(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to SpainYANGON, 12 Oct-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain, on the occasion of the National Day of Spain which falls on 12th October 2000.
(2) Management Committee for Observance of 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day meets
YANGON, 11 Oct-Management Committee for Observance of the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day held its first coordination meeting at the meeting hall in the Resistance Park this afternoon. Present on the occasion were Chairman of Management Committee member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, senior military officers and officials of Management Committee and Work Committees.
Chairman Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on observance of 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day on a grand scale, preparation of hostels and parade ground. Secretary of Management Committee for Observance of the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Lt-Col Min Naing of Yangon Command reported on formation of Management Committee and Work Committees. Officials of various committees reported on tasks. Officials of Myanmar Police Force, Fire Services Department and Myanmar Red Cross Society also reported on participation in the parade. The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the commander. The commander inspected preparation at the Resistance Park and demonstration of the parade columns.
(3) Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation inspects Thaphanseik Multi-purpose Dam Project
YANGON, 11 Oct-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin together with officials inspected construction works at Thaphanseik Multi-purpose Dam Project in Kyunhla Township, Shwebo District, Sagaing Division on 9 October.
He inspected the main dam construction works on the western bank of Mu River, condition of the diversion canal from the river and the spillway, and the site chosen for building three coffer dams. On the eastern bank later, he inspected construction of irrigation outlet, hydro-electric power station and the three installed penstocks of the station, building of a concrete structure connecting the main power station and the penstocks, 12 radial gates with Gee-type sluice gates, the main spillway, the auxiliary spillway and the main structure. In the briefing hall, Director of Construction Division-4 of the Irrigation Department U Maung Maung Tin briefed the minister on the work completed so far. Director-General of the Irrigation Department U Kyaw San Win presented a supplementary report. The minister gave suggestions on construction programmes.
Thaphanseik Multi-purpose Dam is being built on Mu River, and its main structure stretches over four miles. It is intended to feed Kindat Diversion Dam nine miles downstream along the riverine route in order to irrigate 150,000 acres. In addition, it can irrigate Kabo Dam's 350,000 acres, and Kindat Diversion Dam's right canal will irrigate over 10,400 acres through Budalin canal and 14,800 acres through Ayadaw canal. The entire irrigated acreage will be 520,000 on which double cropping and mixed cropping can be conducted. The storage capacity of the biggest dam in Myanmar is 2.88 million acre-feet, and the hydro-electric power station will supply 117.2 million kwh the whole year.
Today, the Irrigation Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Myanma Electric Power Enterprise of the Ministry of Energy, and Myanmar engineers are working day and night for completion of the structure to dam Mu River entirely. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and party proceeded to Kyaybin-et Creek Dam Project in Kanbalu Township.
Director U Maung Maung Tin reported to the minister on progress of work. Later, the minister inspected construction of the outlet conduit, retaining walls and other works. The main embankment of the dam is 7,700 feet long and 78 feet high, and can store 40,400 acre-feet. It will irrigate 5,000 acres and supply drinking water to nearby places. The minister and party reached Tatywa Village in Wetlet Township, Shwebo District, and inspected the river-water pumping and irrigation projects there. Director-General of Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Shwe reported to the minister on multiple and mixed cropping in the area all the year round due to the water-pumping project. The minister later inspected the pumps, main canal and channels.
The three river-water pumping stations at Tatywa on Ayeyawady River are now irrigating over 5,000 acres in Wetlet Township and over 10,000 acres in Sagaing Township to cultivate monsoon and summer paddy, pre-monsoon sesamum and long-staple cotton, and pedisein. Later, the minister and party inspected the cotton plantations.
(4) Minister inspects construction of Mann Myanmar bridge No 6
YANGON, 11 Oct - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority U Thein Htay, inspected prawn cold storage of Htay Myanmar Sea Prawn Co Ltd and construction site of Mann Myanmar bridge No 6 in Kyimyindine this evening. Then, Chairman of Myanmar General Trading U Te Toe and Managing Director U Min Zaw explained the construction of the bridge. Managing Director U Thein Htay presented supplementary report. The minister gave necessary instructions to them.
(5) Minister meets Chief Representative of CAMC
YANGON, 11 Oct-Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met Chief Representative of China National Constructional and Agricultural Machinery Import & Export Corporation (CAMC) Ms Luo Yan and party at his office at 3.30 PM today. (6) Mindhamma Hill crowded with devotees
Yangon, 11 Oct - Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Street in Insein Township was crowded with members of the Sangha, members of the religious associations and devotees who were paying obeisance to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image today. Tourists also visited the hill. Officials, engineers and workers of Public Works under the supervision of the superintending engineers were building the Gandakudi Kyaung where the Image will be kept for public obeisance, the northern stairway and the retaining wall.
