(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Chile

YANGON, 18 Sept-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Ricardo Lagos, President of the Republic of Chile, on the Independence Day of the Republic of Chile which falls on 18 September 2000.

Yangon, 17 Sept- Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye delivered an address at the inauguration ceremony of Mandalay International Airport this morning and unveiled the bronze plaque of the airport.

A ceremony to open the Mandalay International Airport of international standard in TadaU Township, Kyauk-se District, was held at Mingala Mandat near the airport at 7.30 am.

Also present together with General Maung Aye were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the ministers, the deputy ministers, senior military officers, heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned, Dean of Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and Ambassadors, Dean of Military Attaches Military Attaché of the Republic of Korea Col Lee Nae Chan and military attaches, former prime minister of Thailand Mr Banharn Silpa Archa, officials of Myanmar Airways International and local airlines, guests, officials of Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Transport and Italian-Thai Development Public Co Ltd which built the airport, national entrepreneurs, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association , and local people from TadaU Township totalling over 15,000.

Daw Than Than Win and Daw Thida Swe of Myanma Radio and Television emceed the ceremony. The Secretary-3 extended his greetings to all, and said that the successful opening of an international airport which has characteristics of world-class airports, serves as a landmark in the history of Myanma air transport.

Moreover, it is a new step taken by the airport transport sector in a bid to build a new, modern and developed nation. Head of State Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance to build an international airport each having characteristics of world-class airport in upper Myanmar and lower Myanmar, at a time when Yangon International Airport was undergoing major renovations. Therefore, in accord with the guidance of the Head of State, Mandalay International Airport has been built in TadaU Township, Mandalay Division, upper Myanmar.

So the State Peace and Development Council saw to it that Yangon International Airport underwent major renovation and modern equipment for air traffic control and passenger transport services were provided. Mandalay International Airport opened today has characteristics of a world-class airport. The runway is 14,000 feet in length and 200 feet in width. Modern 747 Boeing planes can land and the runway is one of the longest ones in South-East Asia. Lifts, escalators, passenger boarding bridges, modern security equipment, modern computers and electronic apparatus and the baggage conveying system have been installed at the airport.

There are 26 international air routes passing through the air territory of Myanmar, and planes from domestic airlines fly in the air territory about 10,000 times every year and those from international airlines, about 60,000 times every year. Under these circumstances, the emergence of Mandalay International Airport which provides direct access to other countries can be regarded as yet another step taken to improve the foreign air transport sector of Myanmar.

Previously, the main air entrance to Myanmar linking other nations was just Yangon International Airport. Now, another main air entrance, Mandalay International Airport, has emerged. Therefore, transport services between cities of Myanmar and those of other countries are becoming more and more convenient, which can also contribute greatly towards development of domestic air transport services.

In conclusion, the Secretary-3 expressed his thanks to officials of Italian Thai Company, the Ministry of Construction, the Ministry of Transport and Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council and Tatmadaw members and former Thai Prime Minister Mr Banharn who gave encouragement for investment and construction work.

Then, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint said that for Mandalay Division, it is an auspicious day, when Mandalay International Airport has been opened successfully, and it is also the pride of Mandalay Division. The new airport will go along towards striving for regional development.

Next, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said that the development of the transport sector plays an important role in building a modern nation. The construction of modern airports and the use of the state of the art air traffic control system depict modernization and development of a nation. The building of Mandalay International Airport opened today is the ever greatest mammoth task in Myanmar. US $ 150 million and K 6,496 million were used to build Mandalay International Airport. In order to run the airport systematically, employees concerned were sent abroad to undergo training.

Afterwards, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun spoke of construction of the runaway, taxi way and apron of Mandalay International Airport in cooperation with the Public Works and the Ministry of Transport. U Mya Soe of TadaU Township, Kyaukse District, Mandalay Division, thanked officials.

General Maung Aye then said the government has been building irrigation networks, roads, bridges in addition to modern Mandalay International Airport for emergence of a peaceful modern developed nation. Stability in the State is the first requirement for emergence of a peaceful modern developed nation and the second is economic development of the State and the third one is fulfillment of human resources for a modern developed nation.

The General urged all to build a modern developed nation in harmony and in cooperation among the State, the people and the Tatmadaw after realizing the objectives and development of the State.

Next, the Secretary-2 presented gifts to Chairman Mr Permchai Karnasuta of Italian-Thai Development Public Co Ltd that built the Mandalay International Airport and Superintending Engineer U Boon Kyi of the project. General Maung Aye and party and guests took designated places.

