(1) Leading Committee for Organizing Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition meets 

YANGON, 10 Sept-The second coordination meeting of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition ,took place at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street this afternoon, addressed by Patron of the Leading Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l said that Myanma traditional cultural performing arts competitions are held every year, and the competition of this year will be the eighth of its kind. Myanma traditional cultural performing arts competition is the highest national level one in. view of uplifting and preservation of culture among national movements in Myanmar. In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged all to make concerted efforts to sustain the success already achieved in uplifting and preserving traditional culture.

Then, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on measures being taken for organizing the Eighth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition. Next, a general round of discussions followed.

After that, the Secretary-1 and party selected and approved ceremonial background setting and designs, posters, postcards, pamphlets, brooches, medals and certificates of honour.

Later, the Secretary-1 said that it is encouraging to see doyen artistes and members of the panels of judges contributing towards the meeting. In conclusion, the Secretary-l called for presenting of handsome awards to outstanding artistes.


(2) Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt receives Pa-O national race leader and party

YANGON, 10 Sept-Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Pa-O national race leader from Southern Shan State U Tarkale and party at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road this evening.

The Pa-O national race leaders reported on matters related to agriculture, livestock breeding, road and bridge, transportation, economy, education, health, regional development and eradication of narcotic drugs.


(3) Multimedia teaching centre opens at BEHS No 1 in Thingangyun

YANGON, 10 Sept-A multimedia teaching centre was opened at No I Basic Education High School in Thingangyun Township this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Headmaster U Thein and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Nyunt Soe formally opened the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary-l formally unveiled the signboard of the centre. The Secretary-l and party inspected the study room, the audio visual teaching centre, the computer application room, the computer aided instruction room, the domestic science room, the art studio and music room and observed the skill demonstration of the students. The Secretary-l presented video and cassette tapes for the school to Headmaster U Thein.

The Secretary- 1 and Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted K 2.1 million donated by parents, K 150,000 by the headmaster and teachers, K 100,000 each by U Than Swe and U Yan Naing.

The Secretary-l said multimedia teaching centres are being opened nationwide in a short time with momentum in cooperation with parents and teachers, well-wishers and members of the School Board of Trustees under the leadership of the government. Basic education schools are making arrangements for development of human resources needed for. emergence of a peaceful modem developed nation, he said. The Secretary-l added that practical achievements in education have been made in a short time due to the implementation of education promotion programmes, harmonious efforts with the participation of the people, well-wishers, members of Board of Trustees and students under the leadership of the government. However, destructive elements who begrudged the achievements are destroying them in various means spreading rumours, he said.

The Secretary-l and party had souvenir photo taken with members of the School Board of Trustees, members-of PTA, the headmaster, teachers and students.


(4) Secretary-l accepts donations for Mahasantisukha Buddhist Missionary Centre

YANGON, 10 Sept-The 11th ceremony to make donations to Mahasantisukha Buddhist Missionary Centre was held at the centre in Tamway Township this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented K I million donated by MEC to Mahasantisukha Buddhist Missionary Centre.

Next, the Secretary-l, the commander and Ministers U Aung Khin and Maj-Gen Sein Htwa accepted K 25,550,399 and US$ 1,000 including K S million by Yangon City Development Committee and other well-wishers and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers.

The Secretary-l spoke on maintenance of the centre, the opening of regular courses, tasks to be carried out and lectures on foreign languages and customs for members of the Sangha and nuns who will go abroad for missionary work.  He called for cooperation with various committees in realizing the objectives of the centre.


