(1) Secretary-1 meets Deputy Prime Minister of Lao PDR

YANGON, 22 Aug- Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People s Democratic Republic Mr Somsavat Lengsavad and party at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 4 PM today. Also present together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Director-General of Political Department U Nyunt Maung Shein. The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham.


(2) Holding of 10th Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Military Band Competition coordinated

YANGON, 22 Aug- A meeting was held this morning at the Directorate of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute to coordinate holding of the I 0th Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Military Band Competition of the 56th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, with an address delivered by Patron of the 10th Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Military Band Competition Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

The Chief of Staff (Army) said systematic arrangements should be made to ensure convenient transport, accommodation, and training for the increasing number of participating teams in the Tenth Competition.

The aim of the Competition is to raise the spirit of national defence with the help of the military bands, to promote the performance of the military bands, and to disseminate the technique of the military bands.

He called for cooperative efforts for the success of the Competition. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than gave suggestions on successful holding of the Competition. Chairman of the Committee Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo reported to the meeting on the plans to hold the Competition. Staff Office (Grade-l) of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) Lt-Col Hla Thein Swe explained formation of the committees at different levels for successfully holding of the Competition.

The Chief of Staff (Army) urged all the respective committees to strive for holding of the Competition on a grand scale.


(3) Favourable conditions exist for greater participation of private sector in export business

YANGON, 22 Aug- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo met with exporters and importers at the Ministry of Commerce this afternoon.

Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said the Ministry of Commerce is striving hand in hand with the entrepreneurs for firm progress of the trade enterprises. Encouragement must be given to the private sector as favourable conditions exist for its greater participation in the export business.

It is important for the entrepreneurs to strike a balance between self-interest and the national interest; and to understand and practise the system of  exports first, and imports second  to narrow the gap between the nation s exports and imports.

Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone said the meeting was held with the aim of contributing convenience and smoothness to the functions of the exporters and importers and helping them promote export of finished products. He also explained the trade rules and principles. President of UMFCCI U Win Myint explained accomplishments of the federation. Exporters and importers presented requirements. The Secretary-2 gave suggestions.

(4) Secretary-3 attends-cash donation ceremony of Japan JTM Co

YANGON, 22 Aug-A cash donation ceremony of JTM Company of Japan to develop technology and provide stipend to outstanding students in the courses opened by Headquarters of Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at the Headquarters at 3.45 PM today, attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Present on the occasion were Secretary-General of USDA U Than Aung, Secretariat member U Ko Lay, Members of Central Executive Committee U Than Shwe and Col Tin Hlaing, officials and donors.

Mr Tsuyoshi Watanabe of JTM Co of Japan explained about the cash donation and presented Y 2,000,000 to Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint. Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint presented a certificate of honour to the donor and spoke words of thanks.


(5) Fifth Meeting of Myanmar-Laos Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation held

YANGON, 22 Aug-The visiting Lao PDR delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Somsavat Lengsavad called on Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung at his office at 9.30 am today.

They discussed regional and international affairs. At 10 am, the Fifth Meeting of the Myanmar-Laos Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation was held at Wunzinminyaza Hall of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Present on the occasion were Co-Chairman of the meeting Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and members of the Myanmar delegation and Co-Chairman of the meeting Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Somsavat Lengsavad and members. At the opening session, two leaders cordially discussed a wide range of bilateral issues of mutual interest with a view to further enhancing the existing traditional friendship and cooperation between the two countries. At the end of the meeting, the two leaders signed the Agreed Minutes of the Meeting. In the evening, Minister U Win Aung hosted dinner at Karaweik Palace in honour of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Somsavat Lengsavad and party.

Before the ministerial meeting, the Senior Officials Meeting of the Myanmar-Laos Joint Commission for bilateral Cooperation was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 21 August.

Present on the occasion were the Myanmar delegation led by Director-General U Nyunt Maung Shien of the Political Affairs Department and the Lao PDR delegation led by Permanent Secretary of the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs Mr. Bounkeut Sangsomsack. They discussed bilateral relations and matters of common interests.

(6) Minister meets Chinese delegation

YANGON, 22 Aug-Minister for Industry- 1 U Aung Thaung met Vice-Secretary-General Mr Peng Qing Hai of the People s Government of Hainan Province at his office this morning. Also present at the call were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun and Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, directors-general and managing directors of department-s and enterprises.

Mayor meets SRV Ambassador

YANGON, 22 Aug - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay met Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa at his office this morning.

Also present at the call were Vice-Chairman of YCDC Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Secretary of YCDC Col Myint Aung, YCDC members and officials of the respective departments.

Officials of UMFCCI meet with foreign guests

YANGON, 22 Aug-A team led by Chairman Mr Kazi Akramuddin Ahmed and party of the Board of Directors of Standard Bank Ltd, accompanied by Charge d'Affaires ai of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Mr Muhammad Azizul Haque, called on President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, Vice-Presidents U Htein Win and U Win Aung, General-Secretary U Zaw Min Win and CEC members at the office of UMFCCI at 11 am today. They discussed matters related to promotion of trade between the two countries, border trade and import of rolling stocks.


