(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Malaysia

 YANGON, 31 Aug-On the occasion of the anniversary of the National Day of Malaysia which falls on 31 August 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar has sent messages of felicitations to His Majesty Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, Yang Di-Pertuan-Agong.XI of Malaysia and His Excellency Dato Seri Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia.


(2)General Maung Aye tours Bago Division

YANGON, 30 Aug-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, the ministers, the commander of No 88 LID, the chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council and officials, yesterday left Magway for Thayet by helicopter.

The General and party went to Thayet Cement Plant where Minister U Aung Thaung reported on brief history of the plant, repair of kiln No l and No 2, construction of kiln No 3 under the guidance of the Head of State and production of cement. General Maung Aye gave instructions on production of cement in full capacity. The General and party inspected production process, control room, machines and spare parts. The General inspected kiln No 3 and gave instructions.

The General and party went to Pyay by helicopter in the afternoon. The General and party visited Shwehsandaw Pagoda in the Pyay this morning. The General and party paid obeisance to Buddha's Tooth Relic in Swedawtaik. The General made donation for the pagoda and signed in the visitors' book. General Maung Aye met members of Bago Division (Western branch) Peace and Development Council, local authorities, and departmental personnel. The General then cordially greeted them. The General and party arrived back here in the evening.


(3) MEC Chairman attends ceremony to open Diploma Courses of Yangon Cooperative Degree College

YANGON, 30 Aug-A ceremony to open Diploma Courses of Yangon Cooperative Degree College of the Ministry of Cooperatives was held at the Cooperatives Trade Centre at the corner of Saya San Road and University Avenue in Bahan Township this morning.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended and pressed the button to unveil the signboard of the Diploma Course.

Then, Principal of Yangon Cooperative Degree College U Ko Ko Aung, Chairman of GEC (Education) Cooperative Syndicate Dr Tun Maung and Chairman of IAA Dr Joseph U Baek formally opened the diploma course.

MEC Chairman and Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the signboard. The Secretary- 1 and party then inspected the lecture hall.


(4) Uto-Kya-in region in Taikkyi emerging as large national-level model farm

YANGON, 30 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected agriculture work being carried out by Yangon City Development Committee in Uto-Kya-in agriculture region in Taikkyi Township this morning.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party inspected Cima, Marubini, Theehtatyin, Ayeyamin and Manawthukha rice and milling of paddy at a 25-ton Rice Mill.

The Secretary-2 and party also inspected construction of paddy dryer capacity of which is lS0 baskets of paddy per hour. The paddy dryer was constructed with baked brick of Brick and Tile Factory of the Ministry of Industry-l and the capacity of paddy dryer is 3,600 baskets of paddy per day.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected Briquette Factory and gave necessary instructions to officials. The Briquette Factory produces 1,000 viss of briquettes per day.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of a Rice Mill. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party went to Uto-Kya-in agriculture region and inspected paddy fields and a farmhouse. The Kyontamyin agriculture camp in the region will breed 20,000 ducks.

The Secretary-2 and party arrived at Kya-in agriculture camp where officials conducted him round the camp. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo looked into the requirements and proceeded to a workshop in the region. In-charge U Ba Hla and officials conducted the Secretary-2 and party around the workshop.  The Secretary-2 and party inspected breeding of fish and a fingerling station. The Secretary-2 and party arrived at construction site of Paddy, Vegetables and Fruit Research Centre.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended to their needs and inspected city golf resort and shop. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said harmonious progress of the nation' s agriculture and meat and fish sectors is needed. In addition to its normal functions, YCDC is taking part in implementing and running integrated agricultural and livestock farms with an aim of contributing to the progress of the nation's production sector. At present, efforts are being made in implementing Uto-Kya-in Station, Twenty Fish Farm, Kyauktan Fish and Prawn Farm, Htaukkyant Chicken Farm, and North Okkalapa Agricultural and, Livestock Farm in Yangon Division and Maubin Fish Farm in Ayeyawady Division.  The Secretary-2 and party arrived back here in the afternoon.


(5)  Ministers receive foreign guests

YANGON, 30 Aug-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Managing Director of Penas Corporation Berhand of Malaysia Mr Goh Choon Lye and party at his office at 11 am today.

 Also present at the call were Managing Director of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications U Maung Maung Tin and officials.

Minister for Industry-l meets foreign guests

YANGON, 30 Aug-Minister for Industry- 1 U Aung Thaung met Chairman Mr Li Hai Dong of APR-China Norinco International Pte Ltd of China and party at 9 am, Ambassador of Israel Mr Baruch Ram at 3 PM, Vice-President Mr Young Kil Kim of Baek Kwawg Mineral Products Co Ltd, Seoul and party at 3.30 PM and Chairman Mr Yang Chang Heng of China Metallurgical Construction (Group) Corporation of China and party at his office at 4 PM today separately. Also present were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, officials of departments and 'enterprises under the ministry.

