(1) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image crowded with pilgrims and devotees

YANGON, 18 Sept-Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is being kept was crowded with pilgrims and devotees today. Under the close supervision of Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, removing of the steel cables which were used in keeping the Image upright was completed by engineers and workers at 6 PM today. Stone sculptors were carrying out the tasks in making the Image look sublime. Donations made by the devotees towards the Image from 5 August to date amounted to K 54,151,000.


(2) General Maung Aye inspects development of Bhamo Township

YANGON, 18 Sept-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye together with Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the commanders, the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials yesterday left Mandalay for Bhamo by Tatmadaw flight after attending the inauguration ceremony of Mandalay International Airport.

General Maung Aye met Tatmadaw members and families of regiments and units under Bhamo Station at Teingya Minkhaung Hall. General Maung Aye and party inspected regiments in Bhamo Station. The General and party inspected development of Bhamo. General Maung Aye and party went to Zeya Mingala Sasana Beikmandaw and paid obeisance to Sayadaws of Kyaungtaiks in Bhamo.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kusala, 88, of Theinmaha Kyaung-taik presented pictures of Seinphudaw of Theinmaha Pagoda to General Maung Aye and the Secretary-2. Congregation received the Five Precepts from the Sayadaw of Theinmaha Kyaungtaik. General Maung Aye and party presented offertories to the Sayadaw.

The General and party visited Shwekyina Pagoda. The General and party signed in the visitor’s book and the General donated cash. The Secretary-2 and the Secretary-3 together with the ministers and deputy ministers met chairmen of Bhamo District and Bhamo Mansi, Momauk and Shwegu Township Peace and Development Councils and members, departmental officials, service personnel and members of various associations. Chairman of Bhamo District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Swe reported on requirements on education and health sectors and installation of auto- telephone.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on extended cultivation of monsoon paddy, oil crops, beans and pulses, sunflower, mustard and rubber and efforts to boost the yield of crops. Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi reported on work undertaken by the ministry.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on implementation of road and bridge projects for equitable development in States and Divisions. Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung reported on measures undertaken for human resources development.

Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung reported on production and sale of personal and household goods for import substitute. Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung reported on work of Radio Myanmar, TV Myanmar and newspapers.

Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha reported on economic development in Kachin State, development of Bhamo District and other sectors. Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein reported on the ministry’s work.

Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin reported on education and development affairs.

The Secretary-3 said that Bhamo District has favourable conditions to extend cultivation work and promote regional trade.

Then, the Secretary-2 said that the ministers and the deputy ministers have explained working programmes and policies in detail, and employees are to strive for regional development, following working programmes and policies.

Then, the ceremony came to a close. The General and party left Bhamo for Mandalay by helicopter at 9 am today.

They arrived back here in the evening via Mandalay. The Secretary-2, together with the ministers, the deputy ministers, the deputy commander and officials, attended the opening of Thanmyanthu (Mandalay) Dental Clinic and Denture Enterprise on 78th Street between 33rd and 34th streets in Chanayethazan Township in the afternoon.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Director of Resettlement Brig-Gen Aung Thein formally opened the enterprise. The Secretary-2 formally unveiled the signboard of the enterprise, and inspected modern dental equipment.

Then, the Secretary-2 and party cordially conversed with students participating in the band troupe and pom-pom troupe at the opening ceremony. Members of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung Thaung, U Soe Tha and U Thaung met with secretaries, executives and organizers of district and township-level USDAs at Bhamo District and Bhamo, Moemauk, Mansi and Shwegu Townships at the office of Bhamo Township USDA this morning.


(3) Secretary-1 inspects Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) Project

YANGON, 18 Sept - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the site of Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) Project being implemented by Special Bridge Construction Project Group-1 of Public Works in Insein Township this morning.

Deputy Minister U Tint Swe, Managing Director U Nay Soe Naing and officials reported on facts about the project, condition of the main bridge and approach structures and construction of approach roads.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on tasks to be carried out in connection with the project. Then, the Secretary-1 gave instructions. Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) is linking Insein and Hlinethaya Townships.

The bridge is 3,415 feet long, and the four-lane motor way on it 52 feet 6 inches wide. There are two 6-feet-wide pedestrian lanes, on each side of the bridge. The bridge can bear 60-ton loads. Employees of Public Works are working hard to complete the bridge ahead of schedule.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the putting of finishing touches on the bridge. Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected construction of four-lane Shwepyitha Bridge Road undertaken by Yangon City Development Committee. The road, 4.6 miles long, stretches from Hline River Bridge (Shwepyitha) up to Yangon-Pathein Highway. Later, the Secretary-1 and party went to the junction of Yangon-Pathein Highway, Anawrahta Road and Shwepyitha Bridge Road, and inspected preparations for construction of a roundabout. Officials reported on construction work. The Secretary-1 gave instructions and left Hline-thaya later in the morning.


