(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe  sends felicitations to Hungary

YANGON, 20 Aug- Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and  Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of  felicitation to His Excellency Mr Ferenc Madl, President of the Republic of  Hungary, on the occasion of the National Day of the Republic of Hungary which  falls on 20 August 2000.


(2)  Secretary-1 accepts donations for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni  Image

 YANGON, 19 Aug- Cash donation ceremony for Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni  Image was held on Mindhamma Hill this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the  State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and Minister U Aung Khin  accepted the do Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa reported on the receipt of total  donation amounting to K 125,718,334 and US $ 4,000.

The Secretary- I said well wishers made donations for the Lawka Chantha  Abhaya Labha Muni Image. He said marble stone was found by stone sculptor U  Taw Taw at Sakyintaung in Madaya Township, Mandalay Division and he donated  the enormous stone to the State. The government is making efforts for  emergence of an image for public obeisance, he added.

He said according to the guidance of Senior General Than Shwe, systematic  arrangements are under way to convey the image on Mindhamma Hill with the  help of the Ministry of Rail Transportation and Ministry of Transport and  other ministries. He thanked all well wishers.

Next, the Secretary- 1, the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials  discussed matters relating to formation of work committees and conveyance of  Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on to the Mindhamma Hill. The  Secretary-l and party inspected activities for conveyance of the Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image.


(3)  Secretary- 1 receives Japanese officials

 YANGON, 19 Aug- Secretary- l of the State Peace and Development Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Director-General Mr Tomomitsu Iwakura of Policy  Research Council, Liberal Democratic Party, Japan, and party at Dagon Yeiktha  of Ministry of Defence this afternoon. Also present at the call was  Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(4)  Sangyoung Township BEHS No 3 gets multimedia teaching centre

YANGON, 19 Aug - A ceremony to open the multimedia teaching centre of Basic  Education High School No 3, Sangyoung Township, was held at the school this  afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Headmistress Daw Khin May Thwe and Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U  Kyaw Shwe formally opened the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary- 1 formally unveiled the signboard of the multimedia teaching  centre. Afterwards, the Secretary-l and party inspected the computer and  reading section room, the computer-aided instruction room, the language lab,  the close-circuit television room, the electronic media audio system room,  the educational broadcasting service centre, the school health room, the  painting room, the domestic science room and the arts and aesthetic room, and  the skill demonstration of students.

Then, a ceremony to mark the opening of the multimedia teaching centre was  held in the school hall. Headmistress Daw Khin May Thwe reported on the  school background, the set-up and development of the school, the purpose of  opening of the multimedia teaching centre, the sections of the multimedia  teaching centre and the benefits of opening the multimedia teaching  centre. Chairman of the School Board of Trustees U Kyaw Shwe reported on how  members of the school board of trustees, well-wishers and teachers cooperated  in opening the multimedia teaching centre.

The Secretary-1 accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour  to the well wishers.

Minister for Education U Than Aung also accepted donations including K 50,000  each by Headmistress Daw Khin May Thwe, U Win Hlaing and family, U Win Kyaw  and family and Kaythipan U Hla Myint and K 3.66 million by parents. After  that, the Secretary-1 signed in the visitors' book of the school.

The Secretary-1 presented videotapes  for the multimedia teaching centre to  the Headmistress. The Secretary-l said that according to the education  promotion programmes of the State, efforts are being made to open the  multimedia teaching centres all over the nation; in this regard, the  participation of well-wishers and the people is of great account.

The education promotion programmes are being implemented with the aims to  turn out students of outstanding quality, to ensure emergence of world-class  education and to bridge the gap of education standards between rural and  urban areas. It is found that due to systematic education and training which  has resulted from the opening of the multimedia teaching centres, the gap of  education standards between rural and urban areas is becoming narrower and  narrower' in the light of the recent matriculation exam results, the pass  rate of students from towns has improved, and outstanding students have  emerged.

It is a good result, which can be ascribed to the participation of the public  and parents in the implementation of the education promotion programmes,  systematic teaching and efforts of students. It student youths are nurtured  systematically, they can invariably become stalwart persons on which the  State can rely. In conclusion, the Secretary-1 urged all to strive for  emergence of a peaceful, modern and development nation. After the ceremony,  the Secretary-1 and party, together with members of the school board of  trustees and the parent-teacher association, well wishers, the headmistress  and teachers and students, had photos taken.


(5) Secretary-2 inspects reclamation of fallow and virgin lands and  progress of agricultural projects in Shan State

YANGON 19 Aug- Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen  Tin Oo inspected agricultural work in Ywangan, Yaksauk, Taunggyi and  Nyaungshwe Townships in Shan State (South) yesterday and today.

