(1) Secretary-1 inspects religious exhibits at Sixth Buddhist Synod MuseumYANGON, 24 Aug-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the Sixth Buddhist Synod Museum on Kaba Aye Hill at 4 pm. today.
They were welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, the deputy minister and departmental officials. Then, the Secretary- 1 inspected paintings and relief from the First to the Sixth Buddhist Synods, documentary photos and statues of Sayadaws who took part in the Sixth Buddhist Synod, documentaries, religious books, documentary photos of the Sixth Buddhist Synod and historic religious objects bearing the seal of the Sixth Buddhist Synod, and gave instructions to officials and left there in the evening.
(2) Special vegetable and livestock farming zone of Yangon Division making progress
YANGON, 24 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Deve10pment Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected the special vegetable and livestock farming zone of Yangon Division at Nyaunghnapin Village, Hmawby Township. Yangon North District, this afternoon. Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Provost Marshal Brig-Gen Saw Hla and officials, the Secretary-2 arrived at the zone at 3 PM.
At the briefing hall, the Secretary-2 heard a report on progress of land preparation and cultivation of crops at three zones covered by the special zone, and allotment of land for chicken incubation and poultry farming, presented by Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for the Zone _Head of Yangon Division General Administration Department U Thein Swe.
Director of Yangon Division Irrigation Department U Tin Maung Win reported to the Secretary-2 on progress of building drains and roads on a 500-acre plot and future programmes, Head of Yangon Division Water Resources Utilization Department U Myint Soe on arrangements for water supply, Division Electric Engineer U Zaw Win on installation of transforms to supply power to the zone and the, area of land put under vegetables by the Ministry of Electric power, and Deputy General Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U Than Aye on installation of a laboratory to analyze crop insects and to ensure safety of vegetable consumes. Officials of the enterprises which are working in the zone such as Super Rain Enterprise Limited and Landmark Co Ltd presented reports on application of dripping system, use of power tillers undesired system and sale of power-tillers -to entrepreneurs-and farmers in installments.
Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported to the Secretary-2 on arrangements being made by the departments and enterprises to grow crops on the allotted land, plans to ensure power supply to the zone, utilization of power-tillers, and arrangements being made to supply power to the zone beginning 1 September 2000, and sinking of tube-wells to irrigate the crops.
Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the governments giving priority to the boosting of production, and promotion of export and the industrial sectors; efforts are required to extend the agriculture and livestock breeding sectors. The government is providing land, water, seeds, fertilizers, pesticides which are the main needs of the agriculture sector; and entrepreneurs are urged to work with greater momentum. Efforts should be made to boost the output of farm produce.
The Secretary-2 and party then observed use of EM super bolkashi fertilizers in the paddy fields of the zone. A total of 456 acres have been put under vegetables in the zone. In Yangon Division, 48,999 acres have been put under monsoon paddy for 2000 2001 cultivation season, using EM super bolkashi fertilizer as the main nutrient for the plants. The fertilizer will be used on another 100,000 acres of. monsoon paddy fields.
At Balar and Thayagon villages, the Secretary-2 and party inspected digging of fish breeding ponds with the use of heavy machinery. Myanmar Pyithahayh (KN) Company under the supervision of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries is setting up a fish farm in the region.

(3) Minister for F&R meets Group President of Fujitsu Ltd
YANGON, 2 4 Aug-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met Group President Dr Kazuo Murano of Fujitsu Ltd, Japan and party at his office at 2 PM today. Also present at the call v was U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar.
Minister receives Vice-Chancellor of Auckland University of Technology
YANGON, 24 Aug- Minister for Education U Than Aung received Vice-Chancellor of Auckland University of Technology of New Zealand Dr John Hinchcliff and party at Diamond Jubilee Hall on Pyay Road this evening. They discussed matters related to educational cooperation. Also present were Deputy Ministers for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and U Myo Nyunt. Director-General of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) U Saw Lwin, Director-General of Higher Education Department (Upper Myanmar) Dr Thein Myint and officials.
Deputy Minister meets foreign guests
YANGON, 24 Aug- Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Mya Oo met Mr Patrick Brown of Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and party at noon at his office on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Street at 2 PM today. Also present on the occasion were responsible officials of the ministry.
(4) Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister of LPDR and party conclude visit
YANGON, 24 Aug- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Mr Somsavat Lengsavad and party, after attending the Fifth Meeting of the Myanmar-Lao Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation held at Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 21 and 22 August, left here for home by air this morning. Before their departure, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung paid a farewell call on him at Sedona Hotel at 9.30 am. They were seen off at the airport by Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, responsible officials, Laotian Ambassador Mr Ly Bounkham and Embassy staff.
