(1) Secretary-2 inspects construction of Ponnyataung tunnel in PakokkuYANGON, 15 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, the ministers, the deputy ministers and officials left here for Bagan-NyaungU by Tatmadaw flight on 1-3 August.
The Secretary-2 and party went to Yesagyo in Magway Division by helicopter. They were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win and officials.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected development of Yesagyo. Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than and departmental officials met officials of the township, service personnel and members of various organizations at the Township Peace and Development Council Office.
Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin gave instructions on extended cultivation of paddy, oil crops, beans and corn. Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported on measures undertaken for better transport in the region. Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing inspected Township Police Station, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt Township Development Committee Office and Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein Township People’s Hospital. They also met- service personnel and fulfilled the requirements.
Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung inspected application of teaching aids at No 1 Basic Education High School in Yesagyo and met teachers. The Secretary-2 went to the Township Peace and Development Council Office and fulfilled the requirements of township-level officials. He spoke of the need to work with "cetena" for development of the township.
The Secretary-2 and party left Yesagyo for Kyaw Village in Gangaw Township by helicopter. They were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Tactical Operations Commander of North West Command Col Hla Ngwe, officials of Myanma Railways, departmental officials of Gangaw Township. students and local people. The Secretary-2 and party went to the site of construction of Ponnyataung tunnel.
The Secretary-2 said 13.45 miles Yemyetni-Kyaw section is to be built across Ponnya range and the length of the tunnel is 5,610 feet and a total of 3,700 feet has been built on the railroad. The Secretary-2 then fulfilled the requirements.
The Secretary-2 and party inspected construction of the tunnel . The Secretary-2 and party went to Pauk by helicopter. They were welcomed there by Tactical Operations Commander of North-West Command Col Min Swe, Chairman of Pakokku. District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Soe, departmental officials and local people.
The Secretary-2 and party toured Pauk Township. The Secretary-2 and party met officials, service personnel and town elders at Township Peace and Development Council Office.
Next, The Secretary-2 and party left Pauk for Pakokku by helicopter. They were welcomed there by Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung and officials of No 101 LID and Pakokku District and Township.
On 14 August, the Secretary-2 and party attended the ceremony to donate cash for construction of Soonsarkyaung at Thida Aye Pariyatti .Nunnery in Pakokku. The congregation received the Five Precepts from State Ovadacariya Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru (Ashaytaik) Sayadaw Bhasdnta Malalankara.
The Secretary-2 and party went to Myaing Township by helicopter and inspected Myaing Creek Reservoir built in 1992. The secretary-2 then gave instruction s on conservation of trees, extended plating of trees, use of firewood- substitute fuel and others.
(2) Irrigation and regional greening projects main task in beautifying and developing central Myanmar
YANGON, 15 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected Anawrahta Bridge Project on Ayeyawady Bridge and development undertakings in Htilin and Saw townships yesterday.
On arrival at Htilin, the Secretary-2 and party were welcomed by Chairman of Gangaw District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Htay Oo, local authorities service personnel and local people. The Secretary-2 and party inspected Htilin Township in a motorcade. At a meeting with departmental personnel and local elders of Htilin, the Secretary-2 heard a report on township development undertakings and requirements to up grade small-scale dams, condition of roads in the region presented by officials. Brig-Gen Thein Zaw also explained relevant matters.
The Secretary-2 said the government, the Tatmadaw and the people are making harmonious efforts for regional progress; local people and departments should find ways. to develop Htilin Township; better transport is required to develop the township; thus, priority should be given to upgrading of Pakokku-Pauk-Htilin- Gangaw, Seikpyu-Saw-Kyaukhtu-Htilin, and Pakokku-Yesagyo-Gangaw-Haka roads.
In Saw, the Secretary-2 met with departmental personnel, local elders and members of the respective associations.
Officials reported to the Secretary-2 on agriculture, upgrading of Saw-Seikphyu Road and other development tasks. Brig-Gen Thein Zaw briefed the Secretary-2 on location, area, sown acreage and monsoon paddy cultivation of the township, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin on plans to build a dam to irrigate extended paddy, beans and pulses, edible crop and corn cultivation fields and Minister Col Thein Nyunt on arrangements to render assistance for progress of the township. The Secretary-2 and party then inspected Anawrahta Bridge Project on Ayeyawady River which will link Seikphyu and Chauk.