(4) Secretary-1 receives Member of House of Representatives of Japan

YANGON, 18 Sept- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Member of House of Representatives of Japan Mr Seiken Sugiura and party at the guest house of the Ministry of Defence at 5 PM today. Also present at the call were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman’s Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department. The Member of House of Representatives of Japan and party were accompanied by Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori.


(5) Military Attaches tour Myitkyina, Putao, Mandalay

YANGON, 18 Sept- Dean of Military Attaches Corps Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea Col Lee Nae-chan and military attaches, accompanied by senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, toured Myitkyina and Putao of Northern Command area and Mandalay of Central Command area and arrived back here yesterday evening.

On 14 September morning, the military attaches left for Myitkyina by Tatmadaw aircraft. They were welcomed at Myitkyina Airport by member of the Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win and officials, the traditional cultural troupe and local people.

Joint-Secretary of Kachin State Regional Work Committee Maj Soe Tint explained the development tasks done in Kachin State. In the evening, the Military Attaches, together with Deputy Commander Brig-Gen San Tun, played the golf friendly at Myitkyina Golf Club and enjoyed scenery of Ayeyawady River by Kanshin Ship.

At night, the Commander hosted a dinner at the lawn of Malikha Yeiktha in honour of the Military Attaches. They then enjoyed Kachin Manaw dance together with local Kachin national race.

On 15 September, the group, accompanied by Tactical Operations Commander Col Han Myint, visited Bala Min Htin Bridge and the confluence of Maykha and Malikha rivers. Then, they visited the Traditional Cultural Museum of Kachin State. In the evening, the group left Myitkyina Airport for Putao Airport by Tatmadaw aircraft.

Next, they observed Molashedi Village. At Molashedi, they passed through the newly opened Molashedi Suspension Bridge. Then, they wore traditional costume and enjoyed traditional dances with Rawan and Lesu national races. The national races served the Military Attaches with traditional meals and sold local products.

At Khakaborazi Yeiktha in Putao, Tactical Operations Commander Col Han Myint hosted a dinner in honour of the Military Attaches.

On 16 September morning, the group visited Myinthaaye Pagoda in Putao and left for Mandalay. In the evening, the Military Attaches and military officers played goodwill golf at Mandalay Hill Golf Course. Yesterday morning, they attended the opening ceremony of Mandalay International Airport in TadaU and visited the airport. After that, they observed Htaik Aung Nan Myanma Handicraft Enterprise of U Bo Wa-Daw Nwe Nwe Ohn, Mandalay Zaygyo Market and Yadanapura Myanma Handicraft Beikman. Later, they left Mandalay Airport and arrived back here in the evening.


(6) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 18 Sept-National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of its office at 2.30 PM today.
Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and commission members. Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin made a speech at the meeting.

National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters relating to the National Convention. Members of National Convention Convening Commission took part in the discussions. Afterwards, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.


(7)Ministry of CPT holds review meeting

YANGON, 18 Sept - The Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs held a meeting to review work performance up to August in the 2000-2001 fiscal year and to coordinate implementation of remaining tasks. Present at the meeting were Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, the general manager of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, managers of state and division, the director-general of Posts and Telecommunications Department and directors. Speaking on the occasion, the minister said requirements for extending communication facilities should be presented at the meeting.

The ministry’s target has been extended from over K 6.19 billion up to over K 6.74 billion. Systematic measures are to be taken to realize the income target and to use funds. Posts and Telecommunications Department should provide supervision to ensure that the public is using communication facilities in accord with the rules and regulations and to expose illegal use of communication equipment. Staff welfare programmes should be carried out in accord with the principles. State/division managers of MPT reported to the meeting on accomplishments and work remaining to be done. The general manager of MPT and the director-general of the PTD attended to their needs.

In his concluding address, the minister said the ministry’s revenues in the first five months of the fiscal reached over K 2.97 billion or 44 per cent of the target of over K 6.74 billion mark. Means should be sought to increase the foreign currency income of the ministry. Staff of the ministry of strive to win public trust and reliance. The staff of the communication should make efforts for the betterment of their operations in helping to increase the nation’s income.


(8) Yangon Mayor meets Ambassador of Nepal

YANGON, 18 Sept-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay met Ambassador of Nepal to Myanmar Gen Satchit Shumshere J B Rana at his office at 10 am today. Also present were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Joint- Secretary U Kyi Win, committee members of YCDC, heads of departments and officials.