(5) Provisions donated to nunneries, Muslim Home for the Aged in Thingangyun Township

YANGON, 10 Sept.  Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air)-and well-wishers donated rice to nunneries in Thingangyun Township Sunlungu Vipassana Kyaungtaik, Maha Thilawun Kyaungtaik, Bogale Kyaungtaik, Maha Saddhamma Theikpan Kyaungtaik and Withakha Kyaungtaik at the Dhammayon of Sunlungu Kyaungtaik in Ward 16/2 of the township this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Agga Maha Kammathanacariya Mandalay Sayadaw Bhaddanta Nandiya administered the Nine Precepts. Then, the Secretary-2 and party donated provisions to Sayadaws. Next, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, General Staff Officer (Grade 1) (Navy) Cmdr Cho Than Maung and Officiating Colonel General Staff ((Mechanical/Air) Lt-Col Ye Chit Pe presented rice donated by Tatmadaw families and well-wishers to Presiding Nuns. Director of People's Militia and Frontier Forces Brig-Gen Than Maung supplicated on the purpose of the donations. Presiding Nayaka of Sunlungu Vipassana Kyaungtaik Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sundara delivered a sermon. Then, the Secretary-2 and party shared merits gained.

Similarly, Tatmadaw families and well-wishers donated rice to Muslim Home for the Aged on Pyithaya Road in Baukhtaw of Thingangyun Township this morning.  Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party accepted donations for the Home for the Aged. Next, the Secretary-2 attended to the needs of the Home for the Aged. Ministries and well-wishers donated K 1,040,000 to purchase a car for the Home. Then, the Secretary-2 and party met elder persons of the Home for the Aged.

After that, the Secretary-2 inspected the plantation of Defence Services Records Office beside Waizayanda Road in Thingangyun Township. DSRC sells vegetables from the plantation not only to families of the DSRC but also to the tax-free markets.


(6) Chairman Sayadaw donates a footprint of Buddha to Monastery of Sweden

YANGON, 10 Sept-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita donated relics and a footprint of the Lord Buddha to the Buddhist Monastery of Sweden at Nikaya Sarthintaik in Dagon Myothit (South) Township this morning.

Present were the Chairman Sayadaw and members of the Sangha, representative monks of the monastery of Sweden, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Director-General Dr Myo Myint of Religious Affairs Department, Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Adviser to- the State Peace- and Development Council Office U Arnt Maung and officials of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Before the ceremony, the Chairman Sayadaw and members of the Sangha consecrated the footprint of the Buddha. Secretary Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara administered the Five Precepts. The Chairman Sayadaw gave an Ovadakatha to the congregation. Then, the Chairman Sayadaw presented the footprint of the Buddha to a member of the Sangha of the monastery of Sweden who spoke words of thanks.

Afterwards, representative monks of the monastery of Sweden offered robes and provisions to the Chairman Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. Later, the Secretary Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.


(7) Appointment of Ambassador of Nigeria agreed on

YANGON, 11 Sept-The Government of the Union of Myanmar has agreed to the appointment of His Highness Prince Ademola Olugbade Aderele as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Union of Myanmar.

His Highness Prince Ademola Olugbade Aderele was born in 1946 and received a Bachelor of Science (Political Science) degree from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1971 and a Post-Graduate diploma (International Affairs) form the Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, in 1972. He joined the diplomatic service in 1972 and has served in various capacities at the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Missions in Brazaville, The Hague, Conakry, Baghdad, Stockholm and Manila.

His Highness Prince Ademola Olugbade Aderele will be concurrently accredited as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Union of Myanmar with residence in Bangkok. His Highness Prince Ademola Olugbade Aderele is married.


(8) Myanmar delegation leaves for Singapore

YANGON, 10 Sept-A Myanmar delegation led by Chief Justice U Aung Toe left here for Singapore by air this morning to attend the 21st General Assembly of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization to be held from 10 to 15 September.

The Myanmar delegation was seen off at the airport by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Vice-Chief Justice U Than Oo, Vice-Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye, Supreme Court Justice Dr Tin Aung Aye, officials of the Supreme Court and First Secretary of the Embassy of Singapore Mr William Chik.

The delegation comprises member of Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission U Aye Maung and Joint-Secretary of National Convention Convening Work Committee U Thaung Nyunt.


(9) Minister inspects vegetable plantations of ministry in Hmawby Township

YANGON, 10 Sept-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by directors-general and officials, inspected progress in cultivation of vegetable plantations being undertaken by the ministry and departments in vacant and virgin lands near Kyarkansu Village and Hsatthadaw-Kyarkansu-No 3 Highway in Hmawby Township this morning. First, the minister and party inspected Hsatthadaw-Kyarkansu road section.