The Secretary-2 looked into the requirements. expressing satisfaction to sec the beautiful township Saw which is the result of the harmonious efforts of the departmental personnel and local people. More efforts are required to gain more progress, he noted, speaking on the need to upgrade the roads leading to Saw.
The steel-framed bridge is supported with reinforced concrete piers. The main body is 4,191 feet long. Installation of steel frames has been completed on nine spans on Chauk bank and 10 spans on Seikphyu bank.
Officials also explained points of Tanyaung Pumped Water Station, Oo-min-koe-bauk Pumped-water Station, power supply to the stations, establishment of plantations in 57 townships of the three dry zone divisions, protection of residual forests, extended utilization of substitute fuel, water availability and greening of the barren-hills.
Located in Salin Township. Tanyaung Pumped water Project will lift water from Ayeyawady River to irrigate 1,500 acres. Oo-minkoe-bauk Pumped-water Station, located in Chauk Township. will irrigation 7,000 acres. On arrival at Yenangyoung the Secretary-2 was welcomed by Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Commander of No 88 LID Brig-Gen Aye Kywa and officials. During inspection of Hsadaing Dam Project near Hsadaing village, Yenangyoung Township the Secretary-2 heard a report on progress of work presented by Brig- Gen Aye Kywa. The Secretary-2 gave suggestions. The main purpose of the project on Hsadaing Creek is to supply clean water and regional greening.

(3) Winthuza Shop opens in Pakokku
YANGON, 15 Aug -Winthuza Shop of the Ministry of Industry-1 was opened in Pakokku on 13 August, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
The ministry is opening Winthuza shops one after another in major towns in the country. The Secretary-2 unveiled the signboard of the shop.
Managing Director of Myanma Foodstuff Industries U Kyaw Myint and Chairman of Pakokku District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Soe formally opened the shop. The Secretary-2 and party were conducted around the shop by Minister for Industry U Aung Thaung and officials.
Managing Director U Kyaw Myint explained that Winthuza shops around the nation are selling goods manufactured by six industries of the ministry at fair prices; the shops are selling the ministry’s products such as garments, textiles, cosmetics, ceramic ware, glassware, stationery and leather goods and products of other ministries, which include, farm machinery and machine tools. Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said the shops are being opened one after another due to the efforts of the Minister for Industry-1 and staff at different levels.
Continuous availability of standard goods at fair prices and customer satisfaction are important, he noted. Local people should also render assistance for the progress of the shops. The shops open daily from 8 am to 5 pm except on Sabbath days and gazetted holidays.
(4) Secretary-3 attends entertainment programme of India Yakshagana Troupe
YANGON, 15 Aug-The Yakshagana troupe of Southern India, currently here to present entertainment programme to mark the 53rd Anniversary Independence Day of India under the cultural exchange programme
between Myanmar and India, performed National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street in Dagon Township at 6 pm today, attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife Daw Khin Cho Oo. Also present were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, directors-general and deputy directors-general under Ministry of Culture, departmental officials, Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran, ambassadors, guests and public. After the ceremony, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint presented a flower basket to the troupe.

(6) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni image crowded with devotees near Mindhamma Hill
YANGON, 15 Aug- Members of the Sangha and devotees paid homage to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image near Mindhamma Hill in Insein Township, Yangon North District, the whole day today.
Devotees, officials and employees continued to make preparations for conveyance of the Image from the foot of the hill onto the throne on the hill and build a retaining wall. Wut associations recited religious verses on the hill from 7 am to 10 pm today. Well-wishers made donations at the fund-raising unit on the hill opened by the Financial Sub-committee. Donations by the public have amounted to K 17,000,873 from 5 August to date.
Raksha Bandham Mahotsar Hindu religious festival held
YANGON, 15 Aug- Thanantana Dhammapalaka (Yangon) held Raksha Bandham Mahotsar Hindu religious festival at Sriyama Krishana temple on Botahtaung Pagoda Road at 5 pm today. Present were Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, Director-General of Department of Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, Vice Chairmen of the Thanantana Dhammapalaka U Kyi Min and EC members. (7) Health education talks on medicines of common use held
YANGON, 15 Aug-A talk on the role of medicines of common use co-sponsored by Myanmar Medical Association (Headquarters) and Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd was held at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road yesterday evening, attended by pharmacologists, entrepreneurs of drug companies and guests.
