(1) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image crowded  with pilgrims 

YANGON, 9 Sept-Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni  Image on Mindhamma Hill on 5 Mindhamma  Road in Insein Township was crowded with members of the Sangha and q people from morning to evening  today. The retaining wall at the hill was building and Cammakham of the Image was built with reinforced  concrete. "Wut" associations recited religious verses from the morning to 10 PM. Well-wishers served  pilgrims and monks with drinking water, vegetarian pilaf and fried noodle at the hill. Donations by the public  have amounted to K 41,805,800 since 5 August to date.


(2) Ceremony to mark success in putting Image onto throne to be held on 12 Sept

YANGON, 9 Sept-The 4 corner-stone laying of  "Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi " will be held in conjunction with  ceremony to mark the t completion of putting Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne  at Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, Yangon and ceremony to carve the Image at 7.30 am on 12  September 2000 (Fullmoon Day of Tawthalin 1362 ME).


(3)  Secretary-1 lays cornerstone for construction of five-storey Maha Wizayakayi building

YANGON, 9 Sept- Ceremonies to open archway of Maha Dhammikayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik (Kyaikpi  Kyaung), to lay cornerstone for construction of five-storey Maha Wizayakayi building and to present  donations were held at the Kyaungtaik on Maha Bawdi Street in Yankin Township, Yangon Division, this  morning, attended by Secretary- 1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin t Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the archway  of Maha Dharnmikayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik (Kyaikpi Kyaung). Then, a  ceremony to lay cornerstone for construction of Maha Wizayakayi five-storey building was held in the compound of the Kyaungtaik. Member of  State Calendar Advisory Board U Kyaw read the stone inscription.

Then, Secretary -1 Lt- Gen Khin Nyunt presented a casket to  Siribhaddanta Gunesana and placed it at the centre of the foundation. At  the auspicious time, Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister Lt-Gen Min  Thein, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister U Aung Khin, Deputy Minister  U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and Joint-Secretary of Yangon City Development  Committee U Kyi Win laid the cornerstones

(4)  Secretary-1 receives Pa-O national race leader of Shan State Special Region-6

YANGON, 9 Sept-Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National aces  Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Pa-O national race  leader U Aung Hkam Hti and party of Special Region-6 of Shan State (South) at Tatmadaw Guest House  on Inya Road at 5 pm today. Also present on the occasion were Minister for Progress of Border Areas  and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic  Studies Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Maj-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Minister for  Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office,  departmental heads and officials. They discussed matters related to agriculture, regional development,  narcotic drug eradication, education, health, sports and transport sectors.


(5) Bahan Township BEHS No 2 gets multimedia teaching centre

YANGON, 9 Sept - A ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of Basic Education High School  No 2, Bahan Township, was held at the school this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education  Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Headmaster U  Mtay Aung and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Kyaing Maung formally opened the  multimedia teaching centre of No 2 BEHS, Bahan Township.

The Secretary-l formally unveiled the signboard of the centre. Then, the Secretary- 1 and party inspected  the computerized media section, the study room, the audio-visual teaching room, the demonstrative media  section, the altar room, the painting and sculpture room, the domes tic science room and the music room,  and viewed the skill demonstration of students.

Next, a ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia teaching centre was held in the hall of the school.  The Secretary-l presented cassette and video tapes for the school to Headmaster U Htay Aung. The  Secretary-l accepted donations including K 900,000 for the school by parents. Deputy Minister for  Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung accepted donations for the school including K 300,000 by old students,  a computer and a printer worth

Afterwards, the Secretary-l said that the government is implementing education promotion programmes,  and success has been achieved. It is due to the cooperation and participation of the People. In three years'  time, due to active participation of parents, systematic teaching and diligent studies of students, the  intellectual level of the students has become higher.

In conclusion, the Secretary-l thanked parents, teachers and well wishers and urged them to actively  cooperate with the government in turning out intellectuals and intelligentsia.

