(1) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image crowded with devotees

YANGON, 1 Oct- Mindhamma Hill on Mindham-ma Road in Insein Township was  crowded with devotees today. The devotees were paying obeisance to Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image which was placed there. Engineers and  employees of Public Works are building Gandakudi Kyaung and stone sculptors  led by U Taw Taw were carrying out carving work of the Image. Visiting  Laotian delegation led by Chairperson Madame Onechanh Thammavong of Laos  Women’s Federation paid obeisance to the Image and made donations this  morning. U Aung Tun (First Class Mawgun Award)-Daw Tin Myint (a) Daw Min Zan  and family donated a bronze bell weighing 54 viss and 25 ticals and K 70,000  to the Pagoda Board of Trustees and Fund-raising Committee. Thazin Min  restaurant served fried vermicelli to persons discharging duties on the hill.  Wut associations recited religious verses. Mindhamma Hill All-round  Construction and Health Committee opens a dispensary and traditional medicine  clinic. Donations by the public have amounted to K 65,906,169 from 5 August  to date.


(2) Secretary-1 attends the conclusion of special refresher course No 7 for  basic education teachers

YANGON, 1 Oct- Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party, accompanied  by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay  Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and  officials, left Mandalay for Pyin Oo Lwin by helicopter this morning and  arrived at Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) in Pyin Oo Lwin  Township, at 8.45 am.

Then, the Special Refresher Course No 7 for Basic Education Teachers  concluded at Yadana Hall of Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper  Myanmar) in Pyin Oo Lwin Township, Mandalay Division, at 9 am, with an  address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin  Nyunt.

Also present were members of the Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint ,Commander  Maj-Gen Soe Win, ministers, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and  Training Board and officials and trainee teachers. Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin  Nyunt said: As is known to all, the government is systematically implementing  education promotion programmes and youth nurturing programmes with the aim of  training student youths of today to become human resources of quality who  will strive for the modernization and development of the nation.

Then Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee the Secretary-1 presented model  trainee awards to junior assistant teacher U Win Min , Daw San Yi and prizes  to other trainees.  The Secretary-1 accepted cash donations made by trainees.  After the ceremony, the Secretary-1cordially conversed with trainee teachers.


(3) Traditional Medicine Practitioner Course No 3 opens

Uplift of health and education is basic need for emergence of healthy and  qualified national force

YANGON, 1 Oct - A ceremony to open Traditional Medicine Practitioner Course  No 3 was held at the Institute of Traditional Medicine in Mandalay yesterday  evening, addressed by Chairman of Myanmar Health Committee Secretary-1 of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were member of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, ministers,  senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, Traditional Medicine  Department and officials, traditional medicine practitioners, the principle  of the Institute of Traditional Medicine, course instructors and trainees.

The Secretary-1 said traditional medical practitioner courses are being  conducted to enhance the qualifications of traditional medicine practitioners  who are important in realizing the aims to promote traditional medicine and  to improve public health care through traditional medicine.

The Secretary-1 elaborated on the formation of the Traditional Medicine  Department, promulgation of the Traditional Medical Council Law and formation  of the 11-member Traditional Medical Council, opening of 50-bed traditional  medicine hospitals in Yangon and Mandalay, and 16-bed hospitals in Pathein,  Ayeyawady Division, Myeik, Taninthayi Division, Myitkyina, Kachin State,  Taunggyi, Shan State, and Pyay, Bago Division. He said more 16-bed hospitals  will be opened in Mawlamyine, Mon State, Sittway, Rakhine State, Monywa,  Sagaing Division, this year. Magway in Magway Division, and Hpa-an in Kayin  State will get 16-bed hospitals in 2001. Two hundred township tradition  medicine clinics, and 14 district tradition medicine clinics have been  opened. Rare and potent herbal and medicinal plants have been cultivated on  200 acres at nine herbal gardens.

The government is making arrangements to organize the Myanmar Traditional  Medicine Physicians Conference and Myanmar Traditional Medicine Exhibition in  Yangon. It is also required to form Myanmar Traditional Medicine Physicians  Association. Myanmar traditional medicine physicians should collectively  strive to bring out potent medicines and medical science and to promote and  propagate them. Though the government is giving assistance from all sectors  for progress of the traditional medicine sector, emergence of brilliant  traditional medicine physicians and the use of potent and standardized  medicines are more important. Thus, Senior General Than Shwe has given  guidance to open courses to uplift the qualifications of the traditional  medicine practitioners.