The Secretary-2, together with member of the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of  Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, the ministers, the deputy ministers and  heads of department, inspected reclamation of fallow and virgin lands being  undertaken by Shwe Than Lwin Agricultural Company Ltd in Ywangan Township  yesterday afternoon.

Managing Director of Shwe Than Lwin Agricultural Company Ltd U Zaw Win Tun  reported on progress of land preparation work on the plots allotted to the  company, progress of work of crop cultivation in 1999-2000 and yield of crops  and growing of monsoon and cold season crops in 2000- 2001.

Chairman of the company U Kyaw Win also gave an additional report. Commander  Maj-Gen Maung Bo reported on assistance being rendered to the company for  agricultural work.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on extension of sown acreage, boosting the  yield of crops, rendering of assistance by local-authorities and cooperation  between local people and the company on a mutually beneficial basis. The  Secretary-2 and party went on an inspection tour of Ywangan by car.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected Township People's Hospital  and met with the medical staff. The Secretary-2 and party flew to Kyaukson  Konchan Plot where Pwint-gaung and Khin Nwe Yee Company is undertaking  reclamation of fallow and virgin lands in Yaksauk Township.

The commandant of Bahtoo Station reported on cultivation work being done by  companies in Yaksauk Township. U Soe Tun, in-charge of Pwint-gaung and Khin  Nwe Yee Company Ltd, reported on agricultural work which has been, carried  out since and progress of work in - claiming 2,211 acres off allow and virgin  lands.

An official of SKK company reported on agricultural work being carried out by  the company in Yaksauk Township and progress of poultry farming. Head of Shan  State Settlement and Land Records Department U Than Soe Aye gave an  additional report. Commander Brig-Gen Maung Bo reported on requirements of  reclamation of fallow and virgin lands, and Minister for Communications,  Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin on arrangements for telephone  communication.

Then, the Secretary-2 gave instructions on implementation of agricultural  projects of companies. Next, the Secretary-2 and party inspected crops  cultivated at Kyaukson Konchao Plot by car. On the allotted plots,  Pwint-gaung and Khin Nwe Yee Company Ltd has cultivated paddy, beans and  pulses, sugar-cane, corn, mangoes, lemons, rubber, wheat, buckwheat, sunflower  and coffee plants; the company is making efforts to cultivate The Secretary-2  and party flew to Taunggyi at 4 PM by helicopter, where they inspected  agricultural work carried out by families of Eastern Command.

Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected Kanbawza Garment Factory of  Shan State (South) Women's Affairs Committee. Then, the Secretary-2 and party  inspected the pre-primary school of Eastern Command. Minister for Commerce  Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, who accompanied the Secretary-2, met with the staff of  Shan State Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading in the evening.

This morning, the Secretary-2 and party went to Ayethaya Myothit Industrial  Zone in Taunggyi Township. Secretary of Regional Industrial Work Committee  Deputy Director of Regional Industrial Coordination and Inspection Department  U Myint Thein reported on allotment of 2,936 plots to industrialists in the  industrial zone, conditions of industries, the building of roads and water  and power supply in the industrial zone. Commander Maj-Gen Maung Bo reported  on efforts made within one year for the development of the industrial zone.  The Secretary-2 gave instructions. After that, the Secretary-2 met with  industrialists.

Then, the Secretary-2 had a cordial meeting with those present. The  Secretary-2 and party inspected private electrical goods industries in  industrial zone. The Secretary-2 and party went to the site of Zeya Aye Chan  Agricultural Project of Super One Co near Ayethaya Myothit. They were  welcomed by Managing Director Daw San San Yi of Super One Co. The Secretary-2  and party inspected cultivation of mustard and "pesinngon".

The Secretary-2 and party inspected Tetchaung poultry farm in Nankut Village.  Proprietor Dr Thein Sein and officials reported on raising of poultry  beginning from l995. The Secretary-2 and party went to the site of Nila Yoma  Co in Ywatha Village tract in Nyaungshwe Township where they were welcomed by  Chairman of Nila Yoma Co U Aung Ko Win. The Secretary-2 and party inspected  winnowing, storage of paddy, cultivation of paddy and land preparation for  monsoon paddy cultivation.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected reclamation of 500 acres for vegetable  plantations in Nyaungshwe Township. The Secretary-2 and party went to  agriculture and live stock breeding camp of Prisons Department in Taunggyi.  Director U Than Oo of Shan/Kayah State Prison Group reported on livestock and  breeding farms. The Secretary-2 then gave instructions and inspected the  farms. The Secretary-2 and party arrived back here in the evening.

