(1) Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander in Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe receives SRV Minister of Foreign AffairsYANGON, 17 Oct-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received the Vietnamese delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Nguyen Dy Nien of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam at the Credentials Hall of Pyithu Hluttaw Building at 10 am today.
Also present at the call were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Command-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department. The Vietnamese delegation was accompanied by Ambassador of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa.
(2) Secretary 2 meets officials of Ministry of
Industry- 2YANGON, 17 Oct-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with departmental heads, factory managers and officials of Ministry of Industry-2 at the ministry this afternoon.
Specking on the occasion Secretary-2 said all-round assistance is being provided for the development of the agriculture sector as Myanmar's economy is based on the sector' s progress. Not only government departments but also entrepreneurs are being encouraged by the State to manufacture agricultural equipment and implements for the development of industrial sector with the progress in the agriculture sector. As the ministry produces machinery, it is essential to help enhance farm machinery production of private entrepreneurs by assigning duties while striving for the progress of the ministry.
Then, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin explained the work done by the departments of the ministry and plans to the implemented for the development of industrial zones. Afterwards, Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung gave suggestions, Later, departmental heads and officials reported to the Secretary-2 on work carried out sector wise and production of the machinery. (3) Secretary-2 attends meeting to clarify services of Yangon-Mandalay Market Boat
YANGON, 17 Oct-Services of Yangon-Mandalay Market Boat was clarified at the hall at Nan Thida Jetty in Seikkan Township this afternoon. Chairman of Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Secure and Smooth Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave suggestions.
The market boat of Inland Water Transport is running for progress of private sector and people in towns and villages along the river in accord with the market-oriented economy.
Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on service of five market boats plying between Yangon and Mandalay and Mandalay and Bhamo, articles to be sold on the boat, arrangements for new routes and targets of the Ministry of Transport.
The Secretary-2 said progress has been made in domestic air and water transport to some extent and the momentum is to be raised. There are plenty of passengers and commodity transport and officials are to make arrangements for safety of passengers and goods, he said.
The Secretary-2 urged officials of the Ministry of Transport to make endeavours for continued progress of passengers and commodity transport.
The Secretary-2 inspected ceramics, farm equipment, electrical goods, various kinds of clothes, medicines, household goods, enamel ware, fertilizers, pesticides, canned food, soft drinks, ready-made clothes and personal goods at 18 shops of Myanma Ceramic Industries, Government Employees Cooperatives Syndicate, Myanma Agriculture Service and private entrepreneurs on Mya Sanda Boat.
(4) Secretary- 3 addresses opening of Bawle River Bridge (Yebawthaung)
YANGON, 17 Oct - Bawle River Bridge (Yebawthaung) linking Bawlekyun Htantabin Township and Aingkalaung-kyun in Taikkyi Township in Yangon North District, Yangon Division, was commissioned into service this morning, addressed by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint.
Also present were member of the Commander Maj Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister , Minister and , others associations and local people totalling over 25,000.
Speaking on the occasion Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said Htantabin is a new township in Yangon Division formed on two islands, which are, Tetthitkyun and Bawlekyun islands. Tetthitkyun, the seat of the township office, is linked with Pathein-Nyaungdon-Yangon Road, and Bayintnaung and Aungzeya bridges. Thus, the people of the island are enjoying progress in all economic, health, education sectors.
Due to lack of transport the people on the Bawlekyun were experiencing less progress in the sectors in the past. Thus, Head of State Senior General Than Shwe has given guidance on building bridges on Hline and Bawle rivers. The local people art now enjoying the smooth and secure transport due to opening of the Myochaung Bridge and the present Yebawthaung Bridge.
Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and the project engineers and staff for making greater efforts for early completion of the facility.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun said the bridge was built in accord with the decision made at the Special Projects Implementation Committee Meeting 1/99 held on 2 June 1999. The meeting was attended by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe. He elaborated on the points of the bridge, saying it will help in implementing the land reclamation projects in the region and promoting the economic, social, education and health sectors of the local people. He thanked the commander of Yangon Command, the respective departments and local people for their cooperation in building the facility.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-3 said at present, the government is giving priority to the rapid progress of the less developed regions in order to develop all the regions of the Union of Myanmar. Opening of the Bawle River Bridge will lead to progress of not only the local people but also the progress of the entire Yangon Division and the Union of Myanmar; due to transport difficulties Bawlekyun in Htantabin Township and Aingkalaung-kyun in Taikkyi Township lacked progress in the past.
In accord with the Head of State's guidance, new roads are being built and the existing ones are being upgraded and maintained. At present there are 17,479 miles of roads in the nation up 3,844 miles from 13,635 miles in 1988. The new roads include over 70-mile Pyinmana-Pinlaung Road, over 66-mile Taungdwingyi-Taungnyo-Pyinmana Road, over 44-mile Taungup-Thandwe Road, over 154-mile Dawei-Palauk-