(7) Pumped- water projects to irrigate 40,000 more acres in Budalin Township

YANGON, 22 Aug- Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected a cotton farm of Myanma Cotton and Sericulture Enterprise in Sagaing Township, Sagaing Division, on 21 August.

Managing Director of MCSE Dr Thein Htay reported to the minister on quality seeds, dissemination of farming techniques to farmers, and cultivation of cotton. Accompanied by officials and members of Sagaing Division Agricultural Coordination Committee, the minister inspected the model plots. In Dabayin Township, Shwebo District, the minister inspected inflow of water at YeU. feeder canal, intake structures of Kabo Dam, and paddy double cropping. The minister and party then inspected pumped-water project in Budalin Township, Monywa District.

Director-General U Win Shwe of Water Resources Utilization Department reported to the minister on pumping- water from Chindwin river, canal system, sluice gates and the Budalin and Indaw Pumped water projects in Monywa District.

The projects at their completion will irrigate 40,000 extra acres in Budalin Township. The minister met with loca1 authorities, departmental personnel and farmers. At Indaw Pumped-Water Project, the minister heard a report on its points. As the project will irrigate 10,000 more acres in the areas, the officials and local farmers should make plans to conduct regional farming in the most effective way, the minister said, adding special zones should be set up in putting land under triple cropping.

This morning, the minister and party inspected repair of heavy equipment, storage and transport materials at a workshop of Irrigation Department in Pyigyitagon Township, Mandalay Division.

(8) Minister for Transport inspects seismographs

YANGON, 22 Aug-Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Director-General Col Nyan Tun Aung of Transport Planning Department and officials inspected ten sets high intensity seismographs donated to Earthquake Section of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology by Oyo Corporation of Japan at the head office of DMH on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, Mayangon Township this morning.

Director General U Htay Aung of DMH reported on the capacity of the instruments and working processes. The minister gave instructions on systematic installation of the instruments, sending weather reports without delay and correct and precise forecast.

Then, Director General U Htay Aung reported on set-up of the staff, work of meteorology, hydrology and agriculture, work of meteorology and earthquake, international cooperation, latest technology and the world to be done to hold international workshop. Adviser on earthquake U Khin Myint explained nature of earthquake earthquakes, in Myanmar, the condition of network of measuring intensity to be implemented in Myanmar, plans on forecast of earthquakes in ASEAN countries, displacement of the world continents . The minister gave necessary instructions. The ten sets of seismograph worth US$ 200,000 were donated to Earthquake Section of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology by Oyo Corporation of Japan at he opening ceremony of a seminar on seismology co-sponsored by World Seismic Safety Initiative and DMH held at the head office of DMH on 7 and 8 December 1999.

A workshop on network of high intensity earthquakes will be held at the head office of DMH from 28 to 29 September this year. Plans are under way to install the seismographs and start work in Yangon, Mandalay, Sittway, Myitkyina, Monywa, Meiktila, Bagan (NaungU), Maubin, Bago and Thayawady.


(9) Minister inspects factory of Myanmar Matsushita Electric Works

YANGON, 22 Aug-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin arrived at Myanmar Matsushita Electric Works Ltd, jointly established by Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries and Matsushita Electric Works Ltd of Japan, at 10 am today.

The minister was welcomed there by Managing Director U Kyaw Win of Myanma Machine Tool and Electrical Industries and officials. The minister heard reports on location, construction of buildings, stockpile of machinery, organizational set-up, production and distribution. Then, the minister inspected the factory of the Myanmar Matsushita Electric Works Ltd.

Myanmar Matsushita Electric Works Ltd will produce 17 kinds of electrical fittings and plastic parts and will be distributed the products to local and foreign markets.

(10) Refresher Course for Instructors of Birth-spacing Project Townships opens

YANGON, 22 Aug-The Refresher Course for Instructors of Birth-spacing Project Townships in Yangon Division and Rakhine State, organized by Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and UNFPA, was opened at MMCWA Building at the corner of Thanthuma and Parami Roads in South Okkalapa Township this morning.

Present were Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Central Executive Committee members, Deputy Resident Representative of UNFPA Daw Khin Ma Ma Aye and officials and trainee instructors from the townships.

First, Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Deputy Resident Representative Daw Khin Ma Ma Aye gave speeches.

At the refresher course, Secretary of MMCWA Dr Daw Khin Myinzu Han, Joint-Secretary Dr Daw Nwe Oo and CEC member Dr Than Oo gave lectures. A total of 75 trainee instructors from Twantay, Kungyangon and Kawhmu townships in Yangon Division and Sittway Township in Rakhine State are attending the course.


