(1) Secretary-l presents ancient objects to Ministry of Culture and inspects preparations for Myanma Necklace Exhibition

YANGON, 13 Aug-Chairman of Central Committee for Preservation of Myanma Cultural Heritage Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt handed over ancient objects to the Ministry of Culture at the ministry this morning.

Present were Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, the deputy ministers, departmental heads, Myanmar historians, donors of antiques and officials.

The Secretary- 1 said those who collected ancient cultural heritage presented their ancient objects to the State through him after realizing the government s preservation of ancient cultural heritage and finding out historical links and evidences.

Ancient objects are rare weapons and personal items of Stone Age and Pyu Period and they also include Buddha images and valuable parabaiks (palm leaves). Ancient I Chinese coins were found as a significant fact and from that new historical links on China-Myanmar relation can be brought about, he said.

Historical evidences on the origin of man of Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age and city-states have been exposed in Myanmar and priceless historical links can also be brought about, he added.

He urged historians to continue to expose historical links thorough research work. The ancient cultural objects will be put on display at the National Museum, he said. Next, the Secretary- 1 handed over the ancient objects to Minister U Win Sein.

Minister U Win Sein presented certificates of honour to Daw Tin Tin Aye of Meza Village in Indaw Township, Sagaing Division and Director of No 2 Basic Education Department U Aye Ko, who accepted on behalf of Meza Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara in Indaw Township. Minister U Win Sein thanked the donors.

The Secretary- 1 and party inspected the ancient objects which include Buddha images, stone age weapons, bronze weapons, coins and small pots of Pyu Period, bronze pots, palm leaves, parabaiks, ancient personal items and cultural heritage.

The Secretary- 1 and party then went to the National Museum on Pyay Road where they were welcomed by Minister U Win Sein, the deputy ministers, departmental heads and officials of Work Committee for holding Myanma Necklace Exhibition.

The Secretary-l inspected the booth of Pyu beads made by Phayagyi Village in Ngatogyi Township and ancient beads worn by Myanmar in different periods since Pyu period. He then gave instructions.

(2)Multimedia teaching centres opened at Sports and Education Combined Training School

YANGON, 13 Aug-Multi- media teaching centres were opened at Sports arid Education Combined Training School and Sports and Physical Education Institute of Sports and Physical Education Department in Kyaik-kasan Grounds this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Principal U Myo Myint Kyaw and Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Win Myint formally opened the centres.

The Secretary-l then unveiled the signboard of the centres. The Secretary-1 and party inspected prayer hall, computer aided instruction room, audio visual language lab, science lab, computer application room, reading corner, domestic room and art studio.

Principal of Sports and Physical Education Institute Director U Kyaw Soe Myint reported on opening of Sports and Education Combined Training School, choice of athletes, medals won by athletes and training for XXI SEA Games and other international competitions.

Principal U Myo Myint Kyaw reported on academic matters and installation of modern teaching equipment. Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Win Myint reported on assistance for turning out outstanding students and, efforts for opening the centre. The Secretary-l, Ministers U Than Aung and Brig- Gen Thura Aye Myint and Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department accepted the donations and presented certificates of honours to them.

Then, the Secretary- 1 said that the successful opening of the multimedia teaching centres at the sports and education combined training school can be attributed to the concerted cooperation of officials of the Ministry of Sports, members of the school board of trustees and the people.

The continuous emergence of outstanding youth athletes of new generations is a sine qua none for the improvement of the national sports standard. So, the sports and education combined training school was opened in 1997 and promising youths from various parts of the nation are selected as trainees with the aim of turning out outstanding athletes and coaches who will bring honour to the nation.

The training school is giving both education and sports training with the aim of producing outstanding athletes in future, and the improvement of the students is very encouraging, and it is obvious that the objectives of the school have been achieved to some extent. Due to its achievement, the school was awarded Sports and Education Trophy in 1999 by the International Olympic Committee through Myanmar Olympic Committee. The Sports and Education Combined Training School, responsible for implementing not only the sports objectives of the nation but also the educational objectives, need to bear in mind the fact that they are assigned the significant and profound tasks by the government and to make all-out efforts for the accomplishment of the objectives of the school.

The teachers are to nurture the trainees to become athletes sons and daughters, to be imbued with a sense of sporting spirit, patriotism and dynamic Union Spirit, to have the habit of abiding sports discipline, to be well-versed in social graces and to bear up-right moral character and to acquire education of international standard.

The trainee athletes are also to pay serious attention to lectures and admonishment of the teachers, to undergo sports training with might and main and to train to become outstanding athletes who acquire education of high standard and bring honour to the nation. In conclusion, the. Secretary-l called on all to provide assistance and encouragement for the school with the aim of turning out stalwart sons and daughters who serve the interest of the nation as well as bringing honour to the nation. He also thanked the well wishers and the members of the school board of trustees for their contributions to the training school.

