(1) Secretary-1 attends opening of new building of BEPS in Kyauktan
 
YANGON, 30 July-A ceremony to open the new building and the multimedia teaching centre of Basic Education Primary  School of Ashebaing Ward, Kyauktan Township was held at the school this
morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar  Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Deputy Minister for  Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung
and Mr Vikrom Aisiri formally opened the new school building.
 
Next, the Secretary-l formally unveiled the plaque. Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party and guests inspected the  computer room, the language lab, the altar room, the painting room, the domestic science
room, the reading room and the  music. room.
 
Then, a ceremony to made the opening of the new school building was held in the school hall. The Secretary-1 accepted  documents related to the three storey new school building constructed at a cost of K.55 million donated by Mr Vikrom  Aisiri. The Secretary-1 also presented a certificates of honour to the donor. Headmaster U Myint Sein explained matters  related to the new; school building and spoke words of thanks.
 
Chairman of School Board of Trustees U Hsan Tint thanked well-wishers who provided assistance for all-round  development of the school. Headmaster U Myint Sein presented gifts to the Secretary- 1, the
commander, the ministries  and the well-wishers. The Secretary-l presented K 500,000 for the trust fund of the school and teaching aids  to. Headmaster U Myint Sein.

The Secretary-l  urged the people, teachers and students to cooperate in maintaining the new school building and improving the standard of the school. In conclusion, the Secretary-l thanked regional authorities,  departmental officials, the donor and families. Then, the Secretary-l signed in the record book of the school. Afterwards,  the Secretary-l and party well-wishers and guests had photos taken. Next, the Secretary- 1 and party went to  Kyaikhmawwun Yayle Pagoda in Kyauktan, where they were welcomed by members of the pagoda board of trustees.

The Secretary-l and party paid homage to Hsutaungpyi Ngasat Buddha Image. The Secretary-1 made donations to the trust  fund of the pagoda. Then, the Secretary-l paid homage to Shin Upagutta. After that, the Secretary- I and party went to  Pilakhat Village, Kyauktan Township, by car. The Secretary-l met with farmers in the region covered  by Modern Model  Farm Special Zone Project in Kyauktan Township and gave instructions on agricultural development tasks. If Modern Model  Farm Special Zone meets with success, similar special zones will be established throughout Kyauktan Township. The  objectives of Modern Model Farm Special Zone are to produce 100 baskets of paddy per acre, to increase cultivation of  multiple crops up to 200%, to build modern model farms and to ensure emergence of model farm families representing the  nation. To achieve these objectives, the government is providing assistance.
 
The Secretary-1 and party went to No 10 Saw Mill in Thanlyin where they were welcomed by Minister for Forestry U Aung  Phone, the managing director of Myanma Timber Enterprise and officials. The
Secretary-l and party inspected sawing of  teak and sawn teak for packaging. Minister U Aung Phone reported on areas and location of the saw mill, its capacity and  production, wood-based industries of
Myanma Timber Enterprise, tasks for 2000-2001 and future tasks, measures  undertaken for raw materials needed in 55 factories and cooperation programmes.
 
Managing Director U Win Aung of Wood Land Co Ltd reported on project to be implemented in Botanical Gardens in  PyinOoLwin. The Secretary-1 then gave instructions and left No 10 Saw Mill in the
afternoon.

(2) Minister U Win Aung attends 33rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting
 
YANGON, 30 July-Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung yesterday arrived back here after attending the 33rd ASEAN  Ministerial Meeting held from 23 to 29 July in Bangkok, Thailand, the informal meeting
of ASEAN Foreign Ministers, the first  meeting of ASEAN+3 Foreign Ministers, the 7th ASEAN Regional Forum and the Post Ministerial Conference and the  meeting of dialogue partner Foreign Ministers.
 
During his stay in Thailand, Minister U Win Aung attended the 33rd.ASEAN Ministerial Meeting from 24 to 25 July, the  informal meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers on 24 July, the meeting of Commission. on South East Asia Nuclear Weapon  Free Zone on 25 July, the meeting of ASEAN+3 Foreign Ministers on 26 July, the 7th ASEAN Regional Forum on 27 July  and the Post Ministerial Conference and the meeting of dialogue partner Foreign Ministers on 28 and 29 July. Minister U  Win Aung delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the 33rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on 24 July. The minister  attended the 7th ASEAN Regional Forum on 27 July and explained the government s programmes and development in the  country in detail. Moreover, he also reported on the government s endeavours and accomplishments on the anti-drug  campaign. The minister attended the meeting of SEAN-Japan
on 28 July and accepted ASEAN-Japan relations  coordinator's duty from Vietnam and explained programmes for promotion of ASEAN-Japan dialogue partner relations.
 
