paid obeisance to marble Buddha images there. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party went to Koekhangyi Buddha Image in Chaungzon. The Secretary-1 signed in the visitors' book and made donations to the fund of the Buddha Image.
After that, the Secretary-1 attended the opening ceremony of the multimedia teaching centre of the basic education high school in Chaungzon, Mon State, in the evening.
Later, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the computer-aided instruction room, the e-mail and application room, the audio-visual media room, the printed and display media room, the language lab, the handicraft room, the science room and the music and arts room. The Secretary-1 presented videocassettes for the school to the headmistress.
The Secretary-1 and party left Chaungzon for Mawlamyine. They stopped for the night in Mawlamyine. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met members of Mon State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, and members of USDA and other social organizations in the Mon State Hall this morning.
In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the purpose of their inspection tour was to fulfil the requirements in implementing the development projects in Mawlamyine, Mudon and Chaungzon in Mon State. After assuming the State duties, the government has striven for stability, national economic development and improving social standard, and today, the nation has become stable with flourishing of economic and social structures.
Mon State, he said, has emerged anew today with highways and bridges, which could not be expected about 40 years back. In the past, there was no road linking Myeik with Kawthoung, and today, Myeik-Kawthoung Road has been built and is being improved, and similarly, Myeik-Dawei-Mawlamyine Road has been improved to become all-weather road. Soon, Kawthoung can be reached direct from Mawlamyine all the year round. Construction work has begun for the bridge linking Mottama with Mawlamyine, and it is to be the largest bridge in Myanmar. Priority is paid to building of bridges in Mon and Kayin States, and Hpa-an Bridge spanning Thanlwin River, Gyaing River Bridge and Kawkareik Bridge have been built.
As the government has built lots of roads and bridges all over the country, transportation has become smoother and more convenient. Also in the agriculture sector, many dams and irrigation networks have been put into service in endeavouring for national economic development based on agriculture.
The Secretary-1 said the government has been giving priority to human resources development for turning out well-versed intellectuals and intelligentsia in international technology in education, health and technology sectors and for emergence of a modern developed nation.
The Secretary-1 called for making harmonious efforts for development of the regions, raising of social standard of the people and consolidating of patriotism, the Union Spirit and national solidarity spirit.
The Secretary-1 and party went to Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda where they were welcomed by members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, service personnel, members of USDA, social association and members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.
The Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to the pagoda and offered Shwethingan to the pagoda. The Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to Sayadaw Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddana Panava and Ovadacariya Sayadaws of Pagoda Board of Trustees and presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. The Secretary-1 then donated cash. The Secretary-1 and party arrived back here in the evening.
(3) Secretary-1 attends ceremony to offer seinphudaw, Hngetmyatnardaw and shwekyar thingandaw to historic Kangyi Pagoda in Mudon
YANGON, 22 Oct - A ceremony to offer seinphu-daw (sacred diamond bud), Hngetmyatnardaw (sacred vane), shwehtidaw (sacred gold umbrella) and shwekyar thingandaw (lotus gold robe) to historic Kangyi Pagoda in Mudon, Mon State, and to gild the entire stupa was held at the pagoda yesterday morning. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and offered the seinphudaw and hngetmyatnadaw to the pagoda.
First, the Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to the sacred Buddha image. Afterwards, Secretary of the Committee for All-round Renovation of Kangyi Pagoda Chairman of Mudon Township Peace and Development Council U Aung Kyaw Soe explained to the Secretary-1 the work for all-round renovation of the pagoda.
At the auspicious time, the ceremony commenced with Assistant Director U Tun Shwe of Religious Affairs Department acting as master of ceremonies. The ceremony was opened with three-time recitation of the gatha starting with Namotassa. Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Mawlamyine Sasana Theikpan Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Suriyabhivamsa invested the congregation with the Nine Precepts. Afterwards, the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas. Secretary of the Committee for All-round Renovation of Kangyi Pagoda Chairman of Mudon Township Peace and Development Council U Aung Kyaw Soe supplicated on all-round renovation of the pagoda.
Next, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung and ministers offered to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha the seinphudaw, hngetmyatnadaw, the gold replica of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the gold bell and shwekyar thingandaw.
They later presented offertories to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. Member of the Central Working Committee of the Sangha Mawlamyine Kawhla Kyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Obhasa delivered a sermon. The first part of the auspicious ceremony ended with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party and well wishers sharing merits for the pious deeds done.