Sculptor U Taw Taw and sons are carving the image daily. Religious associations from various bodies were reciting religious verses all day long. Buddhist monk Zuiho Nakashita of Jufukuin Temple, Koyasan town, Japan, paid homage to the Image and presented US $ 500 towards the funds for the Image. Donations received at the donations centre on the hill from 5 August to date amounted to over K 73 million. The donation centre is opened from 7 am to 9 PM daily on the hill.
Clarification on seal of Excellence to be presented by UNESCO and AHPADA
YANGON, 11 Oct-A clarification on Seal of Excellence to be presented by UNESCO and ASEAN Handicrafts Promotion and Development Association (AHPADA) was held at MiCasa Hotel on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning. Present were officials of Ministries of Information, Industry-1, Commerce, Culture, Cooperatives and Education, UNDP, Myanmar National Commission for UNESCO, AHPADA and media men. Resident Representative of AHPADA Daw Wah Wah Lwin (a) Daw Claudia Saw Lwin Robert said the Seal of Excellence for Asian handicrafts will be presented by UNESCO Regional and Cultural Adviser's Office and AHPADA.
The Seal of Excellence for handicraft products in Southeast Asia is awarded for international awareness of Asian handicraft and serving as a quality control mechanism and marketing device for promotion of hand-made traditional or innovative craft products from the region which conform to rigorous standard of cultural, environmental and production excellence.
The purpose of the Seal of Excellence is to promote awareness of and foster pride in the indigenous and traditional craft techniques, forms and design in the creation of contemporary crafts of the ASEAN countries, to encourage the creative use of traditional, indigenous craft and sustainable use of natural resources and enhance the quality and commercial viability.
The competition will be held in Bangkok on 15 April 2001. Handicrafts must be produced from any one or a combination of materials including natural fibers, woods, stones or ceramics. All materials used must be natural products indigenous to, grown or manufactured in one of the countries of ASEAN. Handicrafts must have creative alliance of traditional skills and innovative art and marketability to enter world market. Crafts products together with photo of the product are to be sent not later than January 2001. Seminar on promotion of efficiency of education personnel in non-formal education opensYangon, 11 Oct-A seminar on promotion of efficiency of education personnel in non-formal education jointly sponsored by Myanmar Literary Resource Centre and UNESCO Culture Centre for Asia and the Pacific (ACCU) opened at the meeting hall of MLRC in the compound of Myanmar Education Research Bureau this morning, with an address by Minister for Education U Than Aung.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt, the directors-general and chairmen of departments and boards and bureau, Head of Office of the Ministry of Education, Advisers, rectors, Chairman of Management Committee of MLRC U Than Oo and members, members of Work Committee for non-formal education on education for all, diplomats, resident representatives of UN Agencies, guests and participants. Minister U Than Aung delivered an opening address.
Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori and Director of ACCU Mr Shigeru Aoyagi extended greetings. The seminar continues till 20 October.
Myanmar Delegation leaves for SRV
YANGON, 11 Oct-A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, left here for the Socialist Republic of Vietnam by air this morning to attend the Sixth Conference of ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) to be held in Hanoi on 12 and 13 October this year. The Myanmar delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, the directors-general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry and their family members. The delegation comprises Lt-Col Tin Oo of Ministry of Defence, Director of Ministry of Information U Win Kyi, Manager U Ya Khant and Staff Officer U Ye Linn.
UMFCCI Vice-President leaves for SingaporeYANGON, 11 Oct-Vice-President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Aung left here for Singapore by air this morning to attend the Third ASEAN Affairs Coordination Meeting on Hanoi Plan of Action to be held there from 11 to 14 October. The Vice-President was seen off at Yangon International Airport by President of UMFCCI U Win Myint, General Secretary U Zaw Min Win and officials.
Yangon City beat Shahalam City, Bangkok City
YANGON, 11 Oct-Yangon City volleyball team of Myanmar is taking part in the 2000 Shahalam Asia Inter-City Volleyball Invitation in Malaysia. Yangon City volleyball team beat Shahalam City team 3-0 on 10 October and Bangkok City team 3-0 today. The Yangon City team will meet Malaysia Volleyball Association team on 12 October.
(9) Man jailed for trafficking heroin
YANGON, 11 Oct-The Toungoo District Court on 20 September this year punished a man giving 15 years in prison to him for trafficking heroin. A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, on 25 July 2000, searched the house of Saw Phawgay, and arrested him together with 1.306 kgs of heroin. The Kyaukkyi Police Station filed Saw Phawgay, 27, son of U Al Htoo, of Myitta Ward, Kyaukkyi, under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Toungoo District Court sentenced him to 15 years' imprisonment under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
(10) 8 Yamethin Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 11 Oct-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division. Eight members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 16 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
