This morning, the Secretary-1 met national hoteliers and tourism entrepreneurs at Bagan Hotel. Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin reported to the Secretary-1 on local and foreign investments of the tourism industry, present situation of the industry, the number of arrivals, plans to promote the industry and matters relating to cultural tourism and eco-tourism.
The Secretary-1 said Visit Myanmar Year was launched in 1996 with a view to promoting the industry in Myanmar; since then the government has laid emphasize on the industry's progress as it will benefit all the masses and classes of the people. Myanmar possesses ancient cultural heritage and natural beauties. Bagan region alone is an excellent tourist destination. Thus, tourism has a good opportunity to develop in Myanmar. Due to the disturbances of the internal destructive group and its colonialist masters, the industry did not develop well. At present, the four South-East Asian nations including Myanmar are coordinating to launch the Thuwunna Bommi Expedition; and soon tourists will enter Myanmar under the programme. As there are the Road to Mandalay and reverie cruise programmes, more tourists will visit Bagan region. At present, the Mandalay International Airport is serving as another gateway to Myanmar, ensuring convenient transport to visitors to Mandalay and Bagan. Hoteliers should work for the long-term benefit of the entire tourism industry and uplifting of national prestige and integrity, safeguarding the national culture and national dignity in harmony with the progress of their business rather than paying attention only to self interest.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected medical treatment and maintenance of health equipment at the People's Hospitals in Yinmabin and Pakokku. (3) Nation enjoying food, clothing and shelter sufficiency due to government and people's harmonious effortsYANGON, 4 Oct - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met members of Division, District and Township Peace and Development Councils and departmental personnel at the town hall in Magway on 2 October.
Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw reported to the Secretary-1 on agricultural extension plan of the division, situation of fallow and vacant lands, the area of fallow and vacant lands granted to national entrepreneurs, progress in agriculture and land reclamation tasks, storage capacity of dams in the division, crop cultivation plans of the division, estimated yield of crops and transport and development endeavours.
Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-1 said more success has been achieved than expected in implementing the State's objectives for the national economic progress. As Magway Division was designated "the oil bowl" of the nation, regional officials should strive for ensuring cooking oil sufficiency in the nation.
If there is oil sufficiency in the nation, the foreign currency spent in importing edible oil can be used for national development tasks. Thus, regional officials should strive to extend cooking oil production.
Agricultural produce such as rice and beans and pulses are the nation's main products; fishery products, oil and gas and gems are also earning foreign currency. Extension of the paddy yield will lead to export more surplus rice. Though Myanmar is not an industrialized nation, the development in import substitute industry will help develop the national economy. The State has developed many infrastructure in the division with an aim of promoting the regional economy. Irrigation facilities as well as large bridges have been built in the region. Construction of irrigation facilities has led to agricultural development in Magway Division; and the bridges on Ayeyawady River will help promote trade and transport between the east and west banks.
The divisional level authorities should render assistance for early completion of such major projects in the division. The state is making arrangements for the year-by-year progress of the health and education of the division; and the people should understand the government's goodwill. In this situation, internal destructive elements under the domination of neo-colonialists are launching anti-government activities. The group with the help of some big neo-colonialist countries is attempting to destabilize the nation. The group in collusion with some of the neo-colonialist countries tried to disparage the nation's reputation at the time the millennium world leaders conference and UN General Assembly were being held.
The government will never accept such perpetration to destroy national peace, stability and development; and action will be taken as necessary. Efforts will be made with added momentum in implementing nation-building tasks for the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation. Due to the harmonious efforts of the government and the people, the nation is enjoying sufficiency in food, clothing and shelter conditions. More success will be achieved owing to the cooperative endeavours of the government and the people. As there are many tourist attractive places in the division, the industry can help develop the regional and national economy. Local authorities at different levels should strive to extend cultivation of edible crops, beans and pulses and cotton.
