(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends message of congratulations to Yugoslavia

YANGON, 9 Oct-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of congratulations to His Excellency Mr Vojislav Kostunica who has been elected as President of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.


(2) Leading Committee for Organizing the Third Meeting of ASEAN Youth Affairs Ministers holds meeting 1/2000

YANGON, 9 Oct -The Leading Committee for Organizing the Third Meeting of ASEAN Youth Affairs Ministers held meeting No 1/2000 in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement this morning. Patron of the Leading Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the meeting.

Also present were the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials of the work committee and sub-committees and guests.

The Secretary-1 said that Myanmar would host the Third Meeting of ASEAN Youth Affairs Ministers. Therefore, the leading committee, the work committee and sub-committees have been formed with officials of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and other related ministries.

So, coordination work is to be done to ensure the systematic and successful holding of the Third Meeting of ASEAN Youth Affairs Meeting and to arrange excursion programmes to enable guests to see what should be known in Myanmar. Today in the international community, youth affairs are receiving priority and attention.

Specially, in South-East Asian nations, it is highly likely that only the youths will lead the nations in future. This being the case, cooperation among the youths in the region is being promoted with the aim of ensuring mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation among leaders of the nations in future in striving for the stability, peace and development of the South-East Asian region.

In conclusion, the Secretary-1 encouraged all to contribute to the discussions on the hosting of the Third Meeting of ASEAN Youth Affairs Ministers. Chairman of the Work Committee Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa reported on the compiling of papers to be submitted to the meeting, invitation of delegates, reception and accommodation, transport, meeting agenda, arrangements for the opening ceremony, the hosting of a dinner and excursion programmes. Then, respective subcommittees reported on their work done. Afterwards, a general round of discussions followed.

Next, the Secretary-1 said that emphasis is being given to development of the youth sector in Myanmar, and it is necessary for all to strive to get ASEAN families to know the efforts for development of the youth sector in Myanmar while such a meeting of ASEAN youth affairs meeting is being held in Myanmar. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 called for cooperation of departments in systematically and successfully holding the meeting.


(3) Yangon Command emerges champion in Defence Services C-in-C's Trophy Under-21 Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Soccer Tournament

YANGON, 9 Oct- The final match of the 16th Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Under-21 Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Soccer Tournament was held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna at 3.30 PM today.

Among the spectators were Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, Military Attaches, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, officials of the Ministry of Sports, guests, officers and Tatmadaw members and their family.

In the final match, Yangon Command beat No 11 Light Infantry Division 3-2. After the match, Chairman of Tatmadaw Soccer Committee Commandant of Defence Services Self-defence and Sports Institute Col Sein Tin Win presented the third prize to No 77 LID team. Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe presented individual prizes to players of No 11 LID team which was runner-up in the tournament.

Similarly, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than presented individual prizes to players of Yangon Command team which won the first in the tournament, best player awards in places to respective winners and the fair play award to No 77 LID team. Then, on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint presented championship trophy to Yangon Command team.


(4) Minister meets Ambassador

YANGON, 9 Oct-Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin met Ambassador of Pakistan to Myanmar Mr Mian Yusuf Shah at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 10 am today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Director-General of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Director-General of the Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, Pro-Rector (Admin) of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Dr Hla Pe and Head of Office U Maung Maung Myint.


(5) Myanmar delegation attends Ministerial Meeting for Regional Tourism Service

YANGON, 9 Oct- Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu attended the Ministerial Meeting for Regional Tourism Service at Shangri-La Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand, on 6 October. Also present on the meeting were Minister for Tourism Service Mr Veng Sareyvuth of Cambodia, Deputy Minister for Economic and Tourism Service Mr Chen Sayavong of Lao People's Democratic Republic, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office and Chairman of Tourism Authority of Thailand Dr Adisai Bodharamik, delegation members of the respective countries and officials of TAT.

Delegates of four countries took part in the discussions and signed the minutes of the meeting. The cooperation in development of four-nation tourism industry includes relations of transportation routes for tourists among Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR, basic assistance for tourism affairs, planning for promotion of tourism industry, investment for development of tourism service, more cooperation in development of human resources, private entrepreneurs, participation in cooperation of tourism service and mutual cooperation among the four countries. The deputy minister and party arrived back here by air yesterday evening.


