(1) USDA members enjoined to carry out organization work for solidarity of the Union Special Refresher Course No 5 and Management Course No 22 for USDA Executives conclude

YANGON, 4 Aug- Special Refresher Course No 5 and Management Course No 22 for Executives of the Union Solidarity and Development Association concluded at Pyidaungsu Hall of Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby Township this morning with an address by Patron of USDA Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe. The national goal, a peaceful, pleasant, developed and modern nation -- will be realized if all the major forces, which are, the State. the people and the Tatmadaw work in cooperation; USDA members should have the conviction to join-hands with the people in carrying out national development tasks.

The Senior General then cordially conversed with the trainees. He also enjoyed the morning meal together with the trainees. He then had photos taken together with the trainees.

Excerpts from Senior General Than Shwe's address

- All USDA members should not be complacent with the knowledge acquired from the course but to put their knowledge into practical use and break their back to achieve all-round development of the nation.

- Existence of the Union today can be attributed to the strength of the nation.

-If the people become more and more patriotic and their love of the nation becomes more and more dynamic, the Union spirit will flourish all the more. It is incumbent upon all the citizens of the nation to uplift dynamism of patriotic spirit and love of the nation and to strive for the further burgeoning of the Union spirit.

-At the beginning of the 21st century, efforts are to be made to enable the Union of Myanmar to keep pace with the changing trend of the international development.

-For the economic development of the nation, the private sector and the State sector need to be combined.

-Development of human resources has become the prime importance at the start of the 21st century during which technologies are developing with high momentum.

-Special attention should be paid to the preserving and safeguarding of the national identity at a time when the world is in the process of globalization.


(2) Cultivation of oil palm in Taninthayi Division coordinated

YANGON, 4 Aug- A coordination meeting on cultivation of oil palm in Taninthayi Division was held at the meeting hall of the Prime Minister's Office at 4.30 pm today, addressed by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Regional Agricultural Development Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Secretary of the leading committee Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung reported to the meeting on cultivated acres of oil palm in 1999 2000 and acres to be cultivated in 2000-2001 in the division and the coordination work being undertaken by the leading committee, and Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan on assistance provided by the Ministry of Commerce for oil palm cultivation. Then departmental officials and oil palm entrepreneurs explained the cultivation of oil palm in the division.

After fulfilling the requirements of reports, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said arrangements are under way to cultivate 500,000 acres of oil palm in Taninthayi Division, and efforts are being made to provide the strain of oil palm and technology for cultivation of oil palm in the division. The smooth transportation is basic requirement in cultivation of oil palm in the division, and so, the tasks have been assigned to the officials for the progress of motor roads in Taninthayi Division, he said. He urged the officials to make concerted efforts to solve problems in cultivation of oil palm. Them, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by the Secretary-2.


(3) Minister for Information meets Ambassador of the Philippines

YANGON, 4 Aug- Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung met Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at Myanma Radio and Television on Pyay Road at 3 pm today.

Also present at the call were Director-General of MRTV U Khin Maung Htay, Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department U Chit Naing, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, Adviser to the Minister for Information U Kyaw Min and Head of Office Captain Soe Aung.

Minister meets delegations from HK, ROK

YANGON, 4 Aug- Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Managing Director Mr Khoo Chek Ngee and party of Hutchison Telecom International Group of Hong Kong at his office this afternoon.

Senior Manager Mr Park No-Chun and party of LG International Corporation of the Republic of Korea also called on the minister and discussed matters related to communications. Also present at the calls were Managing Director U Maung Maung Tin of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications and officials.


(4) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image arrives at mile post No 4 of Twantay Canal

YANGON, 4 Aug- Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge) was conveyed on a grand scale, leaving Maubin for Twantay this morning.

At 5 am, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, leader of Central Committee for Conveyance of the Image Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and officials presented vegetarian 'soon' to Sayadaws who .recited Maha Pathana Desana on board Pyigyidagun-3.

At 6.30 am, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Tint Swe and officials sprinkled scented water on the Image.