(6) Minister inspects Bicycle Accessories and Parts Shop

YANGON, 19Aug- Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Committee Minister  for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by heads of department, arrived at  Bicycle Accessories and Parts Shop of Ko Tha Aung & Brothers in Sinmalaik  Highway Bus Terminal in Kamayut Township this morning.

Minister U Aung Thaung inspected bicycle accessories and parts imported from  abroad, and racing saddle, luggage carrier bicycle frame, chain guards  manufactured by domestic entrepreneurs, and painting of the bicycle body. The  minister and party proceeded to Bicycle Workshop of Ko Tha Aung & Brothers on  Moemakha Street at Ward 64 in Industrial Zone No 2 of Dagon Myothit (South).  The minister inspected manufacturing process of the bicycles at the workshop.  Minister U Aung Thaung observed the bicycle for children made by the  workshop. The minister also inspected functions at the lathe workshop on  Phaunggyi Street.


(7)Minister and Mayor inspect Uto farm

 YANGON l9 Aug- Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and Chairman of  Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay inspected the agricultural  farm of Yangon City Development Committee and ploughing work being done by  using tractors and Ayeya-1 Power Tillers manufactured by the Ministry of  Industry-2, at the recreation camp of YCDC in Uto-KyaIn region in Taikkyi  Township yesterday morning. Then, they inspected paddy thrashing machines,  harvesters, power tillers, tractors, tractor-trailers, ploughshares and  agricultural equipment manufactured by the Ministry of Industry-2. They also  inspected construction of a 25-ton rice mill and paddy drier.


(8)   Contract signed for purchase of steel frames

YANGON, 19 Aug-  A ceremony to sign a contract for purchase of steel frames  for Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) between Public Works and China National  Construction and Agricultural Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CAMC)  was held at Public Works (Head Office) on Shwedagon

Pagoda Road this afternoon, attended by Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw  Tun. Also present were managing directors and directors-general under the  Ministry of Construction, the chairman and officials of CAMC and guests.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun extended greetings. Chairman of  CAMC Mr Ren Hongbin spoke on the occasion. Then, Managing Director of Public  Works U Nay Soe Naing and Chairman of CAMC Mr Ren Hongbin signed the contract  and exchanged documents.

(9)  President of UMFCCI meets foreign entrepreneurs

YANGON, 19 Aug- President of the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of  Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, General Secretary U Zaw Min Win and  officials met 18member delegation led by Senior Economist Mr Jianguo Jin of  Daqing Petroleum Administrative Bureau of the People's Republic of China at  UMFCCT building on 10 am yesterday. They discussed investment opportunities  and trade promotion between the two countries. Similarly, General Secretary U  Zaw Min Win and Joint-Secretary-2 U Pyone Maung Maung met Trade Promotion  Adviser Mr Govind Venuprasad of Geneva-based International Trade Centre  (ITC).


(10)  Tatmadaw families, well-wishers -donate provisions to Sarthintaiks,  nunnery in Mayangon Township

YANGON, 19 Aug- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and  well-wishers donated rice, edible oil, salt, medicine, gram and cash towards  the funds for g Mile Masoeyein Pariyatti, Maha Thukharama and Kaba Aye  Shwehninsi Sarthintaiks in Mayangon Township at Masoeyein Pariyatti  Sarthintaik this morning.   Staff Officer Daw Than Than Win (in-charge of external news) of Myanma Radio  and Television acted as master of ceremonies. The congregation received the  Five Precepts from Presiding Sayadaw of Maha Thukharama Sarthintaik Bhaddanta  Virocana. The Deputy Ministers, senior military officers and departmental  heads donated provisions to the members of the Sangha. Then, Brig-Gen Maung  Nyo, Captain Soe Thein (Navy) and Lt-Col Tin Win (Air) presented rice donated  by families of Defence Services (Army, Navy, Air) to the Presiding Sayadaw of  Maha Thukharama Sarthintaik.

Similarly, Yangon City Development Committee,  Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, Yangon West District and  Mayangon Township Peace and Development Councils, departments and  well-wishers donated 113 bags o f rice, 45 viss of edible oil, 300 viss of  iodized salt, 30 tubes of tooth paste, 60 bags of gram, 1,015 bottles of  indigenous~ medicines and' robes to the Sayadaw.

Well-wishers presented cash towards the funds of Sarthintaiks to the deputy  ministers. Director of Resettlements-Brig-Gen Aung Thein supplicated on the  purpose of the donations. Masoeyein Kyaungtaik Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw  Bhaddanta Vimala delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.

Likewise, the rice donation ceremony for Shwemyaing Thiri Nunnery of Ward 5  in Mayangon Township was held at the nunnery this morning. Member of the  State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Kalaywa Tawya Sarthintaik Presiding Nayaka  Agga Maha Pandita Dwipitakadhara Dwipitakakovida -Sayadaw Bhaddanta  Jagarabhivamsa administered the Eight Precepts.