Then, the Secretary-1and party, together with members of the SBT and the PTA, the headmaster, the  teachers and the students, posed for photos.


(6)  Secretary--2 inspects Integrated Livestock Breeding Farm (Ywathagyi)

YANGON, 9 Sept - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, together with Chairman of Poultry Breeding and Production Committee Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and senior military officers, the officer on special duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office and officials, went to Integrated Livestock Breeding Farm (Ywathagyi) of Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise under the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries at Ywathagyi, Dagon Myothit East), this afternoon.

The Secretary-2 and party were welcomed there by Vice-Chairman of Poultry Breeding and Production  Committee Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister U Aung  Thein, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan and, officials.

The Secretary-2 said that farmers constitute the majority of the population of the State. The government is  taking all-round measures to provide assistance for farmers and to improve their living standard. Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party went to the feedstuff factory of Maykha Industries Ltd and  inspected production of feedstuff for poultry, the work being done with the computerized system, the  quality control room and the laboratory. The feedstuff factory is producing various kinds of feedstuff for  poultry with modern methods.


(7) Provisions donated to 66 monasteries in Thayettaw Kyaungtaik in Lanmadaw Township

YANGON, 9 Sept-Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well wishers donated provisions to 66  monasteries in Thayettaw Kyaungtaik in Lanmadaw Township at 9.15 AM today. The ceremony held at  Pariyatti Aletaik in the com pound of Thayettaw Kyaungtaik, was attended by Secretary-2 of the State  Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen  Tin Oo.

Chairman of Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Hmankyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Saddhamma  Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Pinnajota administered the Five Precepts. Then, members of the Sangha recited  parittas.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party presented offertories to the Presiding Sayadaws. Chief of Staff  (Navy) Captain Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe and Vice Adjutant General Brig-Gen  Maung Nyo presented provisions donated by Tatmadaw (Army, Navy & Air) families to 66 monasteries  through the Hmankyaung Sayadaw.

Provisions-254 bags of rice, 146 viss of edible oil, 783 viss . of iodized salt, 75 packets of soft salt for tooth  brushing, 2,166 bottles of ;assorted traditional medicines, 33 bags of gram and 67 sets of robes were  donated by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council. Then, various departments and well-wishers  presented K 772,470 to the Commander and Ministers for"soon" Padaythabin of 66 monasteries.  Well-wishers presented K 1,486,351 for renovation of Pariyatti Aletaik Kyaung to senior Tatmadaw  officers.

Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint and Director of Resettlements Brig-Gen  Aung Thein supplicated on religious affairs and donations. Afterwards, the Hmankyaung Sayadaw  delivered a sermon. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party shared the merits.


(8)  State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayadaws attended Millennium World Peace Summit

YANGON, 9 Sept-The Millennium World Peace Summit was held in New York from 28 to 31 August in  order to enable the UN to effectively settle world peace issues with the help of the world's religious and  spiritual leaders. It was the first ever summit after the Second World War and was attended by some 2,000  religious leaders from the nations.

A Myanmar delegation comprising Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee  Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Sunyabhivamsa, Secretary Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha  Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara, Joint Secretary Sayadaws Agga Maha  Pandita Bhaddanta Candima and Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Othadabhivamsa, Joint Shwekyin  Sasanabaing Sayadaw Abhidhaia Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Aggiya and Tipitakadhara Tipitaka Kovida  Dhamma Bandagarika Dr Bhaddanta Sumangala Lankara and laypersons Director-General of Religious  Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, Protector of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary  University Dr Hla Pe and Director-General of the Consular International Law and Treaties and Research  Department U Thein Myint.

The opening ceremony of the summit took place at the UN General Assembly Hall and group-wise  discussions were held at the Wadolf Orstoria Hotel. The Myanmar delegation attended the summit on 28  August. Secretary-General of the Summit Mr Bawar James addressed the summit. Religious leaders of  Hindu. Buddhism, Islam, Christian, James, Taoism and Sikh wished for world peace.