Minister U Win Aung together with dialogue partner Foreign Ministers paid a courtesy call on His    Majesty King of Thailand  on 27 July. He, together with ASEAN Foreign Ministers, also called on Prime Minister of Thailand Mr Chun Leekpai on 24  July. Minister U Win Aung met Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand Mr Surin Pitsuwan on 23 July and discussed  ASEAN affairs and bilateral relations.
 
Minister U Win Aung met Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and India on 28 July and  discussed cooperation in tourism industry and exchanged views. Moreover, the minister met Minister of Foreign Affairs of  Japan Mr Yohei Kono at the informal meeting. Minister U Win Aung met Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia Mr  Alexander Downer on 29 July and discussed mutual
cooperation and further strengthening of bilateral relations.
 
Minister U Win Aung met Deputy Coordinator Mr David E Lockwood of Asia and Pacific Bureau of UNDP on 25 July and he  received Long of UNICEF East Asia and the Pacific Branch on 28 July and explained the government s endeavours for  development of Myanmar. Minister U Win Aung met correspondents of BBC TV, BBC (Myanmar) Programme, Bangkok  Bureau of Kyodo News Agency and Thai TV Global Network and replied to their queries on Myanmar-ASEAN relations,
 Myanmar and dialogue partner relations and Myanmar's anti-drug campaign.



(3) ASEAN Directors-General of Customs leave
 
YANGON, 30 July-Delegates from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and  Vietnam, the vice-president of ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the director-general and delegates of the  Customs of Japan, officials of the ASEAN Secretariat who attended the Eighth Meeting of ASEAN Directors-General of  Customs, hosted by Myanmar for the first time, the Second Informal ASEAN-Japan Customs Consultation and the ASEAN  Private Sector Customs Consultations left here for home today. They were seen off at the airport by Director U Thein Lwin  of Customs Department and officials

(4) Ambassador U Aye presents credentials to Governor-General of New Zealand
 
YANGON, 31 July-U Aye, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to New Zealand,  presented his credentials to His Excellency the Right Honorable Sir Michael Hardie Boys, Governor-General of New  Zealand, on 31 July, 2000, in Wellington.
 


(5) Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air), well-wishers donate provisions, cash to Sarthintaiks, nunneries
 
YANGON, 30 July- Families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donated provisions and cash  towards the funds of Pariyatti Sarthintaiks and Nunneries in Sangyoung and Bahan Townships at the respective venues  this morning.
 
A ceremony to donate provisions and cash towards the funds of Aletawya Sanpya Sarthintaik, Zeyatheikdi Sarthintaik,  Byama Neinmitayon Sarthintaik and Thameikdawdaya, Minguntawya and
Aletawya nunneries in Bahan Township was  held at Aletawya Sanpya Sarthintaik this morning. Presiding Nayaka of the Sarthintaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta  Silacarabhivamsa administered the Eight Precepts.
 
Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein and Deputy Minister for  Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein presented offertories to Sayadaws. Chief of Staff (Air)
Maj-Gen Myint Swe, Commandant of  Camp Commandant s Office of the Ministry of Defence Brig-Gen Hla Aung Thein and Captain Naval Staff Captain Kyaw  Tin Hla presented rice donated by families of
Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw  and presiding nuns of the nunneries. Then, families of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Camp Commandant s Office,
Yangon City Development Committee, Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, departments and well-wishers  donated 246 bags of rice, 60 viss of edible oil, 650 viss of iodized salt, 65 tubes of
tooth paste and 2,180 bottles of  traditional medicines to the Presiding Nayaka Sayadaw and presiding nuns.
 
Afterwards, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Chief of Staff (Air) Maj-Gen Myint Swe accepted K 265,000 donated by  well-wishers Director of People's Militia and Frontier Forces Col Than Maung
supplicated on the purpose of the donations.  Sayadaw Bhaddanta Silacarabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits Similarly, a ceremony to donate  provisions and cash towards the
funds of Wunthamedani, Shwedaung Taikthit, Thiri Waila and Shwehlaing Pariyatti  Sarthintaiks in Sangyoung Township was held at the Prayer Hall of Koedatgyi Pagoda this morning. The congregation  received the Nine Precepts from Shwehlaing Pariyatti Sarthintaik Padana Nayaka Sayadaw Bhaddanta Samvarabodhi.  Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Maj-Gen Myint Swe (Air) and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Win Sein  donated provisions to Sayadaws.
 
Then, Maj-Gen Myint Swe (Air), Brig-Gen Hla Aung Thein and Captain Kyaw Tin Hla (Navy) presented rice donated by  families of Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) to Sayadaws. Well-wishers donated
provisions and cash towards the  funds of Sarthintaiks.
 
Director of Resettlements Col Aung Thein supplicated on the purpose of the donation. Thiri Waila Sarthintaik Sayadaw  Maha Ganthavacaka Pantida Bhaddanta Slissuta delivered a sermon. l hen, the congregation shared merits gained .
 


