(1) Stake-driving ceremony held to build Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi on Mindhamma Hill

YANGON, 7 Sept-A stake-Driving ceremony to construct Gandakuti Kyaungdawgyi where Lawka Chantha  Abhaya Labha Muni Image will be kept, was held on Mindhamrna Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein  Township, Yangon North District, this morning.

The ceremony was graced by the presence of Maha Ganthavacaka Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja  Alodawpyi Sayadaw Bhaddanta Ariyavamsa.

Also present were Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin and  deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, heads of department, artisans, guests and pilgrims. Minister U Aung Khin  and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko took position at Sunday Corner, Minister U Pan Aung and  Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin at Tuesday Comer, the Alodawpyi Sayadaw and Deputy Minister for  Health Professor Dr Mya Oo at Rahu Corner and Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint  Maung and Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa at Saturday Corner.

When the auspicious time came, they drove stakes at the respective places. Minister U Aung Khin performed  the ritual of golden and silver showers.

Similarly, an initiation ceremony to build Hsutaungpyi Pagoda was held on Aungchantha Hill near  Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township, Yangon North District, this morning.

Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen  Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa,  heads of department and artisans took designated places.

When the auspicious time came, the dignitaries drove stakes. Then, the ritual of golden and silver showers  was performed to mark the successful completion of the ceremony. Mindhamma Hill was thronged with  members of the Sangha and Buddhist devotees who came to pay homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha  Muni Image.  Members of the Sangha and Buddhist devotees made donations to the funds of the Image. Donations  received for the funds of the Image from 5 August to date totalled (K 39,819,600).



(2) Secretary-3 receives leader of Indian goodwill military soccer team

YANGON, 7 Sept-Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant General Lt-Gen Win Myint  received leader of Indian goodwill military soccer team Brigadier Gopala Pillai Kamachandran Nair and party  at the guest house of Ministry of Defence this evening. Also present at the call were Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt  Soe Thein, Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Vice-Adjutant General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, senior military  officers, Indian Ambassador Mr Shyam Saran and Military Attaché Col Shakti Gurung.


(3)  UMFCCI President meets Japanese guests

YANGON, 7 Sept-President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win  Myint met Professor of Japan-Myanmar CCI-Business Co-operation Committee (JMBCC) Mr Minoura Kiryu at  the building of UMFCCI this morning. They discussed holding third joint-meeting of JMBCC in November  2000, and meeting Mandalay Chambers of Commerce and Industry. The UMFCCI president party and party  are invited to attend Global Business Opportunities Contention 2000 (GBOC 2000) to be held in Japan in  October 2000.


(4)  Minister for F&R meets ambassador

YANGON,7 Sept-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Ambassador of India to  Myanmar Mr Shyam Saran at his office at 3 PM today. Also present; at the call was Governor of the Central  Kyaw Maung.

Minister meets Ambassador of Indonesia

YANGON, 7 Sept-Minister for Culture U Win Sein met Ambassador of Indonesia Mr Nasaruddin Mochtar Koro  at his office at 3 PM today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt,  Director-General of Department of Cultural Institute U Myint Thein Swe, Director-General of Archaeology  Department U Nyunt Han, Deputy Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Ba Hsan, Rector of University  of Culture U Tin Soe and officials.


(5)  31st Meeting of SEAMEO RECSAM Governing Board held

YANGON, 7 Sept-An opening ceremony of the 31st Meeting of the South East Asian Ministers of Education  Organization Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (SEAMEO RECSAM) Governing  Board was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, attended by Minister for  Education U Than Aung.

 Also present were Deputy Minister Brig- Gen Soe win Maung and boards under the ministry, rectors, pro  rectors and principals of colleges and universities in Yangon under the ministry, the director of the SEAMEO  Secretariat, representatives from ten countries of SEAMEO and officials of SEAMEO RECSAM.

Chairman Dato Dr Arshad RECSAM Governing. Board extended greetings and Minister U Than Aung  delivered an opening speech. Then Director Dr Suparak Racha-Intra of SEAMEO Secretariat gave a speech  and the opening ceremony came to an end. Afterwards, the meeting of Governing Board was held and ended  in the evening. The meeting will be held up to 9 September.


(6) MAPT organizes training courses

YANGON, 7 Sept-The concluding ceremony of Basic Accountancy Rules and Regulations Course No 1/2000  and the  opening of Budget and Statistics Supervision Course No 2000 were held in the assembly hall of  Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading on Pansodan Street this afternoon.

Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone made a speech on the occasion. The minister said that Myanma  Agricultural Produce Trading is working to achieve the target of US$ 250 million for 2000-2001 financial year,  and the courses are designed to enable employees to draw, handle and issue money in accord with rules  and regulations. The minister said that those who keep financial accounts, are responsible for giving advice  on financial matters and checking financial accounts in advance, and they need to cooperate with township  managers, assistant managers of state and division and division managers.


(7)  Minister inspects work to turn match factory into bicycle factory

YANGON, 7 Sept-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, together with Deputy Ministers Brig Gen Thein Tun  and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and heads of department, inspected the work of turning No 2 Match Factory into a  bicycle factory at Setsan Ward, Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning.