In accord with the guidance, course are being conducted. A total of 122 have  completed the first course and another 100, the second course. Traditional  medicine practitioners from all different places of the nation can get the  opportunity to exchange experiences and knowledge at the courses. It is  believed that the courses will offer effective medical knowledge and methods  to the trainees. Arrangements are under way to open Traditional Medicine  Practitioner Courses in Yangon also. In addition to the present Traditional  Medicine Institute, a Traditional Medicine University will be opened. The  project to open the university has been included in the four-year national  education promotion programme. The government will continue to provide  assistance for holding of courses that will lead to progress of the  traditional medicine.

In conclusion, he urged the trainees to strive with the might of the  traditional medicine to uplift the health and fitness of the entire Myanmar  people in order to get Myanmar to be on a par with international countries;  to strive with national conviction for systematic progress of Myanmar  traditional medicine, upgrading the quality of medicines, emergence of potent  treatment methods and for getting traditional medicine to catch up with the  western medicine; and to preserve and uplift the standard of potent medicines  and treatment methods for their perpetuity. Seventy trainees are attending  the one-year course. The Secretary-1 and party also inspected Mandalay  International Airport.


(4) Course on computerize medical record networking and international  classification of diseases opened in Mandalay

YANGON, 1 Oct-A ceremony to open the course on computerized medical record  networking and international classification of diseases was held at the  Health Planing Department (Upper Myanmar) of the Ministry of Health in  Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay this morning.

Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony.

Commander Maj- Gen Ye Myint and minister for Maj-Gen Ket Sein said that the  Health Planning Department (Upper Myanmar) under the ministry of Health  will assume responsibility for drawing health plans, implementing the health  information system and carrying out research and training programmes,  coordination work and health education programmes. The division health  committee is providing assistance to enable the departments to carry out the  tasks smoothly.

The government is opening multimedia classrooms at the education sector and  providing assistance to install computerized medical record networking  medical record networking at the health sector.

The course is the first of its kind conducted in Upper Myanmar and will  contribute to the efforts for keeping health development of Yangon- and  Mandalay in balance.

The Ministry of Health has invited not only government hospitals and clinics  but also private clinics to participate in setting up the health information  system of Myanmar.

Personnel from five private clinics will also attend the course. The minister  also elaborated on lectures to be given at the course. Afterward , Residence  Representative of WHO Dr Agostino Borra made a speech.  Then, the Secretary-1  and party and the guests inspected the training hall.  Altogether 34 trainees  are attending the course , which will last 10 days.


(5) Secretary-2 accepts donations for orphans of training schools

YANGON, 1 Oct-A ceremony to donate cash and kind for the orphans of the  training schools under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and  Resettlement was held at Kyaik Waing Youth Training School in Mayangon  Township this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and  Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and  Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and senior military officers, Director-General  U Sit Myaing of Social Welfare Department and officials and donors.

The Donors to Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein who presented  certificates of honour to them. Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa spoke words of  thanks to the donors. The Secretary-2 then delivered a speech. He said the  ministry is rendering assistance to social requirements of human beings  throughout their life.

Under it are 424 childcare, woman care, old age care and disable care  centres. Staff at different levels of the centres are making efforts for the  smoothness of functions at the schools. The schools under the ministry are  conducting care activities in accord with their respective aims. The  Secretary-2 and party and the attendance had the souvenir photos taken  together.

Cash donated for construction of monastery in Thawuthti, India

YANGON, 1 Oct-A ceremony to donate cash for construction of Myanmar Buddhist  monastery in Thawuthti, India, by the Ministry of Commerce, was held at the  meeting hall of the Ministry this morning, attended by State Peace and  Development Council Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were Sayadaws led by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha  Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Sirindabhivamsa,  Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Religious Affairs U  Aung Khin, senior military officers, departmental heads, Head of Office U  Khin Latt and officials, guests and wellwishers.

First, Joint Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee administered  the Five Precepts. Then, the Sayadaws recited the parittas. Afterwards,  Secretary of Missionary Group (Local and Abroad) Pahtamakyaw Dhammacariya BSc  Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Maha Swinsara Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara of Bogon  Ward, Insein Township, explained the purpose of donation. Next, the  Secretary-2, ministers, deputy minister and departmental heads presented  offertories to the Sayadaws. Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone presented K 10  million for the construction of the monastery to the Secretary-2.

Then, donators to the Secretary-2 and Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone who  presented certificates of honour to the wellwishers.

After that, the Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee  delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. Later, the Secretary-2  performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the  ceremony. After the ceremony, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and ministers offered  soon to the Sayadaws.

Rice and cash donated to nunneries in Sangyoung

YANGON, 1 Oct-Tatmadaw families and well-wishers presented rice and cash  towards the funds for 250 nuns of Thameikdawdaya Thu khitayama Daw Nanacari  Myanaung Nunnery on Kyundaw Street and 50 nuns of Kyundaw Kyaungtaik on  Bagaya Road in Sangyoung Township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of  the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special  Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe.