(5) Contract for purchase of bore piling machines signed
YANGON, 24 Aug-A ceremony to sign contract between Public Works of Ministry of Construction and Casagrande SPA Italy for purchasing two sets of Casagrande C 600 HD Bore Piling Machines was held at Public Works (Head Office) on Shwedagon Pagoda Road this evening.
Present were Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Ministers for Construction U Tint Swe and Brig-Gen Myint Thein, directors-general and managing directors of the ministry, invited guests, President of Casagrande SPA Italy Mr Sergio Casagrande and officials. Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun delivered a speech.
In conclusion ,may I again convey my gratitude to Casssgrande SPA of Italy for their hearty co-operation. May I also extend my good wishes for your personal well-being and a very pleasant stay in Myanmar. (6) Birth Spacing Refresher Course opened
YANGON, 24 Aug-A Refresher Course on Birth Spacing for the instructors in Yangon Division co-organized by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and United Nations Population Fund was held at the multipurpose hall of MMCWA at the corner of Thanthuma Street and Parami
Road in South Okkalapa Township this morning, attended by Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and CEC members of MMCWA, Patron of Supervisory Committee of Yangon Division MCWA Daw Marlar Tint, Chairman Dr Tin Maung Win and officials of Yangon Division MCWA, Regional Director Dr Shiela Macrae of United Nations Population Fund and officials and instructors from the townships in Yangon Division. Chairperson Prof Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Regional Director Dr Shiela Macrae delivered addresses.
Secretary Dr Khin Myitzu Han, Joint-Secretary-2 Dr Nwe Oo and CEC member Dr Than Oo of MMCWA gave lectures to 90 trainees from Khayan, Thongwa, Kyauktan, Hlegu, Hmawby and Taikkyi Townships which are included in the Birth Spacing Project.
(7) Special tribunal hears criminal and civil appeals in Mandalay
YANGON, 24 Aug-A special tribunal of the Supreme Court of Justice with Chief Justice U Aung Toe as chairman- arid members Vice Chief Justice U Khin Maung Latt of the Supreme Court (Mandalay) and Justice U Sein Tint Yee heard six criminal appeals at the Supreme Court (Mandalay) on 21 August.
On 22 August, a special tribunal of the Supreme Court with Chief Justice U Aung Toe as chairman and members Vice-Chief Justice U Khin Maung Latt of the Supreme Court (Mandalay) and Justice U Myint Aung heard six civil appeals at the Supreme Court (Mandalay).
(8) Officials discuss southern Wa region development, drug abuse control
YANGON, 24 Aug-The Steering Committee for Drug Abuse Control and Southern Wa Region Development Project held its fourth meeting in Kengtung, Shan State (East) on 23 August.
Present on the occasion were Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, In Charge of Bangkok based Asia and Pacific Regional Office of United Nations Drug Control Programme Mr Sandro Calvani, representative5 of Wa Special Region 2 led by U Pau Laik Kham, General Staff Officer (Grade-l) of Directorate of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Col San Pwint, General Staff Officer (Grade-l) of the Office of Strategic Studies Lt-Col Min Lwin, Deputy Director General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Lt Col Myint Swe, officials and guests. Speaking on the occasion, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win said the committee has already held three meetings in Yangon; the assessment committee has already presented the strong points and weak points; the meeting was held in Kengtung to ensure convenience of representatives of Wa region. Discussions should centre on solving problems, drawing of the future programme in accord with the regional equipment and receiving of funds for the project.
Adviser to the Project Mr John Bruce Dalton reported to the meeting on accomplishments, and Mr Sandro Calvani on the project appraisal reports. U Pau Laik Kham and other participants also took part in the discussions.

(9) Measures taken to put Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image onto the throne
YANGON, 24 Aug-Engineers and employees of Myanma Railways and Myanma Electric Power Enterprise are working hard to convey Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on the throne of Mindhamma Hill under the close supervision of Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung. Measures are being taken to raise the Image up to four feet above the retaining wall and to put the Image on B-Frame, which will convey the Image from the retaining wall up to the foot of the throne. Tracks are being laid from the Image to the foot of the throne. Donations - received for the funds of the Image from 5 August to date totalled K 26.701.067.
