YANGON, 27 Sept- Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of sympathy to His Excellency, Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, on the loss of lives and property as a result of recent devastating floods in West Bengal, eastern state of India. YANGON, 27 Sept- Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has sent a message of sympathy to His Excellency Mr Tran Duc Luong, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, on the loss of lives and property as a result of recent severe floods in Vietnam caused by incessant monsoon rains.


(3) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Gandakuti Kyaungdaw on Mindhamma  Hill

YANGON, 27 Sept-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this evening arrived at Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is to be kept.

Engineers of Public Works reported to the Secretary-1, the ministers and the deputy ministers on construction of Gandakuti Kyaungdaw where the image is to be kept. The Secretary-1 and party inspected progress of work for the construction of foundation and sculpturing work being undertaken by stone sculptor U Taw Taw and sons. The Secretary-1 then gave instructions. The Secretary-1 met devotees and left the hill in the evening. Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on Mindhamma Hill was crowded with members of the Sangha and devotees. Soft drinks were served to the devotees. Wut associations recited the parittas from 7 am to 10 PM. Well-wishers donated cash for the image and Finance Sub-committee opened donation centre on the hill.


(4)Secretary-1 receives Chairperson of Women's Federation of Lao PDR

YANGON, 27 Sept- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairperson Madame Onechanh Thammavong of Women's Federation of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and party, currently here, at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 5 PM today.

Also present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet. The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham.

Chairperson of Lao Women's Federation visits Kyauktan, National Museum

YANGON, 27 Sept-Chairperson Madame One-chanh Thammavong of Women's Federation of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and party, currently here at the invitation of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, together with Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and executives arrived at the delivery room of MCWA in Kyauktan Township this afternoon.

The Lao women's delegation viewed the medical treatment being given to pregnant women at the delivery room. Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented Ovaltine to pregnant women and mothers. The delegation members inspected sewing course, tailoring course, confectionery work and day care centres in Kyauktan Township and left there in the evening. Chairperson Madame Onechanh Thammavong and members together with executives of MMCWA visited the Shwedagon Pagoda this morning. The Lao delegation offered flowers, lights and, joss stick at the Aryonkhan Tazaung of Southern Stairway and offered Shwe-thingan to Buddha images at Northern Stairway of the pagoda.

The Lao women's delegation member proceeded to National Museum on Pyay Road and were welcomed there by Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe, Director of the National Museum Daw Nu Mya Zan and officials. Then, the Lao delegation inspected the museum and Chairperson Madame Onechanh Thommavong signed in the visitor' book of the museum.

Ambassador U Linn Myaing presents credentials to King of the Belgians

YANGON, 28 Sept-U Linn Myaing, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Belgium, presented his credentials to His Majesty King Albert II, King of the Belgians on 20 September 2000, in Brussels.

Delegates who attended ASCOE leave for home

YANGON, 27 Sept-The delegates from ASEAN nations who attended the Eighth Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Education (ASCOE) hosted by Myanmar for the first time, left here for home by air this morning and evening respectively. They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department of the Ministry of Education U Tin Nyo, Deputy Director-General U C Thang Zatwin and officials.

Two students from YTU get consolation prizes in international level Architecture Design Contest

YANGON, 27 Sept-Two Myanmar students won consolation prizes in the international level architecture design contest for university students entitled "Sustainable Building for the 2000", co-sponsored by Oxford Brookes University, England and University of Florence, Italy. Sixty-five groups of 94 university students from England, Italy, Spain, Greece, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, Malaysia, South Africa, Germany, Austria, Norway and Myanmar participated in the contest. Ma Chaw Kalya and Ma Htet Htet Zaw, who are fifth year Architecture students from Yangon Technological University, sent the designs for renovation of old buildings to Oxford Brookes University and won consolation prizes.

UDNR trainees continue excursion in Yangon

YANGON, 27 Sept - Trainees of Primary Teachership Course No 32 of the  University for Development of National Races (UDNR) continued excursion in  Yangon today. Accompanied by their leader Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si,  supervisor teachers and accommodation and reception officials, the UDNR  trainees arrived at No 1 Oil Refinery of Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise, the  Ministry of Energy, in Thanlyin Township, in the morning.

In the meeting hall of the plant, the refinery manager U Aung Din extended  greetings and explained salient points of the refinery. Two trainees, on  behalf of the trainees, and the refinery manager exchanged commemorative  pennants. Afterwards, a trainee thanked the staff of the refinery. Officials  then conducted the trainees around the plant.

On arrival at Kyaikkauk Pagoda, the trainees were welcomed by Chairman of  Thanlyin Township Peace and Development Council U Aye Kyaw Maung and member-1  Police Capt Ko Lay of Township Police Force of the Myanmar Police Force and  members of the pagoda board of trustees. A member of the pagoda board of  trustees U Kyaw Thein extended greetings and explained the history of the  pagoda. Two trainees, on behalf of the trainees, and Chairman of the pagoda  board of trustees U Thaung Shwe exchanged commemorative pennants. Pro-Rector  Daw Khin Si Si, on behalf of the trainees, presented a collective donation of  K 6,000 to U Thaung Shwe.