Also present were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement  Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, officials, well wishers and nuns. First, the Secretary-2  and wife offered provisions to the Chairman of Yangon Division Sangha Nayaka  Committee (Weluwun) Sayadaw. Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Soe Thein,  Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and General Staff Officer (Grade-I)  (Air) Lt-Col Ohn Maung Maung presented rice donated by Tatmadaw families to  Nayaka of Myanaung Nunnery Nun Agga Maha Ganthavaaka Daw Khemari,  Administrative Nun Agga Maha Ganthavaaka Daw Jeyavati and Nayaka of Kyundaw  Kyaungtaik Nun Daw Esananani.

Then, the Secretary-2 and wife and family presented K 20,000 to Presiding  Nuns. Well-wishers also donated provisions and K 923,070 to the nuns.  Similarly, well-wishers presented donations to nuns who will take part in the  Dhammacariya Examination. Later, the congregation shared merits gained.


(6) Laotian delegation visits Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image,  National Indoor Stadium-1

YANGON, 1 Oct-The visiting Laotian delegation led by Chairperson Madame  Onechanh Thammavong of Laos Women’s Federation, currently here at the  invitation of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, accompanied by  Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Central Executive  Committee members, arrived at Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on  Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township at 8 am today.

They were welcomed there by Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe,  No 3 Military Region Commander Col Win Maung and officials of the working  committee for construction work of Mindhamma Hill. In the briefing hall,  Chairman of Religious Affairs Sub-committee for all-round Construction Work  of Mindhamma Hill Adviser to the State Peace and Development Council Office U  Arnt Maung explained the finding of the marble stone to be carved for Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image at Sakyin Hill in Sakyin Village, Madaya  Township, Mandalay Division, conveyance of the Image along Ayeyawady River  and progress in construction work on Mindhamma Hill. Then, delegation members  paid obeisance to the Image and made donations towards the fund of the Image.  After that, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and delegation members  proceeded to National Indoor Stadium-1 in Thuwunna, Thingangyun Township, at  9 am.

Chairperson of Myanmar Women’s Sports Federation Professor Daw May May Yee,  Vice-Chairperson Professor Daw Mya Mya and CEC members, Director-General of  the Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik and officials  welcomed the delegation. MWSF Chairperson Professor Daw May May Yee explained  activities of MWSF. Then, Myanmar athletes demonstrated their skills in  Myanma Thaing, Myanmar traditional Chinlon, aerobic exercises, weight-lifting  and Wushu events.


(7) Minister leaves for Brunei to attend ASEAN Meeting

YANGON, 1 Oct- Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe left here by air  this morning to attend the Sixth Meeting of the ASEAN Transport Ministers to  be held in Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei on 4 and 5 October. The minister was  seen off at Yangon Airport by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung,  Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for  Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, the Ambassador of Brunei, officials of  departments, enterprises and school under the ministry.

36th Anniversary Myanmar Police Force Day observed

YANGON, 1 Oct- The 36th Anniversary Myanmar Police Force Day which falls on I  October today was held at the assembly hall of Ministry of Home Affairs at  3.30 PM today.

Present on the occasion were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Col Soe  Win, Deputy Director General Police Brig-Gen Hla Tuns commanders of MPF,  directors and MPF members.

Director-General of MPF Col Soe Win delivered a speech. Then,  Director-General of MPF Col Soe Win presented prizes to Police Inspector Tun  Min ,Police 1\cpl Kyaw Kyaw , WO/sgt and l/cpl levels for 2000.

Then, police deputy director-general and commanders of MPF presented prizes  to outstanding prize winners of MPF in the Police Code and Conduct contest  and winners of the cleanest staff apartment prizes.

This morning, a ceremony to offer “ soon” to the Vice-Chairman Sayadaw of  State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee and members of the Sangha was held to mark  the 36 Anniversary Myanmar Police Force Day at the office of Ministry of Home  Affairs.


(8) Myanmar delegation back from WB-IMF meetings

YANGON, 1 Oct - A Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Finance and Revenue  U Khin Maung Thein arrived back here by air this evening after attending the  55th Annual meeting of World Bank and International Monetary Fund held from  23 to 28 September in Prague, Czech Republic.