(6) Mindhamma Hill teeming with monks, devotees and tourists

YANGON, 9 Oct- Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Street in Insein Township was teeming with members of the Sangha and devotees who turned out to pay homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image today. Among them, tourists were seen as well.

Engineers and physical and mental workers from Public Works continued carrying out construction work of Gandakuti Taik where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image will be kept, the northern stairways and the retaining wall of Mindhamma Hill. Stone sculptor U Taw Taw and group are carving the Image daily. Craftsman U Tin Ohn and party are also carving statues.

Wut associations recited religious verses. Donations are pouring into the fund of the Image. Donations received at the donation centre on the hill from 5 August to date, totalled K 71,448,748. The donation centre is kept open from 7 am to 9 PM daily.


(7) Symposium on Roll Back Malaria: Myanmar Perspectives on 14 Oct

YANGON, 9 Oct- The Symposium on Roll Back Malaria: Myanmar Perspectives, organized by Microbiology Society of Myanmar Medical Association, will be held at MMA building at No 249 on Theinbyu Street at 9 am on 14 October. Physicians and specialists will give lectures on Roll Back Malaria: Myanmar Perspectives. Those wishing to attend the lectures may register at MMA office, Institutes of Medicine-1 and 2, the National Health Laboratory and the Department of Medical Research (Lower Myanmar) during office hours beginning 9 October.

Minister receives officials of Japanese Cleft Palate Foundation

YANGON, 9 Oct- Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received Professor N Ohno of Japanese Cleft Palate Foundation at his office this afternoon.  Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers Professor Dr Mya Oo and officials.

Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association to hold conference

YANGON, 9 Oct-Myanmar Veterinary Surgeons Association will hold its 8th conference from 23 to 24 October at Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road in Kamayut Township.

At the conference, papers will be read, livestock breeding and veterinary medicine companies will exhibit their products. The conference will focus on designation of supporting work for development of veterinary science and livestock breeding and production. The opening ceremony of the conference will be held at 8.30 PM on 23 October. Members who have not registered to attend the conference and veterinary surgeons may register until 20 October.

Gems and jade fetch US $ 7,756,956

YANGON, 9 Oct - Chairman of Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein supervised the sale of gems through competitive bidding at the emporium in Myanma Gems Hall on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road today. Altogether 62 lots of gems were sold for US $ 4,659,429. Jewellery, jade figurines and gems sold at fixed prices realized US $ 3,097,527. Today's proceeds totalled US $ 7,756,956. Lots of pearl will be sold through competitive bidding tomorrow.

126th Anniversary World Post Day observed

YANGON, 9 Oct-The 126th World Post Day and prize presentation ceremony for 29th international letter writing competition and international postage stamp design contest organized by Directorate of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications, Posts and Tele-graphs, was held at the meeting hall of Telegraph and Postal Service Training School this afternoon.

It was attended by departmental heads and officials of Directorate of Telecommunications and Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, judges of the contests, guests, principals and prize winner students. On behalf of director-general of Directorate of Telecommunications, Director U Khin Maung Oo presided over the ceremony and Staff Officer Daw San San acted as master of ceremonies.

First, the director delivered a speech. Deputy Director Daw Khin May Thwe read out the message sent by the Director-General of World Postal Union in English and Staff Officer Daw San San read it out in Myanmar. Ma Wah Wah Tun, seventh standard student of No 5 Basic Education Middle School in Mawlamyine won the first prize in the 29th World Post Day commemorative under-15 international letter writing contest, Ma Myint Myint Aye, seventh standard No 2 Basic Education High School in Hlaingthaya Township second and Ma Hpu Pwint Maw Khaing, eighth standard (A) of No 4 BEHS in Botahtaung Township third.

Two consolation prize winners were Ma Hta Su Mon, seventh standard of No 4 BEHS in Thanlyin Township and Ma Yadana Theu, eighth standard (A) of No 1 BEHS in Bago Township. U Nan Aung (a) U Zaw Htoo Aung of Ahlon Township won the first prize in the Year 2000 International Postage Stamp Design Contest, Maung Moe Win San of Kyauktada Township second and Ma Zin Zin Aung, sixth standard of No 2 BEHS in Latha Township third. U Yaza Tun of Mayangon Township, Ma Cho Zaw Aung, eight standard (C) of No 2 BEHS in Latha Township, U Nan Aung (a) U Zaw Htoo Aung of Ahlon Township and Maung Aung Ko Ko Kyaw of Kyauktada Township won special prizes. Myanmar archery team leaves for Malaysia

YANGON, 9 Oct- A 10-member Myanmar archery team left here by air this morning to take part in the International Archery Championship to be held in Malaysia from 9 to 16 October.

