(1) Construction work of Gandakuditaik continues
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township, where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is kept, was crowded with members of the Sangha, nuns and devotees today. The construction work of Gandakuditaik is being carried out by engineers and employees of the Public Works.  Sculptors U Taw Taw and sons are carving the image daily. Wut associations recited religious verses on the hill from 7 am to 10 PM daily. The health clinic and traditional medicine dispensary were opened to provide health care services on Mindhamma Hill. Donations by the public have amounted to K 64,355,400 from 5 August to date.

Course in Diplomacy No 2/2000 concludes
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- The course in Diplomacy No 2/2000 for officers of departments, organized by the  Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded at Wun-zin Minyaza Hall of Shin Dithapamauk building of the ministry  this morning. Present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin  Maung Win, Myanmar Ambassadors, directors-general, rectors, deputy directors-general, departmental  officials, instructors and trainees.

At the ceremony, Minister U Win Aung gave a speech and presented  certificates to the trainees. A total of 39 officer trainees from Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign  Affairs, Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development and Ministry of Commerce attended the  17-week course from 5 June to 28 September.

Minister receives Ambassadors of Australia, Pakistan
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing received Ambassador of Australia Mr Trevor Wilson at his office at 9 am today. Also present at the call were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and Head of Office U Nyan Linn. Similarly, the Minister met Ambassador of Pakistan Mr Mian Yousuf Shah at his office at 2 PM today. Also present were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Director-General of the General Administration Department U Aung Thein and Head of Office U Nyan Linn.
  
Director of Asia and Pacific Region of Department of State of US calls on departmental officials
 
YANGON, 29 Sept-Asia and Pacific Region Director Mr Jim Callahan of Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, Department of State of the United States of America, accompanied by Charge d'Affaires  ai of the US Embassy and Assistant Resident Representative Mr Guillaume Le Hegarat of UNDCP Office  called on Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun, Head of Department of  the Office of Strategic Studies Col Kyaw Thein of the Ministry of Defence at MPF Headquarters this morning.
 
They discussed drug eradication of Myanmar and implementation of projects in cooperation with UNDCP.  Also present were General Staff Officer (Grade-1) of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Col  San Pwint, Joint-Secretary Police Col Kham Aung of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control and Director  U Nyi Nyi of Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department.
 
UMFCCI Vice-President leaves for Thailand
 
YANGON, 29 Sept-Vice-President of the Union of Myanmar Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Htain  Win left here for Thailand by air today. The Vice-President will attend Seminar on Golden Opportunities of the  Sub region to be held in Changmai from 29 September to 1 October 2000, Meeting for GMS Business Forum  to be held in Bangkok on 3 and 4 October, and Consultation between ASEAN-CCI and ASEAN Economic  Ministers (AEM) to be held in Changmai on 5 and 6 October. He was seen off at the airport by UMFCCI  President U Win Myint, General Secretary U Zaw Min Win and officials.
 
Forestry Ministry holds four-monthly meeting
 
YANGON, 29 Sept - The Ministry of Forestry held its second four-monthly meeting at Myanmar Timber  Trade Centre-MTTC of the Myanma Timber Enterprise this morning, with an address delivered by Minister for  Forestry U Aung Phone.
 
The minister discussed matters relating to the income of the ministry and its contribution to the GDP, teak and  timber production, progress in implementation of the forestry sector and dry zone greening projects,  introduction of UTM land survey system, conducting of the demarcation task, prevention of illegal logging and  timber smuggling, implementation of the ministry's plans and future tasks. Present at the meeting were  advisers and officials of the ministry and directors-general and managing directors and personnel  concerned of the Planning and Statistics Department, the Forest Department, the Myanma Timber Enterprise,  the Survey Department, and the Dry Zone Greening Department under it.

Workshop and Seminar on Strong Motion Network in Myanmar opens
 
YANGON, 29 Sept - Meteorology and Hydrology Department and World Seismic Safety Indicative  co-sponsored the Workshop and Seminar on Strong Motion Network in Myanmar at MHD this morning, with  an address by Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe.
 
 Speaking on the occasion, the minister said the aim of the workshop was to prevent and reduce the danger  of earthquakes; Myanmar also had faced powerful tremors which caused loss of life and property. Thus,  every earthquake can lower the nation's economic growth rate. It is time systematic plans and projects are  being laid down and implemented for emergence of a peaceful, pleasant, modern and developed nation.  Seismic records are required in implementing the plans and projects. In one way or another, the results of  the meeting will help in implementing the bridge, dam and road projects needed in building a peaceful,  pleasant, modern and developed nation.
 
