(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to SingaporeYANGON, 9 Aug-On the occasion of the Anniversary of the National Day of the Republic of Singapore which falls on 9 August 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Excellency Mr S.R. Nathan, President of the Republic of Singapore and His Excellency Mr Goh Chok Tong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore.
(2) Plans under way to develop Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township
YANGON, 8 Aug -A meeting was held at the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development this morning to coordinate development of Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township, addressed by Secretary1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present were the ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Yangon Mayor, the deputy ministers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, officials and guests. DHSHD and construction companies owned by Myanmar nationals have been implementing the project to develop Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) Township since 1997.
The pace in implementing the project slowed down due to the financial turmoil in South East-Asia . The township is not far away from downtown Yangon and the opening of Maha Bandoola Bridge on Pazundaung Creek has ensured easier link between the two. Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) will become more important as construction of Thanlyin Bridge-2 linking the township and Thanlyin Township is under way at present; the existing Thanlyin Bridge is linking the Thilawa International Terminal in Thanlyin Township and downtown Yangon. Director - General of DHSHD U Arnt Kyaw reported to their meeting on salient points of their project to develop Dagon Myothit (Saikkan) Township and future tasks, jointed in by other participants. The Secretary-1 attended to their needs, saying the respective department should make collective efforts for the successful implementation of the project.
(3) Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister arrives
YANGON, 8 Aug-At the invitation of Secretary-1 of State Peace Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia Mr Sar Kheng arrived here by air at 7 pm today on a goodwill visit to the Union of Myanmar.
Visiting Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia MF Sar Kheng and members of his delegation were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than. Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of Cambodia Mr Nim Chantara and embassy staff.
Then,visiting Deputy Prime Minister Mr Sar Kheng and members together with Secretary- 1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at Innya Kantha State Guest House.

(4) Secretary-l receives-PRC Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs
YANGON, 8 Aug-Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Wu Donghe of the People’s Republic of China and party at the Guest House of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today. Also present on the occasion were Minister for Foreign Affairs U win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and officials.
(5) Secretary-2 attends 13th meeting of Central Supervisory Committee for Communications Policy
YANGON, 8 Aug-Central Supervisory Committee for Communications Policy held its 13th meeting at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Central Supervisory Committee for Communications Policy Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Also present on the occasion were members of the Central Supervisory Committee Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Chief of Staff (Navy) Rear-Admiral Kyi Min and officials.
At the meeting, Joint Secretary of the Central Supervisory Committee General Staff Officer (Grade-I) Lt-Col Hla Thein Swe of the Commander-in-Chief (Army)_s Office sought the approval of the meeting for the minutes of the 12th meeting of the Central Supervisory Committee. Staff Officer (Grade-1) Lt-Col Ye Lwin of Directorate of Signals of the Ministry of Defence sought the approval of the meeting for communication equipment submitted by departments concerned.
Then, Secretary of the Central Supervisory Committee Director of Signals Brig-Gen Aung Myint reported on matters related to import of communication equipment. Afterwards, member of the Central Supervisory Committee Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin explained communications matters. Other member took part in the discussion.
After giving necessary instructions, Chairman of Central Supervisory Committee Secretary-2 Lt- Gen Tin Oo gave the concluding remarks and the meeting came to a close.
(6) Coordination meeting on tax-free markets held
YANGON, 8 Aug-A coordination meeting on tax-free markets was held at the meeting hall 4 of Yangon City Development Committee this morning, with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. Present also were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister at the Prime Ministers’ Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, deputy ministers, the vice-mayor, the Officer on Special Duty of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, chairmen of District Peace and Development Councils in Yangon Division, heads of department of YCDC, chairman of Township Peace and Development Councils, chairmen of Myanmar Rice Dealers and Merchants Associations, officials, fisheries entrepreneurs and guests.
The Secretary-2 said the meeting was held to review the conditions of commodity prices, number of items and their quality and purchasing of goods by consumers at the four tax-free markets opened by YCDC starting from March 2000. In order to sell kitchen goods of producers in Yangon, the tax-free markets were designated and achievements have been made, he said.
Next, Commander Maj.- Gen Khin Maung Than said Yangon Command is making arrangements to sell chicken, eggs and vegetables at reasonable prices. Vice- Mayor Col Maung Pa reported on sale of Kitchen crops and meat by producers purchasing of fresh meat and vegetables, YCDC_s supervision on the markets and action taken against those who broke discipline.
The secretary-2 then fulfilled the requirements and the meeting came to close said.