The Deputy Ministers, senior military officers and departmental heads  presented provisions to the Sayadaw. Then, Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Captain Soe  Thein (Navy) and Lt-Col Tin Win (Air) presented rice donated by Tatmadaw  families to Presiding Nayaka of the nunnery Daw Eindacari. A total of 46  well wishers presented K 930,000 for Soonpadethabin and K 3,314,500 for  construction of the buildings to the Deputy Ministers. Then, Sayadaw  Bhaddanta Jagarabhivamse delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.  After the ceremony, nuns led by Presiding Nun Daw Eindacari recited religious  verses.


(11)  Police Director-General tours Pyay District

YANGON, 19 Aug- Secretary of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control  Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, directors of  MPF Headquarters and CCDAC Office and Bago Division (Western Branch) Police  Commander Police Col Aung Daing, arrived at Shwepyitha rehabilitation camp  for drug addicts in Pyay District on 17 August afternoon. The MPF  Director-General met officials and attended to their needs. He then conversed  with trainees of the camp.

In the evening? the MPF Director-General. and party proceeded to No 2 Police  Training School in Wethtigan and inspected training administration and  cultivation matters. He also inspected the farm of Pyay District Police Force  and Pyay District Police Commander's Office. Yesterday morning, the MPF  Director-General and party inspected Padaung Township Police Station. He met  police members and families of Pyay District and gave necessary instructions.


(12)  Raw opium seized in Myitnge

YANGON, 19 Aug- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit  and MPF, acting on information, searched a passenger car at the check-point  of Myitnge Bridge, Singaing Township, Mandalay Division, on 6 August and  arrested Khun Than Win, son of U Mya, of Phoni Village in Pinlaung Township  together with 2.1229 kilos of raw opium on board Hi-Ace passenger light truck  (2 Kagyi/1872). Action is being taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs  and Psychotropic Substances Law.   marijuana possessor gets 30 years

Marijuana possessor gets 30 years

YANGON, 19 Aug- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit  and Yangon Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on information, searched Than  Hlaing on Bayintnaung Road in Ward 5 of Mayangon Township on 7 October 1999  and seized 1.388 kilos of marijuana.

Action was taken against Than Hlaing (a) Jim Brown, 32, son of U Maung Sein  of 293, Nila 6th lane, Ward 8, North Okkalapa Township, under Section 15/ 19  (A) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Mayangon Police  Station. The Yangon West District Court handed down 25 years' imprisonment  under Section 19 (A) and five years' imprisonment under Section 15 on him to  serve separately on 31 July 2000.

(13) Voters of Thegon Township Constituency-2 express no confidence in  representative-elect U Thein Tun, demand dissolution of pessimist NLD

YANGON, 19 Aug- Voters from Thegon Township Constituency-2, Bago Division,  submitted petitions expressing no confidence in U Thein Tun who was elected  as Pyithu Hluttaw Representative of National League for Democracy in the 1990  Multiparty Democracy General Election from Thegon Township Constituency-2 and  no support for him, and petitioned for dissolution of pessimist NLD at  rallies on 15 August.

A total of 14,300 people from four wards and 25 village-tracts rallied in the  Township Sports Ground. On behalf of attendance’s, farmer U Myat Soe of  Myitzugon Village expressed no confidence in U Thein Tun of NLD and no  support for him and petitioned for dissolution of NLD. Daw Kyi Than of Ward 1  of Thegon presented petitions signed by the people, to member of Township  Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Judge Daw Myint  Hwa.

Altogether 16,051 people from 24 village-tracts rallied at Wetpok Village  Sports Ground.

On behalf of the people, merchant U Kan Tun of Boyon Ward of Padigon  expressed no confidence in U Thein Tun of NLD and no support for him and  petitioned for dissolution of pessimist NLD. Merchant U Cho Tu of KanthaU  Ward of Padigon presented petitions signed by the people, to member of  Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Township Law  Officer U Min Thein. Then, rallies ended with the chanting of Our Three Main  National Causes.

Out of 40,248 eligible voters in Thegon Township Constituency-2, 14,416 or  35.82 per cent voted for U Thein Tun of NLD at the election. Out of 34,619  eligible voters, 34,488 voters or 99.62 per cent signed petitions expressing  no confidence in him.

There are 71,215 eligible voters in Thegon Township. The number of people who  expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolving it, was  70,848 people or 99.48 per cent.


(14) 9 Myeik Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 19 Aug- Nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy  of Myeik Township, Taninthayi Division. Nine members of Myeik Township NLD,  Taninthayi Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of  resignation to Myeik Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-commission and the party concerned on 30 May 2000 as they no longer  wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