(9) Minister inspects production work, construction of factories

YANGON, 9 Sept-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, accompanied by Deputy Minister Lt-Col  Khin Maung Kyaw, arrived at the Indagaw industrial region of the Ministry of Industry-2, Bago Division,  this morning.  In the briefing hall, the minister inspected vehicle parts and agricultural equipment to be  manufactured in the region. Managing directors reported on construction of automobile assembling  factories and a power-tiller factory, arrangements for greening tasks in the region and water and power  supply. Then, the minister inspected Radiator Workshop, Metal Bearing Workshop, Disc Wheel Workshop  and construction of assembling workshops being built by Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries  and arrangements for supply of water from Shwepyi -3 Dam to the region, and he gave instructions on  preparations for installation of machines at completed buildings and water and power supply.


(10) International literary award winners honoured

YANGON, 9 Sept-Central Executive Committee of Myanmar Writers  and Journalists Association honoured literati who won international  literary awards at the Karaweik Palace this afternoon, with an address  by Minister for Information Mai-Gen Kyi Aung. Secretary of MWJA  Director (News) of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun (Hla  Tun-Twantay) acted as master of ceremonies.

Minister Mai-Gen Kyi Aung said it was the ceremony to revive the  good tradition of honouring literati, and the preservation of a good  tradition was an auspicious deed, U Kyi Aye (Hsinphyugyun Aung Thein) and U Kyaw Aung (Kyaw  Aung), South East Asia Write Award winners, have been honoured It is very auspicious to honour another  SEA Write Award winner Daw Yin Yin (Saw Mon Nyin) and international literary award winners Dr  Than Tun and U Thaw Kaung (Thaw Kaung).

Next, Chairman of MWJA U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) extended greetings. CEC member of MWJA U  Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) eulogized the three international literary award winners. Minister Maj-Gen  Kyi Aung presented gifts to Dr Than Tun, U Thaw Kaung and Daw Yin Yin.

Historian Dr Than Tun won the award of the education sector presented by Fukuoka Foundation of Japan,  member of Myanmar Historical Commission U Thaw Kaung was awarded the honorary doctorate by the  University of Sydney of Australia and CEC member of MW1A and member of the Department of  Myanmar Language Commission writer Daw Yin Yin (Saw Mon Nyin) won SEA Write Award. Next,  Daw Yin Yin (Saw Mon Nyin) spoke words of thanks.


(11) Minister inspects fan-belt factory

YANGON, 9 Sept- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin accompanied by  departmental officials arrived at fan-belt factory of Myanma Perennial Crops Enterprise in Pyinmabin  Industrial Complex, Mingaladon Township this morning. The minister was conducted round the factory by  managing director of MACE and the factory manager. The minister inspected installation of machines,  moulds, machines for mixing chemicals machines for steaming, machines for belt finishing and quality  control work. The minister gave instructions on manufacturing durable and good quality belts, maintenance  of machines and safety measures. The factory will open soon and produce 6,000 belts of various sizes of  200 kinds for engines, motor vehicles and heavy machinery daily in two shifts.


(12)  Heroin seized in Lashio

YANGON, 9 Sept-A combined team comprising local intelligence and Myanmar Police Force, acting on  information, at the Mandalay fork of Lashio Tantyan Road, stopped and searched a van with number plate  Bha/9636 leading from Lashio to Kyaukme, and arrested passenger Ma Aye Aye (a) Ma Swe Yi, daughter  of U Lawru, of Ward 4, Laukkai, together with 22 boxes of heroin weighing 0.352 kg on 12 August 2000.  Action was taken against her under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(13)  24 Hlegu Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 9 Sept-Twenty-four members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Hlegu  Township, Yangon Division. Twenty-four members of Hlegu Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their  own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Hlegu Township Multi-party Democracy General  Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 7 July 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in  party politics of NLD.