Prizes presented to winners of Third Inter-Ministry Judo Championship Tournament
YANGON, 24 Aug-The final matches and prize presentation ceremony of the Third Inter-Ministry Judo Championship were held at Aung San Gymnasium this afternoon. Three matches of men’s A-division and three matches of women’s A-division were held.
The patrons for the Judo events of Myanmar Women’s Sports Federation, Deputy Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Lt-Col Thein Aung and officials, President U Hla Thaung Myint of Myanmar Judo Federation and executives and fans attended the ceremony.
First, President U Hla Thaung Myint and President of Yangon Division Judo Sub-committee U Min Zaw Tun presented cash to the winners of the Sixth South-East Asia Judo Tournament and the Eighth International Invitational Judo Tournament.
Pa~ron Daw Aye Aye Myint presented prizes to the winners of women’s (A) events and Executive Committee Member of the MJF U Ba Hein to the winners of men’s (A) events.
Then, best player prizes were presented by Patron Daw Hla Hla Yee, Director U Zaw Lin and Vice-President Daw Kyu Kyu. Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Thein Aung presented Championship Shields to Forestry Men’s Team and Industry-l Women’s Team and President U Hla Thaung Myint Versatile Championship Shield to Agriculture and Irrigation Team.
First Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000-2001 begins
YANGON, 24 Aug-The First Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour 2000 2001, Jointly I organized by Myanmar | professional Golfers Association and Rothmans of Pall Mall Myapmar Pte Ltd was opened at Bagan Resort Golf Club in Mandalay Division this morning. Chairman of NyaungU District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Khin Maung Oo, U Myint Thein of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd and member of the Executive Committee of Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar Professional Golfer’s Association U Ko Ko Lay formally opened the tournament.
On the first day, Soe Kyaw Naing leads the professional golfer’s event with 68 strokes, Win Naing Tun with 71, Win Aung with 72, Min Lwin Oo with 72, Zaw Oo with 73, Myint Shwe with 73 and Myint Thaung with 73. Min Naing leads the amateur’s event with 72 strokes, Zaw Zaw Latt with 73, Yin Htwe with 73, Aung Aung Kyaw (Mandalay) with 74and Nanda Kyaw (YCDC) with 74. The first leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour is organized by Han Golf Masters Pte Ltd. The tournament will continue tomorrow.

(11) Diplomats and military attaches visit Mandalay
YANGON, 24 Aug-Deputy of diplomats Ambassador of Lao People’s Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham, ambassadors and military attaches led by Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, accompanied by Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet, Director-General of Department for Civil Aviation U Win Maung, left here by air this morning and arrived at Mandalay International Airport at 11.20 am. They were welcomed there by General Manager of Department for Civil Aviation Lt-Col Tun Hlaing and officials.
The deputy minister, the ambassadors and party toured the Mandalay Internationa1 Airport. The study tour delegation left Mandalay International Airport at 12.45 PM and arrived at Mandalay at 2 PM today. They visited Myanansankyaw Shwenandaw and Atumashi Kyaungtaik. The delegation arrived back here at 5 PM today.
(12) Drug traffickers get prison terms
YANGON, 24 Aug-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit, Myitkyina Anti drug Squad and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, while waiting near Nan Gway Station, searched a car with number plate Bha/ 3360 and arrested San Kyi, 39, and San Yee of Khaymarthi Ward, Myitkyina together with 8 packets of Ephedrine weighting 98 kilos at 6.45 pm on 16 February.
On further investigation, the authorities arrested Ohn Maung (a) Ohn Para Sap of Khaymarthi Ward, Naw Hlaing (a) Min Chan, 40, of Kachinsu Ward, Myitkyina, Kyaw Swa, 26, of Dugaung Ward, Taning, Hla Myint, 46, of Ponkhon Ward, Taning, and Majila (a) Mutu, 35, of Mahaaungmyay Township, Mandalay for their involvement in the case. The No 2 Myitkyina Police Force filed them under section 15/16(B)/21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
The Myitkyina District Court handed down ten years_ imprisonment under Section 16 (B) on San Yee, San Kyi, Naw Hlaing (a) Min Chan, Kyaw Swa, Hla Myint and Majila (a) Mutu and ten years_ imprisonment under Section 16 (B) and three years_ imprisonment under Section 15 on Ohn Maung (a) Ohn Para Sap to serve separately on 24 June 2000.
(13) 35 Hlegu Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 24 Aug-Thirty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Barlar Village-tract, Hlegu Township, Yangon Division. Thirty-five members of Hlegu Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Hlegu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 15 March 2000 as they no longer wished to Participate in party politics of NLD.
