(1) Secretary-2 attends enshrinement ceremony of Maha Kantara Tainna Pagoda in Kayah State

YANGON- 13 Oct-The enshrinement ceremony of Maha Kantara Tainna-Pagoda, in conjunction with the Shwehtidaw-hoisting ceremony, Shwekya Thingan offering ceremony and the consecration ceremony, was held at the pandal near the pagoda on Mingala Hill in Bawlake, Kayah State, yesterday morning.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo fixed Seinphudaw atop the pagoda.  The ceremony was graced by the presence of member of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha Sayadaw of Pobbayon Kyaung of Loikaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Gunapiya, Sayadaw of Waso Kyaung of Loikaw Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Baddanta Panindasiri and 18 members of the Sangha from Loikaw, Bawlake, Pasawng and Maise Townships.

The ceremony was opened by reciting namo tassa three times. Then, conch shells were blown and drums beaten three times.

The Secretary-2 and party and the congregation received Nine Precepts from Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita  Bhaddanta Gunapiya. Next, the upathakas offered paritta flowers, water, sand and threads to the members of  the Sangha.

Afterwards, members of the Sangha recited parittas. Later, the upathakas sprinkled paritta flowers, water and  sand and tied threads on the platform of the pagoda.

The Secretary-2 offered documents related to the land of the pagoda, Seinphudaw and alms to the Pobbayon  Sayadaw. Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo presented Hngetmyatnadaw and alms to the Pobbayon Sayadaw.

Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing also presented the Sasana flag and alms to the Sayadaw. The ministers, national race  leaders and well-wishers presented offertories to the members of the Sangha. Joint Secretary of Yangon  City Development Committee U Kyi Kyin presented donations in cash and kind made by YCDC, to local  missionary Sayadaws.

The Pobbayon Sayadaw delivered a sermon, and the Secretary-2 and party shared merits for good deeds.  Donations to the fund of the pagoda included K 20 million by well-wishers.

The  Secretary-2, the commander and officials accepted the donations. Then, round the pagoda, the  Secretary-2 conveyed Seinphudaw, Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo Hngetmyatnadaw, Minister for Health  Maj-Gen Ket Sein Shwekya Thingan and the Sasana flag, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut the  image portraying victory over Mra, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung the image residing at  Yadanagaya Golden Abode, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung the image sitting at the foot of  Rajayatana Linlun Tree,

 Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha the documentary letter and Minister for  Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt silvery Bodhi tree.

 Senior military officers, heads of department, local national race leaders and well-wishers conveyed the  remaining objects to be enshrined and tiers of Shwehtidaw.

 Next, the programme to enshrine sacred objects in the first reliquary of the pagoda took place. Architectures  opened the reliquary and offered lights. At the auspicious time, the Secretary-2 enshrined the image portraying  victory over Mara in the first reliquary.

 Next, the Secretary-2 enshrined silver Bodhi tree in the middle reliquary of the pagoda and the ministers and  officials, sacred objects. The middle reliquary was closed and scented water sprinkled. After that, the  programme to enshrine sacred objects in the upper reliquary began.

 The Secretary-2 enshrined Kakusanda Buddha Image in the southern reliquary. Commander Maj-Gen Maung  Bo, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut and Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein enshrined Gautama Buddha Image, Kassapa  Buddha Image and Kawnagamana Buddha Image in the eastern, northern and western reliquaries  respectively.

 Then, the Shwehtidaw-hoisting ceremony was held. The Secretary-2 and party sprinkled scented water on  the first, second and third tiers of the Shwehtidaw and hoisted them atop the pagoda by means of the  decorated carriage of Mya Layyin Htidaw hoisting group of the Tatmadaw (Air).

 Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Deputy Minister  Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung hoisted the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh tiers of the Shwehtidaw and  Hsatthwaphudaw atop the pagoda.

 Later, Shwekya Thingan, the Sasana flag, Hngetmyatnadaw and Seinphudaw were hoisted atop the pagoda.  The Secretary-2 fixed Seinphudaw at the top of the pagoda and offered Shwekya Thingan.

 Next, Shwehtidaws were hoisted atop the encircling stupas. Architect U Maung Maung Nyunt transferred the  care of the pagoda to the well-wishers. The Sayadaws and members of the Sangha consecrated the pagoda.  Then, the ceremony came to a close. The Secretary-2 and party performed the rituals of silver and golden  showers. The Secretary-2 and party offered " soon"  to the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha. The  Secretary-2 and party also attended the ceremony of planting Maha Bodhi tree at the place south-east of the  pagoda, and planted Maha Bodhi tree.