Minister meets Indian visitors

YANGON, 30 Aug-Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun met Secretary of Ministry of Home Affairs of India Mr Kamal Pande and party, accompanied by the Indian Ambassador. at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister U Maung Aung, Director-General of Immigration and National Registration Department Col Maung Htay and officials.

Minister for Health meets guests from Malaysia and WHO

YANGON, 30 Aug-Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Dr Thomas L Hall of UCSF School of Medicine Department of Epidemiolog San Francisco at 2.30 PM and Director Mr Muhammad Azaham Wahab of Penas Corporation Berhad, Malaysia and party at 3.30 PM at his office on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road today separately. Also present at the calls were Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo and officials.

Deputy Minister meets President of Lako International Trading Inc

YANGON, 30 Aug- Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan met President of Lako International Trading Inc of the Republic of Korea Mr Lee Jae Hi at his office at 5.30 PM today. Also present at the call were Directors-General U Nyunt Aye and Col Nay Win,  Managing Director U Min Hla Aung and officials.


(6)  U Thein Aung appointed Ambassador to Egypt

YANGON, 31 Aug- The Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Thein Aung as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Arab Republic of Egypt.


(7) Sayadaw Bhaddanta Khanti passes away

 YANGON, 30 Aug-The Religious Affairs Department today announced- Presiding Sayadaw of Myoma Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Bauktheesu Ward, Sittway in Rakhine State and member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayadaw Baddantha Khanti (Agga Maha Pandita), age 77, vasa 57, passed away at 0.15 am on 30 August.


(8)  Signing ceremony for agreement on Seventh National Level Meeting between Myanmar and India held

YANGON, 30 Aug-A ceremony to sign an agreement on Seventh National Level Meeting between Myanmar and India was held at the meeting hall of Myanmar Police Force, Ministry of Home Affairs at 7 PM today.

Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Vice-Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Than Lwin, Director General of General Administration Department U Aung Thein, officials concerned, leader of the Indian delegation Secretary Mr Kamal Pande of Ministry of Home Affairs of India and delegates and Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran attended the ceremony.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and Mr Kamal Pande extended greetings and signed the agreement on Seventh National Level Meeting between Myanmar and India.


(9)  National Seminar on Sustainable Tourism Development in Myanmar held

YANGON, 30 Aug- The opening ceremony of the National Seminar on Sustainable Tourism Development in Myanmar co-sponsored by Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, ESCAP and WTO was held at Inya Lake Hotel this morning.

Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu made an opening speech. Then Regional Representative of Asia-Pacific Mr Norio Goto of WTO and Head Mr Ryuji Yamakawa of ESCAP also made speeches.

Experts of tourism services from ESCAP, WTO, Thai Tourism Authority, Asian Institute of Technology, International Tourism Development Institute, Japan and Ceylon Hotel School reported on basic principles and strategies on tourism development, coordination of the State and the private services on promoting tourism, human resource on tourism, smooth transportation and administration sectors.

Also present on the occasion were 30 officials from Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Rail Transportation, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Forestry, Ministry of Construction, Embassy of Japan and 59 representatives from private hotels and tourism services. The seminar will continue on 31 August.

Second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour to be held at Yedagun Toung Golf Club in Mandalay

YANGON, 30 Aug-The second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001 jointly sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar profession Golfers Association will be held on a grand scale at Yedagun Toung Golf  Club in Mandalay from 7 to 10 September 2000. Handsome prizes will be given to winners. Sunfar Travel and Tour Co Ltd, Rapier and Canon Co will present handsome prizes to golfers who will get hole-in-one. Only men amateur golfers with handicap 0-l2 strokes can participate in the tournament together with professional golfers.

Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd, Tiger Beer, Yangon Airways, Canon, Star Colar, the prizes Airport Hotel and AWB Bank (Mandalay branch) will also sponsor the second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour which was held with the aims to raise standard of Myanmar golf, to turn out golfers from various parts of the country and to promote friendship among the golfers and to enable them to catch up with those from other nations.

 Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd organized the tour.   Golfers are to enlist at Yedagun Toung Golf Club at 2 PM on 5 September at the latest.

 Myanmar youth soccer team leaves

YANGON, 30 Aug- Myanmar selected youth soccer team led by Principal of Defence Services Self-defence and Sports Institute Col Sein Tin Win left here by air this evening to take part in the Asian Under16 Youth Soccer Tournament to be held in Vietnam from 3 to 17 September. The team was seen off at Yangon International Airport by General Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department U Thaung Htaik and officials and their relatives. The team comprises one leader, one deputy leader, three managers and coaches, one medical officer and 19 footballers.


(11) Stimulant pills seized in Botahtaung

YANGON, 30 Aug-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting at the comer of Bogyoke Aung San Road and Theinbyu Road, arrested Tun Lwin of Monyo Township and Soe Lwin of Kawa Township, who arrived there to peddle  drugs, together with 1,800 stimulant tablets bearing letters "WY" on 5 August. Action has been taken against them in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.


(12) 30 Ngazun Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 30 Aug-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Mandalay Division. Thirty members of Ngazun Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 15 March 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