At 7.11 am, when the Image on board the barge left Maubin for Twantay Commander Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, officials and local people paid reverence to the Image.

Then, the barge carrying the Image was conveyed by the fleet led by Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General U Sann Lwin and Tactical Operations Commander Col Htein Lin of Southern Command on board Pyigyidagun-3.

Managing Director U Tun Aung Myint of Inland Water Transport and party supervised the fleet along the route of the Image.

Service personnel of Ministry of Religious Affairs and Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Nun Daw Santavati and Nun Daw Dhammikanani of Thameikdawdaya Myanaung Nunnery recited 11 Parittas. and Dhammacakka Sutta on board Thallawady-4 along the route of the Image. At 10.30 am, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General U Sann Lwin and Tactical Operations Commander Col Htein Lin offered vegetarian 'soon' to members of the Sangha on board Pyigyidagun-3.

On arrival at the mouth of Twantay Canal, the border between Ayeyawady and Yangon Divisions, member of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Head of Yangon Division General Administration Department Commissioner U Thein Swe and Yangon Division Police Commander Police Col Tin Win and officials on board 500 motor boats welcomed. the Image.

Local people on both banks of Twantay Canal paid obeisance to the Image, flanked by various motor boats.

At 11.25 am, the Image arrived at Mingala Mandat Jetty where member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife,  Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, "wut" associations and local people paid homage to it.

At 4.14 pm, the Image arrived to spend a night at the Mingala Mandat Jetty of mile post No 4 of Twantay Canal. Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and officials welcomed to pay obeisance to the Image at the jetty. The deputy minister and party sprinkled scented water on the Image. At the jetty, thousands of people paid homage to the Image.

Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and officials arrived at the Mandat this evening and attended the coordination meeting on arrangements for conveyance of the Image.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and officials.


(5) Minister inspects Yaybawthaung Bridge Project

YANGON, 4 Aug- Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Myint Thein and officials of Public Works, inspected Yaybawthaung Bridge Project in Hmawby Township this morning. On the way to the project, they inspected Myochaung Yaybawthaung Road.

The minister gave instructions on the building of the main bridge at the project. In the evening, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with Deputy Ministers U Tint Swe and Brig-Gen Myint Thein, managing directors and director-general and officials, attended the Seminar on Bridge Design and Construction  ,jointly organized by Public Works under the Ministry of Construction and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Infrastructure Development Institute-Japan (IDI) and Japan Association Steel Bridge Construction (JASBC) at the Head Office of Public Works.

Engineer Mr Soichiro Imai, Chief Engineer Dr Takayuki Nishido and Expert Dr Herochi Sato explained calculation of measurement of the bridge with iron framework, salient points about suspension bridges and bridges build on the roads in Japan. Then, engineers present raised queries. Leader of Japanese engineer group Dr Minoru Fujiwara presented certificates to engineer trainees. Then, Dr Minoru Fujiwara and delegate of JICA Mr Toshimichi Aoki gave speeches. Later, the seminar ended with the remarks by the Deputy Minister.


(6) Minister inspects agriculture and livestock breeding in Mingaladon Township

YANGON, 4 Aug- Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Director-General U Win Maung of Department of Civil Aviation Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Win Pe of Transport Department and officials, arrived at the plantations of TD in the compound of Yangon International Airport, Mingaladon Township, and inspected vegetables, seasonal crops and perennial crops cultivated by TD and Myanma Airways. Officials reported to the minister and party on work done and conducted him round the plantations.

The minister urged the officials to make concerted efforts in agriculture and livestock breeding and try to engage work on commercial scale in accordance with the guidance given by the Head of the State, to sell the farm products to service personnel at a low price and to share responsibilities in doing the tasks.

The minister and party proceeded to plantations of DCA where Director-General U Win Maung reported on land under cultivation and breeding of broilers. Then, the minister and party inspected broiler houses and gave necessary instructions.


