(1) Secretary-2 views International IT Exhibition' 2000YANGON, 21 Oct-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo viewed the International IT Exhibition' 2000 sponsored by Myanmar Computer Scientist Association and Myanmar Computer Industry Association, being exhibited at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this morning. The officials of MCSA and MCIA presented an OKI-type laser printer for Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Computer Department to the Secretary-2. Then the Secretary-2 and party viewed the computer showrooms of various companies with interest for about an hour.
(2) Prizes presented to winners of Yangon Division Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts CompetitionsYANGON, 21 Oct - A ceremony to give away prizes to winners of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions of Yangon Division and to present a flag representing Yangon Division was held at No 2 Basic Education High School of Latha Township this afternoon.
Member of the Panel of Patrons of Organizing the 2000 Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions and Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Competitions member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and division-level departmental officials, district and township authorities, members of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions of Yangon Division, members of the panel of judges, officials of Myanmar Thabin Asiayon and Myanmar Music Asiayon, competitors, winners and guests.
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than presented the flag representing Yangon Division, to Secretary of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions of Yangon Division Major Kyaw Shin Htut.
Then, the commander said that Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions are held every year in order to get Myanmar youths to be familiar with, respect and cherish Myanma traditional culture and to enable them to understand and preserve Myanmar national character; in this regard, more and more success has been achieved. In organizing the competitions, arrangements have been made to ensure qualitative and quantitative improvement, and the quality of competitors is getting higher and higher.
The State Peace and Development Council has laid down six objectives for the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions to vitalize patriotism and nationalism in all citizens; to preserve and safeguard cultural heritage; to perpetuate genuine Myanmar music, dance and traditional fine arts; to preserve Myanmar national character; to nurture spiritual development of the youth; and, to prevent influence of alien cultures.
Altogether 534 competitors representing Yangon Division entered the Seventh Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions; a total of 152 prizes have been won Ñ 58 gold, 55 silver, 37 bronze and two special prizes. In conclusion, the commander urged competitors to try their utmost to win prizes at the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions.
Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife Daw Malar Tint, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Hsan Hsint, Commander of No 4 Military Region Command and Commandant of Defence Services Records Office Brig-Gen Myo Myint and officials presented prizes to winners of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions of Yangon Division. Then, the prize-winning artistes entertained the audience.
(3) News in BriefYangon Command Commander inspects vegetable, poultry farms at regional battalion in Pale Myothit
YANGON, 21 Oct - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected vegetable farms and poultry farms of the regional battalion in Pale Myothit today.
He was accompanied by staff officers of the Command. He arrived at the regional battalion at 4.30 p.m. Officiating Battalion Commander Maj Zaw Tun briefed him on cultivation of cashew on 20 acres, the growing of various vegetables on 20 acres by the battalion and families on self-reliance, cultivation of monsoon paddy on 150 acres, plans for cultivation of post-monsoon paddy on 30 acres, cultivation of 12,000 pine-apple plants, the breeding of 6,000 fowls for meat by the battalion, 30,000 fowls through joint-venture and 1,200 fowls on self-reliance, totalling over 37,200, the breeding of 5,000 fowls for eggs, 300 ducks, 50 goats and 60,000 fishes in the ponds on 10 acres.
The commander spoke of the need for the battalion to carry out agriculture and livestock breeding work systematically. He said the battalion should aim at selling the vegetables in Yangon so that Yangon people can buy fresh vegetables and fruits at reasonable prices.
As of the latest report, there are now over 1,200 acres of vegetable farms, over 400,000 fowls for eggs and 1.1 million fowls for meat. Chicken, eggs and vegetables are put on sale at the markets and the producers' tax-free markets in Yangon so that the people of Yangon can get fresh vegetables and farm products. Since the tax-free markets started in April, over 15,500 viss of chicken have been sold at K350 per viss, over 620,000 eggs at K10 per egg and various vegetables.