 The minister thanked the officials of the Japanese company and WSSI for their assistance.President of WSSI  Dr Hanesh Shah explained points about earthquakes. Director-General of MHD U Htay Aung presented gifts  to Dr Hanesh Shah and members of WSSI. Also present were heads of departments and institutions under  the Ministry of Transport, guests and representatives of the departments. The workshop continued on 30  September.



(3)  MoU for donation of seismometers between Myanmar and China signed 
 
YANGON, 29 Sept-A ceremony to sign the Memorandum of Understanding for donation of two sets of  seismometers between the Ministry of Science and Technology of Myanmar and the Ministry of Science  and Technology of China was held at the meeting hall of the International Business Centre at 8 am this  morning.
 
 It was attended by Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Deputy Ministers for Science and  Technology U Hlaing Win and U Nyi Hla Nge, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, heads of  departments from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Science and  Technology, Ambassador of China to Myanmar Mr Ling Dong, on behalf of the Ministry of Science and  Technology of China, and officials of Chinese Embassy. Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and  Ambassador of China to Myanmar Mr Ling Dong signed the Memorandum of Understanding and exchanged  the documents.
 


 
(4) National Convention Convening Commission meets
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- The National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting at the hall of the  Commission at 2 PM today. Present at the meeting were Chairman of the National Convention Convening  Commission Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and commission members. At the  meeting, National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management  Committee presented matters related to the National Convention. The National Convention Convening  Commission members gave suggestions. After hearing the reports, Chairman of the meeting Maj-Gen Saw  Lwin gave the concluding remarks and the meeting came to a close in the evening.



(5) Agriculture and Irrigation Ministry holds four-monthly meeting
 
YANGON, 29 Sept - The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation held its second four-monthly meeting for  2000-2001 at Myanma Farms Enterprise this morning, addressed by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation  Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin.  Also present at the meeting were Deputy Ministers for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and  enterprises under the ministry and other officials.
 
Speaking on the occasion, the minister spoke of the need to strive to exceed the planned targets in order to  boost production of the agricultural sector, to produce surplus paddy, to extend yield of edible oil crops and  industrial crops, to raise per acre yield of all crops, to introduce quality seeds, to designated special irrigation  zones, to widely disseminate agricultural techniques to farmers and to make arrangements to cultivate crops  year round. Officials then discussed matters relating to arrangement being made to cultivate pre- and  post-monsoon crops, provision of necessary equipment, and extended cultivation of edible oil crops and  industrial crops. The meeting continues on 30 September.

 MWSF honoured for Sport and Universality award
 
YANGON, 29 Sept-A ceremony to honour the Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, which was given  Sport and Universality award by Year 2000 International Olympic Committee through Myanmar Olympic  Committee, was held at the Women's Development Centre of Social Welfare Department on Than Lwin  Street, Kamayut Township, this afternoon.
 
 Leader of the Panel of Patrons of MWSF Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members, Chairperson of MWSF  Professor Dr Daw May May Yi and executives attended the ceremony. Professor Dr Daw May May Yi  explained about the ( award and the purpose of holding the honourary ceremony.
 
Then,  Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented certificates to the well-wishers. Later, Dr Daw May May Yi  donated K 20,000 for Women's Development Centre of Social Welfare Department to Management Officer  Daw Kyin Nu, and the ceremony came to an end.

Soe Kyaw Naing leading Third Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- The Third Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001, co-organized by Myanmar  Golf Federation and Myanmar Professional Golfers' Association and mainly sponsored by Rothmans of Pall  Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, continued for the second day at Lashio Golf Club in Lashio, Shan State (North), this  morning. In the Professional Division, first leg champion Soe Kyaw Naing led in the first position after  shooting a seven-under-par 65 in the second round totalling 138 (73+65). Myint Thaung and Myint Shwe tied  in the second position three strokes behind the leader with 141 strokes each. Aung Win put his position in  the third with 146 and Win Aung in the fourth with 148.
 
 In Amateur Division, Zaw Zaw Latt was still leading in the first position with 140 (72+68) strokes. Nay Lin  Tun with 147 (74+73) and Yin Aung Latt 147 (73+74) tied in the second position. Tiger Beer, Yangon  Airways, Canon, Star Cola (MGS Beverages) and Wilson also sponsor the tour with the aims for turning out  of golfers all over the country and raising of the Myanma golf standard. The tour is being organized by Han  Golf Masters Pte Ltd. The third round of the tour continues tomorrow.
 