(2) Secretary-2 meets national race leaders from Shan State and Kayah State

YANGON, 13 Oct- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met national race  leaders from Shan State and Kayah State at the hall of Loikaw Station , Kayah State, yesterday evening.

Also present together with Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo were member of the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen  Maung Bo, ministers, the deputy minister, Chairman of Kayah State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen  Nyunt Hlaing and heads of department. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo cordially greeted U Aung Hkam Hti,U Takleh,  U Htay Ko, U Sanda, U Than Soe Naing, U Lee Ral, U Goeri and members and gave instructions to them. Then,  Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented gifts to them.



(3) Departmental personnel, people, Tatmadawmen urged to harmoniously strive for development of regions  in Kayah State

YANGON, 13 Oct - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo toured townships  in Kayah State and met with Tatmadawmen, families and departmental personnel yesterday. The Secretary-2  and party attended the opening ceremony of Bawlake District Union Solidarity and Development Association  Office in Bawlake yesterday.

USDA Central Executive Committee member Col Thein Nyunt and Chairman of Kayah State Peace and  Development Council Brig-Gen Nyunt Hlaing formally opened the office. The Secretary-2 and party inspected it.

At Bawlake Station Hall, the Secretary-2 met with departmental personnel of Bawlake District and Township  and Tatmadawmen and families of the station.

Local authorities reported to the Secretary-2 on accomplishments and requirements in carrying out regional  development tasks. Minister  Maj-Gen Tin Htut,  Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister  U Thaung, Minister  U Soe Tha, and  Minister Col Thein Nyunt looked into their requirements and explained development tasks being carried out by  respective ministries.

Deputy Minister  Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung also stressed the need to make concerted efforts for the opening of  a multimedia teaching centre at the basic education high school in Bawlake Township.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council  Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo reported to the meeting on the rendering of assistance  for regional progress, future plans, urging local people to strive for regional development on self-reliance  basis.

Economic In-charge U Nay Win Tun of Pa-O National League presented K 2.5 million  K 500,000 for  construction of a monastery in Bawlake, K 1 million for the multimedia teaching centre of BEHS, and K 1 million  for development tasks of Bawlake Township.

Officials accepted the cash. Joint Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee U Kyi Win presented one  TV set each to Bawlake, Pasawng and Maise Township USDAs and Deputy Director-General of the State  Peace and Development Council Office U Zaw Myint Pe, first-aid kits.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said the State is rendering necessary assistance for progress of  respective regions; all should strive with the self-reliance spirit for regional development. As Bawlake is a less  developed region, the government is providing assistance for its development.

All the local authorities and people and the Tatmadaw-men and families should work in harmony for  development of their region.

On arrival at Pruhso in the afternoon. In the Zatigon Hall of the battalion, the Secretary-2 met Tatmadawmen  and families and departmental personnel.

Officials reported to the Secretary-2 on health, education and other requirements of the township, joined in by  Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo. The Secretary-2 gave suggestions.

The Secretary-2 and party cordially greeted those present at the meeting. On arrival at Dimawhso. During his  meeting with Tatmadawmen and families and departmental personnel at the local battalion, the Secretary-2  heard a report on health and education requirements of the township, efforts being made to increase flow of  water into Ngwedaung Lake and cultivation of crops with the water supplied from the lake.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Ministers Col Thein Nyunt, Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, U Thaung, Maj-Gen Ket Sein and U  Soe Tha and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung attended to their needs.

Pa-O National League presented K 1.2 million towards the funds for multimedia teaching centres of the basic  education schools in Pruhso and Dimawhso townships. In Loikaw, the Secretary-2 and party attended the  ceremony to hand over the 150-bed hostel to the nurse's training school.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein,  Head of Kayah State Health Department Dr Than Oo formally opened the  hostel. A ceremony to mark the opening ceremony of the hostel was held at the top floor of the hostel.

Senior Engineer of Public Works U Khin Maung Aye presented documents related to the hostel to Dr Than Oo.  Then, well-wishers presented cash for the Nurses Training School.

Principal of the School Daw San San Win reported to the Secretary-2 on requirements. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin  Oo attended to their needs.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the two-storey hostel. Minister for National Planning and  Economic Development U Soe Tha met staff of Kayah State, district and township Planning Departments at the  office of Kayah State Planning Department on 11 October evening and gave instructions. Minister for Electric  Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut inspected Lawpita Hydel Power Plant in Loikaw on 11 October and gave necessary  instructions to officials.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected township hospitals in Pruhso and Dimawhso and fulfilled the  requirements. Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung inspected Basic Education High Schools in Pruhso and  Dimawhso Townships.