The team was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Patron of Myanmar Archery Federation Daw Khin Hla Hla, President U Khin Shwe, General Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of the Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik and officials.

Yangon City beat Ho Chi Minh City 3-0 in Volleyball Invitation

YANGON, 9 Oct- Yangon City volleyball team of Myanmar is taking part in the 2000 Shahalam Asia Inter-City Volleyball Invitation in Malaysia being held from 8 to 14 October. Yangon City volleyball team beat Ho Chi Minh City volleyball team of Vietnam 3-0 yesterday. Yangon City team meets with Singapore City team today. Myanmar traditional boxing tourney beings

Myanmar Traditional  Boxing Tournament

YANGON, 9 Oct- The opening ceremony of the years 2000 Second Myanmar Traditional Boxing Tournament (novice level) co- organized by Ministry of Sports Federation was held at Aung San Gymnasium this afternoon.  It was attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig- Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials , EC members , 72 sportsmen of ten State and Division teams and enthusiasts.  First, the minister made a speech. Then the first day matches began. The matches will continue till 18 October.

(10) Woman drug trafficker gets 25 years

YANGON, 9 Oct-Members of local intelligence unit, acting on information, searched a Dyna with number plate 2Ka/8515 at the check point on No 2 Highway in Dagon Myotyhit (South) Township at 7 PM on 12 March and arrested Daw Aye Myint, 50, of Tagundine Village, Amarapura Township, with 263.3 grams of heroin. Dagon Myothit (South) Police Station filed her under Sections 15/19(A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. Yangon (East) District Court handed down 25 years' imprisonment on her under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law on 18 August.


(11) Voters of Magway, Minbu, Thayet, Pakokku and Gangaw Districts in Magway Division unanimously petition for dissolving NLD

YANGON, 9 Oct-A total of 32,410 voters from Magway, Minbu, Thayet, Pakokku and Gangaw districts, Magway Division, unanimously petitioned for dissolving National League for Democracy at District Sports Ground in Magway on 2 September morning. On behalf of the attendance's, Advocate U Win Tin of Salin, Minbu District, tabled a motion calling for dissolution of NLD. Owner of Lamintha Brokerage House U Kyaw Win of Magway seconded the motion. Owner of Photo Studio U Nyunt Lwin, on behalf of the local people from Magway district; merchant U Kyaw Thu, on behalf of the local people from Minbu district; Oil Miller U Hla Thein, on behalf of the local people from Thayet district; car owner U Hla Win Pe, on behalf of the local people from Pakokku district and merchant U Oo Tin, on behalf of the local people from Gangaw district, presented petitions signed by the voters from respective districts to member of Magway Division Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Division Judge U Kan Hla. Meeting Chairman U Aye Ko of Pakokku District expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it and the ceremony ended with chanting the slogan Our Three Main National Causes.

There are 683,020 people, who can vote, in Magway District. The number of people, who demanded dissolving NLD, is 644,710 people or 94.29 per cent. There are 346,627 people, who can vote, in Minbu District. The number of people, who demanded dissolving NLD, is 313,997 people or 90.59 per cent. There are 385,672 people, who can vote, in Thayet District. The number of people, who demanded dissolving NLD, is 353,629 people or 91.48 per cent. There are 527,797 people, who can vote, in Pakokku District. The number of people, who demanded dissolving NLD, is 512,986 people or 97.19 per cent. There are 128,235 people, who can vote, in Gangaw District. The number of people, who demanded dissolving NLD, is 126,248 people or 98.45 per cent. There are 2,071,951 people, who can vote, in Magway Division. The number of people, who demanded dissolving NLD, is 1,951,570 people or 94.14 per cent.

28 Tatkon Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 9 Oct-Twenty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Tatkon Township, Mandalay Division. Twenty-eight members of Tatkon Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Tatkon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 22 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