(7) Ministers receive Ambassadors and Officials
YANGON, 8 Aug-Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing received Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran, and Ambassador of the Philippines Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at his office at 8.30 am, and at 11 pm today. Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Director-General of General Administration Department U Aung Thein, Police Maj-Gen Soe Win of Myanmar Police Force and Head of Office U Nyan Lin.
Minister meets Ambassador of the Philippines
YANGON, 8 Aug-Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Ambassador of the Philippines to the Union of Myanmar Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at his office on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 2 pm today. Also present at the call were officials of the minister.
Minister meets Japanese visitors
YANGON, 8 Aug-Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein met General Manager of Yasuda Fire& Marine Insurance Co Ltd Mr Yutaka Shimada and party at his office at 4 pm today. Also present was Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung.

(8) Seminar on Control of Hepatitis C Infection opens
YANGON, 8 Aug-A ceremony to open the Seminar on Control of Hepatitis C infection, jointly organized by Ministry of Health and Japan International Cooperation Agency, was held at the meeting hall of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) on Ziwaka Road this morning, with an address by Chairman of the Seminar Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Ministers Dr Mya Oo and Dr Kyaw Myint, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, departmental heads, President of Myanmar Academy of Medical Science Dr Ko Ko, Chairman of Mya9nmar Medical Association Dr Myo Myint, Chairman of Myanmar Dental Surgeons Association Dr Ba Myint, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Dr Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Kyaw Win, officials of the Japanese Embassy and JICA, Professor Dr Shigeru Okada of Okayama University of Japan and experts and guests. First, Minister for Health Maj- Gen Ket Sein delivered an address. He said " I would like to acknowledge my sincere thanks to the Japanese experts and the Japan International Cooperation Agency for their collaborative efforts in organizing this seminar. Last, but not the least, I would like to express my appreciation to Prof. Okada, who has been working with us since the formulation of this project. On this visit, Prof. Okada and his colleagues, together with the researchers from Myanmar and other participants will be formulating hepatitis C control strategy for Myanmar. Although the seminar will be conducted for only two days, I am confident that the participants will continue working throughout the coming years for the success of the project and foster the close friendship between Japanese and Myanmar people. Director-General Dr Paing Soe of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar) and Professor Dr Shigeru Okada presided over the morning-session of the Seminar. The Seminar continues up to 9 August.

Victorious Myanmar Judo team arrives back
YANGON, 8 Aug- The selected Myanmar Judo team led by Secretary of Myanmar Judo Federation U Maung Maung Htwe Oo which achieved victories in the 6th South-East Asia Judo Tournament and the 8th Vietnam International Invitational Judo Tournament held in Ho Chi Minn City of Socialist Republic of Vietnam, from 1 to 7 August, arrived back here by air yesterday evening.
They were welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by Acting Director General Lt-Col Thein Aung of Sports and Physical Education Department and officials, patrons for the Judo event of the Myanmar Women’s Federation, President of Myanmar Judo Federation U Hla Thaung Myint, presidents and secretaries of various sports federations, students of Institute of Sports and Physical Education and Education and Sports Combined Training School, trainees and their relatives.
In the tournaments, Aye Aye Thin won one gold and ;one bronze in the women’s 48-52 kilo, Thinza Soe one silver and one bronze in the women’s under-48 kilo, Naw Ausha Phaw one silver in the women under-57 kilo, Lay Nanda Aung one silver and Khin Lay Oo one bronze in the women’s under-70 kilo, Zaw Lwin one bronze in the men’s under-81 kilo, Yan Naing Soe one bronze in the men’s under-70 kilo and Tun Tin Htoo one bronze in the under-66 kilo, totalling 10 medals.
Cash donated to Myanmar-Women’s Sports Fed
YANGON, 8 Aug A ceremony to donate cash for sports technique of net ball to Myanmar Women’s Sports Federation by well-wishers was held at Padamya Hall of National Indoor Stadium I in Thuwunna at 2 pm today.
Present on the occasion were Head of Leading Patrons of Myanmar Women’s Sports Federation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and members; Chairperson of MWSF Professor Daw May May Yi and executives and well wishers. Chairperson Professor Daw May May Yi made a speech on the occasion. Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the well-wishers. Vice-Chairperson of MWSF Daw Nu Nu Yi explained facts about the sports technique of net ball.
Under-16 to meet Myanmar national B team
YANGON, 8 Aug -The under- 16 Myanmar team which qualified for the Asian youth soccer finals will play a warming up match with Tentatively selected Myanmar national B team at 4 pm on 11 August at Youth Training Centre here.
(10) Red Cross delegation leaves for Seoul
YANGON, 8 Au-A six member delegation led. by Sergeant Nan Zin Nyein Aye of Aungmyaythazan Township Red Cross Society, Mandalay Division yesterday flew to Seoul, Republic of Korea where the 7th RCY International Peace Camp Seoul-2000 sponsored by Korea Red Cross Society will be held up the 15 Aug.
President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Kyaw Win, Secretary Daw Khin Mi Mi Sai, Executive Director Col Aung Than and officials, respective headmistress and teachers, friends and family members saw them off at the airport.