 
(7) Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 32 conclude excursion tour
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 32 of the University for Development of  National Races led by Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si and supervisor teachers, left here by car for the University  yesterday morning.  They arrived at Thayawady Ceramics Factory of Myanma Ceramics Industries under the Ministry of  Industry-1 at 8.45 am yesterday. Chairman of Thayawady District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col  Ohn Myint extended greetings. Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries U Than Shwe and Factory  Manager U Kyi Sein explained facts about Myanma Ceramics Industries and the factory. Then, officials of  Myanma Ceramics Industries presented K 50,000 for the welfare funds of the University.
 
A trainee spoke words of thanks. Afterwards, they observed production process at the factories. In the  afternoon, the trainees of UDNR arrived at No 1 Factory (Sinde) of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries  under the Ministry of Industry-2 in Padaung Township. Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Machinery  Industries U Than Tun extended greetings. General Manager of the factory U Kyaw Kyaw explained facts  about the factory. Rawan national Maung Joun Si, on behalf of the trainees, spoke words of thanks. The  factory manager and trainees exchanged commemorative pennants. Secretary of Padaung Township Union  Solidarity and Development Association U Han Win Zaw presented gifts to the trainees. Then, the trainees  toured the factory.



(8) CCDAC Secretary inspects Shwepyitha rehabilitation and drug addicts treatment camp
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- Secretary of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Director-General of  Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, accompanied by the Joint-Secretary of CCDAC and  officials, in-charge of the rehabilitation and drug addicts treatment and research division Dr Ba Thaung and  officials of Prisons Department, Social Welfare Department, Myanma Agricultural Service and Directorate of  Livestock and Fisheries, inspected Shwepyitha rehabilitation and drug addicts treatment camp in Pyay  Township, Bago Division (West), yesterday afternoon.
 
At Shwepyitha Camp, Commander of Bago Division (West) Police Force Police Col Aung Daing, In-charge of  the Camp Police Major Lein Hong and departmental personnel welcomed them and reported on tasks being  undertaken. Then, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and party inspected vocational training courses for the trainees,  agriculture and livestock breeding and tasks of the rice mill, and gave necessary instructions. The MPF  Director-General proceeded to Wethtigan No 2 Police Training School in the evening. The MPF  Director-General met Commandant of the training school Police Lt-Col Salai Ba Sein and police officers and  gave instructions on turning out outstanding police members.

5,950 stimulant tablets seized in Taunggyi
 
YANGON, 29 Sept - A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police  Force, acting on information and lying in wait at Shuhmyawkhin Street, Region-11, Thittaw Ward, Taunggyi,  Shan State (South), on 19 September, searched Sai Kham Mon, son of U Hla Kyaw, of Uyin Ward, Banyin,  and Aung Aung, son of U Aung Tin, of Wapya Street, Region-5, Kyaungkyisu Ward, Taunggyi, who arrived  at that place to push drugs. Altogether 5,950 stimulant tablets were seized on their persons. Further  investigation was followed by the arrest of Sai Twan Kham, son of U Kyaw Hla, of Mingalar Ward, Banyin,  and Sai Kyaw Moe, son of U Hla Kyaw, of Uyin Ward, Banyin. Action is being taken against them according  to the Narcotic Drugs and Psycho-tropic Substances Law.
 


 
(9) Voters of Pyay Township unanimously petitions for dissolving pessimist NLD
 
YANGON, 29 Sept- The people from Pyay Township, Bago Division, expressed no support for pessimist  National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolving it at rallies in Khittaya Airport, Paungtale Village  and Wethtigan Village on 2 September morning.
 
At Khittaya Airport in Pyay, 15,628 voters from 26 wards and village-tracts attended the rally. On behalf of  attendance's, U Aung Than of Nawin Ward expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for  dissolving it. U Shwe of Nawin Ward, on behalf of voters of wards and villages, presented petitions signed  by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Nwe  Nwe San. The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes." A total of  8,019 voters from 13 village-tracts attended the rally in Paungtale Village. On behalf of local people, U Nyan  Tin of Byugon Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. U Win Shwe  of Letpandaw Village, on behalf of voters of villages, presented petitions signed by the people to member of  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Htwa Tin. The ceremony ended with  the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main Nation! al Causes."
 
Similarly, 10,800 voters from 23 village-tracts attended the rally in Wethtigan Village. On behalf of local  people, U Thein Myint of Wethtigan Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for  dissolving it. U Myint Aung of Hnawgan Village, on behalf of the voters of villages, presented petitions  signed by the voters to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U  Shwe. The ceremony ended with the chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes." There are  101,817 eligible voters in Pyay Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and  signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 99,542 or 97.77 per cent.
 
25 Tatkon Township NLD members resign of own accord
 
YANGON, 29 Sept-Twenty five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Tatkon  Township, Mandalay Division. Twenty five members of Tatkon Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their  own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Tatkon Township Multiparty Democracy General  Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 22 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate  in party politics of NLD.