Afterwards, the ceremony to hoist seinphudaw and hngetmyatnadaw atop the stupa continued. Flanked by the troupes of those holding religious banners and those dressed in the attires of Devas and Rajas, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers, departmental heads, members of Mon State, District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of USDA, other social organizations and religious organizations and well-wishers conveyed seinphudaw, hngetmyatnadaw and shwekyar thingandaw round the pagoda clockwise on the platform for public obeisance.
They then conveyed the sacred objects onto the decorated cable carriage to hoist them atop the pagoda. Later, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers, departmental heads, Secretary-1 attends ceremony members of USDA and other social organizations, and wellwishers pulled the rope together to convey the seinphudaw, hngetmyatnadaw, Sasana aunglandaw and shwekyar thingandaw atop the stupa by cable carriage.
Meanwhile, Mingala royal drum music was played, and Dhamma songs sung to the strains of the saingwaingdaw troupe. At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party offered the seinphudaw, hngetmyatnadaw, sasana aunglandaw and shwekyar thingandaw to the historic Buddha Hsandawshin Kangyi Pagoda. At the same time, Sayadaws and members of the Sangha, and devotees recited the gatha started with jayanto bodhiyamule three times. Staff Officer U Thura of the Religious Affairs Department read out the paper sharing merits. The ceremony ended with the three-time recitation of buddha sasanam ciram tithatu. After that, Secretary-1 and party showered gold and silver confetti to mark the successful conclusion of the ceremony. U Win Kyi-Daw Hla Tun and family of Mingala Street, Peinneitaik Ward, Mudon, presented a Sunny pick-up for use in religious tasks of the pagoda.
(4) Secretary-1 inspects preparations for Eighth Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts competitions
YANGON, 22 Oct-Patron of the Committee for Organizing Eighth Myanmar Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this evening inspected Padonma Theatre, National Theater and National Museum where singing, dancing, com- posing and music contests will be held.
Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the Office of the State. Peace and Development Council, arrived at Padonma Theatre where music contest will be held. The Secretary-1 and party proceeded to National Museum where singing contests will be held and National Theatre where dancing contests will be held and also inspected preparations for com- petitions and then left necessary instructions.
(5) New traditional medicine hospital opens in Mawlamyine
YANGON, 22 Oct-The Traditional Medicine Department of the Ministry of Health opened a new Traditional medicine hospital in Mawlamyine, Mon State, on 20 October.
Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard of the new traditional hospital. Director-General of the Traditional Medicine Department Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun presented a Commemorative pennant to the Secretary-l .
Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung and Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein formally opened the new traditional medicine hospital. Then, the. Secretary-l and party and guests inspected the hospital. Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, members of Mon State Peace and Development Council, district and township authorities, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations, teachers and students, officials of the Traditional Medicine Department and guests.
(6) Myanmar Women's Development Centre (Wingaba) presents awards to outstanding trainees
YANGON, 22 Oct - Myanmar Women's Development Centre (Wingaba) held an award-presenting ceremony in conjunction with a cash-donation ceremony at the Centre on Wingaba Street in Bahan Township today. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the ceremony.
Also present were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and departmental officials, well wishers, Chairperson Daw Nyunt Nyunt Khin of MWDC and executives, trainees and guests.
Chairperson Daw Nyunt Nyunt Khin extended greetings. Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa made a speech. The Secretary-2 presented first, second and third outstanding performance awards for 1999 of MWDC (Wingaba) to Ma Aung Awel, Ma Soe Soe and Ma Thida Win respectively.
Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa presented cash awards to Chin national Ma Aung Awel who passed the 2000 matriculation examination with four distinctions and Kayin national Ma Yamin Ei who passed the examination with one distinction.
Daw Hse (Ngwe Hse Company) also presented K 10,000 to Ma Aung Awel and K 3,000 to Ma Yamin Ei.Vice-Chairperson of MWDC (Wingaba) Daw Myint Kyi reported on progress of construction work of the retaining wall at the Centre and the acquisition of cash donations. Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa reported on assistance being provided by YCDC for the Centre.
Then, the Secretary-2 thanked well wishers for their contribution to education, health and social development tasks of the Centre. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 accepted donations for construction of the retaining wall at the Centre K 5 million each by YCDC, Vice-Chairman of Asia Wealth Bank U Aik Tun and Agga Maha Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Daw Hse (Ngwe Hse Company). The well wishers also donated K 18.2 million. The ministers and officials accepted the donations. Agga Maha Thiri Thudhamma Theingi Daw Hse (Ngwe Hse Company) presented women longyis worth K 30,000 for trainees of the Centre.
