(1) Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe accepts credentials of Ambassador of Islamic Republic of PakistanChairman of the Sate Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe accepted credentials of newly-accredited Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to the Union of Myanmar Mr Mian Yousuf Shah at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 10 am today. Also present on the occasion were Secretary-l of the State Peace and, Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.
(2) Government striving to introduce full mechanization, General Maung Aye meets local authorities, departmental personnel in Magway
YANGON, 29 Aug-Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye met with departmental personnel and local authorities in Magway yesterday.
On arrival at Magway Airport, the General and party were welcomed by Commander of No 88 Light Infantry Division Brig-Gen Aye Kyway, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and officials.
At the town hall, the General met with members of Magway Division Peace and Development Council, local authorities of Magway, Minbu, Pakokku, Thayet,. Gangaw, Magway and Minbu districts and division-level officials.
General Maung Aye said efforts can be made to exceed the targets in laying down and implementing short-term plans for national progress. Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha explained the objectives of the projects of Magway Division, accomplishments and developments.
The General gave suggestions. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and the ministers arrived at the town hall in advance and coordinated with officials and local authorities.
Brig-Gen Thein Zaw reported to the meeting on the regional climate, natural resources, water availability, cultivation of crops such as paddy, cotton, sugarcane, oil crops, sesame, pedisein and corn, per acre yields of the crops, regional population, efforts being made to ensure regional rice sufficiency in 2001-2002, paddy purchase system, regional economic progress up to the end of July 2000, and regional greening projects.
Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained paddy purchase arrangements. The Secretary-3 said all-round efforts are being made for progress of states and divisions. Pumped-water projects have been implemented in the division and implementing of the nine, districts greening project is in progress. Such efforts are followed by good results such as change in the climate and. increase in rainfall. Based on these good results, efforts should be made for progress of agriculture sector.
Priority should be given to ensuring regional food sufficiency. Up to now only10 per cent of the projected land has been reclaimed in the division. More attention should be paid to the land reclamation project.
Rapid regional progress can be achieved if livestock breeding is added to the agriculture tasks. As the division has many pastures, it is suitable to raise cattle and goat. The government is giving encouragement for progress of the livestock-breeding sector.
Thus, all should strive to reclaim more land in the division, ensure regional food sufficiency, and to develop both the agriculture and livestock breeding sectors.
Central Executive Committee members of Union Solidarity and Development Association U Soe Tha, Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, U Thaung and Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint met with the Secretary of Magway Division-USDA, executives, secretaries and members of District and Township USDAs at Magway Division USDA Office.
(3) Secretary-1 receives Chairman of Asian Maternal and Child Welfare Association
YANGON, 29 Aug-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman of Asian Maternal and Child Welfare Association Mr Yoichi Yamaguchi and party from Japan at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 PM today. Present together with the Secretary-1 were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.
(4) Secretary-1 attends cash presentation Ceremony for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill
YANGON, 29 Aug-A ceremony to present cash for all-round construction of Mindhamma Hill at which Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image is to be kept was held at the Central Pandal on Mindhamma Hill this morning, attended by Patron of All-round Construction of Mindhamma Hill Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present on the occasion were ministers, the Mayor Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee, deputy ministers, the Vice-Mayor, officials at the State Peace and Development Council Office and Fund Raising Committee, and well wishers.
Aung Khin and Minster for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the well wishers.
Chairman of Finance Sub-committee Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa reported on donations. The Secretary-l thanked the well wishers for their donations to construct religious buildings on Mindhamma Hill for public obeisance to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image. Goodwill and generosity of the people marvelously grew within one month from the time the image emerged from Sakyintaung in Madaya Township in Mandalay Division, he said.
He said the image was conveyed onto the hill for prosperity of all and freedom of dangers. He wished that all those who donated cash for the image to be prosperous. Donations for all-round construction of Mindhamma.
(5) Secretary-2 receives Vice-Chairman of Song Won Group of ROK
YANGON, 29 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo received Vice-Chairman Mr Kim Young Jo and party of Song Won Group of the Republic of Korea at the ministers office of Ministry of Mines on Kanbe Road, here, this afternoon. Also present on the occasion were Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint., Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy. Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun and departmental officials.
