(1) Monks, nuns and devout Buddhists throng Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 24 Sept - Members of the Sangha, nuns and devout Buddhists who came to pay homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image, crowded Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township today. Employees of the Public Works continued building Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi where the Image will be kept. Sculptors U Taw Taw and sons are carving the Image daily.

Wut associations recited religious verses from 10 am to 10 PM. Well-wishers made donations to the funds of the Image. Altogether 800 employees led by Managing Director U Kyin Tun of Newest Garment Manufacturing Co Ltd of Dagon Myothit (South) donated K 116,000 to the funds of the Image. Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko accepted the donations. Donations received from 5 August to date totalled K 60,434,946. The donation centre is opened at Mindhamma Hill from 7 am to 9 PM daily.


(2) Secretary-1 attends merit-sharing ceremony for renovation of eastern Aryonkhan Shwedazaung of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 24 Sept-A merit-sharing ceremony for renovation of eastern Aryonkhan Shwedazaung, in conjunction with a ceremony to consecrate Buddha Images in the Tazaung, was held at the Shwedagon Pagoda this morning, attended by Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were State Ovadacariya Shwekyin Nikaya Joint-Sasanabaing Ovadacariya of Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees Sirimanta Sankyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Rajindabhivamsa and members of the Sangha, Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, deputy ministers, members of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda, Development Association, departmental heads, members of the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees, well-wishers Shwe-Thanlwin Company family and guests.

First, members of the Sangha consecrated the Buddha Images in the Tazaung. Then, Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Rajindabhivamsa administered the Nine Precepts. The members of the Sangha recited the Parittas.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party and well-wisher Shwethanlwin Co family members presented offertories to members of the Sangha. Next, well-wishers U Thein Win-Daw Ni of Shwethanlwin Co handed over documents related to renovation of eastern Aryonkhan Shwe-Tazaung, to the Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees.

Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Ovadacariya of Shwedagon Pagoda Board of Trustees Aungmyebonsan-kyaung Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Paindabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits. After the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt performed rituals of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony. Shwethanlwin Co family spent K 80 million for renovation of Myanma handicraft and decoration works at the Tazaung.


(3) Secretary-1 inspects construction of Thabbinnyu Stupa, monastic education schools in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 24 Sept- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the construction site of Thabbinnyu Stupa in Ward 5 of Mayangon Township at 1 PM today.

First, the Secretary-1 paid obeisance to ancient Buddha images. Then, the Secretary-1 heard reports on progress in building the Stupa presented by Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung and officials, and attended to their needs.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the construction site of the Stupa. After that, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Yadana Beikman Monastic Education School in Ward 5 of Mayangon Township. The Secretary-1 paid homage to Presiding Nayaka of the school Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Canobhasa. After supplicating on condition of the school, the Secretary-1 fulfilled the requirements. Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the newly-constructed two-storey building of the school.

After that, the Secretary-1 and party arrived at Padaukshwewa Monastic Education School in Ward 5 of Mayangon Township. First, the Secretary-1 and party inspected progress in construction of the building of the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw. Then, they paid homage to Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pavara and left there in the evening.


(4) Secretary-1 attends opening of multi-media teaching centre of Tamway BEHS 5

YANGON, 24 Sept - The multi-media teaching centre of the Basic Education High School No 5 of Tamway Township was opened with ceremony at 9.15 am today at the school. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt graced the ceremony by attending and delivering an address.

Present on the occasion were Ministers, Deputy Ministers, well-wishers, the Deputy Director-General and officials of the No 3 Basic Education Department, the Township Education Officer, headmasters, members of school board of trustees, parent, teacher association members, Headmistress of the school Daw Tin Kyi, teachers and students.

First, Headmistress Daw Tin Kyi and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Hla Shwe formally opened the multi-media teaching centre by cutting a ribbon.

Then, Myanmar Education Committee Chairman State Peace and Development Council Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the signboard marking the opening of the centre by pressing a button.

Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the display media room, computer application Secretary-1 attends opening of multi-media room, computer aided instruction room, audio visual teaching system, handicraft practical room, drawing room, music room, etc and observed the demonstration of skills by the students. Afterwards, the opening ceremony of the multi-media teaching centre was held in the assembly hall of the school.  Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Hla Shwe explained matters on exerting efforts for opening the multi-media classrooms.

Then, the Secretary-1 handed over teaching video tapes, cassette tapes to Headmistress Daw Tin Kyi. Then, wellwishers handed over cash donations for the school.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Minister for Education U Than Aung accepted the donations. In addressing the ceremony, the Secretary-1 expressed thanks to those who made concerted efforts for opening the multi-media classrooms. The Secretary-1 also stressed that it is also incumbent upon the students to pursue education zealously and exposing their wits and talents to become intellectuals and intelligentsia on whom the country can rely on. After the opening ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party posed for group photographs with school trustees, parent-teacher association members, teachers and students.


(5) Gradual progress of State-owned, private, joint-venture industries will lead to emergence of industrial nation

YANGON, 24 Sept - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected factories of the Ministry of Industry-2 in Dagon Myothit South Industrial Zone this morning.