Afterwards, the Secretary1 and party, together with the members of the school board of trustees, the well-wishers the principal, the teachers and the students, posed for photo.

(3) Secretary 1 inspects construction of Yangon Psychiatric Hospital, Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Kyarnikan)

YANGON, 13 Aug-Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the construction site of Yangon Psychiatric Hospital in Dagon Myothit (East) Township at 2.30 pm today. The Secretary-l and party were welcomed there by deputy ministers and departmental heads.

First, Deputy Minister for Health Professor Dr Kyaw Myint reported to the Secretary-l on matters related to the construction of the hospital, Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing of Asia World Co Ltd also reported on the lay-out plan of buildings of the hospital and progress of construction work. The Secretary-l gave necessary instructions.

Then, the Secretary- 1 and party inspected the construction work of the hospital. On arrival at Ngarnoeyeik Bridge (Kyarnikan) Project, the Secretary- 1 and party heard reports on facts related to the construction of the bridge and progress of construction work presented by Officiating Deputy Director Lt-Col Than Tun of the Directorate of Military Engineers. The Secretary-l gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, the Secretary1 inspected construction of the bridge.

Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Kya-mikan) is located on the road, which links No 2 Highway and No 3 Highway. The upper structure of the bridge is a steel framework and lower structure reinforced concrete type. The bridge is 660 feet in length, has a 28-feet wide motorway with four-foot walkways on both side and can bear 60-ton loads. In the evening, the Secretary-l and party left the construction site of the bridge.


(4) Mindhamma Hill crowded with devotees

YANGO6, 13 Aug-Members of the Sangha, nuns, Buddhist devotees and tourists thronged to Mindhamma Hill at Mindhamma Street, Insein Township, Yangon North District, ,where Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni ,Image will be kept, to pay obeisance to the Image today. Today is not only a public holiday, Sunday, but also eve of the Buddhist Sabbath day, and thus employees, office staff, teachers and students visited the Hill individually or in groups and paid reverence to the Image and made pious deeds. Engineers, blue-collar and white-collar workers of Myanma Railways and Myanma Electric Power Enterprise, supervised by Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, were working hard to convey the Image from Mingalar Natpanyahta (train) onto the Hill. Wut Associations took turns to recite religious verses from 7 am to l0 pm. Well-wishers donated cash and kind with great generosity to the donation centre for the funds of the Image. Today's cash donation totaled K 3,,006,621.


(5) Minister inspects Winthuza Shopping Centre, Pakokku Virginia Cigarette Factory

YANGON, 13 Aug-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by departmental heads and officials, arrived at NyaungU, Mandalay Division, and inspected the building chosen to open Winthuza Shopping Centre and gave instructions on decoration and timely opening of the shop yesterday morning.

In the afternoon, the minister arrived at Production Unit of Virginia Factory in Pakokku, Magway Division and gave necessary instructions. He also inspected storage of Virginia and gave instructions on systematic storage of Virginia.

Then, the minister held discussions on extending of warehouses, fencing the compound and plans on fire prevention. He proceeded to Briquette Factory and inspected the production of briquettes.  In the evening, the minister headed for No 2 Cigarette Factory in Pakokku and inspected the production process of Khabaung and Duya brands at the factory. In the briefing hall, he met with the officials and gave instructions on storage of cigarette, pack aging, spare parts for the factory invented by the staff, research works, installation of air-conditioners and planting shady trees.

(6) Minister inspects Tire and Rubber Factory in Thaton

YANGON, 13 Aug- Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, accompanied by Managing Director U Oo Zun of Myanma Tyre and Rubber Industries and officials, arrived at No 1 Tyre and Rubber Factory in Thaton at 2 pm on 11 August. The minister inspected the factory and gave instructions on efforts to be made for production of quality goods for meeting the target. Yesterday morning, the minister inspected Chilling Unit of Freon Cooling & Pumping Station and gave instructions on repair work to be made step by step. Then, the minister inspected production units of the factory and gave instructions on boosting production, measures for fire prevention and sanitation tasks. Next, the minister inspected men’s hostel and women’s hostel, staff quarters and children’s sports ground and attended to their needs.


(7) Minister inspects co-ops in Madaya, PyinOoLwin

YANGON, 13 Aug- Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, accompanied by officials, inspected the work of carving Buddha images at Yadanamyay Sculpture Production Cooperative in Sakyin Village of Madaya Township yesterday morning. The minister gave instructions on work to officials. In the afternoon, he arrived at the farm of Panmyo Shwewa Agriculture Cooperative in PyinOoLwin. Officials reported to the minister on cultivation of flowery trees and groundnut and ploughing matters.