A trainee spoke words of thanks. They then paid obeisance to the pagoda. They  then went to Shukintha Amusement Park of the Parks and Playgrounds  Department, Yangon City Development Committee. YCDC member U Aung Soe, on  behalf of the Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay, extended greetings.

Two trainees, on behalf of the trainees, and Head of the Department U Nyunt  Pe exchanged commemorative pennants. A trainee thanked the YCDC officials.  Lunched was hosted in their honour. They enjoyed modern rides and bowling at  the park. On arrival at Myanma Radio and TV, they were welcomed by  Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay, the deputy director-general and  officials. Director-General U Khin Maung Htay extended greetings to them at  Studio A.

A trainee thanked the MRTV officials. Two trainees, on behalf of the  trainees, and Director-General U Khin Maung Htay exchanged commemorative  pennants. Officials explained points of MRTV with audio-visual aids. The  trainees then studied broadcasting, telecasting and TV programming.


(6) Health Care, Leadership and Management Course concludes

YANGON, 27 Sept - Health Care, Leadership and Management Course No 3/2000 of the Health Department, the Ministry of Health, concluded at Health Workers Training School, Dragon Township, this morning, with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Et Sein.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers for Health Prof Dr Mya Oo  and Prof Dr Kyaw Myint, deputy directors, medical superintendents, invited  guests, course instructors and trainees. Speaking on the occasion, Maj-Gen Ket Sein said the ministry is striving to  ensure an international level health care system in offering treatment and  launching disease control programmes.

It is also striving to develop the human resources sector in accord with the  guidelines laid down by the State in order to produce qualified health  service persons. The role of nurses is an important in implementing these  projects. The task of the nurses is noble; they will become qualified by  attending such courses.

Nurses should make efforts for the effective implementation of the ministry's  tasks. The minister presented gifts to the trainees who were outstanding in  the course and certificates to all the trainees who had completed the course.  Assistant Director (Nurse) of Shan State (East) Health Department Office Daw  Yi Yi May, on behalf of the trainees, spoke words of thanks. The ministry is  conducting courses continuously to bring out qualified health service persons  in implementing health care tasks. Thirty-four officer nurses of the Ministry  of Health and Defence Services Hospitals had completed the course.


(7) Commander of Yangon Command greets UDNR trainees

YANGON, 27 Sept- Chairman of Management Work Committee for UDNR Trainee  Excursion Programme Member of the State Peace and Development Council  Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon  Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than greeted the trainees of Primary Teachership  Course No 32 of the University for Development of National Races (UDNR) at 7  PM today.

The ceremony was held in a hall at No 1 Transit Centre (Bayintnaung). It was  also attended by Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board Dr  Than Nyunt and CSSTB members,  officials, UDNR trainees and invited guests.  Shwe Myintmo Anyient troupe of Yangon Command entertained the commander and  party and trainees. Afterwards, the commander presented honorary cash awards for the trainees to  the UDNR Rector Col Zaw Min Thein and honorary cash award for the Anyient  troupe to its leader. Trainees Ma Nang Yein May Hnin Oo and Ma Zon Htan, on  behalf of the trainees, presented the UDNR commemorative pennant to lead  dancer of the Anyient troupe Ni Ni Myint and comedian Khin Hlaing.


(8) Myanmar delegation attends 21st Century Buddhism Culture Meeting

YANGON, 27 Sept-At the invitation of Chairman of Chunte Buddhists'  Association of the Republic of Korea Venerable Jeon Won Duk, Vice-Chairman of  the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta  Sirindabhivamsa, members Bhaddanta Candasiri, Bhaddanta Ariyabhivamsa,  Director-General of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the  Sasana U Sann Lwin and Head of Office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs U  Maung Maung Myint attended the 21st Century Buddhism Culture Meeting held on  22 September.

At the opening ceremony of the Meeting, Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta  Sirindabhivamsa delivered a speech, and in the afternoon, U Sann Lwin read  out the paper on living style of Myanmar nationals in accordance with  Myanmar's Theravada Buddhism and Singalovada Sutta. The representatives of  Chunte Ganas from Japan, People's Republic of China and USA and about one  thousand members of Chunte Gana of the Republic of Korea attended the  Meeting.


(9) National Workshop on Drugs Strategy Myanmar held

YANGON, 27 Sept-The opening ceremony of the National Workshop on Drugs  Strategy Myanmar sponsored by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control  (CCDAC) and UNDCP was held at the Hotel Equatorial on Alanpya Pagoda Road,  here, at 9 am today.

