YANGON, 28 July - Meeting No 1/2000 of Myanmar National Committee for  Women's Affairs of the Ministry of Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement was held  at the International Business Centre is
morning, addressed by Secretary-l of  the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-l said efforts are being made for the development of the  women' s sector with the aim of enabling Myanmar women to take part from their respective roles iii the government's endeavours to develop the nation and  to enhance the dignity of the people.

Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs was formed to ensure the rights which have been enjoyed in the course of history by the mass of Myanmar women and to mobilize them as  united force.

In the light of the fine traditions of women who have worked together with men for national development and de fence in the history of Myanmar, the government has recognized the abilities and important role of Myanmar  women, in striving for national development and formed the national level
committees.

In conclusion, the minister urged all implement the instructions given by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt  at the First Myanmar Women's Conference held from 6 to
10 December in 1998 to lay down plans for the development of Myanmar women; to safeguard against  the danger of politicians in disguise; to enable the force of Myanmar women to work for the
development of the State; to get the mass of honest and  simple Myanmar women to understand the plans for the development of Myanmar women and cooperate in this task; to enable young Myanmar girls to preserve  their own culture and safeguard their lineage; to prevent young women from being persuaded and abused by unscrupulous persons; and to prevent violence  against women by providing assistance through all sectors including economic and social sectors.

Then, Secretary of MNCWA and MNWCWA Director General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing reported on tasks undertaken by MNCWA and future programmes. Then, heads and officials of
various groups under MNWCWA  reported on the work done. Vice-Chairperson of MNCWA Professor Daw May May Yee explained matters related to the Second Myanmar Women's Conference. Then,  a
general round of discussions followed. The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.


(2) Secretary-l calls for emergence of patriotic, capable and modern Myanmar Police Force

YANGON, 28 July-The tenth meeting of Management System Reform Committee of Myanmar Police  Force was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Home Affairs this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Management System Reform Committee of MPF Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. The Secretary-l said that at the tenth meeting of Management System Reform Committee of Myanmar Police Force, the work done  by the committee will be assessed and future programmes laid down which are  to ensure community peace and tranquillity and to maintain law and order, and success has been achieved to some extent.

Afterwards, Vice-Chairman of Management System 0 Reform Committee Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing reported on how MPF is under going  reforms, measures taken to reduce the number of
incidence of crime, prevention of danger of narcotic drugs, rehabilitation, judicial matters and welfare  work for members of MPF.

Secretary of Management System Reform Committee Director-General of MPF Police Maj-Gen Soe Win reported on implementation of decisions made at the ninth meeting.

Then, officials of respective subcommittees reported on the work done.  Next, the Secretary-l said that in the light of discussions and reports presented to the meeting, it is found that success has been achieved to some extent  in carrying out management system reform for MPF.

This can be attributed to the guidance of the Head of State and concerted efforts and supervision of the Minister for Home Affairs, the Deputy  Minister for Home Affairs and officials of MPF. In conclusion, the Secretary-1  called on all to carry out management reforms of MPF with added momentum, to do communal welfare activities such as agriculture and livestock breeding, to regard the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe as working guidelines and to continue to work so
as to achieve the. purpose with  these guidelines in mind.


(3) Eighth Meeting of ASEAN Directors-General of Customs opens

YANGON, 28 July-A ceremony to open the Eighth Meeting of ASEAN Directors-General of Customs to be hosted in Myanmar for the first time,  was held at the Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road, here, at 8.30 am today,  with an address by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw  Lwin, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office  Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Co-operatives U Aung San, Deputy Minister for  National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Deputy Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue  Brig-Gen Than Tun, ambassadors of embassies of ASEAN member nations, the Japanese Ambassador, Directors-General of the customs from Brunei Darussalam,  Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,. Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand  and Vietnam, and delegates, the director-general of the customs of Japan and members, delegates of the ASEAN Secretariat, directors-general and  managing directors of departments and enterprises under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, observers and guests. (4)  Eighth Meeting of ASEAN Directors-General of Customs commences