(6) Secretary-2 attends cash donation ceremony for public welfare work
YANGON, 29 Aug-A ceremony to donate cash for public welfare work implemented by Thanmyanthu Economic Enterprise was held at City Hall this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and officials accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to donors. Thanmyanthu Work Group Committee, Win Yadana Trans port Services, Lasanda Printing Ink and Paper services and Moe Htet Myanmar Co presented cash to headmasters of Mary

(7) Coordination meeting on production of four main crops held
YANGON, 29 Aug-A coordination meeting on production of four main crops, paddy, beans and pulses, cotton and sugarcane was held at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation this morning, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt.-Gen Tin Oo.
Also present were member of thc State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the directors-general and Management director of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation. The Secretary-2 spoke on the use and distribution of strains of paddy and regular maintenance of farmland. In conclusion, the method of extending sown acreage, boosting the yield, and minimizing waste should be applied in growing the nation’s four main crops.
Then, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung reported on production of paddy, beans, com, edible oil crops, cotton and sugarcane, use of quality strains, arrangements for extension of paddy special zone and cotton special zone and cultivation of sugarcane for sugar mills.
Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than explained cultivation of 1.2 million acres of land under monsoon paddy in Yangon Division, cooperation of farmers needed for distribution of pedigree paddy strains, yield of paddy in Yangon Division, purchase system, rice sufficiency for the populace of Yangon Division in addition to service personnel and use of commercially profitable strains in production of sugarcane.
Minister for Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt reported on reclamation of vacant and virgin land on both sides along Ngahsutaung-Kya-in Road under construction. After hearing reports, the Secretary-2 attended to their needs and gave the concluding remarks.
(8) Minister meets Ambassador of Israel
YANGON, 29 Aug-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Ambassador of Israel Mr Baruch Ram at his office at 2 PM today. Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Lt-Col Khin Maung Kyaw and officials.
(9)President of APR-Norinco International calls on Minister
YANGON, 29 Aug-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig Gen Win Tin met President of APR-Norinco International Pte Ltd Mr Li Hai Dong and party of Singapore at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Managing Director of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications U Maung Maung Tin and officials.
(10) Minister for Health arrives back
YANGON, 29 Aug-A Myanmar health delegation led by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein arrived back here by air this evening after attending the 18th Meeting of the Health Ministers and High-ranking Officials of WHO in South-East Asian Region in Kathmandu, Nepal, from 20 to 26 August.
The minister was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Ministers for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo and Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, Ambassador of Nepal General Satchit Shumshere J B Rana, departmental heads of departments under the ministry, Resident Representative of WHO Dr Agostino Borra and their relatives. Member of the delegation Deputy Director of Health Planning Department Dr Pe Thet Tun also arrived back on the same flight.
Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein made a speech at the opening ceremony of the 18th Meeting of the Health Ministers and High-ranking Officials of WHO in South-East Asian Region in Kathmandu, Nepal. The meeting elected Minister of Health Dr Ram Baran Yadav of Nepal as Chairman and Minister of Health Mr Ahmed Abdullah of Maldives as Vice-Chairman for 2000-2001 year.
On 23 August, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein paid a courtesy call on King of Nepal Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and presented endeavours of Myanmar government for development of the country and cooperation in health sector between the two countries.
On 26 August, the minister met Prime Minister of Nepal Mr Ginija Prasad Koirila and Minister of Health Dr Ram Baran Yadav separately. They discussed cooperation in health sector between the two countries and Nepalese students to study at Institute of Medicine in Myanmar.
The minister also met Minister of Health Mr Dr Lyonpo Sangay Ngedup of Bhutan and Minister of Health Mr Ahmed Abdullah of Maldives. They coordinated students from these countries to be attend under and post graduate courses of Institute of Medicine in Myanmar and hire of Myanmar doctors and nurses. The minister observed health care system and National TB Control Centre in Siddhartha Naga and Dulkihel. On its return, the health delegation visited Calcutta Institute of Public Health and Hygiene. And the delegation met officials of Lyka Labs Ltd.
