Present on the occasion were Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Ministers and Deputy Minister, ambassadors of ASEAN member nations to Myanmar, the chairman of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Education and delegates of ten ASEAN member nations, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat, observers and guests.
Minister for Education U Than Aung made an opening speech. He said: It is my great pleasure indeed to be with all of you this morning at the opening of the 8th Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Education. The Government of the Union of Myanmar, through the Ministry of Education is honoured and proud to host this important meeting. It is also coincided with the blessed hosting of the ninth ASEAN Youth Day Meeting (AYDM-IX) last month, 10-12, August in Yangon. I am very pleased to meet delegates from ASEAN nations on this auspicious occasion. I would like to extend to all our ASEAN colleagues, brothers of kith and kin, a very warm welcome to the capital of Myanmar. To all, I say "MINGALAR BA" in Myanmar gesture of greetings and wishes for your personal well-being and pleasant stay while you are here with us.
Since the founding of ASEAN brotherhood over the past 30 years or so, we constantly put our heads together in intellectual unity and in a mission of close co-operation among neighbouring countries. We are here not only for the vision of a changed and united ASEAN, but with the means of bringing it to pass. We are here now with a mind free from the trammels of conventions and precedents but in our ASEAN way of thinking and doing in a new spirit fresh every year.
We are here with a renewed one heart, one will, one goal: the dedication to live together in a higher plan of action for our respective country in a wholesome attitude to pass it on to our younger generations. It is a heartening assurance that every ASEAN country is on the track of the regional and global "Economic and Financial Recovery" which has effected nearly all of us in recent years. Honestly speaking, the root cause of the world's state is not of economic, the cause is rather moral issue and inhumanity imposed upon us. This may be overcome with the common denominator of our national need: the moral and spiritual recovery and technical competency through promoting the important role that education plays in the development of a highly knowledgeable and employability skills in the best mobilization of human resources.
The first-ever and recent ASEAN Students Exchange Programme at the secondary level hosted by Malaysia in July 2000, has been an evidence of promoting friendship, moral uplift and spiritual awakening among the ASEAN youths in many ways. Myanmar sent 3 boys and 3 girls accompanied by a team leader and one supervisor. The three ASCOE flagship projects, the two on-going projects and the new project proposals, forwarded and advanced would surely foster opportunities to strengthen inter-personal relationships, understanding and co-operation in areas of common interest which have been firmly envisaged and declared in the Hanoi Plan of Action (HPA) of 1998 and in ASEAN Vision 2020. In this opportune time allow me to express Myanmar's efforts in recent years. The Government of the Union of Myanmar has always highly prized and regarded education as top national priorities and policy.
In a bid to uplift the education standard of the entire national people, Basic Education plays a fundamental role. At the Basic Education Sector, the Education Promotion Programmes have been implemented by means of three Phases since 1998. With regards to international co-operation in education, Myanmar plans to further accelerate co-operation in education with other ASEAN countries and to participate actively in all activities of ASEAN Universities Network (AUN). All efforts will eventually help Myanmar integrate with the ASEAN education systems. At this meeting, we will hear progress reports of the ASEAN Education Sub-Committee over the last period and their plan of action for the coming year. Myanmar hopes to learn and exchange experiences in education and training in order to contribute to our ASEAN integration process.
May I wish you all good health and happiness and the meeting to be a significant success. Our meeting here today is only the beginning of a new commitment to inculcate in our young children the spirit of friendship, co-operation and understanding. It takes a passion. I trust that everyone of you will respond to its high challenge. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen, for your kind attention. Then, Chairman of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Education Director-General of No 1 Basic Education Department U Tin Nyo extended greetings. After the ceremony, the ministers, the deputy ministers and delegates to the meeting had photos taken.