Korean delegation calls on Minister for Foreign Affairs

YANGON, 13 Oct- Under the exchange visit programme between the Republic of Korea and ASEAN member  countries, a 10-member delegation led by Director Mr Lee Kyun Dong of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and  Trade of ROK arrived here by air yesterday evening.

The ROK delegation called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung at his office at noon today. Then, the  delegation met a Myanmar delegation led by Director-General U Aye Lwin of ASEAN Affairs Department and  officials of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Progress of  Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Revenue and National  AFTA Unit at Wunzin Minyaza Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at 10 am today. They discussed political,  economic and investment affairs, construction sector of Myanmar, development of border areas, narcotic  drugs eradication, relations between Myanmar and AFTA. While Myanmar, the Korean delegation will visit  Shwedagon Pagoda, the National Museum, Hlinethaya Industrial Zone and Korean garment factories in the  zone. On 14 October morning, the delegation is to be scheduled to leave for ROK.

Minister meets Ambassadors of Japan and India

YANGON, 13 Oct -Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe met Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru  Tsumori at his office at 2.30 PM today. Present at the call were Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw  Myint, Director-General of Transport Department U Soe Win, Director-General of Directorate of Water  Resources and Improvement of River Systems Captain Chit Khin (Navy), Principal of Institute of Marine  Technology U Win Thein. The minister also met Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran at 3.30 PM.

Present at the call were Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Director-General of Department  for Civil Aviation U Win Maung, Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line U Khin Maung Kyi and Managing  Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay.

Yangon Mayor meets Deputy Governor of Cheolla Namdo Province of Korea

YANGON, 13 Oct-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay met Deputy Governor Mr  Kimjae Chul and party of Cheolla Namdo Province of the Republic of Korea at his office this morning. They  discussed development affairs. Also present at the call were YCDC members, heads of department and  officials.

 Korea-Myanmar merchants discuss promoting trade cooperation

YANGON, 13 Oct- Under the arrangement of promoting trade cooperation programme between the Republic of  Korea and the Union of Myanmar, a meeting to discuss bilateral cooperation in trade between merchants of  Korea and Myanmar, organized by the commercial unit of the Korean Embassy, was held at Inya Lake Hotel  this morning.

Vice-Governor Mr Kim Jae-Chul of Kwang Ju Chonnam and Korean entrepreneurs and Myanmar  entrepreneurs discussed bilateral cooperation in trade. Also present were Ambassador of Korea Mr Chung  Jung-Gum, Commercial Attaché Mr Kim Jae-Chan and officials. The Korean merchants group comprises 12  persons of IT communications, ceramics, plastic and fibre, air-condition system, generator, special cement,  steel construction materials, rice mill, tar, motor-cycle and foodstuff production enterprises.

Deputy Minister receives GM of Mitsubishi Corporation

YANGON, 13 Oct- Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo received General Manager of Mitsubishi  Corporation Mr Yamanokuchi at his office on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road this morning.  Also present at the call  were officials of the Ministry of Health.

Myanmar delegation arrives back

Yangon, 13 Oct- A Myanmar delegation led by Yangon City Development Committee member Col Thaung Wai  arrived back here by air yesterday evening after attending the ceremony to mark the 990th Founding  Anniversary Day of Hanoi City of Vietnam.

The delegation was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Yangon City Development  Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Vice-Chairman Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary Col Myint Aung, Committee  members, officials and relatives. Members of the delegation Deputy Head of Revenue Department Maj Sann  Lwin and Head of Branch Capt Aung San Myaing also arrived back here on the same flight.

Commander inspects preparations for Performing Arts Competitions

YANGON, 13 Oct - Chairman of the Leading Organizing Committee of the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural  Performing Arts Competitions member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon  Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than today inspected the theatres  and the National Museum where the Competitions will be held.

Accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the Leading Organizing Committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt  and officials, the commander inspected preparations being made at the venues. The commander and party  inspected preparations at the Padonma Theatre in Sangyoung Township the venue of Music Competition, the  National Museum in Dagon Township the venue of the Song Competition, the National Theatre in Dagon  Township the venue of the Dance Competition, and the Kambawza Theatre in Bahan Township the venue of  the Composing Competition.

Mayor inspects Hanthawady nursery camp

YANGON, 13 Oct- Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay together with officials  inspected Hanthawady nursery camp undertaken by Parks and Playgrounds Department of YCDC on  Kyundaw Street in Kamayut Township this morning. Mayor U Ko Lay was welcomed by member of YCDC U  Aung Soe, Head of Parks and Playgrounds Department U Nyunt Pe, Head of Information and Public Relations  Department U Hla Myint Swe and officials. Mayor U Ko Lay inspected onion and potato nurseries and  cultivation of flowers for tax-free markets. The mayor and party inspected vegetable patches. He gave  instructions to officials on extension of kitchen crops plantation and sale of seasonal crops to tax-free  markets.