The minister gave instructions on major renovation work. In the briefing hall of the factory, Managing Director  of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries U Nyunt Aung reported on process of major renovation and  Managing Director of Myanma Paper and Chemical Industries U Ngwe Thaw on the condition of the match  factory. The minister gave instructions. The minister and party inspected the site for construction of the  annexes of the match factory, logs dipped in water to be used for production of match sticks, warehouses  and production process of matches.

The minister proceeded to Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Appliances Industries and inspected  production process. The Ministry of Industry-l is taking measures to produce bicycles as an import-substitute  item. Major renovation is being carried out to turn the match factory into a bicycle factory, and machinery is  being installed at the factory. Arrangements are being made to send employees of the ministry to the  People's Republic of China to learn technology.



(8) Minister inspects machinery in Dagon Myothit (North)

YANGON, 7 Sept-Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col  Thein Nyunt, accompanied by Director-General of Development Affairs Department Col Myo Myint and  officials, inspected machinery in the compound of the warehouse of Development Affairs Department in  Dagon Myothit (North) this morning. After inspecting the machinery which will be distributed to Township  Development Affairs Departments, the Minister gave necessary instructions.

Then, the Minister and party inspected water pipes and manual water pumps in the warehouse and left  instructions there. The machinery to be used at road works and equipment for water supply will be  distributed to townships in Sagaing, Mandalay and Magway Divisions.


(9)  Successful implementation of CCDAC's tasks national requirement

YANGON, 7 Sept - Chairman of the Central Working Bodies Supervisory Committee of Central Committee for  Drug Abuse Control and Central Working Bodies held a meeting at Myanmar Police Force Head Office this  morning.

Present at the meeting were Chairman of the Supervisory Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs  Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy  Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Secretary of  CCDAC Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win and members, chairmen of  Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association and Border Areas Development Association and officials of CCDAC.  Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung said Myanmar is striving to root out  the problem of narcotic drugs, which is the evil legacy of colonialists, as a national task. Head of State Senior  General Than Shwe has given guidance to give more priority to eradicating the trafficking of illicit drugs as  there exist baseless accusations against Myanmar concerning the problem despite her efforts to root it out.

At the CCDAC meeting which was held on 4 May this year, the Secretary-1 of the State Peace and  Development Council pointed out that successful implementation of CCDAC's tasks is a national  requirement. Special attention is being paid to preventing the use of stimulant pills among students.  Anti-drug courses are being conducted in lower and upper Myanmar and 226 teachers are attending them.  MANA and other related organizations are educating the students to know the ill effects of the narcotics.  Cure and rehabilitation centres for drug addicts in Shwepyitha and Shwepyiaye are gaining success. Efforts  are needed to ensure success in other centres. The Secretary-l is giving close supervision to the Shwepyitha  and Shwepyiaye centres, giving counsel to totally root out the danger of drugs. CCDAC and the central  working bodies should strive to realize the counsel.

Extra success is needed to growing opium substitute crops at border areas. Perennial and seasonal crops  seeds should be distributed to the areas in time. Farming enterprises of national race leaders are gaining  development. MANA' s anti-drug activities are gaining more and more success among the public and  students. It should extend its projects to cover the whole nation; CCDAC will render necessary assistance.  BADA; which is a non governmental organization, was reformed. The requirements of the association will be  fulfilled. Police Maj-Gen Soe Win explained progress in realizing the decisions of the previous meeting.  Officials then presented accomplishments sector wise. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by  Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung.


(10) 20 Myinmu Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 7 Sept-Twenty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myinmu Township,  Sagaing Division. Twenty members of Myinmu Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord,  resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myinmu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 9 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in  party politics of NLD.


(11) Second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000 2001 opens at Mandalay Yedagon Toung Golf Club

YANGON, 7 Sept-The second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001 opened at Mandalay Yedagon  Toung Golf Club in Mandalay this morning. The tourney was co-sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation,  Myanmar Professional -Golfer's Association and Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd

Present at the opening ceremony were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of  Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint,  Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, President of MGF  and MPGA Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and executives, senior military officers, guests and local golf enthusiasts.

First the golfers took their respective places at the 10th Tee. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Mayor Brig-Gen  Yan Thein, Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and Corporate Affairs Manager of the company U Myint Thein teed off to mark  the opening of the 18-hole tourney. On the first day, Win Naing Tun who had won championship prize in  Professional Golfers tourney for three consecutive years from 1997 to 1999 led the tourney with 73 strokes,  followed by Aung Zaw Moe, Than Aung, Myint Shwe, Zaw Oo and Tun Hlaing each with 75.

In men's amateur golf tourney, Min Naing, the champion of Bagan first leg, was leading the first day with 71  stroke, followed by Aye Min 74 and Nyunt Naing 75. The tourney was held with the aim of developing golf in  Myanmar, bringing out talented golfers from the entire nation, enhancing friendship among the golfers and  promoting the level of Myanmar golf to catch up with the international level.

The second day of the tourney continued at the same venue. Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd supported the Second  Leg of the tour in Mandalay. Other official sponsors of the tourney were Tiger Beer, Yangon Airways, Star Cola,  VeVe, Canon, Wilson, The Prince Hotel, Asia Wealth Bank (Mandalay), Hong Pang Group of Companies and  Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd.