At the auspicious time, member of State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe formally opened the airport.

The General formally unveiled the bronze plaque of the airport. The General and party and guests inspected the Mandalay International Airport. After the ceremony, the planes of domestic airways and those from Thai Airways International touched down at the airport.

The airport is located about seven miles south of TadaU and some 18 miles south-west of Mandalay and construction started on 21 March 1994. The area of the airport is 25,015 acres and its runway is the longest in South-East Asia. The concrete runway is 14,000 feet long and 200 feet wide. There are six passenger boarding bridges and three of them can handle modern Boeing 747-400 planes. The airport terminal is four-storey building. The basement is for storage of goods and maintenance of machines, the ground floor for arrival passengers and the first floor for departure passengers. The second floor consists of offices and meeting halls.

The airport will be able to handle 8,000 passengers a day and three million passengers a year. There are four fuel tanks with the total capacity of 582,000 gallons and filling system is modernized. Seven hundred cars can park at the car parking area infant of the radar-and-aviation indicators are also installed at the airport.


(3) Secretary-1 accepts donations for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 18 Sept-Cash donation for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is to be kept was held at central Mandat at the hill in Insein Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present were member of the Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, the attorney-general, deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, members of central committee for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill and well-wishers.

The Secretary-1 said well-wishers participated in doing meritorious deeds and construction of religious buildings under the leadership of the State Peace and Development Council.

Those who performed meritorious deeds will surely prosper, he said. He said thanks to the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image has safely been conveyed onto Mindhamma Hill from Madaya Township, Mandalay Division.

A large number of devotees paid respects to the image along the Ayeyawady river on its way to Yangon, he added. He said it is heartening to take delight in the well-wishers who donated cash generously for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image while the government is making efforts for conveying the image onto the Mindhamma Hill. Donations amounted to date were K 218,901,967 and US $ 4,000 and 1,000 FECs. The Secretary-1 and party inspected works on the hill.


(4) Secretary-1 inspects renovation work of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 17 Sept - Patron for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials, arrived at the southern stairway of Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

The chairman of the Work Committee reported on renovation work for Shwedagon Pagoda, Naungdawgyi Pagoda, the western stairway and its archway and prayer halls on the platform of the Shwedagon Pagoda and condition of distribution of documentary books on the hoisting of the new Shwehtidaw atop the pagoda. The Secretary-1 gave instructions on maintenance of retaining walls.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image on the upper terrace of Shwedagon Pagoda. Next, the Secretary-1 and party inspected renovation of prayer halls on the platform of the pagoda. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to Naungdawgyi Pagoda and inspected renovation work. The Secretary-1 and party also inspected renovation of the western stairway and its archway.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Pyilonaye Myinbahu Buddha Image near the eastern stairway of the pagoda, which will be conveyed to Phado, Kyaukdaga Township, Bago Division and kept there for public obeisance.


(5) Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of former Thai Prime Minister

YANGON, 17 Sept- Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted a dinner in honour of former Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand and President of Chart Thai Party Mr Banharn Silpa- Archa at the Karaweik Palace this evening. Also present were ministers, deputy ministers, heads of department and the Thai ambassador to Myanmar.


(6) Secretary-2 inspects agricultural work in Sagaing Township

YANGON, 17 Sept-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win and officials, inspected agricultural work in Sagaing Township on 16 September. First, the Secretary-2 and party inspected the long staple cotton farm of Myanma Cotton and Seri-culture Enterprise by Shwebo-Monywa motor-road in Nyaung Pin Zin village-tract in Sagaing Township.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on extensive distribution of strains to farmers and efforts to achieve the objectives of the farm. The long staple cotton field is 250 acres wide and a total of 240 acres have been put under long staple cotton such as ALRA 5166, Suraby, MCU-5 strains.

The Secretary-2 and party proceeded to all-season vegetable field of Sagaing Division and inspected vegetables and crops on 50 acres of land. At the briefing hall, Chairman of Sagaing District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Sein Ya and officials reported to the Secretary-2 and party on facts about the farm, measures taken to get water and electricity and the growing of vegetables, crops and fruit plants.

The secretary-2 gave necessary instructions. Then, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with Tatmadaw members and their families at the regional battalion in Sagaing.


