(1) Devotees crowded on Mindhamma HillYANGON, 18 Oct-Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image is to be kept for public obeisance was crowded with devotees including monks, nuns and tourists from dawn to dusk. Engineers and workers of Public Works led by Yangon Division Superintending engineer U Soe Nyunt and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Nyunt Maung San are making efforts to build Gandakuti Kyaung-dawgyi, retaining wall in the south of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Image and southern and northern stairways under the supervision of Mindhamma Hill all-round Construction Committee.
Stone sculptor U Taw Taw and sons continued carving the image from 7 am to late evening. Various wut associations recited parittas and chanted poems extolling the virtues of the Lord of Buddha, the Pathan scriptures, Dhammacakka Sutta, Anita Lakkhana Sutta, Dhahran Partite on the hill from 7 am to 10 p.m. daily. News and Periodicals Enterprise opened its bookshop on Mindhamma Hill and sold books on religion, pocket-sized Look Nitto book and 2001 Myawady calendar. Ministry of Religious Affairs will open a bookshop soon. Donations by the public have amounted to K 80,409,721 from 5 August to date.
(2) K1.2m worth dental chair presented to medical unit
YANGON, 18 Oct - Dr Thein Win of Hnin Sandar Dental Clinic of Latha Street, Latha Township, today presented a dental chair valued at K1.2 million and other equipment to the medical unit of the Ministry of Defence today.
The donation ceremony took place at the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this afternoon.
It was also attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Captain Naval Staff Capt Kyaw Tin Hla, Officiating Colonel Air Staff Lt-Col Tin Win, Director of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute Col Ye Htut, and Commandants of the Tatmadaw hospitals.
Donors Dr Thein Win-Daw Khin Yu Lwin and son Maung Myo Myint Aung presented the dental chair and equipment to Secretary_2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Afterwards, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han thanked the donors.
(3) 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference concludes
YANGON, 18 Oct - The 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference continued at Traders Hotel today. Present at the meeting were Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference Managing Director of Myanma Railways Col Min Swe, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat, delegates of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, delegates of ESCAP and observers from ASEAN nations, Australia, the United States, Japan, France and India. The conference was divided into two groups the General Managers' Group Session and the experts' group session. Managing Director Col Min Swe presided over the General Managers' Group Session.
The meeting discussed improvement of rail operations within a five-year period, private sector's participation in the rail services, relations between the governments and railway companies, trade and exchange of machinery and spaceports and construction of Singapore-Kunming Railroad. General Manager U Soe Win of Insein Locomotive Workshop chaired the experts' group session.
The meeting discussed upgrading of rail tracts and signaling and communication systems, maintenance of locomotives and coaches, modernization of rail services and health care services for railway staff.
Afterwards the 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference successfully concluded in the evening. The 23rd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2001.

Joint Press ReleaseYangon, 18 Oct-The following is the text of the Joint Press Release issued at the end of the 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference here today:
1. Pursuant to the twenty first ASEAN General Managers' Conference held in Bali-Indonesia, during June 16th-18th, 1999, the Twenty Second ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference was convened in Yangon, Myanmar October 17th-19th, 2000.
2. The Conference was attended by delegates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia. Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Asean secretariat, ESCAP headed respectively by Mr Seng Setha (High Ranking Officer), Mr Urip Subagjo (Director of Personnel and General Affairs, PT.KAI), Dr Khamseng Sayakone (Director General of Railway Authority, Ministry of Communication, Transport, Post & Construction Laos), Dato' Mohd Nor Idrus (EXCO Chairman KTMB, Colonel Min Swe (Managing Director), Mr Saravudh Dhamasiri (General Manager, SRT) HE Dr Dao Dinh Binh (Vice Minister of Transport and General Director of Vietnam Railways), Mr Eddy Krismeidi Soemawilaga (Technical Officer of ASEAN Secretariat), Mr Pierre Chartier (Head of Railway Sector, ESCAP).
3. After the welcome address by Colonel Min Swe, Managing Director, Myanma Railways, His Excellency U Pan Aung, Minister, Ministry of Railway Transportation of the Union of Myanmar gave an opening speech and declared the conference open.
4. The Conference was divided by two groups, namely: the General Managers' group chaired by Colonel Min Swe, Managing Director, Myanma Railways and Technical Working Group chaired by U Soe Win, General Manager (Insein Locomotive Workshop), Myanma Railways.
5. The General Managers' Group exchanged views and shared experiences on various aspects of mutual interest namely:
a. General presentations
b. Improvement of Railway Transport Efficiency within five years.
c. Exchange of Experience in Privatization, and Relation between the Government and Railway Company.
d. Trade and Exchange of Equipment and spare part.
e. The feasibility study proposed by KL consultant " final report " on Singapore-Kunming Rail Link.