(7) Second Session of Joint Trade Commission (JTC) between Union of Myanmar and Kingdom of Thailand held

YANGON, 4 Aug- The Second Session of Joint Trade Commission (JTC) between the Union of Myanmar and the Kingdom of Thailand, sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, was held at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, heads of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Commerce and other ministries, President of Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry U Win Myint, members of the Thai high-ranking commercial delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand, Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarakw officials of Thai Federation of Chambers-of C0mmerce and Industry and Thai banking entrepreneurs. First, Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone delivered an opening address.

In the afternoon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand and Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone gave concluding remarks and the meeting came to a close.

In the evening, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone hosted a dinner at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road in honour of delegates who attended the Second Session of Joint Trade Commission (JTC).


(8) Persons who contribute to activities to mark Myanmar Women's Day honoured

YANGON, 4 Aug_A ceremony to honour those who contributed to the activities to mark the Myanmar Women's Day 2000, organized by Myanmar-National Committee for Women's Affairs, was held at Bogyoke Aung San Hall of Social Welfare Department on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road this afternoon, attended by Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa. Also present on the occasion were members of MNCWA, the vice-chairperson, the secretary and members of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, artistes and guests Chairperson of Organizing Committee for Myanmar Women's 2000 Day Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe gave a speech.

Then, Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Vice-Chairperson Professor Daw May May Yi presented certificates of honour to those who contributed to the activities to mark the Myanmar Women's Day. Then, Director Maung Hnin Moe who covered 'Shwe-pay-loh ma-ya' television drama to mark the Myanmar Women's Day spoke words of thanks.


(9) Entries invited for 2000 Noma Concours for Comic Book Illustrations

YANGON, 4 Aug- Entries are invited for 2000 Noma Concours for Picture Book Illustrations. The competition is held under the sponsorship of Asia Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (Tokyo) with the aim of improving the quality and standard of comic books for the children from the developing nations.

Prizes will be given from the funds set up by Ex-Vice Chairman of ACCU and Honorary Patron of Kodensha Children Literature Publishing Department Mr Shoichi Noma.

Illustrations for the comic books are to be sent not later than 30 December 2000 to Daw Cho Cho Than, Joint Secretary of Entries Scrutiny Committee for 2000 Noma Concours for Comic Book Illustrations, Sarpay Beikman, 529-531, Merchant Street, Yangon, (Phone 28334 and 283611).

Together with the entry, a brief synopsis of the story in English composed of about 300 words, is to be sent. Prize winning entries will be announced in March 2001.

US $ 3,000 will be presented for first prize winner, US $ l,000 for two second prize winners, US $ 300 each for ten special prize winners and medals will be sent to 20 consolation prize winners.


(10) Myanmar wins 8 medals in SEA Invitational Judo Tourney

YANGON, 4 Aug- Myanmar has won eight medals including one gold in the on-going Sixth South-East Asia Invitational judo Tournament held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Aye Aye Thin won one gold in women's 48-52-kilo class and other four players won three silver and one bronze. Myanmar also won two bronze in men's event. The tournament began on 2 August.


(11) Drug traffickers get life imprisonment

YANGON, 4 Aug- A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and local police force, acting on information, searched the house of Thet Way, aged 40, son of U Ohn Maung, of No 365, Meeset Street, Nankhe Ward, Thaton, on 6 April 2000, and arrested him together with two packets of marijuana weighing 326.54 grams hidden underground.

The authorities also nabbed Kyaw Tun (a) Kyaw Myo Tun, aged 25, son of U Hla Myint, of Natkyun Kyongyi Street, Lake-in Ward, Thaton, who was together with Thet Way at the house.

The two culprits were tried under Section 15/19 (A)/20 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Thaton Myoma Police Station. They were sentenced to five years' imprisonment under Section 15 and life imprisonment under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Thaton District Court on 30 June 2000.


(12) Seven members resign from Dabayin Township NLD of own accord

YANGON, 4 Aug- Seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Dabayin Township, Sagaing Division. Seven members of Dabayin Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Dabayin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the part concerned on 23 April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