YANGON, 28 July-The Eighth Meeting of the ASEAN Directors-General of  Customs, hosted by Myanmar for the first time, began at the Traders Hotel this morning. Present were officials of the
ASEAN Secretariat and directors-general of customs and delegates from ASEAN member nations  Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Director-General of the Customs Datuk Haji Ahmad Padzli Bin Mohyiddin of Malaysia presided over the meeting and made a speech. Director-General of  the Customs Department U Tun Chun of Myanmar
was elected as chairman of the Eighth Meeting of the ASEAN Directors-General of Customs. Director-General  U Tun Chun made a speech and approved the agenda of the meeting. The meeting discussed
matters related to the major decisions arising from the Third  ASEAN Informal Summit held in Manila, the Philippines, in November 1999, and  ASEAN Customs Policy Implementation and Work Programme
covering customs post clearance audit, cargo processing, customs valuation, tariff nomenclature, transit, automation, enforcement, temporary admission, strategic planning  and management, mutual assistance, transparency enhancement, training and  human resource development, technical assistance to Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam international customs fora and partnership with the business
community. The first day agenda of the meeting came to an end in the  evening. The meeting will continue tomorrow.


(5)  Minister meets Ambassador of Japan

YANGON, 28 July-Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met Ambassador of Japan Mr Shigeru Tsumori at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Managing Director U Maung Maung  Tin and officials of Myanma Posts and elecommunications
 


(6) Minister meets Ambassador of the Philippines

YANGON 28 July- Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin met Ambassador  of the Republic of the  Philippines Mrs Phoebe A Gomez at his office this afternoon. Also present at the call were Director-General of Religious Affairs Department Dr Myo Myint, Pro-Rector (Admin) of International Theravada Butdhist Missionery University Dr Hla Pe and Head of Office U  Maung Maung Myint.

(7)  Ambassador of India calls on UMFCCI President

YANGON, 28 July-Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran and party called on President of Union of  Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and  Industry U Win Myint at UMFCCI Building on
Merchant Street this morning. They discussed bilateral trade matters. They continue to discuss matters related to the workshop on development of small and medium-size industries in  Myanmar to be jointly
sponsored by Indian Federation of Chambers of Industry and UMFCCI to be held in first week of  October


(8)  Medicines, medical equipment donated to ten Jivitadana hospitals

YANGON, 28 July-A ceremony to hand over medicines and medical equipment to Jivitadana hospitals in Myanmar was held at the Office of the Ministers at  2 pm today. The medicines and medical equipment were donated to the  hospitals by, Maymyo Expatriates Charitable Trust of London through  Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel. Ten hospitals which received medicines and medical equipment were Muslim Free Hospital, Jivitadana Sangha Hospital St  Joseph's Convent Nazareth  Dispensary, Tiger Parahita School for Development of National Races, Mingala  Dispensary, Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, St Agne's Orphanage, St Francis' Convent  and U Hla Tun Censer Relief Clinic.


(9)  Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image conveyed on to Magway from Bagan-NyaungU

YANGON, 28 A ceremony to donate cash towards the funds of Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image was held at Lawkananda Mingala Mandat in Bagan-NyaungU Township this morning. Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council of Central Commander Maj Gen Ye Myint offered vegetarian 'soon'  and provisions to Sayadaws. Also present were Chairman of NyuangU Township  Sangha Nayaka Committee Bagan-
NyaungU Taikthit Kyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Okkansa  and members of the Sangha, district and township authorities, senior military officials, departmental officials, religious associations and well-wishers.

The commander and officials donated provisions to Sayadaws. The commander then presented K 959,755 donated by well-wishers from NyaungU District  level departments and local people to Deputy
Minister for Transport U Pe Than.

Bagan-NyaungU Township Gukyaung Sayadaw member of the Central Working Committee of the Sangha Agga Maha Pandita Jagara delivered a sermon. Then, Sayadaws, the commander, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Brig Gen Thein Zaw and officials sprinkled scented water on the Image. Yesterday evening pilgrims and members of the Sangha flocked to the image to pay reverence to it and visited pagodas in Bagan-NyaungU . At 6.40 am today, a ceremony to convey the Image from Bagan-NyaungU to  Magway was held on a grand scale. It was attended by local people and employees morning over 50,000.

