(1) Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of newly-accredited Ambassador of Republic of Hungary

YANGON, 6 Oct- Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe accepted credentials of the newly-accredited Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary Mr Sandor Jolsvai at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today. Also present on the occasion were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.



(2) Agreement signed to build liquefied petroleum gas factories

YANGON, 6 Oct - Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise under the Ministry of Energy and China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation signed an agreement on the building of two mobile liquefied petroleum gas factories this evening.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the signing ceremony at the Sedona Hotel on KabaAye Pagoda Road.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, ministers, the attorney-general, deputy ministers, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Mr Liang Dong, officials of the Ministry of Energy, Vice-President of ' China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation Mr Zhou Lixian and party and guests.

Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi made a speech. Vice-President Mr Zhou Lixian spoke words of thanks.  Managing Director of Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise U Kyaw Shein also spoke on the occasion. Managing Director U Kyaw Shein and General Manager Mr Zhou Shimin of CMC signed the agreement and exchanged documents.

The factories are to be built with the aim of using liquefied propane and butane included in the natural gas produced from oil fields in Myanmar, using them at industries and distributing them as wood- substitute fuel.

Out of the two factories, the smaller one will produce 14.88 tons of liquefied petroleum gas a day and the bigger one 47.86 tons a day. The two factories will be built at an estimated cost of US$ 13 million by CMC Dong Fang International Trading Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China.



(3) Secretary-2 inspects fish and prawn breeding work in Twantay Township

YANGON 6 Oct- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt- Gen Tin Oo inspected fish ponds in Twantay Township today.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party went to Kayinchaung Village in Twantay Township by boat. The Secretary-2  and patty met with township level departmental officials, villagers and livestock breeding entrepreneurs at the  basic education high school branch in Kayinchaung Village. Fish breeders U Kyaw Yee, U Kya Ku, U Pe and U  Kyin Hoak reported on the breeding of fish by local people and their requirements and Headmaster U Han  Shwe on the strength of the staff and requirements of the school.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on the opening of the multimedia teaching centre for students. Minister  Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein said that in Myanmar, there are over 48,000 acres of fish ponds and over  67,000 acres of prawn ponds totalling 116,662 acres of fish and prawn ponds.

Among the states and divisions, Yangon Division has the largest number of acres of fish ponds and produces  fish most. Out of acres of fish ponds in Yangon Division, over 21,000 acres of fish ponds are in Twantay  Township, so it is a very important region for the breeding of fish. Of the regions in Twantay Township where  fish breeding is carried out, Mepyaykyun covering Kayinchaung Village breeds fish most next to  Shwemayinkyun. About 60,000 viss of fresh water fish from Twantay Township is put on sale daily at  Sanpya Fish Sale Centre in Yangon.

The minister also pointed out the need to extent the systematic ant scientific breeding of fish.  The Secretary-2  coordinated the work to set up a trust fund for the opening of a multimedia teaching centre at the  school.  Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said that among divisions, Yangon Division plays a crucial role  in striving for the economic development of the State.

Next, the Secretary-2 said that the purpose of their visit to the region is to attend to the needs for the  development of Kayinchaung Village.  Then, the Secretary-2 and party inspected arrangements to put on the  market fish from Kayinchaung Village.

The Secretary-2 and party left-Kayinchaung Village for Pyathataik Village by boat at noon,-and inspected the  fish ponds of-U Th-an Lwin.  In' meeting with fish breeding entrepreneurs, Ministers Brig-Gen Maung Maung  Thein, Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Brig-Gen Lun Maung and deputy ministers explained arrangements to provide  assistance for the prawn and fish breeding sectors. - Then, the Secretary-2 spoke about purchase of  palletes, assistance for economic development of the State, phone communication and security matters.

On behalf of fish and prawn breeding entrepreneurs, U Than Lwin, who is breeding fish at 300 acres of the  fish pond, thanked the officials. The Secretary-2 and party left Pyathataik Village at 3 PM.



(4) Secretary-3, Deputy Prime Ministers view Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium

YANGON, 6 Oct- Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint together - with  Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun viewed Mid-Year Myanma Gems  Emporium sponsored by Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee at Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye  Pagoda Road at 10 am today.

They were welcomed by Patron of the Myanma Gems Emporium Central Committee Minister for Mines Brig-Gen  Ohn Myint, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Chairman of the Central Committee Deputy Minister  for Mines U Myint Thein, Secretary of the Central Committee Managing Director of Myanma Gems Enterprise U  Khin Oo and Central Committee members.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and party viewed the private jewellery shops, gem lots to be sold at fixed  prices, jewellery, jade figurines, gem painting shops which are on display on the ground floor, jade blocks  mined from Htelone Sein, Samar and Hmaw Kyan Hmaw mines and gems of the Union of Myanmar Economic  Holdings Limited mined from Mogok on display at the emporium and gem lots and pearl lots on display on the  top floor of the emporium.

Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister U Myint Thein and Managing Director U Khin Oo conducted the  Secretary-3 and party round the emporium.

Then, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and Deputy Prime Ministers Vice- Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen  Tin Tun attended the sales of jade blocks through tender system and competitive bidding.



(5)  National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 6 Oct - The National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting at the Commission's  meeting hall this afternoon.

It was attended by Chairman of the Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice- Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and  members. The Commission Secretary, and the National Convention Convening Work Committee: and the  Management Committee presented reports pertaining to the National Convention.

The members of the Commission gave suggestions. Commission Chairman Maj- Gen Saw Lwin gave.  suggestions upon overall reports and made a  concluding address.



(6) Commander attends coordination meeting in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 6 Oct- A coordination meeting on development of Industrial zones, promotion of agricultural and  livestock products-of Ayeyawady Division was held at the meeting hall of the Division Peace and  Development Council Office yesterday morning. Present were Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and  Development Council Commander of South- West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Commander  Brig Gen Tint Swe, senior Tatmadaw officers, members of Division Peace and  Development Council, chairmen of District and Township Peace and Development Councils and departmental  officials.

Commander Maj-Gen' Thura Shwe Mann delivered a speech. Chairmen and departmental officials reported to  the meeting on their activities. The Commander attended to their needs.  In the afternoon, Commander Maj-Gen  Thura' Shwe Mann met Ayeyawady Division and SouthWest Command Football Sub-Committees, managers  and coaches of five district football teams, ' district sports officers. Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann  looked into the requirements.


(7) Minister for Finance meets foreign visitors

 YANGON, 6 Oct- Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein received Director-General Mr  Katsumaro Chikushi of Finance Ministry of Japan and party at his office at 4.30 PM today .Also present was  Governor U Kyaw Kyaw Maung of Central Bank of Myanmar.

 Minister meets UNHCR Resident Representative

YANGON, 6 Oct- Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun received Resident Representative of  United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Mr Bich Canh Nguyen Tang at his office this morning. Also  present at the call were Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Director-General of  Immigration and National Registration Department Col Maung Htay. (8) Respect paid to teachers of Child All-round Development Centre of MMCWA

YANGON, 6 Oct- A ceremony to pay respects to teachers by school  children of Child All-round Development Centre of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held  at the Centre at the corner of Parami Road and Thanthuma Road, South Okkalapa Township, this morning.

It was attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe Vice- Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win  Shwe, CEC members, patrons of Supervisory Committee and teachers.

First, the school children paid respects to officials of MMCWA  presenting gifts.  Then, Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe delivered a  speech.  Later, entertainment programmes were presented by the school children.

80th birthday ceremony, reordination of Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw of Thwayhsaykan Mon Pali Tekkatho  Yamanya Waiponla Taik held8

YANGON, 6 Oct-The 80th birthday and reordination ceremonies of  Presiding Nayaka Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Vara of  Thwayhsaykan Mon Pali Tekkatho Yamanya Waiponla Taik on New Yedashe Road in Bahan Township was  held in conjunction with the merit-sharing ceremony for the three-storey building of the Taik yesterday morning.  Members of the Sangha recited parittas in Mon language and the Vice- Chairman Sayadaw administered a  sermon.

 Then, Patron of the Waiyawitsa Group Dr Mahn Thet San accepted  donations of Patron of Leading Committee for construction of three- storey building worth K 20 million of  Yamanya Waiponla Taik Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo wife Daw  Khin Than Nwe and family. Similarly, Patron Brig-Gen Tha Htay (Retd)  presented K 10,000 for the funds of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee to Director-General Dr Myo  Myint. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vara thanked the Venerable Sayadaws.

 Lecturer Sayadaw of the Taik Bhaddanta Kumara read out the biography of the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw  and Chairman of Waiyawitsa Group Nai Maung Sein and members supplicated-on the annual report and  financial
 reports.

 Then, well-wisher Thiri Pyanchi (U Cho Tun), wife Daw Khin Khin Cho and family who donated K 515,00Q for  the funds of the Taik offered the stone plaque to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw.  Afterwards, well-wishers  offered 'soon'  to Sayadaws.

Later, Mon national race Sayadaws delivered a sermon in Mon language and shared merits gained.

Basic Printing Training Course No 1/2000 concludes

YANGON, 6 Oct- Basic Printing Training Course No 1/2000 of Printing and Publishing Enterprise concluded at  GTC Printing Factory in Insein Township, this morning, with an address by Minister for Information Maj- Gen  Kyi Aung.