(7) Provisions donated to monasteries in Bahan Township
YANGON, 22 Oct-The families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and wellwishers donated rice, edible oil, salt, medicines and cash to Maha Withuddayon Pali Tekkatho Sarthintaik and Kyaungdawya Shwekyin Sarthintaik in Bahan Township, Yangon West District, at Maha Withuddayon Pali Tekkatho Sarthintaik this morning. Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the ceremony.
Padana Nayaka of Maha Vithuddayon Pali Tekkatho Sarthintaik Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa administered the Five Precepts.
The Secretary-2 presented offertories to the Padana Nayaka Sayadaw, and officials and well wishers to the members of the Sangha. Deputy Adjutant-General of the Ministry of Defence Col Ye Tun, Captain Soe Thein (Navy) and Maj-Gen Myint Swe presented rice donated by the Tatmadaw families, to the Padana Nayaka Sayadaw.
Then, Yangon City Development Committee, the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs, Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Yangon West District and Bahan Township Peace and Development Councils, departments and wellwishers presented 110 bags of rice, 20 viss of edible oil, 250 viss of iodized salt, 25 tubes of soft salt and 965 bottles of traditional medicines to the Padana Nayaka Sayadaws.
Afterwards, associations, well-wishers, Township MCWA and Township Peace and Development Council presented K 461,000 for the funds of the Sarthintaiks to Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Captain Soe Thein (Navy), Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin and Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa. Director Brig-Gen Aung Thein of the Directorate of Resettlement explained the purpose of the donations. Later, Padana Nayaka of Pali Tekkatho Sarthintaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by the sharing of merits gained.

YANGON, 22 Oct-President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint and Central Executive Committee member U Tun Aung left here for Japan by air this evening to attend the Preliminary Meeting of Third Joint Meeting to be held in Tokyo. Win Thuza Shop opens in Myitkyina
YANGON, 22 Oct-Win Thuza Shop (Myitkyina) of the Ministry of Industry-l was opened at Leikpyataung Building in Myitkyina Market today.
The opening ceremony was attended by Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung and members of other organizations. Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win formally unveiled the signboard, and Managing Director of Myanma Ceramic Industries U Than Shwe and Chairman of Myitkyina District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Hla Thaung formally opened it.
Afterwards, Managing Director U Than Shwe spoke of the purpose of opening the shop. In commemoration of opening the store in Myitkyina, Managing Director presented K 30,000 each to Kachin State USDA, Kachin-State MCWA and No 3 Basic Education High School. Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and Minister U Aung Thaung later met the executives of Myitkyina, Putao, Mohnyin and Mogoung Township USDAs at Myitkyina District USDA.
Reconstruction of ancient Kanbawzathadi Palace discussedYANGON, 22 Oct - A meeting on reconstruction of ancient Kanbawzathadi Palace in Bago was held in the meeting hall of the Ancient Cultural Heritage Region Office on 20 October. Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt addressed the meeting.
Officers of. Public Works and the Ancient Cultural Heritage Region Office reported on construction works, landscaping and preservation of ancient objects. The deputy minister later inspected ancient Kyaikkalunpun Pagoda and ancient objects excavated from the site near Kyaikpun Pagoda.
Minister inspects roads, bridges in Sagaing Divisions Kachin State
YANGON, 22 Oct-Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and officials inspected Shwebo-Myitkyina Road and bridges on the road on 19 October. The minister gave instructions on completion of work in time and minimizing loss and wastage.
The minister and party went to the site of Meza Bridge where officials concerned reported on construction of approach bridges on both sides of Shwebo and Myitkyina. The minister then gave instructions and fulfilled the requirements.
The Meza Bridge lies on Mandalay-Shwebo-Myitkyina Road and it is 225 feet long and 28 feet wide and it can withstand 60 tons of load. On 20 October, the minister and party inspected roads and bridges on Meza-Nan-Si Aung road. The minister also inspected Thayetchaung Bridge. On 21 October, the minister inspected roads and bridges on Hoping-Myitkyina Road and arrived at Myitkyina.
(9) 12 Haka NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 22 Oct-Twelve members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Haka Township, Chin State. Twelve members of Haka Township NLD, Chin State, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Haka Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 22 August 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