(9)Officials of UMFCCI meet Malaysian delegation

YANGON, 18 Sept-A four-member Malaysian de-legation led by Executive Director Mr Abdul Razak Baginda of Malaysian Strategic Research Certre called on President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, Vice-President U Htein Win and CEC members at the office of UMFCCI here at 2.30 PM today. They cordially discussed matters related to economy and investment.


(10)Former Thai Prime Minister and President of Chart Thai Party concludes visit

YANGON, 18 Sept-Former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand and President of Chart Thai Party Mr Banharn Silpa-Archa and party left here for home this morning. They were seen off at the airport by Director-General of Protocol Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thura U Aung Htet and officials, Ambassador of Thailand to Myanmar Mr Pensak Chalarak and officials.

First round of 16th Tatmadaw Under-21 Soccer Tournament continues

YANGON, 18 Sept- Four groups of the first round of the 16th Defence Services Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Under-21 Soccer Tournament continued at the respective zones this evening. In Group (A) of South-East Command Zone in Mawlamyine, Yangon Command defeated Northern Command 5-0. No 11 LID beat Defence Services (Navy) 4-1 in the Group (B) of South-West Command Zone in Pyapon. In Group(C) of Central Command Zone in Mandalay, North- West Command beat No 33 LID 4-1. South- Weat Command defeated Triangle Region Command 5-0 in the Group (D) of Souththern Command Zone in Toungoo.

Prizes presented to winners in Inter-Ministry Table-Tennis Tournament

YANGON, 18 Sept- The prize presentation ceremony of the Inter-Ministry Table-Tennis Tournament was held at the hall of Myanmar Table-Tennis Federation on U Wisara Road this afternoon. Present were MTTF President Police Chief of Staff Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win, Vice-Presidents Lt-Col Tin Thein, Police Lt-Col Aung Naing and U Aung Myint and officials. President Police Brig-Gen Zaw Win presented first prizes to Ministry of Rail Transportation women’s team and Ministry of Transport men’s team. Then, officials presented prizes to the respective teams. Later, Vice-President U Aung Myint presented best player awards to Aung Htut of Transport and Tin Tin Than of Home Affairs.


(12) Voters of Kalay Township of Sagaing Division unanimously petition for dissolution of pessimist NLD

YANGON, 18 Sept-People from Kalay Township, Sagaing Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of NLD at Tintha, Kyawywa, Natchaung, Taze, Myoma, Kyaungtaik, Mauklin and Sakhangyi Stations from 26 to 29 August. A total of 4,500 people from five village-tracts attended the ceremony held at Tintha. On behalf of local people, Peasant U Aung Hla of Tintha expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for its dissolution. U Aung Hla Pe of Kyaukphu Village, on behalf of local people from the villages presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Nyein Ko.

A similar ceremony was held at Kyawywa, attended by a total of 2,300 people from seven Village-tracts. On behalf of local people, U Nyi Lay of Kyawywa Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Aye Maung, on behalf of local people from the villages, presented petitions signed by the people to Secretary of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Tin Hlaing.

A total of 1,500 people from five village-tracts attended the ceremony held at Natchaung. On behalf of local people, U Pho Pyi of Natchaung expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Haran Don, on behalf of local people from the villages presented petitions signed by the people to member of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myint Wai.

A similar ceremony was held at Taze, attended by a total of 4,000 people from six village-tracts. On behalf of local people, U Chit Tin of Taze Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Pauk Sa of the same village, on behalf of local people from the villages, presented petitions signed by the people to member of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Khin Maung Aye.

A total of 10,000 people from five village-tracts and a ward attended the ceremony held at Myoma. On behalf of local people, U Thein Kyaw of Aungmingala Ward expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Ohn Shwe of Aungthitsa Ward, on behalf of local people presented petitions signed by the people to member of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Daw Than Than Aye.

A similar ceremony was held at Kyaungtaik, attended by a total of 5,100 people from four village-tracts. On behalf of local people, U Tun Maung of Kyaungtaik Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Win Hlaing, on behalf of local people from the villages, presented petitions signed by the people to member of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Dr Thein Win. A total of 5,400 people from four village-tracts attended the ceremony held at Letpanchaung Village, Mauklin. On behalf of local people, U Daung Hlaona of Letpanchaung expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it.

U Kan Hlan Htan, on behalf of local people from the villages presented petitions signed by the people to member of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Nyein Ko. A similar ceremony was held at Sagangyi, attended by a total of 10,000 people from ten village-tracts. On behalf of local people, Daw Waing of Sagangyi Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. Peasant U Ae Moe of the same village, on behalf of local people from the villages, presented petitions signed by the people to member of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Hlan Kho Man. There are 124,271 eligible voters in Kalay Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, is 111,105 people or 89.40 per cent.


(13) 37 Yamethin Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 18 Sept-Thirty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division. Thirty-seven members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 25 June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