While in PyinOoLwin, the minister proceeded to Kaung Foodstuff Factory of Kaung Agriculture and General Economic Cooperative Ltd. Officials of the factory reported on matters related to the factory. The minister gave instructions on efforts to be made for production of tin condensed milk, development for production of cooperative sector and arrangements to be systematically made for extension of import-substitute products. Afterwards, the minister and officials inspected production process of the factory.


(8) Monsoon paddy on a total of 1.2 million acres

YANGON, 13 Aug - A ceremony to mark the completion of the monsoon paddy cultivation in Yangon Division for 2000-2001, a transplanting skill competition and a prize distribution ceremony for cultivation and production of crops were held at Kungyangon Agricultural Educational Camp in Taikkyi Township this morning

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than addressed the meeting and gave away prizes. The ceremony to mark the completion of the monsoon paddy cultivation in Yangon Division for 2000-2001 and the transplanting skill competition were held first. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than said.

After the competition, Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu, Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aung Pyi and Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein presented reports on completion of monsoon paddy cultivation work to Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

The heads of department and officials presented prizes to outstanding townships for their excellent performance in cultivation work. Next, the Commander presented a bowl to Kyauktan Township for outstanding performance in all-round agricultural work.

After that, the Commander presented first, second and third prizes to Yangon City Development Committee, Steel Stone Company and Dagon International Company respectively for their outstanding performance in reclaiming and cultivating wetlands. The Commander also gave away prizes to Khayan Township, Taikkyi Township and Hmawby Township which ranked first, second and third respectively at the transplanting skill competition.

Officials of Nawarat Cooperative Ltd, Malar Myaing Enterprise, Myanma Oba Enterprise, Golden Key Co Ltd and Myanma UNI SEED Company presented prizes to outstanding transplanters. After the ceremony, the Commander inspected agricultural machinery, fertilizers and pesticides exhibited by the Ministry of Industry2, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and companies.

(9) Paper reading session on Medical Education held

YANGON, 13 Aug-The Paper reading session on Medical Association, jointly sponsored by Myanmar Medical Education (Central) and Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd, was held at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.

Chairman of MMA Professor Dr Myo Myint gave a speech. Chief Executive Officer Mr Nadim Shafiqullah of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd extended greetings and Professor Dr Ko Ko Hla of IM-2 also gave a speech. Marketing .Commercial Director Mr Nazmul Hassan presented a computer for MMA (Central) to Prof Dr Ko Ko Hla. Prof Dr Myo Min of Yangon ENT hospital presented a paper on Role of Tropical Corticosteriods in the Management of Allergic Rhinitis and pediatrician Dr Aye Aye Myint of Yangon Children s Hospital on Role of Antibiotics in the Management of RTI in Infants. CEO Mr Nadim Shafiqullah spoke words of thanks.


(10) Voters of Gangaw, Htilin, Saw townships of Gangaw District unanimously petition for dissolution of pessimist NLD

YANGON, 12 Aug- A total of 43,500 people from Gangaw, Htilin and Saw Townships, Gangaw District, expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of NLD at Gangaw Township Sports Ground on 30 June morning.

On behalf of local people, farmer U Maung Kyi of Gangaw Township expressed no support for pessimist NLD and petitioned for dissolution of it. Farmer U Shwe Ko of Gangaw Township, on behalf of local people from Gangaw Township, farmer U Hla Maw on behalf of local people of Htilin Township and livestock breeder U Tin Win on behalf of local people of Saw Township presented petitions signed by the people from respective townships, to member of Gangaw District Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission Dr Ko Ko Maung.

Chairman of the mass meeting farmer U Tin Oo expressed no support for pessimist National League for Democracy and petitioned for dissolution of it again and the ceremony ended with the chanting of Our Three Main National Causes.

At present, there are 59,7 11 eligible voters in Gangaw Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, is 59,662 people or 99.92 per cent. There are 30,726 eligible voters in Htilin Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, is 29,137 people or 94.83 per cent. There are 37,798 eligible voters in Saw Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, is 37,449 people or 99.07 per cent.

There are 128,235 eligible voters in Gangaw District. The number of people, who expressed no support for NLD and signed the petitions for dissolution of it, is 126,248 people or 98.45 per cent.

(11) 30 Ngazun Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 13 Aug-Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Mandalay Division. Thirty members of Ngazun Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 9 May 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.


(12) Heroin seized in Muse

YANGON, 13 Aug-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Daw Malu of Talon Village in Muse Township, Shan State (North) and arrested her son Gamsai together with 0.18 kilo of heroin kept in nine soap boxes on 15 July. Daw Marlu absconded. Action was taken against him in accord with Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