The course was con- ducted with the aim of in- creasing the number of skilled persons by teaching basic and  high technologies in accord with developing printing work in market economy. Also present on the  occasion were Deputy Ministers for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and U Thein Sein, Director-General U  Khin Maung Htay of Myanma Radio and Television, Director-General U Chit Naing of Information and Public  Relations Department, Managing Director Col Myint Thein of Printing and Publishing Enterprise, advisers to the  Ministry of Information U Kyi Lwin, U Than Maung and U Kyaw  Hsan, Head of Office Capt Soe Aung, officials;  guests, instructors and trainees.  First, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung made a speech.  Then, Managing Director Col  Myint Thein presented certificates to the trainees. And the ceremony came to an end.

The 1 5-week course was attended by 19 trainees from the Ministry of Information and the Ministry of  Defence.  After the ceremony, the  minister inspected GTC Printing Factory.

Refresher Course No 7 for Customs Officers concludes

YANGON, 6 Oct- The concluding ceremony of Re- fresher Course No 7 for Customs Officers was held at  meeting hall of the training school of the Customs Department this morning.

It was attended by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Finance and  Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung,  Director-General of the Customs Department U Tun Chun, directors-general and managing directors of  departments and enterprises under the ministry and trainees.

The minister made a speech. He said customs work plays an important role in carrying out development tasks  of the State. This kind of course has been conducted with the aim of getting customs officers to know more  about orders, directives and procedures issued in accord with changing situations and market economy  which is being practised by the State. As Myanmar is a member of ASEAN, the courses have been conducted  to make sure that customs work is in consonance with international standards . The trainees are to properly  apply the knowledge gained from the course at their field work. The two-week course was attended by 40  trainees.

Law Officers' Legal Affairs English Course concludes

YANGON, 6 Oct- The Law Officers' Legal Affairs English Course No 3 concluded at the training hall of the  Attorney-General's Office in Pabedan Township this morning.

It was attended by Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye, directors,  deputy directors, the law officer of Yangon Division, the head of the Office of the Attorney-General and  trainees.

The attorney-general gave a speech. Then, the attorney-general and the deputy attorney-general presented  prizes to outstanding trainees, and certificates to trainees.

Mayor inspects progress of agricultural activities in Uto Kyain area

YANGON, 6 Oct-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay accompanied by officials,  inspected construction of embankment and digging tasks at Inyashay to be turned to a pond for supplying  water to summer and monsoon paddy cultivation at Uto Farmland, Taikkyi Township, yesterday evening.

This morning, the Mayor inspected schools and the hospital in Tawlati region and offered provisions to the  Sayadaw and provided assistance to the schools.  Similarly, the Mayor also attended to the needs of Kyain  BEPS and Meethwaygyin Village BEPS. Afterwards, the Mayor inspected serving nutritious meals to the  schoolchildren by YCDC Agriculture Group at Meethwaygyin BEPS.

Myanmar delegation arrives back

YANGON, 6 Oct- A Myanmar delegation comprising Deputy Director-General Daw Theingi Tin of Directorate of  Investment and Companies  Administration and Deputy Director U Htay Chun of Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development led  by Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone left here by air on 3 October to attend the Third ASEAN Free  Trade Area Council held in Chiangmai, Thailand, on 4 October.

On 4 October, the Minister and party attended the meeting at Westin Riverside Plaza Hotel in Chiangmai,  Thailand, together with delegates of 10 ASEAN member nations. They discussed implementation of Principal  Agreement on Investment Affairs and cooperation in future tasks to boost investments in the ASEAN region

After the meeting, ministers from ASEAN 10 nations held a Press  Conference. The Minister and party left Chiangmai, Thailand, and arrived back here by air yesterday evening.

Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium fetches over US$ 1.2m

YANGON, 6 Oct- The Mid-Year Myanma Gems Emporium continued at the Myanma Gems Mart today.

A total of 105 lots of jade worth US$ 1,207,982 were sold through tender and competitive bidding systems.  Fixed price gems, jade, figurines and jade carvings-fetched US$ 10,821. Sale of jade lots continues tomorrow morning through competitive bidding. So far, 601 gem merchants at home and from abroad have arrived here.



(10)  29 kilos of heroin seized in Muse

YANGON, 6 Oct- A combined team comprising local intelligence unit and members of Anti-drug Squad, waiting  near Asia World gate in Muse, Shan State (North) on 27 September, this year, stopped and searched a Hilux  and arrested driver Ko Wai Tant of Haymolon Village, Monekoe, and Lauk Si (a) Yi Lauk Si, as a passenger, at  the same village, together with 40 blocks of heroin weighing 29 kilos. Action was taken against the two under  the Narcotic Drugs. and Psychotropic Substances Law.



(11)  15 members resign from Shwebo Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 6 Oct- Fifteen members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of  Shwebo Township, Sagaing Division.

Fifteen members of Shwebo Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending  letters of resignation to Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 26 April 2000 as they no  longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