6. The Technical Working Group discussed in more detailed topics of mutual concern namely:
a. Developments on ASEAN Cooperation in Transport.
b. Level Crossing Safety in Countries of the Asia-Pacific Region.
c. Up-grading of line from Thai Border to Capital of Cambodia/International Seaport.
d. Lao Railway Situation.
e. Supporting Workshop for Modern Signalling Maintenance and Operational Impediments due to different types of signalling system.
f. Operation Impediments due to different types of signalling system.
g. Optimization of Railway Operation.
h. Commuter Service Operational Focusing.
i. Unit Exchange System for Rolling Stock Maintenance.
j. Experience in Construction and Rehabilitation of Infrastructure. k. Modernization in KTMB.
i. Situation of Royal Cambodia Railways
m. Strategic Measures for the Elimination and Improvement of Safety and Operation at Grade Crossing. n. Experience in Rolling Stock Heavy Repair.
o. Maintenance System of Diesel Electric Locomotive and Renovation of GE Locomotive.
p. Rehabilitation and Improvement of Railway Link/Bridge.
q. Employee Welfare and Health System.

7. The Conference decided to hold the Twenty Third ASEAN General Managers' Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2001.
8. The delegates from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam expressed their sincere thanks and appreciation to the people and Government of Myanmar, in particular to the Myanma Railways for the warm hospitality accorded to them and for the excellent arrangements made for the Conference.
9. The Conference was held in the traditional spirit of ASEAN unity, cordially and solidarity.

The Embassy of the Union of Myanmar informed the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 16 October 2000 that James Mawdsley who entered the Union of Myanmar in 1997, 1998 and again in 1999 - either posed as a tourist or illegally without a visa and who was arrested on each occasion will be deported for the third time on the following grounds:
1. The requests made by the British Foreign Office to the Ambassador of Myanmar in London.
2. The personal offers of some prominent British politicians to use their “powers of persuasion” on James Mawdsley not to return to Myanmar illegally.
3. As a charitable gesture in celebration of the end of the “Buddhist Lent” period, and
4. In consideration of the traditional friendly relations between the Union of Myanmar and the United Kingdom.
It is hoped that the Myanmar Government’s leniency on all three occasions will be appreciated and the sovereignty of the country be respected in the future.

(4) Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia visits poultry and fish breeding farms
YANGON, 18 Oct-Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia Datuk Dr Muhammad Effendi Bin Norwawi and party, accompanied by Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Director-General of Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department U Maung Maung Nyunt and officials, arrived at Daik-U feedstuff factory and swine farm in Bago Division this morning.
Managing Director of Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise U Khin Maung Aye reported on the site near Pyinbongyi Dam for the farm, General Manager Dr Than Shwe on other salient points of Daik-U feedstuff factory and swine farm and production. Officials replied to the queries raised by the visiting minister. The visiting minister inspected the site near Pyinbongyi Dam for the farm.
In the afternoon, the visiting minister and party visited modern pig and poultry farms of livestock breeding entrepreneur U Phyo Hla Wai. in Ayethaya Village. The visiting minister and party went to Myanmar CP Livestock Co Ltd in Pyinmabin in Mingaladon Township.
Adviser Dr Than Shwe and factory manager Mr Sirichai reported on history of the factory and production. The visiting minister and party inspected the factory.
The visiting minister and party went to Hlawga fish breeding farm in Mingaladon Township. Farm in-charge U Hoke Sein reported on breeding and production. The visiting minister and party inspected reproduction of fish and fish breeding farms.
(5) Malaysian Agriculture Minister's wife donates cash to MMCWA
Yangon, 18 Oct-A ceremony to donate cash for Myanma Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held at the multipurpose hall of the association at the corner of Thantuma Road and Parami Road this morning, attended by Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, CEC members and the donors.
The visiting Malaysian Agriculture Minister's wife Ybhg Puan Tiara Jacquelina presented K 300,000 for MMWCA to Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe who presented certificate of honour to the donor. Then Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe spoke words of thanks and the donor presented gifts.
Minister attends second Work Coord Meeting for holding 5th Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon) Buddha Pujaniya
YANGON, 18 Oct-The second Work Coordination meeting for holding Fifth Buddha Pujaniya of Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon) was held at the meeting hall of Ministry of Religious Affairs on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon.
It was attended by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, members of the Leading Committee, Work Committee and Sub-committees for holding Buddha Pujaniya of Tooth Relic Pagoda (Yangon) and departmental officials. At first, the minister made an opening address. Then, members of the Sub-committees concerned reported on sector-wise work done, and the deputy minister presented supplementary reports. Later, the coordination meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the minister.
Secretary-General of UMFCCI leaves for Japan
YANGON, 18 Oct-Secretary-General of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Zaw Min Win flew to Japan to attend the Preliminary Meeting of the 3rd Joint Meeting to be held in Tokyo, Japan from 18 to 23 October yesterday evening. He was seen off by Vice-President U Htain Win and officials.
Deputy Minister leaves for PRC
YANGON, 18 Oct-A four-member Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe left here for People's Republic of China by air this morning to attend High Grade Meeting on Human Settlement in Asia and Pacific Region to be held in Hangzhou from 19 to 23 October this year.