(11) Cash donated for construction for Commemorative Museum for Drug Eradication
YANGON, 29 Aug-A ceremony to donate cash for construction of Commemorative Museum for Drug Eradication was held at the office of Minister for Home Affairs this morning. It was attended by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, officials and well-wishers. Donations were U Myint Kyin Ti, Daw Myint Myint Kei of Universe Co, Chaatha Construction . Chairman of Central Committee for Drug abuse Control Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing accepted the donations and spoke words of thanks.
Five players chosen for Upper Myanmar
YANGON,29 Aug-Trials for choosing five players of Upper Myanmar for the First Tiger Beer Million Baht Kick was held at Bahtoo Stadium in Mandalay on 26 and 27 August. Among 167 persons who took part in the trials, 31 were selected on 26 August and among 127, 27 were chosen on 27 August. Out of 58 players, five players for Upper Myanmar Kyaw Dun (Railways Mandalay), Maung Maung Myint (Chanayethazan), Ko Gyi (MCDC), Aung Kyaw Moe (MAPT-Mandalay) and Myo Zaw Oo (MCDC) were chosen after the second day trials. Only one selection for the country will be chosen among 10 tentatively selected players from Upper and Lower Myanmar at Padomma Sports Ground in Sangyoung Township on 9 September.
Third Inter-State/Division Shooting Tournament opens
YANGON, 29 Aug-The Third Inter-State/Division Shooting Tournament, organized by Myanmar Shooting federation, was opened at Okkalapa Shooting Range this morning.
Present were Vice- Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, General Secretary of MOC Director-General of Sports and Physical Education U Thaung Htaik, Patron of MSF Director of Ordnance Col Hla Tun, President of MSF Deputy Director of Ordnance Col Win Than, Commandant of Defence Services General Hospital Col Tin Thein Lwin, Secretary of MSF Staff Officer (Grade-1) Lt-Col Bo Lwin and officials and spectators. Director General U Thaung Htik gave a speech: The tournament will last up to 4 September.
(13) A coord meeting on Golden Triangle Friendship Trade Fair 2000 held
YANGON, 29 Aug- A coordination meeting on the Golden Triangle Friendship Trade Fair 2000, to be sponsored by Regina International Co Ltd of Thailand, with assistance of Ministry of Commerce and supervision of Shan State (East) Peace and Development Council, was held at Ministry of Commerce this afternoon, with an address by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan. The- Trade Fair will be held in Tachilek from 27 October to 5 November. Also present on the occasion were departmental heads, chairmen and executives of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar Garment Manufacturers Association and Myanmar Forest Products and Timber Merchants_ Association and officials. After hearing reports, the deputy minister explained necessary matters.
Myanmar, China, Laos and Thailand, four nations of Mekong Sub-region, will participate in the Trade Fair with the aims to seek markets for Myanma products, develop Shan State (East) and Tachilek region, promote economic cooperation with Mekong region nations and strengthen friendly relations among the four nations.
(14) Drug trafficker, user get fifteen years
YANGON,29 Aug-A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Mawlamyine Anti-drug Squad and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of U Yut of Taungpa Village in Mudon Township and arrested U Yut, 55, of Taungpa Village and Khaing Htane, 46, of the same village together with 209.22 grams of opium, 205.04 grams of low-grade opium, 36.74 grams of opium oil and paraphernalia for smoking on 4 February.
Kamarwat Myanmar Police Force, Mudon Township, filed them under Sections 15/ 19(A)/20(A)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Mawlamyine district Court handed down five years_ imprisonment under Section 15 and fifteen years_ imprisonment under Section 19(A) on U Yut to serve separately and five years_ imprisonment under Section 15 on Khaing Htane on 9 June.
(15) 26 Taungdwingyi Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 29 Aug-Twenty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taungdwingyi Township, Magway Division. Twenty-six members of Taungdwingyi Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Taungdwingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 15 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