Myanmar delegation arrives back from PRC
YANGON, 21 Oct-The Myanmar delegation led by Attorney-General U Tha Tun, arrived back here by air this evening, after attending the Eighth World Conference on Crime Prevention in Asia Region held in Beijing, the People's Republic of China. The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Chinese Ambassador Mr Liang Dong, directors and the head of Office of the Chief Justice and officials and their family members. The members of the delegation Director-General of the Chief Justice's Office Dr Tun Shin, Shan State Law Officer U Aung Than Soe and Yangon Division Law Officer U Han Nyunt also arrived back on the same flight.
Tourism delegation arrives backYANGON, 21 Oct- The Myanmar delegation led by Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism arrived back here by air yesterday evening. They attended the Third Myanmar Travel Show, jointly organized by entrepreneurs of private hotels and tourism companies and airlines with the sponsorship of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, at Baiyoke Sky Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand. It was aimed at attracting more tourists from the tourism market of Thailand to Myanmar so as to develop Myanmar tourism industry. Members of the delegation' General Manager U Tin Htay, Directors Daw Nyunt Nyunt Than and Lt-Col Sein Pho, Deputy Director U Kaung Htut and branch in-charge Daw Khin May Oo also arrived back on the same flight. The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu and officials.
Minister inspects farms, road construction
YANGON, 21 Oct - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by officials of department, this morning inspected the vegetable farms of the ministry near Kyakansu Village in Hmawby Township and construction of Kyakansu-Ngahsudaung Road.
He first inspected the vegetable farms of the ministry. In the briefing hall, officials reported to the minister on construction of Kyakansu-Ngahsudaung Road and access roads linking one agricultural zone with another, and plans to reclaim 3,000 acres in the third agricultural zone. Later, he inspected construction of access roads linking one agricultural zone with another, cultivation and land reclamation work. He also gave instructions on allocation of land plots to the ministries, departments and private entrepreneurs willing to set up farms there. He next inspected construction work on the six-mile Kyakansu-Ngahsudaung Road section. Vegetables have been cultivated on 95 acres of the ministry's farms and it is targeted to grow crops on 200 acres. The vegetables and fruits of the farms are being put on sale at tax-free markets.
Dawei Cosmetics and Consumer Products Expo '2000 opensYANGON, 21 Oct - Dawei Cosmetics and Consumer Products Expo '2000, organized by Sun Business Group, was opened at the town hall of Dawei, Taninthayi Division, yesterday. Secretary of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Nyo and Director of Sun Business Group U Win Naing Oo formally opened the expo.
The expo is held with the aim of getting the public to know goods of international quality, enabling entrepreneurs from the coastal region to have direct access to modern technology for production of goods, to keep track of the systems of production and packaging of goods in foreign nations and produce new kinds of goods of international quality and ensuring favourable conditions for the market-oriented economic system. On display at the exhibition are local- and foreign-made textiles, articles of clothing, a wide range of cosmetics and consumer goods, plastic ware, electrical and electronic appliances, foodstuff, stationery and packaging. The expo will be kept open from 9 am to 9 p.m. daily till 25 October.
(4) Malaysian Agriculture Minister and party visit Bagan-NyaungU
YANGON, 21 Oct-The visiting Malaysian Agriculture Minister Hon Datuk Dr Mohd Effendi Bin Norwawi and party, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Director-General U Maung Maung Nyunt of Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department and officials, visited Shwezigon Pagoda in Bagan yesterday.
The minister and party were on a visit in Myanmar at the invitation of Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein. They were welcomed and conducted round the pagoda by Chairman of NyaungU District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo and Deputy Director-General U Aung Kyaing of Department of Archaeology (Upper Myanmar).
The minister made cash donations. Then, the minister and party visited Arnanda Temple. They were conducted round the temple by officials. They made cash donations and signed in the visitors' book. Afterwards, the visiting minister and party proceeded to Myanma Institute of Lacquerware. Staff Officer U Khin Aung explained the process of lacquerware making and conducted around the institute. Later, they visited Myanma Lacquerware Museum.