Chairman Dr Myo Myint of MMA, Chief Executive of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Rector U Myint Thein of Institute of Pharmacy made speeches.
Then, Director of Marketing Mr Nazmul Hassan explained work of the company. Rector U Myint Thein gave an account on the tonic Aristovit-M and Director Mr Rakibul on medicines for health with the use of slides. Then, Managing Director t Min Han of Golden Hawks International Ltd spoke wards of thanks.

(8) Leading Committee for Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competition meets
YANGON, 15 Aug-The Leading Committee for the Eighth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competition held its second coordination meeting at National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Leading Committee member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than made a speech on the occasion. Then, Vice-Chairman Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt spoke on the occasion. Various work committees and sub-committees reported to the meeting their preparations for the competitions. The meeting of leading committee and delegates from states an divisions will be held on 23 Augusts.
(9) Drug traffickers get prison terms
YANGON, 15 Aug-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Kengtung Anti-drug Squad, acting on information, searched the house of Yaloh, 37, of Kunpoke Village in Mongngwan Villagetract and arrested his mother Daw Mi Ae, 67, together with 1.078 kilos of opium at 9 am on 2 May 2000.
The Kengtung Police Force filed Daw Mi Ae and Yaloh under section 15/19 (A)120 (A)/ 21 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law. The Kengtung District Court handed down five years_ imprisonment under Section 19 (A) and four years_ imprisonment under Section 15 on Daw Mi Ae to serve concurrently and fifteen years_ imprisonment under Section 19 (A)/21 and tour years_ imprisonment under Section 15 on Yaloh to serve separately on 16 June 2000.

(10) Voters of Ngaphe, Yenangyoung, Taungdwingyi townships unanimously petition for dissolution of pessimist NLD
YANGON, 15 Aug-The people from Ngaphe, Yenangyoung and Taungdwingyi Townships, Magway Division, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of it at rallies in Ngaphe Township on S July, in Yenangyoung Township on 12 July and in Taungdwingyi Township on 14 July.
A total of 17,910 people from 32 village-tracts rallied in Padan Village Sports Ground in Ngaphe Township. On behalf of local people, U Tin Win of Padan Village expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. Farmer U Hmoke Si of Chaungphyu Village, on be half of local people, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Ngaphe Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Myint Win. Altogether, 9,500 people from seven wards and 13 village-tracts rallied in Thonhsechauk Village Sports Ground in Constituency- 1 region of Yenangyoung Township. On behalf of local people, U Maung Maung Tint of Myeni (South) Ward expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution for it. U Myo Thant of Thonhsechauk Village, on behalf of attendance, presented petitions signed by the people member for Yenmgyoung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Aung Soe.
Likewise, 10,5000 people from seven wards and 15 village-tracts rallied in Nyaunghla Ward Sports Ground in Constituency-2 region of Yenangyoung Township. On behalf of local people, U Mya Hsaing of Myoma (North) Ward expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Aye Lwin of Myoma (South) Ward, on behalf of local people, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Yenanguoung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub commission U Soe Than. Similarly, 15,400 people from 10 wards and 32 village-tracts rallied in Yanpe Sports Ground in Taungdwingyi Township. On behalf of local people merchant U Htwe Maung of Ohndaw Ward-1 expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution for it. Farmer U Bo Tun of Khinte Village, on behalf of attendance’s, presented petitions signed by the people to member of Taungdwingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Kyee Hsaing. Altogether, 5,440 people from 40 village-tracts rallied in Chaungnet Village Sports Ground in Taungdwingyi Township.
On behalf of residents, U Tin Aung of Chaungnet expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. Farmer U Aung Than of Thegyun Village, on behalf of local peoples presented petitions signed by the people to member of Yenangyoung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub- commission U Soe Lwin The ceremonies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes.
There are 21.577 eligible voters in Ngaphe Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, was 21,577 people or 100 per cent.
Similarly, there are 82,936 eligible voters in Yenangyoung Township. The number of people , who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it. is 82, 590 people or 99.58 per cent. Likewise there are 126,746 eligible voters in Taungdwgyi Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, was 125, 262 people or 98.83 per cent.
(11) 30 members resign from Pale Township NLD of own accord
YANGON,15 Aug-Thirty members resigned of their own accord from the National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing Division.
Thirty members of Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on S April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
