(1) Ovada sought from Sayadaws to carve Image

YANGON, 11 Sept-Central Committee for All-Round Development of Mindhamma Hill and work committees sought advice from Ovadacariya Sayadaws at a meeting on the hill this morning.

Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image will be placed on the hill for public obeisance.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt supplicated on religious matters. In his supplications, the Secretary-l said committees were formed in systematically conveying the Image from Sakyin Hill, Madaya Township, Mandalay Division, to Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, Yangon Division. Secretary of State Sangha Maha . Nayaka . Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara explained the requirements in carving the Image to become sublime. The Secretary-1 and Deputy Chief Engineer of Public Works U Aung Kyee Myint explained the architectural design of the Gandakuditaik with scale models.

The Sayadaws and the Secretary-1 and party then paid obeisance to the Image. The Secretary-l and party inspected the concrete laying of the foundation of the throne.



(2)  Secretary-1 pays homage to Sayadaws who attended Millennium World Peace Summit

YANGON, 11 Sept-Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Maha Nayaka Kyaungdawgyi on Thiri Mingala Kaba Aye hill at 9.30 am today.

First, the Secretary-l paid homage to members of the Sangha led by Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Sayadaw Bhaddanta Suriyabhivamsa and Secretary Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara who attended the Millennium World Peace Summit of the world's religious and spiritual leaders held at the United Nations. Then, the Sayadaws recounted their experience of the Summit.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party paid homage to the Sayadaws and left Maha Nayaka Kyaungdawgyi in the morning.


(3)  Approach roads upgraded, bridges rebuilt to bear 60-ton loads Khabaung Bridge opened as 114th facility since 1988

YANGON, 11 Sept-Khabaung Bridge across Khabaung Creek, constructed by Special Bridge Project Group-l under Public Works on Yangon-Mandalay Highway between Toungoo Township and Oktwin Township in Toungoo District, Bago Division, was commissioned into service this morning.

Chairman of the Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered a speech.

The Secretary-2, together with Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, deputy ministers, senior military officers, heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office and department and officials, went to Toungoo by Tatmadaw aircraft at 7.00 am.

The Secretary-2 and party left for Khabaung Bridge by car. The ceremony to commission into service Khabaung Bridge built on Khabaung Creek at the border of Toungoo Township and Oktwin Township took place at the pandal near the bridge at 8.45 am.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 said that Khabaung Bridge has been built on Khabaung Creek on Yangon-Mandalay Highway. As the highway is very busy, the previous bridge could not make for the smooth transport. So, the four-lane concrete bridge has been built. The bridge is 600 feet long and can bear 60-ton loads.

The Secretary-2 said building of roads and bridges is laying the essential foundation for emergence of a modern and developed nation. Emergence of modern and developed nation will be impossible without infrastructure. Efforts are being made to develop the transport sector, which has interrelations with national peace and progress. The national people desirous of peace and development are gladly welcoming nation-building tasks. The Secretary-2 presented gifts to staff who had built the bridge through their representative.

Commander Maj-Gen Tin Aye and Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the bridge. Maj-Gen Saw Tun unveiled the plaque. The bridge is 600 feet long. It has a 48 feet wide motorway and 6-foot pedestrian lanes on either side. Its clearance is seven feet in height and 60 feet in width. The steel reinforced concrete bridge can bear up to 60 tons. The length of approach structure in Oktwin Township is 750 feet and in Toungoo is 560 feet.


(4)  Secretary-2 inspects construction work, livestock breeding in Toungoo

YANGON, 11 Sept-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, together with member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye. ministers, deputy ministers, senior military officers, inspected construction of Sasana Beikman in Ward No 21 in Toungoo near Yangon-Mandalay Highway this morning.

Project Manager U Myint Oo of AryonOo Construction reported on progress of work.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions and inspected construction of two-storey Sasana Beikman which is 240 feet long and 90 feet wide.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the poultry farm of U Mein in Ward 20 in Toungoo. Farm in-charge Et Saw L Doe reported on the raising of RIR species fowls beginning 1969, sale of chicken, maintenance of the farm and production of feedstuff.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on the increased raising of RIR species fowls in four districts in Bago Division and efforts to make Bago Division become one on which the State can rely for livestock breeding.