(6)  Minister inspects railroad construction from Gyon Jetty to Mindhamma Hillock
 
YANGON, 30 July- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, accompanied by Deputy Minister Thura U Thaung Lwin,  inspected preparations for conveyance of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni
Image from Gyogon Jetty, where  Thonlutaukpa Yadana hwephaungdaw will moor, to the throne on Mindhamma Hillock in Insein Township, this evening. At  Gyogon Jetty, the Managing Director of Myanma Railways and officials reported to the minister on tasks being undertaken.  Then, the minister inspected preparatory tasks and construction of the railroad for conveyance of the Image from Gyogon  Jetty to Mindhamma Hillock.

(7) Sagaing emerges champion in USDA CEC member Sports Minister s Trophy ISD Novice Soccer Tournament
 
YANGON, 30 July- Member of Central Executives Committee of Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for  Sports Brig- Gen Thura Aye Myint attended the prize presentation for the USDA CEC member Sports Minister s Trophy  Inter- State Division Novice Soccer Tournament at Monywa Sports Grounds this afternoon.
 
In the final match, Sagaing Division beat Shan State (North) 3-1 . After the match, officials present prizes to the players in  respective places. In the tournament, Sagaing Division was first, Shan State (North) Second and Mandalay Division and  Ayeyawady Division were joint third.



 
(8) Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge) anchors at  Aunglan Port
 
YANGON 30 July-A ceremony to come Lawka Chan tha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board Thonlutaukpa Yadana  Shwephaungdaw (barge) was held on a grand scale in Magway yesterday morning. Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni  Image left Magway for respective townships. Before departure for Aunglan Township, Chairman of Magway Division  Peace, and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, senior military officers and officials presented vegetarian "soon"  to Sayadaws who recited Maha Pathana Desana.
 
When the barge left the jetty of Magway, vocalists presented religious songs with the accompaniment of Myanma  orchestra music troupe and "wut" associations recited religious verses to pay reverence to the Image.
 
After that, the Image on board the barge was conveyed by the fleet led by Chairman of Magway Division Peace and  Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of  the Sasana and Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi on board Pyigyidagun-3.
 
Vegetarian meals were offered to nuns and service personnel of Ministry of Religious Affairs who recited parittas on  board Thallawady-4 along the route. Chairman Brig-Gen Thein Zaw, Director-General U Sann Lwin, Tactical Operations  Commander Col Tun Kyi and officials offered- vegetarian  soon  to Sayadaws who recited Maha Pathana Desana  non-stop on board Pyigyidagun-3. People on both banks
of Ayeyawady River recited Maha Pathana Desana to pay  reverence to the Image. Before arrival at the jetty of Aunglan, the barge was flanked on a grand scale by various boats.
 
At the pandal of Aunglan, thousands of devotees, monks, departmental employees welcomed the Image on board the  Shwephaungdaw (barge) on a grand scale. At 1 pm, the barge moored at the jetty of Aunglan and spent the night at the  Mingala Mandat.

YANGON, 30 July-Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge)  arrived at Pyay this morning.
 
Before departure for Pyay Township, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thin, Chairman of Magway Division  Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Thein Zaw and officials presented
vegetarian "soon" to Sayadaws who  recited Maha Pathana Desarz Then, the Image on board the barge was conveyed by the fleet led by Deputy Minister for  Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the  Sasana and Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi of Central Command on board Pyigyidagun-3.
 
Service personnel of Ministry of Religious Affairs recited parittas on board Thallawady 4 along the route of the Image.  Members of the Sangha who recited non-stop Pathana Desanas on board
Pyigyidagun-3 were offered with vegetarian  meals by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General U Sann Lwin, Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi  and officials. Thousands of people, departments and wut associations paid obeisance to the Image on board the barge  along the route of it in Ayeyawady River. Various boats hoisting religious flags in Ayeyawady River and local people on
both banks of the river paid homage to the Image.
 
At 12 noon, the barge arrived at the jetty of Pyay to spend a night at the Mingala Mandat Thousands of people, members of  the Sangha and departmental personnel welcomed to reverence to the Image on
board the Shwephaungdaw (barge) on a  grand scale.

(10) Illegal drug trafficker gets fifteen years
 
YANGON, 30 July-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit, Katha Anti-drug Squad and  Railways Police Force, searched Mandalay-Myitkyina No 55 Up-train and arrested Sai Aung
Htoo (a) Win Myint, 40, of  Myetpa Ward, Mandalay together with 18 sachets of raw opium weighing 25.472 kilos kept in his rucksack at 11.30 pm on  13-2-2000 He was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment by Katha District Court under Section 19 (A) of Narcotic Drugs
 and Psychotropic Substances Law on 29-6-2000.
 


(11) 22 Pale Township NLD members resign of own accord
 
YANGON, 30 July-Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Sagaing  Division. Twenty-two members of Pale Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned by sending letters  of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 4  April 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