Accompanied by Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, and officials, the Secretary-2 heard a report on factories being set up by the ministry at the zone presented by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

Officials of the ministry reported to the Secretary-2 and party on establishment of Myanmar Suzuki Co Ltd, assembling of cars and motorcycles, production of transformers, building of factories to produce plastic containers of batteries, bolt nuts, oxygen and acetylene, labour, water and power requirements, establishment of industries, management, and maintenance of buildings. The Secretary-2 and party were conducted around the Suzuki Auto and Motorcycle Factory.  They also inspected establishment of the battery, bolt nut and acetylene factories, installation of machines, and test production. The Secretary-2 and party also visited other factories.

During his meeting with officials, the Secretary-2 said it is satisfactory to see progress of the ministry's industries within a short period. Efforts are being made for progress of agricultural and industrial sectors for development of the national economy based on agriculture, he said. Priority is being given to the progress of small and medium industries of the private sector, he stressed. The State is taking the responsibility to set up heavy industries which require large amounts of capital.

Ministers Brig-Gen Lun Maung and U Thaung gave suggestions for industrial development. An official of Soe Electric and Machinery Company said transformer production business is gaining success due to the ministry's cooperation. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin said based on the counsel given by the Secretary-2, the ministry will make efforts for the development of its functions. The Secretary-2 looked into the requirements and left the zone.


(6) Tatmadaw families, well-wishers offer provisions to monasteries in Dagon Myothit (South) Township

Yangon, 24 Sept- Tatmadaw families and well-wishers donated provisions to Five Nikaya Pitakat Thonbon, Mingalayama and Ywama Sarthintaiks in Dagon Myothit (South) Township at Five Nikaya Pitakat Thonbon Sarthintaik this morning.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the ceremony. Also present were Presiding Nayaka Sayadaws of the Sarthintaiks, officials and well-wishers.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Presiding Nayaka of the Sarthintaik Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita. Tatmadaw families' The Secretary-2 and officials donated provisions to the Sayadaw. Senior military officers offered rice donated by Tatmadaw families to Myingyan Sayadawgyi. Then, well-wishers donated provisions to presiding Nayaka Sayadaws. The Commander, ministers and deputy ministers accepted donations for the Sarthintaiks.


(7) Delegates arrive to attend Eighth Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Education (ASCOE)

YANGON, 24 Sept- De-legates of Thailand, Singapore and Indonesia arrived here by air this morning to attend the Eighth Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Education (ASCOE) to be hosted by Myanmar for the first time.

They were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Director-General U C Thang Zatwin of No 1 Basic Education Department and officials. Similarly, delegates of Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Laos arrived here by air this evening.

Officials of No 1 BED welcomed them at the airport. Likewise, the high-ranking officer of the ASEAN Secretariat arrived here by air yesterday morning. Director-General of No 1 BED U Tin Nyo and officials welcomed them. The Eighth Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-committee on Education (ASCOE) will be held in Yangon on 25 and 26 September.


(8)Minister attends donation ceremony to mark International Day of Older Persons

YANGON, 24 Sept-A ceremony to donate a day's meal to Hninzigon Home for the Aged to mark International Day of Older Persons, was held at the Home on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this morning.

Present were Chairman of Leading Committee for Holding International Day of Older Persons Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, officials and members.

First, Chairman U Maung Maung Tin spoke words of thanks. Then, the minister presented prizes to the aged persons who won in essay competition to mark International Day of Older Persons.

After that, the minister presented K 30,000 for a day's meal to the aged people at Hninzigon Home for the Aged and medicines to Chairman U Maung Maung Tin and officials. Next, members of Working Committee for Holding International Day of Older Persons presented 210 packets each of Myanmar traditional medicine donated by Hmancho Medical Clinic, to the aged. Similarly, the minister and party went to Khayan Home for the Aged and donated K 7,000 for a day's meal of the aged, blankets and medicines, this morning. The officials of Khayan Management Board of Home for the Aged accepted the donation. Later, the minister gave instructions to the officials and friendly conversed with the aged.


(9) UDNR trainees tour downtown Yangon

YANGON, 24 Sept- Trainees of Primary Teacher-ship Course No 32 of the University for Development of National Races, led by Rector Col Zaw Min Thein, together with Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si and supervisor teachers and accompanied by officials of Reception and Accommodation Subcommittee, toured downtown Yangon this morning.

At the Memorial to Fallen Heroes, Chairman of Maintenance Committee for Memorial to Fallen Heroes Brig-Gen Myo Myint and officials welcomed the trainees. Captain Kyaw Swa Tun explained facts about the Memorial to Fallen Heroes. Brig-Gen Myo Myint presented souvenirs to the trainees. At the Shwedagon Pagoda, on behalf of the trainees, Pro-Rector Daw Khin Si Si donated K 5,000 to the funds of the pagoda. They then visited Dagon University and the University of Culture. At National Indoor Stadium-1, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint extended greetings to the trainees. Later, they visited Mingala Market.


(10)Third Myanmar Travel Show in Bangkok on 17-18 Oct

YANGON, 24 Sept- The Directorate of Hotels and Tourism today announced that hotel and tourism entrepreneurs and agents of airlines wishing to participate in the Third Myanmar Travel Show to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, on 17 and 18 October, may enlist at Tourism Promotion Division of DHT.


(11) 23 Pale Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 24 Sept-Twenty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing Division. Twenty-three members of Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