The Secretary-2 and party went to Basic Education High School (Natsingon).The Secretary-2 and party watched students learning computer lessons at the computer training and e-mail room, the computer aided media room, the audio-visual media room and the computer-training hall.

Next, Seventh Standard student Ma Han Thi Thi Zaw recounted her experience of the 12th Children's Get-together of Asia and the Pacific held in Fukuoka in Japan.

The Secretary-2 and the commander presented cash for the school to administrative officer Captain Thet Lwin. The Secretary-2 and party inspected domestic science and handicraft rooms and art studio.  The Secretary-2 and party attended a ceremony to present donations for community welfare services of Southern Command. The Secretary-2, the commander, the ministers, senior military officers and officials accepted the donations. The Secretary-2 thanked the donors and greeted well-wishers.

In the afternoon, the Secretary-2 and party met officials of departments and companies that undertook reclamation of fallow and virgin land in eastern part of Bago Division at the meeting of the command.

The Secretary-2 said private entrepreneurs are permitted to engage in agriculture for development of agriculture sector. Although 19 companies promised to reclaim fallow and virgin lands, there are some weaknesses in reclamation of lands and cultivation. He spoke of the need for the companies to meet the targets. He stressed the importance of practical implementation of the work.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected poultry farm of the command. The Secretary-2 and party arrived back here in the evening.


(5)  Vietnamese artiste troupe arrives

YANGON, 11 Sept-A 15-member artiste troupe led Mr Nguyen Duc Trung of Vietnam arrived here this evening under the cultural exchange programme between the two countries.

Officials of the Ministry of Culture, Fine Arts Department and embassy of Vietnam welcomed the troupe at the airport.

The artiste troupe will entertain the public at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street at 7 PM daily on 14 and 15 September.


(6)  Commander, Minister inspect oil palm plantations, Taninthayi River Bridge

YANGON, 11 Sept-Secretary of  Leading Committee for Region-wise Agricultural Sector Development Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, together with Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Taninthayi Division Agricultural Sector Commander of Coastal Region Command Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, accompanied by departmental officials and Sub-committee members, inspected the oil palm nursery and plantations near Khonmaw Village, Myeik Town ship, being undertaken by Asia World Co and oil palm plantations of Myan Naing Myint Co in Zawei Village, .Taninthayi Township, on 9 September. The commander, the minister and those in-charge of the plantations discussed thriving oil palms cultivated previous year, progress of oil palm plantations which were cultivated this year, targeted acres for coming year,. distribution of seeds, progress of nursery farms, land preparation for coming year, use of machinery and fuel and staff welfare programme.

 Then, the commander and the minister attended to their needs. Next, the commander and the minister proceeded to the construction site of Taninthayi River Bridge 50 miles away from Myeik and inspected the construction project. The commander and the minister left instructions on work.


(7)  Minister inspects cultivation of monsoon paddy, construction of dams in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 11 Sept-Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by officials of Myanma Agriculture Service and Agricultural Mechanization Department, together with Chairman of Maubin District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Hlaing, inspected the 100acre model monsoon paddy field, Manawthukha paddy field and water outlets and inlets near Hsamalauk Village, Nyaung-don Township, yesterday.

The minister and party went to vacant, virgin and fallow lands and wetland reclamation project office Ayeyawady Division at Mogok-Deedok Wetland in Panta-naw Township.

Then, the minister met local farmers at the 100-acre model monsoon paddy field near Zayetkwin Village, Kyaunggon Township and gave instructions. The minister said that a total of 18 million acres of land--14 million acres of monsoon paddy and 4 million acres of summer paddy--is the target of the State, and farmers were urged to use cultivation techniques so as to produce 1,000 million baskets of paddy.

In the afternoon, the minister and party arrived at Nankathu Dam Project in Ingapu Township where Director U Tin Maung Ohn of Irrigation Department Construction-2 reported on progress of work.