(11) Over 700,000 eligible voters of eight townships in Bago District unanimously petition for dissolving NLD
YANGON, 8 Aug- The voters from eight townships of Bago District, Bago Division, unanimously expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it at eight venues in the district on 10, 12 and 14 July.
A total of 5,200 and 6,420 voters rallied at the gymnasium in Shwekyin Township in the morning and afternoon. Representatives of local people tabled motions calling for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it. Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 36,207 eligible voters in Shwekyin Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 29,077 voters or 80.30 per cent.
A total of 15,000 and 12,500 voters rallied at Phaaungwe Village and Kadok Phayagyi Village in DaikU Township. Representatives of local people tabled motions calling for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it. Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 110,000 eligible voters in DaikU Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 100,100 voters or 91 per cent.
Similarly, 11,512, 7,633 and 7,153 voters rallied at Minywa Village, Kamase Village and Township Sports Ground in Thanatpin Township respectively. Representatives of local people tabled motions causing for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it. Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 72,557 eligible voters in Thanatpin Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 69,188 voters or 95.35 per cent.
Likewise,2,052 and 2,533 voters rallied at Phalay Village and Thakala Village in Kawa Township. Representatives of local people tabled motions calling for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 95,495 eligible voters in Kawa Township. The number of people, who expressed_ no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 87,613 voters or 91.74 per cent.
Altogether 5,620 rallied at Pado Village in Kyauktaga Township. Representatives of local people tabled motions calling for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 119,263 eligible voters in Kyauktaga Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 114,492 voters or 96 per cent.
Similarly, 12,213, 8,100 and 6,300 voters rallied at Township Sports Ground, Phayagyi Sanpya Village and Indagaw Village in Bago Township respectively. Representatives of local people tabled motions calling for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 241,281 eligible voters in Bago Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 222,687 voters or 92.29 per cent.
A total of 12,000 and 11,100 voters rallied at Township Sports Ground and Pyundaza Myoma Ward 3 in Nyaunglebin Township. Representatives of local people tabled motions calling for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 74,130 eligible voters in Nyaunglebin Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded-dissolving it, was 71,964 voters or 97.07 per cent.
Likewise, 3,520 voters rallied at the township hall in Waw Township. Representatives of local people tabled motions calling for no support for pessimist NLD and dissolving it. Other representatives of local people seconded the motions. There are 86,134 eligible voters in Waw Township. The number of people, who expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it, was 74,120 voters or 86 per cent.
At the rallies, representatives of voters presented petitions signed by the people to officials of respective Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commissions. The rallies ended with chanting of the slogan Our Three Main National Causes. In Bago District, a total of 769,241 eligible voters of eight townships unanimously expressed no support for pessimist NLD and demanded dissolving it.
(12) 25 Monyo Township NLD members resign of own accord
YANGON, 8 Aug-Twenty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Monyo Township, Bago Division. Twenty-five members of Monyo Township NLD, Bago Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Monyo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 8 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
