(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Maldives

YANGON, 26 July-On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Independence Day of. the Republic of  Maldives, which falls on 26th July 2000, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and
Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr  Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, President of the Republic of Maldives.



(2) Mandalay welcomes Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image

YANGON, 25 July -A ceremony was held at Gawwaing Jetty in Mandalay this morning to welcome the Lawka  Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image, attended by Secretary- l of the State Peace and
Development Council  Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Sayadaw Bhaddanta Agghiya administered the Five Precepts Sayadaws recited parittas.

The Secretary- l and party presented offertories to Sayadaws. Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint handed over K  10.27 million, donated by the public for the Image, to Director General of Department for
Promotion and  Propagation of the Sasana.

Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotikadhaja Bhaddanta Sasanabhivamsa delivered a  sermon. The congregation shared the merits gained. The Secretary-1, the commander and
party sprinkled  scented water on the Image. Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented bonus to staff of the Ministry of  Transport and the Ministry of Rail Transportation who are taking part with might and
main in conveying the  Image.

At the General Hospital in Mandalay, the Secretary-l and party inspected emergency ward, special care unit,  different sectors of the x-ray unit and the cardiac unit. On arrival at Mandalay International Airport in TadaU  Township, the Secretary-l and party were welcomed by Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint  and officials.

At the briefing hall, the Secretary-l heard reports on greening of the environs of the airport, completion of the  terminal and runways, ground services, staff organization and strength, general services, courses
and  allotment of shops, presented by Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint  Swe and Chairman of Zaykabar Company U Khin Shwe. After giving suggestions, the
Secretary-l inspected  the greening activities and airport services. The Secretary-l and party arrived back here in the afternoon.


(3) Massive crowd turns out to pay obeisance to Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image in Mandalay

YANGON, 25 July Lawka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Image on board Thonlutaukpa Yadana  Shwephaungdaw (barge) yesterday morning left Yadana Shwephaungdaw Jetty in Sakyin Village of
Madaya  Township with ceremonial accompaniment for respective townships along its route heading for Yangon.  The Thonlutaukpa Yadana Shwephaungdaw (barge) was accompanied by Deputy Minister
for Transport U  Pe Than, Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for promotion and Propagation of the Sasana,  Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi of Central Command and officials of
Mandalay Division Peace  and Development Council Office on board Pyigyidagun-3, tugboats Hsinpyaung-l, Hsinhaing-l and  Hsinhaing-3 and Thallawady-4.

Employees of Inland Water Transport offered vegetarian "soon" and soft drinks to Mandalay Maha  Visudhayon Taikthik Dhammasariya Pali Paragu Agga Maha Ganthavacaka Pandita Atulagonyi Kyaung
Sayadaw Bhaddanta Odatasinbhivamsa and members of the Sangha were reciting non-stop Maha Pathana  Desana on board Pyigyidagun-3.

Nun Daw Santavati and Nun Daw Dhammikanani and nuns of Thameikdawdaya Daw Nanacari Myanaung  Munnery and members of wut association of Ministry of Religious Affairs were reciting religious verses on  board Thallawady-4. Along the conveyance route in Ayeyawady River, local people of respective towns and  villages paid obeisance to the Image.

Employees of IWT served vegetarian meals to workers conveying the Image. At 7.30 pm, the  Shwephaungdaw (barge) moored at Gawwein Special Jetty in Mandalay where Chairman of Mandalay  Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint sprinkled scented water on the  Image.

Also present at the ceremony were Secretary of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col  Tin Ohn, Chairman of Mandalay District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Tun, Head of  Mandalay  Division General Administration Department Commissioner U Kyin Pe and officials. Members of the Sangha  and local people also paid obeisance to the Image at the jetty.

Artists presented songs and dances. Similarly, members of wut associations, departmental officials, Union  Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, students and
teachers paid  homage to the Image.