Secretary of CCDAC Director-General of the Myanmar Police Force Pol Maj-Gen Soe Win, Assistant Representative of UNDCP Yangon Mr Guillaume Le Hegarat and Project Coordinator of UNDCP Bangkok Mr Brion Duncan made speeches on the occasion. Matters relating to the development of procedures and techniques and improvement of skills in gathering and exchanging news among the drug abuse control teams will be discussed at the workshop. Also present on the occasion were officials of the Ministry of Defence, CCDAC, the Supreme Court, the Attorney General' Office, the Customs Department and MPF. The workshop continues till 29 September.

296 drug-related cases exposed in August

YANGON, 27 Sept-The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department exposed 296 drug-related cases in August. The authorities seized 62.4942 kilos of opium in 24 cases, 87.137 kilos of heroin in 96 cases, 3.0589 kilos of opium oil in 5 cases, 2.0293 kilos of low-grade opium in 14 cases, 11.2476 kilos of marijuana in 45 cases, 4.95 litres of Phensedyl in two cases, 376,277 stimulant tablets in 52 cases, 481.47 kilos of Ephedrine in five cases, 29.96 litres of cough syrup in two cases, 3.516 kilos of opium powder in two cases, 0.0005 kilo of stimulant powder, 4.5 kilos of chemical powder, 42 cases for failure to register and seven other cases.

The Tatmadaw regiments and units seized 4.8978 kilos of opium in one case, 0.0336 kilo of heroin in two cases and 191 kilos of Ephedrine in two cases.  The MPF seized 5.0694 kilos of opium in 12 cases, 0.3675 kilo of heroin in 70 cases, 0.0106 kilo of opium oil in one case, 1.9212 kilos of low-grade opium in 13 cases, 9.1821 kilos of marijuana in 41 cases, 4.95 litres of Phensedyl in two cases, 13,421 stimulant tablets in 28 cases, 285.67 kilos of Ephedrine in three cases, 29 litres of cough syrup in one case, 0.131 kilo of opium powder in one case, 42 cases for failure to register and seven other cases.  Seizures made by the Tatmadaw and the MPF were 51.5262 kilos of opium in 11 cases, 86.7359 kilos of heroin in 24 cases, 3.0483 kilos of opium oil in seven cases, 0.1081 kilo of low-grade opium in one case, 2.0655 kilos of marijuana in two cases, 362856 stimulant tablets in 24 cases, 4.8 kilos of Ephedrine, 0.96 litre of cough syrup in one case, 3.455 kilos of opium powder in one case, 0.0005 kilo of stimulant powder and 4.5 kilos of chemical powder. Action was taken against 421 culpritsÑ330 men and 91 women in 296 cases in August.

Drug possessor gets 15 years

YANGON, 27 Sept-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and Myitkyina Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Daw Me of Lonkhin Village in Phakant Township, and arrested her together with 4.245 kilos of raw opium kept in a tin box on 3 July. The Phakant Police Station filed her under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Myitkyina District Court sentenced Daw Me to fifteen years' imprisonment under section 19 (A) on 21 August 2000.

Stimulant pills seized in South Okkalapa

YANGON, 27 Sept-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit  and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Ma Naw  Aye San, daughter of U Ar Khwee, of Thanthuma Street, Ward (14/2) in South  Okkalapa Township, and arrested her together with 130 stimulant tablets  bearing the word "WY" on 9 August. Action was taken against her in accord  with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(10) Voters of Nattalin Township unanimously petition for dissolving  pessimist NLD

YANGON, 27 Sept-The people from Nattalin Township, Thayawady District,  expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and  petitioned for dissolving it at the rallies held in Nattalin Township Sports  Ground and Zeebinkwae Village Sports Ground on 27 August respectively.

A total of 5,500 people from 48 wards and village-tracts rallied in Nattalin  Township Sports Ground. On behalf of local people, Merchant U Myint Thein of  Ywama Ward expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for  dissolving it. U Aung Myo of Zeegongalay Ward, presented petitions signed by  the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission U Htain Min. Similarly, 3,500 people from 34 village-tracts  rallied in Zeebinkwae Village Sports Ground in Tapon Village-tract.

On behalf of local people, Farmer U Hla Shwe of Tapon Village expressed no  support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolving it. U Kyaw Nyunt of  the same village presented petitions signed by the people to member of the  Township Election Sub-commission U Yee. The ceremonies ended with the  chanting of the slogan "Our Three Main National Causes." There are 99,268  eligible voters in Nattalin Township. The number of people, who expressed no  support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, is 99,233 people  or 99.96 per cent.

57 Thabyugon Village-tract NLD members, Labutta Township resign of own accord

YANGON, 27 Sept-Fifty-seven members resigned from the National League for  Democracy of Thabyugon Village-tract in Labutta Township, Ayeyawady Division.  Fifty-seven members of Thabyugon Village-tract NLD, Labutta Township,  Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of  resignation to Labutta Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 19 March 2000 as they no longer  wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