(5) Minister signs in Book of Condolences for late Sri Lankan PM

YANGON, 13 Oct- Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung signed in the Book of Condolences in memory of the  late former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka Mrs Sirimavo RD Bandaranaike at the residence of the Ambassador of  Sri Lanka at No 34 on Tawwin Road in Dagon Township at 10 am today.


(6) Performing Arts Competitions Leading Committee meets Work Committee and Sub-committees

YANGON, 13 Oct-The Leading Committee, Work Committee and Sub-committees for Organizing the Eighth  Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competitions held a coordination meeting at National Theatre on  Myoma Kyaung Street, Dagon Township, this afternoon.

Present at the meeting were Chairman of Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Myanmar Traditional  Cultural Performing Arts Competitions member of the Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and officials.  Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave an opening address on the occasion.

Then, Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt explained facts about the Competitions. Next, Col Win Maung, chairmen and  members of the Sub-committees concerned reported on tasks carried out. Later, the meeting came to an end  with concluding remarks by the Commander.



(7)  Work coordinated to produce palm oil and construct palm oil mills

YANGON, 13 Oct - The Committee for the Production of Palm Oil and Construction of Palm Oil Mill held a work  coordination meeting at the meeting hall of the Prime Minister on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this morning.

Present were Chairman of the Committee Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung ,  departmental officials and guests. Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung said that to implement the second objective out  of three laid down for the economic development of the State, cultivation of oil palms is being extended. To  improve the standard of palm oil production, machinery manufactured by national entrepreneurs and  technicians is to be used and efforts made to realize the objectives successfully.

Secretary of the Committee Managing Director of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise U Myint Oo reported on  progress of work and tasks being undertaken and future tasks. Chairman of Seinban Industrial Production  Cooperative Society U Kyaw Win and Chairman of Myanma Railways Electrician Employees Welfare Society U  Kan Kaung reported on work related to production of palm oil and construction of palm oil mills.

Deputy Minister U Hlaing Win and departmental officials discussed matters pertaining to construction of palm oil  mills. Brig-Gen Lun Maung gave instructions on the work.



(8) AWB presents K 1m for staff welfare of DSA

YANGON, 13 Oct- A ceremony to donate K 1 million to Defence Services Academy by Asia Wealth Bank was  held at DSA in PyinOoLwin yesterday morning. Vice-Chairman of AWB U Aik Tun presented K 1 million for staff  welfare of DSA to PyinOoLwin Station Commander Commandant of DSA Brig-Gen Tin Oo.

Then, Vice-Chairman of AWB U Aik Tun presented K 500,000 for DSA Maternal and Child Welfare Association  to Patron of the association Daw Thida Htay.

Next, a ceremony to hand over the new building of No 22 Basic Education Primary School at DSA donated by  AWB was held at the school. U Aik Tun presented K 500,000 for the funds of the school to Chairman of  School Board of Trustees Lt-Col Nay Aye and documents related to the school to Brig-Gen Tin Oo. Then, U Aik  Tun and Brig-Gen Tin Oo formally opened the school. AWB spent K 2.2 million for construction of the school  building. Afterwards, the donation ceremony for Zinamanaung Pagoda in PyinOoLwin was held. U Aik Tun  donated K 1.5 million for construction of the wall of the pagoda to Chairman of PyinOoLwin Township Peace  and Development Council U Soe Win and Chairman of the Pagoda Board of Trustees U Saw Yi.



(9) Talks on no smoking held at MMCWA building

YANGON, 13 Oct- A talk on no smoking, organized by World Health Organization, was held at Myanmar  Maternal and Child Welfare Association building at the corner of Parami and Thanthuma Roads in South  Okkalapa Township this morning. Present on the occasion were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu  Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Central Executive Committee members, patrons and 200  MMCWA member youths.

First, Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe extended greetings. Then, Mr Alan Landers, former  commercial actor for Winston cigarettes and Tiparillo cigar advertisements, gave lectures on disadvantages of  cigarette and his experience with the use of video tapes to the audience 0 and answered the queries. Later,  Chairperson Dr Kyu Kyu Swe presented souvenir to Mr Alan Landers.



(10)  27 Khin-U Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 13 Oct-Twenty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Khin-U  Township, Sagaing Division. Twenty-seven members of Khin-U Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own  accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Khin-U Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party  politics of NLD.
