(1) Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to ROK

YANGON, 15 Aug-Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Kim Dae Jung, President of the Republic of Korea, on the occasion of the anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Korea which falls 15 August 2000.


(2) Work coordinated to promote development of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township

YANGON, 14 Aug -A work coordination meeting on promoting the development of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township was held at Kanaung Hall of the Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development in Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township this morning, addressed by Chairman of Housing Project Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said that since assumption of duty of State, the government has made efforts to raise the standard of Yangon City and established new towns called satellite towns with the aims to enable Yangon to have characteristics of an international city, to improve the living standard of national people and to fulfil their social requirements.

Measures have been taken to allot plots to government employees to have houses of their own in new towns and to shift dwellers of quarters which are not in hygienic conditions, to new towns. In so doing, a systematic layout plan was drawn, and basic infrastructures such as power supply, roads and bridges were built. In additions, loans were disbursed to government employees and basic construction materials provided for those who shifted to the new towns. Now, new towns possessing necessary characteristics have emerged.

To the east, the west and the north of the city of Yangon, Dagon Myothit, Hlinethaya Myothit and Shwepyitha Myothit have been established. The area of Dagon Myothit has been extend and Dagon Myothit (North), Dagon Myothit (South) and Dagon Myothit (East) Townships have emerged. While the construction work of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township was picking up, the financial crisis hit South-East Asia. Due to the repercussion of the financial crisis, construction work became slow.

The location of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township is very favourable. The township is very close to the downtown area of Yangon. On top of it, Maha Bandoola Bridge has been constructed. Therefore, transport between downtown Yangon and the townships has become easier, and the prospects of the township look brighter and brighter. Head of State Senior General Than Shwe gave the guidance that the departments. are to provide assistance for putting in motion the project of .building Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township into a city of high standard, and that State owned buildings are to be constructed.

In accord with the guidance of the Head of State, the development projects of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township are to be implemented with added momentum. In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged all to actively participate in implementing the development projects of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township. Director-General of the Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw reported. on matters related to the layout of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township, Director of DHSHD ban and Rural . Region Project U Win Myint reported on facts about the urban project designed to bring about the development of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung. Than, Minister for Forestry f U Aung Phone,.  Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister .for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and departmental officials took part in the discussions. After the meeting, the Secretary-l, the Secretary-3 and the Commander, ministers and party inspected the layout of Dagon Myothit Seikkan Township conditions and prospects of development by helicopter and by car.

(3) Magway Division stands out as model in regional greening activities Kyetmauk and Leti Regulating Dam in Myaing Township inaugurated

YANGON, 14 Aug-Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Magway Division, attended the inauguration ceremony of Kyetmauk and Leti Regulating Dam in Myaung Township, Magway Division, at 9.30 am today and delivered 0 an opening address.

Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman o f Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, ministers, deputy ministers, the Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council, heads of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments concerned, division level departmental officials of Magway-Division, Pakokku District and Myaing Township authorities, local people, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, teachers. and students from 13 wards and village-tracts of Myaing Township, bands and dance troupes and; employees of Construction Group-3 of Irrigation Department totalling over 10,000.

At the ceremony, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered an address. Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said Kyetmauk and Leti regulating dam has been built in Myaing Township in dry zone and it is sure that agriculture and the region will develop after completion of the project.

He said the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation will provide facilities such as cultivation techniques for double and mixed cropping and irrigation projects as far as possible. If the farmers utilize assistance of the ministry, national and their own interest will be promoted, he added. Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw said Kyetmauk and Leti regulating dam project is the l9th project in Magway Division and spoke of the need to maintain the dam for posterity and to use water beneficially.

Secretary of Pakokku District Union Solidarity and Development Association U Kyaw Tint expressed thanks. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt T in formally unveiled the stone plaque of the Kyetmauk and Leti regulating dam and Director U Lun Maung formally opened dam. The Secretary-2, officials and local people pose for documentary photo. The Secretary-2 then inspected the dam. The Kyetmauk and Leti regulating dam project including an earth reservoir and a diversion dam and regulating unit was implemented at a cost of K 150 million on Bahone Creek near Kyetmauk Village by Construction-3 of Irrigation Department. The earth embankment is 1,910 feet long and 43 feet high. The capacity of the dam is 1,100 acre feet. The diversion dam is 120 feet long and 14 feet high. The Kyetmauk and Leti regulating dam can supply water to 1,200 acres of lands.


(4) National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 14 Aug-National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the meeting hall of NCCC Office at 2 pm today. Present on the occasion were Chairman of NCCC Maj- Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairman Maj Gen Sein Htwa and commission members. Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin made a speech at the meeting.