Then, the minister, together with Chairman of Hinthada District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Win Htein, inspected main earth embankment, flow of water, the sluice gate, the conduit and the spillway of the 13am. Officials conducted them round the dam.

Nankathu Dam, 1,600 foot long and 160 foot high, can store 40,000 acre feet of water and irrigate 14,000 acres of land. There are 37,250 acres of various crops in the region.

In the evening, the minister and party inspected the site chosen for construction of Alonmyauk Dam Project near Okshitkon Village in Kyangin Township included, in Kunchaung Dam Construction Project. Officials reported matters related to the construction.

The minister laid down plans for construction of Alonmyauk Dam.


(8) Minister for Health tours Sagaing Division

YANGON, 11 Sept-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Director-General Dr Wan Maung of Heath Department inspected People' s Hospital (200-bed) in Kalay Township, Sagaing Division on 9 September. The minister met Station Commander Col Khin Maung Aye of Kalay Station, Division Health Officer Dr Kyaw Shein and officials at the hall of extension building of the hospital which is under construction. Officials reported the minister on construction work of two-storey building and construction plans. The minister gave instructions on finishing the building ahead of schedule, minimizing wastage and systematic construction of the building to meet standards of: a hospital and inspected construction site and wards. Then, the minister and party inspected People’s Hospital in Kalaywa Township and attended to the needs.

The minister and party inspected wards, X-ray room, operation theatre, laboratory, store rooms and delivery room at the Tamu District People's Hospital yesterday morning. Then, he inspected Khampet Hospital in Tamu Township and fulfiled the needs.

Meeting with departmental officials and employees, the minister said the government is striving for the development of health, education and social sectors hospitals, he said. The Ministry of Health is striving for Myanmar to be at the top level in health sector in South East Asia laying down special four-year plan. In doing so, all people should take part in these efforts with political outlook and national spirit.


(9)  Three men get imprisonment

YANGON, 11 Sept-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Tachilek Township Police Force, acting on a tip-off, raided and searched Room- No 206, Hninzi Guest House, Makaokhan Ward, Tachilek Township, at 6.00 pm on 7 March 2000. The team seized 30,600 stimulant tablets from Aik Lon, Sam Net and Aik Sam who were staying at the guest house.

Tachilek Police Station opened a case according to Sections 15/19 (A)121 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law against Aik Lon, 22, son of U Arnam, of Wabawnet Village, Mongyun, Sam Net, 19, son of U Aikpe Lu, of WanU Village, Panhsan Township, and Aik Sam, 20, son of U Aik Kat.

The case was sent to Tachilek Township Court. On 31 July, the court sentenced Aik Lon to three years' imprisonment according to Section 15 and 16 years' imprisonment according to 19 (A) to run separately, and Aik Sam and San Net to 16 years' imprisonment.


(10)  35 Minbu (Saku) Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 11 Sept-Thirty five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Minbu (Saku) Township, Magway Division. Thirty five members of Minbu (Saku) Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Minbu (Saku) Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 11 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.


(11) Voters of Mindon and Kamma townships of Thayet District unanimously petition for dissolution of pessimist NLD

YANGON, 11 Sept-People from Mindon and Kamma Townships, Thayet District, expressed no support for the pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of NLD at Kamma Township on 7 August morning and Thayet on 9 August morning.

A total of 23,765 people attended the ceremony held at Kamma Township Sports Ground. On behalf of local people, U Aye Kyaing of Ward 3 expressed no support for the pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Win Bo, on behalf of local people from Kamma Township presented petitions signed by the people to member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Judge Daw Wai Wai Zin. There are 45,683 eligible voters in Kamma Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, was 42,927 people or 93.96 per cent.

A similar ceremony was held, at Mindon Township Sports Ground, attended by a total of 24,815 people. On behalf of local people, Peasant U Phone Myint of Htanbingon Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. Merchant U Hla Swe, on behalf of local people from Mindon Township presented petitions signed by the people to member of township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Judge U Khin Win.

There are 40,398 eligible voters in Mindon Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, was 40,390 people or 99.98 per cent.