Malaysian Agriculture Minister and wife conclude visitYANGON, 21 Oct-Malaysian Agriculture Minister Mr Hon Datuk Dr Mohd Effendi Bin Norwawi and wife who paid an official visit in Myanmar at the invitation of Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein left here for home by air this evening. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and wife, Malaysian Ambassador to Myanmar Dato Moham-mad Bin Noh and wife, Deputy Minister U Aung Thein and wife, managing directors and directors-general of the ministry and their wives and officials.
(5) Tasks of University for Development of National Races coordinated
YANGON, 21 Oct-A coordination meeting on tasks of University for Development of National Races was held at the UDNR on 19 October.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of UDNR Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, Vice-Chairman of UDNR Council Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt, officials and delegates of State and Division Peace and Development Councils.
Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win spoke on choice of UDNR students who can participate in regional development and providing assistance to UDNR graduates attending advanced courses at universities. Vice-Chairman of UDNR Council Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr Than Nyunt reported on admission to the university in accord with the principles and providing assistance for progress of UDNR. Rector Col Zaw Min Thein reported on continued learning for outstanding students. Delegates of State and Division Peace and Development Councils took part in the discussions. The meeting came to a close with the concluding remarks by Commander Maj-Gen Soe Win.
(6) Institute of Medicine-1 holds 32nd convocationYANGON, 21 Oct- Institute of Medicine-1 held the 32nd convocation at Yangon University Convocation Hall this morning. Present were Rector U Myo Myint, officials, graduates and their parents.
Today's degrees and diplomas included Doctorate of Medical Science (Obstetrics and Gynecology), MMedSc (Anesthesiology), MMedSc (Public Health), MMedSc (Eye, Nose and Throat), MMedSc (Ophthalmology), MMedSc (Radiography), MMedSc (Medicinal), MMedSc (Obstetrics and Gynecology), MMedSc (Surgery), MMedSc (Child Health), MMedSc (Orthopaedic), MMedSc (Microbiology), MMedSc (Clinical Pathology), MMedSc (Physiology),
Diploma in General Surgery, Diploma in TB and Chest Disease, Diploma in Medical Rehabilitation, Diploma in Clinical Pathology, Diploma in Skin and Venereology, Diploma in Radiology, Diploma in Medical Atomic Ray, Diploma in General Practition, Diploma in Hospital Administration, Diploma in Medicine on Legal Affairs and MBBS. Rector U Myo Myint conferred degrees and diplomas on 289 graduates and gave a speech.
(7) Applied Accounting and Management Course opens
YANGON, 21 Oct-Applied Accounting and Mana-gement Course No 4 jointly organized by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Myanmar Accountants Association opened at UMFCCI on Bo Sun Pat Street this morning. Present were President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, central executive committee members and executives, course instructors and guests and trainees. The five-month course is being attended by 65 trainees.
(8) ISD Weightlifting Tournament, National Weightlifting Championship beginYANGON, 21 Oct- A ceremony to open the 32nd Inter-State/Division Weightlifting Tournament and the National Weightlifting Championship, co-organized by the Ministry of Sports and Myanmar Weightlifting Federation, was held at Aung San Gymnasium this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, No 4 Military Region Commander Commandant of Defence Services Records Office Brig-Gen Myo Myint, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik, officials, President of MWF U Aung Soe, executives and spectators. First, Mandalay Division men's team and Yangon Division women's team presented previous year's championship shields to the minister.
Then, the minister gave a speech and opened the tournament. Afterwards, weightlifting teams recited the Sports Oaths. In the Inter-State/Division Tournament, Yi Yi Cho of Yangon Division was first in the 48-kilos of the Clean and Jerk and the Snack events. Aye Aye Maw of Mandalay Division was second and Khin Myo Swe of Mon State third. In the National Weightlifting Championship, Kyi Kyi Than of Rail Transportation was first in the Clean and Jerk and the Snack events. Yi Yi Cho of Yangon Division second and Wai Ni Tun of YCDC third.
(9) 33 Minbu (Saku) Township NLD members resign of own accordYANGON, 21 Oct-Thirty three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Minbu (Saku) Township, Magway Division. Thirty three members of Minbu (Saku) Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Minbu (Saku) Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