(7) Minister visits Indagaw Industrial Region

YANGON, 17 Sept-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and party arrived at Indagaw Industrial Region in Bago Division this morning and were welcomed by the director-general, managing directors and officials. In the briefing hall, officials reported on construction of buildings, arrival of machinery and installation the minister and party.

Then, the minister and party inspected the construction of Radiator Plant, Metal Bearing Plant, Disc Wheel Plant, hostels for engineers, preparations on construction of buildings for power tillers’ spare parts workshop of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries. The minister also gave instructions to the responsible officials.


(8)Minister looks into poultry farms in DaikU

YANGON, 17 Sept-Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein together with Managing Director of Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise U Khin Maung Aye and officials, arrived at DaikU Feedstuff Industry and poultry farm in Bago Division and inspected the pigsties and the machinery and attended to the needs and met with the staff. At the farm, about 12,000 pigs are being raised and 1,500 piglets and about 40,000 viss of pork are distributed monthly.


(9)Minister inspects transportation services, department store, bran oil mill

YANGON, 17 Sept-Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and officials, arrived at No 1 transportation service of Ministry of Commerce at Yawmingyi Road in Dagon Township at 8 am this morning. In the briefing hall, U Soe Myint of Supervisory Committee for Transportation Services and the Deputy Minister reported in detail on the services to the Minister who gave necessary instructions.

Then, the Minister and party headed for No 2 transportation service at Khayay-bin Street in Dagon Township and heard the reports on the services of the officials. After leaving instructions there, they proceeded to Pyi Myanmar Department Store near Hledan Junction and gave instructions to the officials.

Afterwards, they went to No 3 Bran Oil Mill of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading at Ywama (West) Ward in Insein Township where General Manager U Than Tun Aung reported on process of refining edible oil. The Minister inspected the works of Drum Filter invented by the staff of MAPT and left instructions there.



(10)Writer Saw Mon Nyin leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 17 Sept-Writer Daw Yin Yin (Saw Mon Nyin), member of Myanmar Language Commission and national literary award winner, left here for Thailand by air this morning to attend Year 2000 SEA Write Award presentation ceremony to be held in Bangkok and to receive the award there.

Daw Yin Yin was seen off at the airport by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, officials and her family members. Chief Editor of Sarpay Beikman U Maung Hlaing (Maung Swe Nge) accompanied her.


(11) 21 MTA remnants exchange arms for peace in Tachilek
 

YANGON, 17 Sept-The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, is striving with might and main for national reconsolidation and emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Remaining armed groups came to realize the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the government and the fact that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation and retarded development of their respective regions. Hence, remnant armed groups have been exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

On 15 September, a 21-member group’ 19 armed group members and two family member’s led by clerk U Yan Myo Aung of remnant MTA armed group of Tachilek District, Shan State (East), bringing together with them 19 arms and 348 rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace at the local battalion in Tachilek. A ceremony to exchange arms for peace by clerk U Yan Myo Aung and members of MTA armed group was held at the hall of the local battalion in Tachilek on 15 September morning.

Also present on the occasion were Commander of Regional Control Command (Mongphyat) Brig-Gen Than Aung, senior military officers, Chairman of Tachilek District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thet Naing Win, officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades and Maternal and Child Welfare Association and local people totalling about 1,000.

Speaking on the occasion, the commander said that he warmly welcomed the group because it exchanged arms for peace, realizing the correct endeavours of the government and the Tatmadaw and abandoning their armed struggle line.

Now, national solidarity is becoming stronger due to the genuine goodwill of the Government; only when national solidarity is strong and peace and tranquillity reign in the country, can strenuous efforts be made for regional development; only then, will a peaceful, modern and developed nation emerge.

The commander urged the members of the armed group which exchanged arms for peace, to participate in regional development work. He also said that necessary assistance will be extended to them. The commander also invited the remnants of armed groups to exchange arms for peace and return to the legal fold. Then, U Yan Myo Aung and members handed over their arms and ammunition to Commander Brig-Gen Than Aung. Afterwards, Lt-Col Thet Naing Win presented cash assistance to those who exchanged arms for peace. Next, the commander cordially met with those who exchanged arms for peace. Departments concerned fulfilled their requirements and issued temporary citizenship cards to those who exchanged arms for peace.

More remnants of the armed group are going to exchange arms for peace.


(12) 39 Myittha Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 16 Sept-Thirty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myittha Township , Mandalay Division. Thirty-nine members of Myittha Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mandalay Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 28 July 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