National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on matters relating to National Convention. Member of National Convention- Convening Commission took part in the discussions. Afterwards, the meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the Chairman.

(5) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image from original to east-west position

YANGON, 14 Aug - Mindhamma Hill on Mindhamma Road in Insein Township, Yangon North District, was crowded this morning with monks, nuns and Buddhist devotees, paying homage to Lawka Chantha Labha Muni Image. Under the close supervision of Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, engineers and workers of Myanma Railways, Myanma Electric Power Enterprise and Public Works are making preparations to convey the Image from Mngala Natpan (train) up to the throne of Mindhamma Hill. The work to turn the Image through 900 from the original to east west position was carried out successfully yesterday evening.

Well-wishers donated soft drinks and purified water to the pilgrims. Wut associations recited religious verses on Mindhamma Hill from 7 am to 10 pm. Well-wishers made donation the ends of the Image. Today’s donations amounted to K 3,191,782.


(6) Myanmar delegation leaves for Indonesia

YANGON, 14 Aug A Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun left here by air for Indonesia to attend Workshop on Recovery of Economy in ASEAN Nations; and Cooperation on Monetary Matters, cosponsored by ASEAN Secretariat and United Nations Development Programme to be held on 15 August in Jakarta Indonesia.  The delegation was seen off at the Yangon International Airport by departmental officials of the ministry and families of delegates.


(7) Minister inspects cooperatives in Sagaing

YANGON, 14 Aug- Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San arrived at Emporium Cooperative Limited, Ywahtaung Ward, Sagaing and was briefed on the production process of gold, silver and bronze ornaments by Chairman U Kyaw Zaw and officials.

At the showroom of the company, the minister gave instructions to the officials and attended to their needs. The Emporium Cooperative Limited comprising four cooperatives opened shops at the pagodas including Kaunghmudaw Pagoda to let the world know Myanma fine arts and to earn foreign  currency. Afterwards, the minister arrived at Mingun Village and inspected Recreation Centre and Souvenir Shop opened by Painting and Fine Arts Cooperative Ltd, Mingun Village where Vice-Chairman U Chit-Ko Ko and members of the company conducted him around the shop. The minister gave instructions to the officials to decorate the shop to display more goods, not to display artifacts and to expand business to attract the tourists.

(8) Minister inspects Dyeing and Printing Plant, Textile Factory Project In Pakokku

YANGON, 14 Aug- Minister for Industria-1 U Aung Thaung, accompanied by officials, arrived at Pakokku Dyeing and Printing Plant on 13 August. Officials reported on functions of the plant. The minister gave instructions on work. Genera Manager of Myanma Textile Industries U Saw Win reported on arrangements for installation of Heart Setting Center Machine at the plant. The minister inspected warehouses. The minister also inspected some technical innovations of national entrepreneurs in the zone and fulfilled the requirements.


(9) Voters of Thayet District petition for dissolution of pessimist NLD

YANGON, 14 Aug- A total of 37,Z84 people from Thayet, Mindon, Sinpaungwe, Aunglan, Manhole and Kana townships, Thayet District, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of NLD at Thayet Township Sports Ground on 5 July morning.
On behalf of local people; noodle factory owner U San Lwin of Thayet Township expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. U Hal Thaung on behalf of local people of Thayet Township, U Maung Up on behalf of local people of Mindon Township, U Aung Thein on behalf of local people of Sinpaungwe Township, U Khin Maung on behalf of local people of Aunglan Township, U Soe Thein on behalf of local people of Manhole Township and U Maung Maung Ni on be half of local people of Kanma Township presented petitions signed by the people from respective townships, to member of Thayet District Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission U Sein Myint.

Chairman of the mass ,meeting U Tun Kyaw expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of it again and the ceremony ended with the chanting of Our Three Main National Causes.

At present, there are 58,176 eligible voters in Thayet Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, was 56,744 people or 97.54 per cent. There are 40,398 eligible voters in Mindon Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, was 40,390 people or 99.98 per cent There are 61,478 eligible votes in Sinpaungwe Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, was 53,507 people_ or 87.84 per cent. There are 111,897 eligible voters in Aunglan Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed_ the petition for dissolution of it, was 103,296 people or 92.31 per cent. There are 68,940 eligible voters in Minhla Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, was S6,765 people or 82.34 per cent. There are 45,683 eligible voters in Kanma_ Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution of it, was 42,927 people or 93.96 per cent. There are 386,572 eligible voters in Thayet District. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petition for dissolution; of was 353,629 people or 91.48 per cent.

(10) Twelve Patheingyi Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 14 Aug-Twelve members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division. Twelve members of Patheingyi Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Patheingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 23 January 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