(11) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image raised to 22ft of retaining wall

YANGON, 22 Aug-Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image was crowded with members of the Sangha, nuns and devotees at Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township today. Engineers and employees of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise and Myanma Railways, supervised by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, continued to convey the image onto the 28-foot-high retaining wall. Workers of Public Works also undertook the construction of the eastern retaining wall of the hill. At 7 PM today, the image was raised up to 22 feet of the retaining wall and there remains only six feet to reach the top of the wall. 'Wut' associations recited religious verses on the hill from 9 AM to 10 PM. Donations by the public have amounted to K 25,253,566 from 5 August to date.


(12) 330 drug-related cases exposed in July

YANGON, 22 Aug-The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department exposed 330 drug-related cases in July.

The authorities seized 41.8319 kilos of opium in 30 cases, 5.2188 kilos of heroin in 129 cases, 476.1257 kilos of opium oil in three cases, 3.9922 kilos of low-grade opium in 16 cases, 38.9149 kilos of marijuana in 59 cases, 9.47 liters of Phensedyl in five cases, 244,147 stimulant tablets in 37 cases, 13.349 kilos of chemical powder, one litre of methadone in one case, 0.0327 kilo of stimulant powder in one case, 37 cases for failure to register and 12 other cases.

The Tatmadaw regiments and units seized 8,900 stimulant tablets in 21 cases. The MPF also seized 10,3184 kilos of opium in 21 cases, 1.2769 kilos of heroin in 103 cases, 0.0201 kilo of opium oil in two cases, 3.5522 kilos of low-grade opium in 16 cases, 37.2754 kilos of marijuana in 57 cases, 1.24 liters of Phensedyl in one case, 135,339 stimulant tablets in 26 cases, 13.349 kilos of chemical powder, 0.0327 kilo of stimulant powder in one case, 37 cases for failure to register and 12 other cases.

Seizures by the Tatmadaw and the MPF were 31.5135 kilos of opium in nine cases, 3.9419 kilos of heroin in 26 cases, 476.1056 kilos of opium oil in one case, 0.44 kilo of low-grade opium, 1.6395 kilos of marijuana in one case, 8.23 liters of Phensedyl in four cases, 99,908 stimulant tablets in 10 cases and one litre of methadone in one case. Action was taken against 465 culprits 376 men and 89 women in 330 cases in July.

Among drug-related cases in July, a combined team, acting on information, searched heroin trafficker U Yan Wai Phyint and U Aung Phu at the corner of Thissa and Naungpyat Village Roads in Ward 4 in Kutkai Township on 20 July.

The team seized 1.08 kilos of heroin kept in soap boxes in the knapsack of U Yan Wai Phyint and one M-20 pistol, one magazine and five rounds of ammunition from U Aung Phu. Kutkai Police Station took action against U Yan Wai Phyint and U Aung Pyu and persons of drug-related case Daw Ashan and Daw Ai Kyin.

On 23 July, a combined team searched a car with numberplate 2Ka/1128 driven by Min Naing leaving from Mongshu to Lashio at Tangyan Junction. The authorities nabbed passenger Ma Hu Kyein Phaw with 0.0082 kilo of opium oil cake. Yan Dai Cho, who was fellow of her, escaped. After arresting Yan Dai Cho, the team members seized 12 packets of opium weighing 20.9841 kilos and seven opium cakes weighing 0.5716 kilo from them. Lashio Police Station took action against them by law.

On 24 July, a combined team searched the house of Ar Kway in Magyibin Village of Banbway Villagetract, Taunggyi Township. They seized WY brand 115,000 stimulant tablets, whitish chemical powder 4.899 kilos, blackish chemical powder 8.49 kilos and two cycles. Taunggyi Police Station-l took action against him.

(13) Vice-Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar leaves for Brunei

YANGON, 22 Aug-Vice-Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Than Lwin left here by air for Brunei Darussalam yesterday evening to attend the ASEAN Finance and Central Bank Deputies Meeting (AFMD) to be held there on 23 August.  The Vice-Governor was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun and heads of department.

Information delegation leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 22 Aug-A delegation led by Director-General U Khin Maung Htay of Myanma Radio and Television of Ministry of Information left here by air this morning for Thailand to attend the second meeting of Information Subcommittee of ASEAN Culture and Information Committee to be held from 23 to 1 25 August in Thailand.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Deputy Director-General Col Thein Aung of MRTV and departmental officials and their families. Members of the delegation are Executive Editor Daw Khin Aye Kyu of News and Periodicals Enterprise, Staff Officer Daw Yin Yin Hla and Technician Grade-l U Hla Myo of MRTV. MNA


(14) 20 Shwebo Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 22 Aug-Twenty members resigned from National League for Democracy of Shwebo Township, Sagaing Division.

Twenty members of Shwebo Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Shwebo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 4 February 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