They were welcomed back at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for  National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for  Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Col  Than Tun, departmental heads of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue,  officials and families of the delegates. Members of the delegation’ Governor  of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Director-General U Soe Lin of  Foreign Economic Relations Department, Deputy Director U Nyo Myint of Central  Bank of Myanmar, delegates of private banks’ Director-General U Kyi Shein of  Budget Department, Chairman of Kanbawza Bank Limited U Aung Ko Win and  Vice-Chairman U Khin Maung Aye of Cooperative Bank Limited’ also arrived  back.

The 55th Annual Meeting of World Bank and International Monetary Fund was  held at the meeting hall of Congress Centre from 23 to 28 September in  Prague, Czech Republic. It was attended by the financial ministers of 182  member countries of WB and IMF, governors, delegates and guests. Minister for  Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein delivered an address at the meeting.  He elaborated on current economic and financial situations all over the  world, agricultural, industrial, construction and economic projects being  implemented for the development of the Union of Myanmar. He explained in  detail about these projects being successfully implemented on the basis of  own financial resources of the country. The meeting ended on 28 September.

While in Prague the minister and party attended coordination meeting of  financial cooperation among Finance Ministers of ASEAN membership nations,  and coordination meeting of financial cooperation between Finance Ministers  of ASEAN member nations and Finance Ministers of Japan, China and Korea. The  minister took part in the discussion for cooperation among ASEAN nations and  between ASEAN nations and three dialogue partner nations. Minister U Khin  Maung Thein met with Director Mr PD Christ of Fritz Werner Co Ltd, Germany;  Director Mr A Klemm of G&D Co, Germany; Chairman Mr T Inokuchi of Mitsui  Marine & Fire Insurance Co and cordially discussed matters related to  bilateral cooperations. On his way back home while in Singapore, the minister  met with Director Mr S Hanbury of Deutsche Asset Management, Germany and  Vice-Chairman Mr B Subianto of Goldwater Oil Co, Indonesia and party and  cordially discussed matters related to bilateral cooperations.


(9) International Day of Older Persons observed

YANGON, 1 Oct- A ceremony to observe the International Day of Older Persons  for Year 2000 was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this  morning with an address by Chairman of the National Committee for Observance  of the International Day of Older Persons Minister for Social Welfare, Relief  and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.

Also present were Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, officials,  members of Working Committee for Observance of the International Day of Older  Persons, older persons from the homes for the aged in Yangon Division, guests  and well-wishers.

The minister said that according to the resolutions of the 52nd Conference of  the UN General Assembly and recommendations of the 35th Commission for Social  Development, the Economic and Social Council of the UN designated Year 1999  as the International Year of Older Persons and 1 October 1999 as the  International Day of Older Persons on 20 July 1997.

Since 1999, the International Day of Older Persons has been observed. This is  the second time the International Day of Older Persons has been observed.

As Myanmar is a member of the UN, the day is observed, and the aim is to  honour older persons in accord with Myanma traditions and culture.

According to the traditions of Myanmar, obeisance is made to the older one,  respects are paid to the one of the same age and consideration is shown to  the younger one. These traditions have firmly taken root in the society of  Myanmar. In the society of Myanmar, Myanmar people live together in extended  International Day family groups consisting of grandparents, parents,  children and grandchildren. Sons and daughters always take pride in attending  to the needs of their grandparents and parents.

In conclusion, the minister urge Myanmar well-wishers to open homes for the  aged at necessary places under supervision of the government: to uplift the  morale and of the aged in looking after them: and to preserved the tradition  of looking after the aged.

The donation totalled K 2,249,900 including by well-wishers. Minister,  deputy minister and officials accepted the donations and presented  certificates of honour to the will-wishers. Then, Minister Maj- Gen Sein Htwe presented K 870,000 for Homes for the Aged  in states and divisions to the officials.  Later on behalf of the older person  , Daw Ngwe Nyunt, 66, of Shwe Than Lwin Home for the Aged spoke words of  thanks.

Health care provided to older persons in Shwedaung Township

YANGON, 1 Oct- As a gesture hailing the International Day of Older Persons,  health care services for older persons, organized by Shwedaung Township  Maternal and Child Welfare Association, was held at Sasana Beikmandaw in  Shwedaung on 28 September morning. Chairman of Township Peace and Development  Council U Hla Win Tin, member U Tun Khin, Dr U Kyaw Nyein and Chairperson of  Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Khin Saw Thein and  members, surgeons, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association  and MCWA took part in health care services for members of the Sangha, nuns  and older persons of wards and village-tracts of Shwedaung Township. The  group also provided medicines for them.


(10) 27 members resign from Myinmu Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 1 Oct-Twenty-seven members resigned of their own accord from the  National League for Democracy of Myinmu Township, Sagaing Division.  Twenty-seven members of Myinmu Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own  accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myinmu Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned  on 11 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics  of NLD.