-Dawei-Myeik Road, over 80-mile Hanmyintmo-Myogyi-
Aungban Road, over 202-mile Yangon-Sittway Road, over 179-mile Mandalay-Thabekkyin-Bhamo-Myitkyina Road, and over 115-mile Kalay-Falam-Haka Road.At present roads are being built the length and breadth of the nation. Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe has given guidance on building of at least two roads leading from each state and division to the Capital Yangon. In the past, there existed only No 1 Highway leading to Yangon passing through Htaukkyant and Mingaladon, and today, many entry routes such as No 2 Highway through Ywathagyi-Toekyaunggalay-Thingangyun, No 3 Highway through Htaukkyant-Mingaladon Garden City-North Okkalapa, No 4 Highway through Shwe-pyitha-Danyingon-Insein, No 5 Highway through Nyaungdon-Bayintnaung Bridge, No 6 Highway through Kayan-Thongwa-Thanlyin-Thanlyin Bridge, and No 7 Highway through Ywathagyi-Toe-kyaunggalay-Htauk-kyant. As many roads have to be built, a lot of bridges along them have to be constructed; from 1988 till today, altogether 113 over 180-foot-long bridges have been built and put into service, and Bawle River Bridge (Yebawthaung) is the ! 114th to be commissioned.
The reinforced concrete bridge is 1,940 feet long, with 24-foot-wide two-lane motorway and with a five-foot-wide pedestrian lane on either side; it can withstand 60-ton loads. The Secretary-3 noted that it is encouraging and delightful achievement, for all bridges, big and small, were built by Myanmar engineers and workers with modern technology. The ability to build such river bridges huge in size and length without any outside financial, material and technical assistance proves high national calibre, he said.
Later, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint presented gifts for the project engineers, technicians and personnel through Project Superintending Engineer U San Nyein.
Afterwards, the Secretary-3 and party took their places on the bridge on Htantabin side for the formal inauguration. At the auspicious time, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun inaugurated the bridge by cutting the ribbon. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally unveiled the stone pillar bearing the record on construction of the bridge. Then, the Secretary-3 and party, together with all those attending the ceremony, walked over the bridge to the other side.

The Embassy of the Union of Myanmar informed the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on 16 October 2000 that James Mawdsley who entered the Union of Myanmar in 1997, 1998 and again in 1999 - either posed as a tourist or illegally without a visa and who was arrested on each occasion will be deported for the third time on the following grounds:
1. The requests made by the British Foreign Office to the Ambassador of Myanmar in London.
2. The personal offers of some prominent British politicians to use their “powers of persuasion” on James Mawdsley not to return to Myanmar illegally.
3. As a charitable gesture in celebration of the end of the “Buddhist Lent” period, and
4. In consideration of the traditional friendly relations between the Union of Myanmar and the United Kingdom.
It is hoped that the Myanmar Government’s leniency on all three occasions will be appreciated and the sovereignty of the country be respected in the future.

Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia arrives
YANGON, 17 Oct-At the invitation of Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister of Agriculture of Malaysia Datuk Dr Muhammad Effendi Bin Norwawi and wife Ybhg Puan Tiara Jacquelina, accompanied by 45 members, arrived here this morning under the bilateral goodwill and technological exchange programme on livestock.

Victorious Myanmar archery team arrives back
YANGON, 17 Oct- The selected Myanmar archery team led by Vice-President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Tin Maung Oo arrived back here by air yesterday evening. The archery team secured champion in the Malaysia International Invitational Archery Championship held from 11 to 15 October in Malaysia.The victorious Myanmar archery team was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Patron of MAF Daw Khin Hla Hla, President U Khin Shwe, Secretary-General of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik and selected Myanmar athletes.
In the championship, police L/Cpl Thin Thin Khaing won three gold and one bronze in the individual shooting event, IP Thi Thi Win one gold and one bronze and SIP Myat Thuza Myint two silver. Nyi Nyi Tun of the Ministry of Defence won one silver in the men's single shooting event. Myanmar women's team won two gold in the women's team Olympic Round and women's team Fita Round and men's team one gold in the men's team Olympic Round. Myanmar archery team won 12 medals seven gold, three silver and two bronze. The Myanmar selected archers is making preparations for another Asian archery tournaments.
(6) Minister for Commerce inspects installation of edible oil refinery
YANGON, 17 Oct-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, together with responsible officials, heard the reports on installation of edible oil refinery and its capacity by Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading U Min Hla Aung and officials at the meeting hall of No 03 Bran Oil Mill in Insein Township yesterday afternoon.
Then the Minister and party inspected the work done for installation of the machinery and gave necessary instructions to the officials. The refinery is innovated by the engineers from MAPT on self-reliance with local produce.
(7) 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference opens
YANGON, 17 Oct- A ceremony to open the 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference hosted by Myanmar for the first time was held at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning, with an opening address by Patron of the Organizing Committee for 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung.

22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference begins
YANGON 17 Oct- The 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference hosted by Myanmar for the first time began at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.
Present at the conference were Chairman of Organizing Committee for 22nd ASEAN Railway General Managers' Conference Managing Director Col Min Swe of Myanma Railways, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat, leaders and members of delegations from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, representatives of ESCAP and observers of ASEAN countries, Australia, the United States Japan, France and India. The conference was divided into two the General Managers Group Session and the experts" group session.
Managing Director Col Min Swe of Myanma Railways presided over the General Managers' Group Session. Participants discussed improvement of rail transport efficiency within five years, exchange of experience in privatization and relations between the government and railway company, trade and exchange of equipment and spare parts and progress report on Singapore-Kunming Rail Link. General Manager U Soe Win of Insein Locomotive Workshop presided over experts' group session.
Those present discussed upgrading of rail tracks, improvement of signal and communication systems, maintenance of locomotives and carriages, modernization for rail transportation and health care for staff of railways. The first-day session came to a close in the evening.

YANGON, 17 Oct-The final examinations and second batch special lectures for 1999-2000 academic year of University of Distance Education Yangon will be held at Yangon University, Dagon University, Eastern Yangon University, Mawlamyine University, Pathein University, Sittway University, Pyay University, Dawei University, Bago Degree College, Hpa-an Degree College, Hinthada College and Myeik College. Third year art students majoring in Law who are registered at the UDE Yangon are to attend special lectures and take exams at Yangon University.

(9) 20 members resign from Kyunsu Township NLD of own accord
YANGON, 17 Oct-Twenty members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Kyunsu Township, Taninthayi Division. Twenty members of Kyunsu Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyunsu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 8 August 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