The Myanmar delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Managing Director of Public Works U Nay Soe Naing, Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw, departmental heads and officials and their family members. The delegation comprises Director (Civil) of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Win Myint, Chairman of Myanmar Construction Entrepreneurs' Association U Khin Shwe and CEC member U Than Myint.
Promotion of public health care services discussed in BagoYANGON, 18 Oct - A meeting on promotion of public health care services in the eastern sector of Bago Division was held at Bago People's Hospital this morning.
It was attended by Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo, Deputy Director-General of Health Department Dr Soe Aung and officials, Divisional Health Officer Dr Maung Maung Myint, district and township health officers, disease control teams, and doctors. Discussions dealt with clean water supply, use of hygienic toilets, maternal and child health, school hygiene, AIDS and venereal disease control programmes, among others. The deputy minister gave suggestions on the future plans and inspected the hospital.
(7) Seminar on cashew plantation, technology and productivity held at MAS
Yangon, 18 Oct - The Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Myanmar Academy of Agricultural, Forestry, Livestock and Fishery Sciences and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation organized a seminar on cashew plantation, technology, productivity and its economics in the Conference Hall of Myanma Agriculture Service today.
Present at the seminar were officials of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, President of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences U Tin Hlaing and members, divisional, district and township agricultural supervisors of Bago, Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions, owners of private cashew plantations and observers. Vice-President of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences Dr Myint Thein made a speech. It was followed by the presentation by Dr C K Peethambaran, Cashew Consultant of Myanmar Singapore Plantation Ltd, and discussions. The seminar concluded with the vote of thanks by President of Myanmar Academy of Agricultural, Forestry, Livestock and Fishery Sciences U Tin Hlaing.
Champ Yangon City Volleyball team recounts experiences
YANGON, 18 Oct - The Yangon City Volleyball team, champion in the 8-14 October 2000 Shahalam Asia Inter-City Volleyball Invitational, recounted experiences in the Ruby Hall of the National Indoor Stadium-1, Thuwunna, this afternoon.
The players were introduced to Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint. Then, the minister made a speech. President of Myanmar Volleyball Federation U Tun Myint Naing explained the team's set-up, Vice-President U Aung Kyi the contest and Coach U Soe Thein the players' skill. The minister urged them to strive on their utmost with spirit, discipline and training. On behalf of the team, President of Myanmar Volleyball Federation U Tun Myint Naing presented the championship trophy to the minister.
Body Building and Beauty Contest held in Bago Division
YANGON, 18 Oct-Year 2000 Body Building and Beauty Contest of 28 townships in Bago Division was held at the gymnasium in Bago on 15 October evening. It was attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye and wife Daw Kyi Kyi Ohn, Commander of No 77 LID Brig-Gen Maung Maung Swe and wife, the secretary of Bago Division Peace and Development Council and members, chairmen of township Peace and Development Councils, division level officials, members of Holding Committee for the contest, referees and fans totalling over 3,000 people. The contest comprises 5' 2", 5' 4", 5' 6" and above 5' 6" divisions of Body Building (men), and Beauty (women). Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye presented first prize (men) to Maung Kyaw Kyaw Soe, and Daw Kyi Kyi Ohn first prize (women) to Ma Nyo Me Han (Shwekyin).
Students of sports plus education school making good progress
YANGON, 18 Oct - The students of the Sports Plus Education Training School run by the Sports and Physical Education Institute, Department of Sports and Physical Education Department of the Ministry of Sports, have recently achieved remarkable success in the international and internal sports competitions. Maung Win Min Zaw of the school deceivingly won the gold medal in the 11-15 October International Malaysian Invitational Archery Championships held in Kuala Lumpur.
In the Year 2000 Swimming Contest in age group held in Dagon Myothit Modern Swimming Pool on 14 and 15 October, Maung Aung Kyaw Moe of the school set three new local records in 13-14 age group, and Ma Zin April Aung two new local records in the same age group. The sports plus education school has been opened since 1997-98 academic year with the aim of promoting the sport skills of the students and enabling them to participate in the local and international events.
(9) Drug trafficker gets sixteen years
YANGON, 17 Oct-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Lashio Special Anti-drug Squad and Railway Police Force, acting on information, searched the haversack of San Thein, 43, of Aungthabyay Ward, Myit Nge, who was on No 132 Lashio-Mandalay Down-train at Lashio Railway Station at 5.15 am on 7 January 2000 and found 122.9 grams of heroin kept in seven soap boxes. Action has been taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by No 1 Lashio Police Force. The Lashio District Court handed down a sentence of sixteen years' imprisonment on him under Section 15/19 (A) on 4 September 2000.
Heroin, stimulant tablets seized in Hopong
YANGON, 17 Oct- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Nay Myo, son of U Pe' on Pyidaungsu Road in MyoU Ward, Hopong Township, on 5 October. The authorities seized four bottles of heroin weighing 20.955 grams and WY brand 8,800 stimulant tablets hidden underground near a brick well behind the house. Action is taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
(10) 56 Labutta Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 18 Oct-Fifty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division. Fifty-six members of Labutta Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Labutta Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