Wut associations of Mandalay and departments participated in religious verses recitation ceremony at the  Image. Monks and pilgrims made donations at Chanayethazan Fund-raising Committee which opened its  units at the various areas. In the evening wut associations recited verses at Gawwein Special Jetty. The  Image was crowded with devotees and local people.



(4) Coordination meeting to boost production of feedstuff and veterinary medicine and extended fowl and  prawn breeding held

YANGON 25 July-A coordination meeting to boost production of feedstuff and veterinary medicine and  extended fowl and prawn breeding was held at Fisheries Department this afternoon, with an address by
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo. General Secretary of Myanmar  Livestock Federation Dr Zaw Win Myat and General Secretary of Myanmar Fisheries Federation U Kyee
Ngwe reported on work done and requirements and the entrepreneurs on measures undertaken on prawn  breeding and feedstuff and equipment production. The Joint Secretary of Yangon City Development  Committee reported on matters including acquiring of land.

Vice-Chairman of Extended Prawn Production Committee Minister Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein reported on  arrangements for raising of poultry farming task and breeding of fish and prawn.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the Secretary-2.

Before the coordination meeting, the Secretary-2 and party inspected documents related to the new castle  disease and use of the vaccine manufactured by Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department,
feedstuff  and materials for poultry farm and feedstuff, materials and equipment for fish and prawn breeding farms  produced by Annawamon Livestock Breeding, Feedstuff and General Production Cooperative Ltd.

After the meeting, the Secretary-2 accompanied by Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung  Maung Thein and officials, inspected Aunghlaingmoe Family Poultry Farm on the ring road in
West Ywama  Ward, Insein. Owners of the farm U Myint Shein and Daw Than Than Myint reported to the Secretary-2 on  livestock breeding matters and use of incubator.

Poultry farms of Aunghlaingmoe family, U Than Choung Family, U Maung Maung Than Family and Attapara  are located in Insein Township and U Kyaw Than Family in Hmawby Township. The farms have 21,000 RIR  pedigree hens. Aunghlaingmoe Family poultry farm distributes RIR chickens to Myitkyina and Dawei.



(5) Secretary-3 and family present teaching aids to basic education schools in Kume

YANGON, 25 July-Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, accompanied  by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung,  Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development  Council Chairman's Office and departmental officials, yesterday left here for Mandalay by Tatmadaw aircraft.  This morning, the Secretary-3- and party went to Thittetkon division weir in Myinttha Township by helicopter.  The Secretary-3 and party were welcomed by senior military officers, officials of Irrigation Department and  local people. The Secretary-3 delivered a speech at the
inauguration of Thittetkon diversion weir.

The Secretary-3 and party, accompanied by senior military officers of Central Command and officials,  inspected flow of water into the left canal of Kinda Dam and cultivation in Phyukan in TadaOo Township.  They  arrived at Basic Education High School in Kume station in Myittha Township. They were welcomed by military  and civilian officials, departmental officials and USDA members. A ceremony to present teaching aids, band  instruments, Ozi and dobat and PA system donated by Secretary-3 Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint and  wife Daw Khin Cho Oo for Kume BEHS and Thabyetaung BEMS was held at Kume BEHS this morning.


(6) 111 dams completed within ten-year period of State Peace and Development Council (Tatmadaw)

YANGON, 25 July -Thittetkon Diversion Dam in Myittha Township, Kyaukse District, Mandalay Division, was  commissioned into service this morning, addressed by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development  Council Lt-Gen Win Myint.

The dam was built by division 7 of Irrigation Department. In conclusion, the Secretary-3 urged the local  authorities, the respective departments and regional farmers and people to collectively maintain the dam; the  local staff to ensure systematic irrigation for development of regional agriculture; and the local people to  strive to gain success in agriculture in uplifting their social-life.

Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said 63 per cent of the nation's working force is in  the agriculture sector to produce surplus food and other produce for the population of nearly 50 million.  Thirty-seven per cent of the GDP comes from agriculture sector and 25 per cent of the nation's exports are  from the sector. The minister then presented bonus to staff of the project through their representatives. He  then unveiled the plaque. Deputy Director of ID U Myo Myint formally opened the dam.

Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone opened the  sand gate. The diversion dam has a 949 square miles of watershed areas. The rock-filled
concrete dam is  400 feet long and 15 feet high. It has three eight-foot by eight-foot sand gates. The main canal is 15 miles  long. The facility built at a cost of K 386 million can irrigate 5,000 acres. The project began in fiscal  19992000. After the ceremony, the Secretary-3 meet with departmental personnel and local authorities.



(7) Deputy Prime Minister meets Norwegian Ambassador

YANGON, 25 July-On behalf of Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than  Shwe, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met Norwegian Ambassador to Myanmar Mr  Lars Albert Wensell who had completed his tour of duties at the Guest House of Ministry of Defence at 3 pm  today. Also present were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of  Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.



(8) Minister meets Japanese Ambassador

YANGON, 25 July-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Shigeru  Tsumori at his office at 4 pm today. Also Present were Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Thein Tun
and Brig-Gen  Kyaw Win, directors general and managing directors of departments and enterprises under the ministry.



(9) Minister receives Japanese Ambassador

YANGON, 25 July-Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha received Japanese  Ambassador to Myanmar Mr Shigeru Tsumori at his office at 11.15 am today. Also present on
the occasion  were officials of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development.



(10) Drug trafficker gets imprisonment

YANGON, 25 July-A combined team including members of local intelligence unit and Tachilek Anti drug  Squad. acting on information, searched the house of Aung Khin, 49, son of U Shaung Te, of No
31, Pein  Kyauk Village, Haung Lek Village-tract, Tachilek Township, on 4 March 2000, and seized 160,000 stimulant  tablets bearing "WY" words, spare parts of stimulant making machine, arms and
ammunition. He was  filed under Section 15/16(b) 20 (A)/22 (b) of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Tachilek  Police Station. Tachilek District Court passed three years imprisonment on
him under Section 15, and 20  years  imprisonment under Section 19 (A) to serve separately on 26 June 2000.



(11) Heroin seized in Nawnghkio

YANGON, 25 July-A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police  Force, acting on information, while waiting at the check-point of Nawnghkio searched a bus with number  plate La/2247 and arrested Do Khant Tun, son of U Khwarl Do Htan of Sawbwayanshae Word, Kalay  together with 0.4709 kilo of heroin kept in mosquito boxes. Action was taken against him in accord with  Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.



(12) Eight Wetlet Township NLD members resign of own accord

YANGON, 25 July-Eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Wetlet Township,  Sagaing Division. Eight members of Wetlet Township NLD, Sagaing Division, of their own accord, resigned  by sending letters of resignation to Wetlet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election  Sub-Commission and the party concerned on I June 2000 as they no longer wished to participate in party  politics of NLD.



(13) Coord meeting for holding Myanmar-Hong Kong Soccer Friendly held

YANGON, 25 July- Coordination meeting for holding, Myanmar-Hong Kong Soccer Friendly was held at the  No I meeting hall of Aung San Stadium this afternoon, attended by General Secretary of Myanmar Olympic  Committee and Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Thaung Htaik, Deputy  Director-General Lt-Col Thein Aung and directors and members of Work Committee for holding the soccer  from friendly departments.

First, Col Thaung Htaik made an opening speech. Then, Deputy Director-General Lt-Col Thein Aung  explained plans for the soccer and a round of sector-wise discussion followed. Then, the meeting came
to  an end. Under 19 Myanmar-Hong Kong Soccer Friendly will be held on 1 and 3 August. Hong Kong team will  arrive here on 30 July.

The matches will begin at 4 pm at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna. Admission fees are K 300 for grand  stand and K100 for ordinary stands.