Then, the minister and party inspected cultivation of plantations in the first-phase26 acres of the Head Office of the ministry and departments. The minister inspected cultivation of plantations in the second-phase-140 acres, land reclamation and Kyarkansu-No 3 Highway road section.

The ministry has put 26 acres in the first phase and 140 in the second phase under vegetables, pea and potato, and 125 acres of land have been reclaimed. Land preparations are being made in the remaining areas. The ministry plans to sell vegetables from the plantations to tax-free markets.


(10) Minister inspects Laydauntkan Fish Breeding Camp

YANGON, 10 Sept-Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Aung Thein and officials, arrived at Laydauntkan Fish Breeding Camp in Dagon Myothit (East), Yangon Division yesterday afternoon. In the briefing hall, the Minister and party were reported on work done and preparations for fish breeding by Director-General of Fisheries Department U Than Tun and Head of Yangon Division Fisheries Department U Khin Maung Win. The Minister gave instructions and inspected the camp and seasonal crops plantation.

Myanmar team leaves for Olympics 

YANGON, 1 0 Sept-Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, General Secretary U Thaung Htaik and Myanmar team left for Sydney, Australia by air this evening to take part in 27th World Olympic Games to be held from 15 September to I October.

The minister and the team were seen off at the Yangon International Airport by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, chairperson, executive committee members, members of Leading Patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, Presidents of sports federations, Acting Director General Lt-Col Thein Aung and officials of Sports and Physical Education Department, relatives of sports men- and Australian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Trevor David Wilson and officials.

Myanmar team comprises leader U Zaw Lin, Manager Daw Nyo, the two instructors Lt San Myint and Dr Mya Thura Soe, Kaythi Win, Swe Swe Win and Khin Moe Nwe for weight lifting, Thi Thi Win for archery, Moe Thu Aung for swimming and Maung Maung Nge and Cherry for track and field.

Aung Win emerges champion in 2nd Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001

YANGON, 10 Sept  Profession al golfer Aung Win clinched the champion of the Second I Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001, co-organized by Myanmar Professional Golfers' Association and Myanmar Golf Federation and mainly sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd at Yedagun Toung Golf Club in Mandalay today. After the fourth round, President of MGF and Chairman of MPGA Brig-Gen Win Hlaing gave a speech. Then,' General Manager Mr Koh Tai Hong of Myanmar Brewery Ltd presented the prize to Maung Pauk Si who won the first in the Tiger Putting Challenge competition.

Corporate Affairs Manager Maj Myint Thein (Retd) of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Ltd presented special prize to professional golfer U Chan Han, Secretary of MPGA and Managing Director of Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd, in the Stairway to London (Chipping) tournament. General Secretary of MGF U Aung Kyi gave away Nearest to the Pin award presented by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, Tiger Beer and Wilson to amateur golfer Soe Paing Win.

Director U Khin Maung Myint of Yangon Airways and General Secretary of MGF U Aung Kyi presented prizes to daily best scorers Min Naing, Aung Win, Myat Moe, Myint Thaung and Win Naing Tun.

Secretary of Mandalay City Development Committee Lt-Col Maung Pu presented first, second and third prizes to Min Naing (285) strokes, Yin Htwe (248) and Kyaw Moe (303) in the Amateur Division respectively and the course record award to professional golfer Myint Thaung (66).

President of MGF and Chairman of MPGA Brig-Gen Win Hlaing presented first, second and third prizes to Champion Aung Win (291) strokes, Myint Thaung (291) and former champion Win Naing Tun (292) in the Professional Division respectively.

Managing Director Mr Arend Ng of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd presented the prize of cheque to Champion Aung Win and gifts for Yedagun Toung Golf Club to member of MCDC U Tin Oo. (12) 38 Pale Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 10 Sept-Thirty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing Division.

Thirty-eight members of Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 30 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