(10)  Illegal copying and distribution of uncensored VCDs exposed

YANGON, 28 July-Authorities exposed and arrested a man who was engaged in illegal copying and distribution of uncensored VCDs on 25 July. Acting on information that U Khin Maung Latt of  VCD TV
Sales Centre, No 159  Anawrahta Street, Yangon was illegally copying and distributing karaoke VCDs that  were released by movie and video producers under the copyright act, the authorities raided JVC TV
Sales Centre, at No 159 Anawrahta Street, Yangon and seized illegally copied uncensored VCDs. Then, they continued to  search the houses at No 163, First Floor, Anawrahta Street and No 24, 67th  Street,
Botahtaung Township and seized 125 uncensored VCD albums, 52 VCD movies, 741 Myanmar karaoke VCDs, 15 X-rated foreign VCDs, 6,469 blank VCDs, a computer used for illegal copying and VCD recorder and accessories from U Khin Maung Latt (a) Peru.

Action will be taken against him who was illegally copying and  distributing uncensored VCDs under existing law for this amounts to infringement of copyright and exploiting composers, singers, actors and
producers. Action  will be taken against those who commit such acts.


(11) 55 remnant armed group members exchange arms for Peace

YANGON, 28 July-The State Peace and Development Council, upholding Our  Three Main National Courses, is striving with might and main for national reconsolidation for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation. Realizing that their destructive acts did not benefit the nation at all  and understanding the genuine goodwill and correct endeavours of the  government and that there regional development were retarded, remaining armed group members have been exchanging arms for, peace individually or in groups  from I to 30 June.

Captain Than Kyaw Aung (a) Hsai Lin and Pi Hsai (a) Pi Kar Hsai, Sgts Tun  Lon (a) Than Sein and Soe Hlaing and Pvt Maw Si (a) Khaing Soe Naing of CNA armed group, with two .22 revolvers, one rifle, 168
rounds of ammunition, four magazines and five grenades, exchanged arms for peace in Western  Command area.

Similarly, Sgt San Beik, Chairman Kiyo Lun, Pvt Ma Ngun The and dependent Maung Pon Kway of CNA Chin armed group m Northwest Command area Pvt Tun  Thein (a) Et Kalein of No 2 Company of
No 12 Battalion of KNU armed group with  one Winchester and three rounds of ammunition and Pvt Tin Aung of No 1  Battalion of ABSDF armed group in Coastal Region Command area, peon Nyi Nyi Zaw (a)
Soe Htwe of KNU armed group in South-East . Command area, Pvt Saw Tun Tun Lin  of No 3 Company of No 2 Brigade and Pvt Saw Kho (a) Saw Zaro Khara of No 2 Brigade Headquarters of KNU armed
group in Southern Command area, Cpl San Kyan, Pvts San Pan and San Tun of SURA armed group, lieutenant San Phit, clerk San Kyin, Pvts San Kham,  Sai Kyaw and Sai Ti of SSNA armed group in North-East Command area, Sgts  Aik Pan and Aik Thein of SURA armed group with one 22, one M-16  16, 70 rounds  of ammunition. and two. magazines, Cpl Win Naing, L/Cpls Sein Aung and Zaw  Min and Pvts Aung Aung, Kyaw Soe and Than Aung of SSA armed group with one. pistol, five M-22s, one M-23, 677 rounds of ammunition, 19 magazines,  three bandoliers, two round magazines and one walkie-talkie in Eastern Command area, intelligence officer Aik Tan, deputy leaders Aik Kham and Aik Kyin  Hon, Cpl Aik Shan, Pvts Naw Kham, Aik Oun, Shaung Kyauk, Aik Hsam, Aik La, Hsi  Win and clerk Hsan Nu of SURA armed group with one M-22, two home-made  shotguns, one single-barrelled
shotguns, one M- 16, one .38 pistol, two grenades and two fuses one magazine, 164 rounds of ammunition, section leader Kya La,  Pvts Kya U, Yaw Na, Kya La, Kya Kyo, Yaw Ea, Kya Phi, Lin Han, Kya Kham, Lin Shawt, Kya Bo, Kya; Kyu, Lok.Aye and. Kya Nu of Lahu armed group with four M-16s, three M-22s, one launcher, seven magazines, 155 rounds of  ammunition, one BA-107 grenade and one mine in Triangle region Command exchanged arms  for peace at the respective military camps.

A total 55 persons who exchanged arms for peace were welcomed by officials  of respective military camps. Officials also attended to the requirements.  More persons of armed groups will exchange arms
for peace soon.

(12)  25 Ngaputaw Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 28 July-Twenty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyawady Division. Twenty-five members of Ngaputaw Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own accord, resigned  by sending letters of resignation to Ngaputaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub-commission and the party concerned on 5 August 1999  as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
